Dad calls from Iraq, son gets suspended {ParentDish}

Apr 18th 2008 10:33AM When my husband was deployed, I told our oldest daughter to keep her cell phone on her just in case her father called to talk to her. It was on vibrate so it wouldn't disturb the class. I also told her that if he called and a member of the school staff told her to hang up, that she had my permission to keep talking to her father and to just walk off campus if need be. Luckily it never came to that but I was making sure that no one was going to stop her from taking his call if he made one.

Airline to charge $35 for customer service {Gadling}

Apr 6th 2008 4:53PM I personally do drive because for my family, we actually save when travelling by car instead of flying. The last time I flew was for my father's funeral and that was just a little over five years ago.
I have three children so when we do travel, we pack a basket of snacks for the road, a cooler full of drinks and we only stay at hotels that offer a continental breakfast to save on having to stop elsewhere just for breakfast.
This way of travelling may not be for everyone but we've been fortunate to be able to travel this way cross country. We get to see some of the tourist spots plus other more out of the way yet still interesting parts of the country. I just won't fly again unless it's another emergency.

Internet, Video Games Blamed for Drop In Camping {Switched.com}

Mar 18th 2008 12:00PM My family loves to go camping (we try to find a new campground or two to visit each year) and to our state's parks but we don't go as much anymore. It has nothing at all to do with surfing the internet or playing video games (which we do) but rather the rise in the cost of gasoline. Our van (the family vehicle) has a 20 gallon tank and costs around $70 just to fill it up.
Personally, I'd rather be outside exploring a park, going to the beach or taking walks than cooped up indoors on the internet or playing video games all the time. So, during Spring Break, I try to have the money saved up to pay for the gas and I take the children on one day road-trips to explore and have fun, such as going up into the mountains to play in the snow.

Starbucks nationwide to close for emergency re-training Feb. 26 {BloggingStocks}

Feb 14th 2008 12:24PM Karen,

You aparrently need to check your facts before making such assumptions. Just check out snopes.com to verify that the rumors being spread about Starbucks not supporting the troops are false. Check your facts first before saying something that you'll regret later.

Why do airlines board in such a strange order? {Gadling}

Nov 18th 2007 2:17PM My family and I used to take advantage of the pre-boarding offered to families with small children. But after just a short while, we started waiting till the end to board. Why? Because with little kids, it can take time to secure their carseats into the airline's seats, get them settled in and then seat ourselves. That was taking too much time and I didn't want to hold up others.
That was around 12 years ago. We don't fly anymore (too expensive) unless it's an emergency (death in the family). I'd rather spend the money on gas and hotel rooms and drive across the states, seeing the country than spend a couple of thousand dollars to fly the family when seats might not be guaranteed due to overbooking, flight delays and I've heard that some airlines now do not even have reserved seating but it's rather more a first come first seated routine.
As for how the airlines are boarding the planes now, if I have to fly again in the future, I'll just wait till everyone else has boarded and then I'll board the plane. Unless I get seats in the rear of the plane (where I prefer to sit) and they start boarding from the back of the plane to the front.

Cookbooks have the potential to be a huge health risk {That's Fit}

Oct 31st 2007 4:43PM I love my cookbooks though I rarely use them. I have a small collection of cookbooks with different types of foods and recipe ideas listed in them. A few of them are specifically for my children (healthy snacks & desserts are just two different ones) while the others I look through at various times throughout the year. I don't always use them or any of them but they are there just in case I need them or want to try something different.

Five potentially cancer-causing foods to avoid {That's Fit}

Oct 24th 2007 3:22PM Ha! I'll continue fixing and serving meat and dairy products to my family along with all the fruits and veggies they already receive. "vegan" may be for some but definitely not for me and don't even try scaring me into that lifestyle because I'll just laugh and ignore you.

As has been stated before, we're all going to die some day...might as well enjoy ourselves now. My family is healthy and my children are doing just fine. Someone will always find something wrong with everything we eat, drink or do that is "dangerous" to our health. I've almost given up listening to those stories and reports.

Do Not Call list closing -- act now to avoid telemarketers {BloggingStocks}

Sep 10th 2007 1:19PM Do-Not-Call means just that - do not call. All of our phone numbers (landline and cell) are registered. Pity the poor fool who does call (automated or not) and has me answer because I'm not nice when my peace at home is disturbed. I've started asking for their own personal home phone number so that I can call them back at my convenience and that puts a quick end to the phone call as they are so dumbfounded and unsure of what to do when asked for their personal information they hang up. I can't stand telemarketers and never will.

Guilty Displeasures {AOL Food Blog}

Sep 5th 2007 8:03PM Those green olives with the pits in them. My folks used to drop me off at my aunt's house when they would do antique shows and my aunt would always serve meatloaf with those olives plus iced tea. Took me a very long time before I could drink iced tea and now I make meatloaf my own way (very sweet that my family loves) but I will never eat those green olives. If I can't stand something, I won't cook it or serve it in my house. I also can't stand onions but for some reason, I love onion rings and will cook with dehydrated onions.
