Uncle Luke Likely to Become Miami's Mayor (The Boombox)

Mar 18th 2011 8:11AM @mrsh2010: It's not a U-turn when you only try to make yourself more palatable to the public. A real U-turn involves contrition, which is something he has never expressed. He's never apologized for putting out his trash, so yes, people should judge whether or not they really want someone like that for mayor.

Greek Outcry Over Kraft's Athenos Ads: Hummus and Hookers, Oh My! (WalletPop)

Mar 1st 2011 6:08AM What is so offensive about this ad? Some people have nothing else to do but to find something to be "offended" about.

The Athenos brand isn't being linked to prostitutes. It's being linked to a grandmother's approval. And it is true that in general, the dresses of today would have been scandalous generations ago.

Somalia's Al-Shabab bans handshakes between men and women (Gadling)

Feb 14th 2011 10:19PM Sean,

You are using a Protestant viewpoint, (Sola Scriptura), and applying it to Islam, which has no such doctrine. It isn't even an ancient Christian viewpoint, as Protestantism is only about 500 years of a 2000 year-old religion. Even more to the point, only 500 years of a Western Christian viewpoint.

I think traditional minded religious people of the Abrahamic faiths, (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) recognize the origin of such laws as the one in Somalia. The laws center around preventing undue familiarity with the opposite sex, which can lead to immodest behavior and sexual fornication.

In an earlier time, it was a Christian sensibility to closely monitor contact between the opposite sex in order to preserve the virtue of youth.

G. Dep Indicted for Second-Degree Murder (The Boombox)

Dec 22nd 2010 11:15PM The act of repentance is inspiring. G Dep reminds of the Good Thief, the Publican, and the Prodigal Son. Good for him to submit to judgement.

Ike Ditzenberger, Down Syndrome Football Player, Scores TD in HS Game (Fanhouse Backporch)

Oct 2nd 2010 2:51PM I understand the spirit in which this was done, but at the same time, it seems a bit condescending. Just because someone has Down's Syndrome doesn't mean that they are not capable. The Special Olympics are full of young men and women who have real talent, without someone having to "fake it" for them.

What if this guy finds out that it was all a fake? Imagine the disappointment then!

How to Throw a Classy Dinner Party (Lemondrop)

Aug 7th 2009 7:06PM To all the posters who suggested that the author was being racist for using the term "ghetto-ized":

While it is true that phrases like "getting your Martha on", and "ghetto-ized" should make any serious writer cringe, the "ghetto" in this case refers to the idea that the single people would be isolated from the rest of the crowd. This is like a "ghetto" in the Jewish sense, when the Jews were forced to live in a specific area of the Italian states.

Holla If This $5-Footlong Ad is a Racist Dis (Blackvoices Main)

Oct 15th 2008 6:21PM You are reading "racism" into the subway ad. It is not inherently there. There is nothing in the ad that suggests blacks are inferior to whites. There is nothing in the ad to suggest that only blacks speak in that way. In fact, by mass marketing, it is saying that we all should be able to relate to it.

The only joke of the ad is the surprise in having an US President speak in a "cool slang".

Yes, people make fun of that type of speech, and it should be made fun of, because it is a stupid and demeaning way to speak, but again any race of people can speak that way, not just blacks.

Aaron McKie's New Neighborhood All in an Uproar About His Move (Fanhouse NBA Blog)

Jul 2nd 2008 11:06PM Where is the racism? Someone in an exclusive community didn't want someone with a criminal record as a neighbor. That would be the majority of Americans, black or white. Of course raising the "racism" flag makes for a good story, but the article itself doesn't support it.

Italian Americans Everywhere, Johnny Miller Is Sorry for Making Fun of Your Heritage (Fanhouse Golf Blog)

Jun 21st 2008 8:07PM When did Johnny Miller make fun of anyone's heritage? Give me a break! And as Martin humourously pointed out, when did being a pool guy become a bad thing?

Bring back the 70's, when people could laugh at themselves and their ethnic stereotypes! But Johnny Miller didn't even indulge in a stereotype, that is what is so funny.

Pro-Life Pharmacies Ban Contraception (News Bloggers)

Jun 17th 2008 7:58PM Pharmacies have the right to sell what they want to sell. Being a pharmacist don't ipso facto mean dispensing medicine that is considered morally wrong.
