Heat Is on LeBron, No Matter What Choice He Makes (Fanhouse - Jay Mariotti)
Jul 8th 2010 2:09PM In the end, despite the stage-managed public relations campaign, it is basically a matter of which wealthy team will make this rich, pampered athlete even richer, with ticket prices to rise accordingly. As someone who is not rich, why should I care? True, I have long known that professional sports, like almost everything else in this society, are really about money. It's just that avarice and hubris appear to have bloated to ever more obscene extremes, perhaps a reflection of the "greed over need" Wall Street mentality that seems to have an ever increasing stranglehold on the culture.
Christmas vs. Xmas: What's the Difference? (Holidash News)
Dec 8th 2009 3:08PM Got to hand it to the paranoid whackjobs on the far right in their never-ending search for new enemies threatening their "America." Not the real America (or the promise of it), but the mythical one they imagine it was and should be "again," if they had their way: angry, spiteful, hateful, vindictive -- a reflection of their distorted image of reality and the blinding rage that prevents them from seeing what is real and engaging in the difficult task of actually doing something about it to truly make this a more just and equitable society, as opposed to seeing what they want to see and taking the easy way by blaming a scapegoat or the straw man of their own fevered invention.
AIG execs threaten to quit if pay is cut (Daily Finance)
Dec 7th 2009 9:54PM The arrogance and ingratitude of executives who brought this company to ruin only to be bailed out by the taxpayers! Yet, they act as if they are indispensable to the company and hence entitled to compensation unrelated to their job performance. No one is indispensable, least of all incompetant executives who would have been out of work long ago if not for fear of the catastrophic ramifications that an AIG collapse, on top of the one by Bears Stearns, might have had on the economy.
FOX News Doctors NY Times Photos (Politics Daily)
Jul 3rd 2008 1:27PM This conduct by the Murdoch propaganda channel shouldn't surprise anyone. Nor, unfortunately, is it likely to dissuade any current watchers of that channel. Such individuals who are in agreement with what Murdoch is all about are not likely to be shamed into facing reality by anything a rational person has to say. They would much prefer to remain in their fantasy land where liberals are conveniently to blame for all our ills while the so-called conservatives, promoted by whatever means by the likes of Fox "News," bring this country ever further from its noble democratic ideals.
Torre Is the Candyman; Girardi Bans Sweets (Fanhouse MLB Blog)
Apr 26th 2008 3:54PM Hank Steinbrenner, taking after his tempermental dad, seems to blame Joe Torre for the Yankees' apparent lack of success in recent years. I say "apparent" as Torre got the team to the post season in each of his twelve years as manager. That they haven't won the World Series since 2000 is not because of ice cream and candy but because they no longer have the pitching they had 8 or 10 years ago. Torre was also blamed for the rash of injuries they had at the beginning of the '07 season by allegedly not having the team in shape. Supposedly, Joe Girardi whipped the players into shape during spring training this year. The result: a rash of injuries this month to some of their veteran players and another slow start. Can't blame that on Joe Torre. And treating the players like children by taking away ice cream and candy is not the answer and is in itself a childish and simplistic approach, as if that will solve the lack of quality and consistent pitching that has plagued the team for five years now. As for the alleged weight problem, take relief pticher Brian Bruney, for example, who came into camp much slimmer than he did last year and got off to a good start this season coming out of the bullpen...until he tore a ligament in his foot requiring surgery and causing him to miss the rest of the season. Go figure. As a lifelong Yankee fan, I'm just tired of the Steinbrenners always looking to blame anyone but themselves for their failures. (Hmm, sounds a lot like someone in the White House!)
Cosmo Names Apple Stores Best Places to Meet Single Men (Switched)
Mar 3rd 2008 6:15PM What's wrong with a "skank/whore/slut" in "Gucci stilettos," as someone else here wrote disapprovingly? Frankly, I wish I could meet one!
Ann Coulter Says Jews Need 'Perfecting' (News Bloggers)
Oct 12th 2007 1:34AM In the same way that Osama bin Laden is an Islamist, Ann Coulter is a Christianist: demagogically using religion to advance a reactionary agenda. Now, some observers have suggested that her public persona is just an act, with her more shrewd supporters claiming that we critics don't "get it." But even if she is privately having a good laugh at the expense of those who swallow whole every diatribe she dishes out, the fact is, most of her supporters appear to agree with what she expresses. Moreover, by going so far out on the right, she makes an extreme rightist such as George W. Bush APPEAR to some as less extreme (and hence more acceptable) by comparison. And indeed, one wonders if that isn't her real purpose.
Passenger too sexy for Southwest Airlines (LUV): Miniskirt gets waitress tossed (BloggingStocks)
Sep 10th 2007 8:36PM How can this country be expected to really fight against terrorists who espouse religious and cultural intolerance when companies such as this appear to in effect share the same medieval puritanical values?
Would you rather make $200K in NY, or $100K in Cleveland? (BloggingStocks)
Sep 19th 2006 4:20PM As a native New Yorker, I didn't expect the goodwill generated toward the city by much of the country after 9/11 to last, and sure enough, if some of the remarks posted here are any indication, things have reverted back to form, with much ignorance on display of the way the AVERAGE New Yorker -- not the rich and super-rich part-time NYers -- really live, where the quantity of money one makes (which is not necessarily the same as what one really needs to live on) must be balanced with the quality of culture, notwithstanding the unique challenges involved in living anywhere. As with any kind of relationship, in a relationship with a place (especially one as dynamic as New York City), one often takes out what one puts in. If you are prejudiced to allow yourself to be overwhelmed by or hostile to a city and its perceived way of life, then you will find what you are looking for. And contrary to what some say, the winters here in recent years have not been as frigid (and often not as snowy) as you might have been led to believe. It is the summers which are long, hot and humid, though evidently not as oppressive as those in the much-vaunted "Sun Belt."
