Mar 27th 2012 2:45PM Well, I'm sure a lot of people have looked at the situation: (1) lots of people without homes, and (2)lots of buildings sitting vacant, and wondered if there wasn't a way to put them together. It does seem like an obvious combination. Of course, the issues of drug or other illegal activity, health and safety, and ownership are huge. I do hope there can be some reasonable ways to turn the social ills of homelessness and of unused buildings into a win-win situation.

Jun 21st 2011 4:14PM I would be inclined to ask local officials to look into the home life of the kid (and any siblings). A mom this nuts is likely to have a very 'different' style of parenting - emotionally if not actually physically abusive. Crazy moms are out there, we all know. Why don't we notice them so often? Well, she's a PTA mom. What - so that makes her a great parent? Her child/children may well be either quite brainwashed (a cult of two or three) - or too frightened of their mother's wrath to ever say anything. I say check it out officially.

I saw the movie yesterday, and was surprised by how much it asked of the viewer. I think a very good paper - or film - could be written by taking small slices of the footage all the way through, thoroughly enough to not miss even the smallest clue, and track every level change and reference back and forward within levels since the action really moves much too quickly for anyone to adequately notice and integrate the interacting elements. It would be particularly interesting to see if the creators themselves slipped up or if the entire plot really rings true all the way through. I confess, I got quite lost in the number of times the elevator in weightlessness got slammed - was it one time? Several times? Different numbers of times referred back to during other time level action scenes?

And I loved the subconscious defense mechanisms.

About the ending, though - as any girl who played with jacks and a ball as a child knows, once that initial wobble happens, the fall over is very quick to come. My vote is that he did make it back to his family and reality - as we believe we know it. Verdict's out on the entire 'waking up from this life' theory, but we won't know that until we die and wake up.

If we do wake up.

Jul 15th 2010 2:45PM Has this man had his head examined? Seriously. It is possible that he has some kind of tumor or brain disorder. If there is no medical explanation for it he is at the very least a seriously psychologically disturbed, and dangerous man. I don't think he should be allowed to be responsible for looking after a child.

Jul 4th 2010 5:01PM FINALLY!!! A movie reviewer who is not afraid to tell parents that just because they are with their kids at a movie doesn't make it 'O.K.' for the kids. Remember that once an impression is in a child's mind you can't get it out again. And also don't forget that no matter how much a kid begs - - "Please, please I really want to see that movie, So&so went to, I'll be o.k.," etc., etc. bears no relationship to the actual nightmares you will be awakened by night after night. (My ex and I learned that with his single-digit daughter. After a while, no matter how boring, we searched the isles of the video stores for kids films we hadn't already seen, or something by Jane Austen.)

Parents: BE PARENTS! Set limits!!! They won't appreciate it at the time, but secretly they are pleased that you will subject yourself to all their whining and pleading and still say no. You are protecting them. That means more to kids than getting to see all the horror movies in the world.
