Student's iPod Blows Up in Class (Switched)
Mar 3rd 2010 8:50AM I am a substitute teacher in a school district that allows the use of ipods in class. While I TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY disagree with this policy (it is distracting to teachers, other students, and the general population), I believe I can shed some light as to why they are increasingly becoming common place in schools:
There have been studies that indicate that lower-level (foundations and special education) students perform more proficiently when external factors are drowned out by music. They can not hear distractions around them, conversations, noise in the hallways, radiators, etc. etc. Because of the world we live in, school administrators have decided that because a certain subset of students benefit from the use of ipods in class, then all students must be permitted to use them (fair is fair after all).
To illustrate my point:
As I am typing this response, I am sitting in an Advanced Placement English classroom with 22 senior English students working silently on an independent assignment; of the 22, there is only ONE who is using an ipod. The rest are working silently, and without music. This indicates (at least to me) that more advanced students are capable of getting through the day without these distractive devices. Be aware...if this where a common level class, there would be 15-20 students using ipods. BIG difference, huh?
BOTTOM LINE: IPODS SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED IN GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSROOMS!
Facebook Encourages Users to Lie as a New Privacy Measure (Switched)
Dec 17th 2009 12:28PM This is just RIDICULOUS. There should be TWO--AND ONLY TWO privacy options: public, or private (for the ENTIRE account, not each individual element of the profile). If you opt to privatize your account, you should be able to specify whether you want it visible to friends or not....AND THAT'S IT. PERIOD. The over-complication of this is what's making it dangerous for users.
Don't you dare: French parents criticize Renault for naming new electric car ZoƩ (Autoblog Green)
Dec 8th 2009 11:53AM How dare this car manufacturer use this name! (Please note the saracasm...) My dog's name is Zoe! (Oops, I hope I didn't just offend any overly zealous parents who think that "Zoe" is too good to be a dog's name). The name Zoe IS A DOG NAME. If these parents are so sensitive, then don't name your children after dogs.

Oct 21st 2009 4:53PM I'm from Radford, VA...about 15 minutes away from VA Tech, and 2 1/2 hours away from Charlottesville...can I please just say one thing:
WTF is going on with VA Tech students?! I don't know if things like these are happening at every university, and VA Tech is just getting the media coverage, or if VA Tech is just getting out of control. It's also interesting that VA Tech students are always the targets/victims of things like these, even when not on or around campus. It's just weird. HASN'T THIS AREA SUFFERED ENOUGH LOSS???
P.S. Radford University had a shooter on its campus is April of this year too, so it may not be just VA Tech, but it's odd that other victimized students around the country aren't getting the same attention as VA Tech students.

Oct 4th 2009 6:13PM I'm replying to Bill....
Seriously, do you think that you need a geometry teacher to do that math?? If given the correct numbers, I could do it in my head...and my degree is in Political Science. PLEASE give the people the credit that we deserve...I'm sorry you didn't go to college; if you did though, GET YOUR MONEY BACK! DEVRY INSTITUTE ALUMNUS! ha.
R. Kelly Reveals He Suffers From Illiteracy (The Boombox)
Oct 3rd 2009 7:06PM So now we all know that he and his girlfriend are reading at about a 1st or 2nd grade reading level. Of course, she IS in 1st or 2nd grade.
Maybe she can work with him and introduce him to chapter books next year.

Oct 2nd 2009 6:13PM Who the hell cares?! Aside from the fact that he's married..(I haven't heard anything about him cheating on his wife, so I assume this happened before he was married 7 months ago...), they are two consenting adults, and adults often engage in relationships of this nature at work.
He's being EXTORTED for all of this...HE is the victim, not this woman (who was consenting). I don't understand why this is anyone's business EXCEPT his, and this woman's!
Career Changers Choose Teaching (Careers Articles - Online Degrees)
Sep 26th 2009 7:10PM Well, I am a first year teacher in RI making approximately $30,000. My mother however, who not only works in the same districty, but also int he same school, has been teaching for 10 years, and is making $70,000 (step 6 or 7 pay, I believe...)
The teachers with the longest tenure are making up to $90,000, especially if they have advanced degrees. If you are willing to commit the rest of your life to teaching, eventually, it will pay off (no pun intended...)!
Also, it IS very rewarding...the best thing to hear is a student who thanks you for your hard work because they are going to college, or because you've influenced their perspective on an issue; and this happens often.

I'd just like to point out that you probably shouldn't criticize someone else's inteligence when you say "are," and mean to say "our."
LOL.
