Is Videogame Addiction a Psychiatric Disorder? (Switched)

Jun 27th 2007 5:31PM Yes, it is a mental illness. I used to play Guild Wars with my boyfriend all the time, but I grew tired of it after about 10 or so months, but my boyfriend continues to play. And it's not normal playing like most people (1-2 hrs a day), it turns into 10-12 hr sessions. He's a smart guy, too, with an athletic build and great charm, but it has damaged his social life. Thankfully he'll get off of it if I yell at him enough, but as soon as he gets the chance, he's back on it. It is a true addiction. I don't think he needs to visit a psychiatrist, but a trip to the therapist could only help.

Hideous new trend: Open toed booties (Stylelist)

Jun 25th 2007 11:02PM I'm perfectly content to let these celebrities walk around looking like fools. How embarrassing. They look more like something a hooker would wear...they're just missing the fishnet stockings.

Playing Dirty: Women on the Wii (Joystiq)

Nov 21st 2006 12:24AM I am a female gamer. And no, I don't play the "girly" games (aka CHILDREN'S GAMES). I think girls/women are starting to become more common in gaming communities, albeit not common enough. I run across other women in online games, and it is very refreshing. Marketing to women as "secondary gamers" doesn't really bother me, b/c if I like the game/console, I'm going to buy it no matter who they market it to...although I will get mad at the commercial :) And to tell you the truth, a woman (or even a man) who has never played a video game in their life, will less likely go out and buy a console to try it out. The noob players are going to be secondary gamers no matter their sex or age...women will play what they want to play and do what they want to do. Marketing in any degree won't change that. I just wish companies would stop making it difficult for actual women gamers to be taken seriously in a game because they are portrayed as secondary gamers. That's all.
