F-Word Town's Name Gets Censored By Internet Filter (Switched)

Aug 2nd 2008 10:30PM Whakatane is NOT a "dirty name" and has nothing at all to do with the F-word. It commemorates an incident around 1350 A.D, in which a high-ranking Maori (native) woman took it upon herself to paddle a canoe (which women did not do) that started to drift after the men went ashore. She said, "Ka Whakatāne au i ahau" ('I will make myself like a man'), and with the help of the other women saved the canoe.

Engagement ring allegedly stolen by LAX security (Gadling)

Jan 11th 2008 7:43AM I was not surprised when items I accidentally put in checked baggage were stolen by foreign baggage handlers (CD player in Chile, cell phone in South Africa). However, I learned not to put anything valuable in checked baggage in USA, either, when my wonderful little projector ($2000) was stolen by TSA in San Francisco or LA in 2004. So far I have not had anything stolen from carryon (I fly more than 100,000 miles a year, guess I've been lucky), but after hearing about the ring theft I will be more watchful when going through security.

'I Won't Let My Child Believe In Santa' (News Bloggers)

Dec 24th 2007 1:30PM My mother was taught to believe in Santa as a real live being, and was devastated when she found out that he is not. She felt her parents had lied to her. So she told me the truth about Santa from the beginning, but we had lots of fun pretending! On Christmas Eve we'd put out milk and cookies for Santa, and she'd say, "I think I hear reindeer on the roof!" In the morning there would be presents from friends and relatives, and some from 'Santa'. I think I had at least as much fun as kids who believed in Santa as an actual person... maybe more, because we were able to continue playing the game years after other kids stopped because they no longer 'believed'.

Hierarchy of leftover Halloween candy (Slashfood)

Nov 3rd 2006 11:20AM On Halloween I read an article that suggested giving juice boxes to trick-or-treaters so I did. The response was 100% positive from kids and parents! I offered top-tier chocolates too and most kids took both but some even left the candy and just took the juice. Though I'd pass along the idea.
