1.5 million T-Mobile G1s already pre-ordered {Engadget}

Oct 12th 2008 1:45PM WinMo 6.1 already does everything the iPhone can't do. :)

But I can't wait to see how Android will encourage more competition from everybody.

Political Streams: Microsoft Live Labs web site tracks political dialog {Download Squad}

Oct 12th 2008 1:27AM Awesome. I checked it out, and it is a pretty interesting aggregator. I really like how it points out the 4 major areas (news, blogs, people, and places) and shows the connection between them.

The design of the site itself, is a great piece of work, especially considering this is Microsoft (MSN sites anyone?). Also, the info. from Freebase is actually useful for a quick understanding, though the graphs could use some more details and the ability to be enlarged.

Overall, it's pretty good. I just wish there was a search box, could use just a tad bit more relevancy in the related items, and the AJAX could be smoother. Political Streams beats the heck out of the MSN Election site MS set-up. I wish more product teams at MS could have the sense, style, and coolness of the Live Labs teams.

Latest spy shots show AT&T Fuze defaced with carrier's logo {Engadget}

Oct 11th 2008 2:47PM Ugh. Excessive carrier branding. That really kinda ruins the experience, don't you think?

They should have kept Touch Pro the original way it was designed, keep the same name, drop the AT&T logo on the back instead of obtrusively on the front, and remove the custom AT&T content. I can't believe HTC let AT&T run amok with the phone. I guess sometimes money matters more than consumers.

Is Microsoft finally close to snatching up RIM? {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 10th 2008 5:18PM Wow. You actually think Microsoft would be that dumb to just drop WinMo on a Blackberry device, and sell it just like that?

You don't need a high IQ, just to see what MS will do. "If" MS buys RIM, it's probably likely they'll mesh together the good stuff between WinMo and the Blackberry OS.

And if you're one of those people who just used WinMo for a few minutes and gave up, or bought a lousy made phone, or just blatantly hate MS, it'd be really difficult to give WinMo a fair assessment, now would it? If you're literate, and have a quality phone in the first place, WinMo is a powerful mobile OS and VERY customizable and versatile to deal with.

WinMo 7 will be even better.

User Account Control to be less annoying in Windows 7 {Download Squad}

Oct 10th 2008 12:30AM I agree. The concept of UAC sounds good, but the way it's implemented is all wrong, and I can see how it might aggravate some users.

I just wish there was a check box that says something like "Don't prompt me about this again". So that I can easily check it, and don't have to deal with it again for doing something as simple and insignificant as deleting shortcuts.

I really hope those changes mentioned in the last paragraph of this post will happen. It would be nice of course if Microsoft could just bundle their OneCare AV to work alongside of UAC so security is even less of an issue, but those dumb anti-trust laws kill that idea.

Yahoo! unveils new, improved, kinda awesome beta web calendar {Download Squad}

Oct 8th 2008 11:50PM That's their beta? Wow, Google and Live Calendar are way ahead of Yahoo!, that it's quite sad how far Y! has fallen. I wonder how long it will take to add those missing features...

Microsoft may extend Windows XP "downgrade" deadline by six months {Engadget}

Oct 5th 2008 2:34AM You really think Slashdot would ever be unbiased or write something nicely in favor of MS? If you read that junk, it's not hard to believe you wouldn't upgrade to Vista period.

Just because large companies or organizations doesn't upgrade their computers, doesn't necessarily have any relation to individual people. I'd guess the State of Maine, among many other businesses, want to be cost effective as possible, and upgrading all their computers would be very expensive. A lot of software still only works on XP, and companies don't always switch to the next operating system immediately. I know a good many Mac owners who haven't upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, because they're content with what they have, and don't see much benefit over the upgrade. Slashdot is highly unreliable for getting objective articles.

It's ignorance like this, that fuels the hate for almost all things Microsoft.

Microsoft may extend Windows XP "downgrade" deadline by six months {Engadget}

Oct 5th 2008 12:21AM "The eye candy and security weren't enough personally to warrent an upgrade :) "

If the only new features or improvements you recognized were eye candy (aero) and security (UAC), then I'd say you're pretty ignorant. I can understand why people might not feel compelled to upgrade to Windows Vista (including myself), but saying that Windows Vista is only just a bunch of eye candy and some simple security added to XP is really dumb. You'd think having it for one month, you could have found some other things that Vista has trumped over XP.

Microsoft kills Deepfish mobile browser project {Download Squad}

Oct 3rd 2008 6:40AM Yep, Deepfish has been scrapped for at least a few months already. The zooming functionality for PIE in WinMo 6.1 seems to make up for it though, which I guess came from Deepfish.

I'm annoyed that Microsoft is basing the next IE for mobile on IE6. I'm sure if they took their time and worked real hard on it, they could bring it up to snuff to IE8. More features, better site rendering are crucial for a mobile browser. I don't think IE6 cut the butter on that, especially of a mobile version.

CBS launches live, social, chatty video player {Download Squad}

Oct 3rd 2008 6:30AM Why don't they just buddy up with Hulu? It'd be nicer to catch a ton of TV and movie content all in one place, than separate places. Makes getting rid of a cable subscription easier.
