Teen Drunk Driving Program Shows Kids Harsh Reality (ParentDish)

Apr 6th 2011 2:23PM The danger of Texting while driving!

The danger of Texting while driving, claimed it’s latest victim; this time a your girl. This case is particularly troublesome because it was her own father who’s texting led to her death. Jonathan Harp of Lima, pleaded guilty to attempted vehicular homicide in the accident that took the life of one of his children and left the other in critical care.

According to his own admission,Mr. Harp was going 55 miles an hour while writing a text, when he crashed into the back of a truck. If found guilty he may go to prison for a year; though, as a father my self, I can’t imagine any punishment greater than knowing your carelessness led to the death of your child. I wonder if you are already “Living in Hell”, do you care about being moved to a prison.

Getting a ticket for “Texting while driving” will effect you car insurance rates for up to the next three years. Police are starting to focus on drivers that are violating the no texting law and insurance companies are charging more for car insurance based on the points on your MVR.
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) has done a great job drawing attention to Drunk Driving. It is clear that driving while intoxicated is irresponsible, dangerous and illegal; it is time to recognize Texting while driving as an even greater distraction. While Seven states and the District of Columbia have banned “Driving while texting,” it has failed to seriously limit people from continuing what statistics show is reckless behavior. A new survey found that 26% of drivers admit to Texting while driving. With a son a year away from driving, I find it additionally frightening that nearly 60% of drivers between ages 16 to 19 admitted on the survey to doing so. For those under 25, texting is the principle way they communicate; actually using a cell phone to TALK, is only done after several texts back and forth.
We need to raise awareness, before more parents need to bury their child.

Once famous lottery winner now broke (WalletPop)

Oct 7th 2009 11:36AM Where did the money go?

Let's "Do the math."

Had the person taken the option of the complete payment all at once, he would have gotten $2,500,00. After taxes the remaining amount would be left with about $1,000,000. Based on the unsustainable expectation of a 10% return- he would have an income of $100,000/ year. Most endowments or trusts use a figure of 5% that more rational figure would have provided him with a yearly figure of $50,000.
Therefore he should have based his lifestyle on the expectation of a garmented middle-class income.

He chose the 20 year payment option or $219,000 a year, after taxes about $130,000 of which he would need to put apx half of that money away to have enough to sustain him.

Should We Be Open-Sourcing Detroit? (Switched)

Dec 10th 2008 5:09PM Clearly the "Big 3" need to rethink the kinds of cars they are offering to the American market. But I also understand they were selling Massive SUVs because the public wanted them. People were buying and they were profitable. We are critical of Detroit for not making the cars people are looking for while at the same time finding fault with them for selling SUVs when they were in demand.

KEN THOMAS wrote about U.S. automakers drawing fresh skepticism from lawmakers Thursday, over their pleas for an expanded $34 billion rescue package they say they need to survive.. Congressional analysts said one bailout plan under consideration would fall short of what the car-makers want.

I know opposition to the bailout is strong by many in congress, But the truth is we have no choice !
Yes it will cost us a lot of money to bail out Detroit's Big Three auto makers, but less than it will cost not to, and loose those jobs.
If those 1,000,000 jobs disappear, the tax payers end up with a $10 Billion bill for Unemployment insurance. The US government gets stuck with paying all of the pensions- and another $20 Billion. Then you have the loss of income tax, state taxes, sales tax, I did not do that math but at would clearly again come in at billions of dollars.

America will end up with maybe 2,000,000 more people without medical insurance, the government will again have to step in and pick-up those costs. Just because a family finds it's self with out insurance, does not mean they will not end up in a hospital receiving expensive medical care. Unable to pay for insurance or the resulting bills, the states and the federal government will need to address those bills; shot of that help; hospitals all across Michigan, Indiana and Illinois will be forced to close.

Not only does the auto industry directly and indirectly account for more than 2,000,000 US. jobs, but those jobs are disproportionately concentrated in Midwestern states. Detroit's economy, already in deep recession, will find it's self in a "Death spiral". Illinois and Indiana each have close ties to the auto industry and will see greatly increased unemployment. While home values have taken a hit coast to coast, concentrated job loss will result in drastic drops in home prices in those areas. How many banks will fail because ex GM workers will not be able to pay their mortgages? Does Congress turn down the big three, only to then bail out the banks that got stuck with the mortgages that the auto workers could no longer pay.

GM is not too big to fail - it is just too big for it to be in our interest to let it fail.

GM to cut truck production by 300K units by 2009, cuts V8 development (Autoblog Green)

Jul 16th 2008 2:04PM There was a time when people that bought Pick-Up trucks, and large SUVs, did so because they had a real business need for those vehicles. We are now at the tail end of a wave of consumers buying these over-sized trucks because "They look cool"

With The price of gas in 2008 hitting $5.00, there has been a major turn away from these large trucks to a car that will get twice the miles per dollar spent.

http://urbannewsblog.blogspot.com/2008/06/price-of-gas-in-2008.html

A lot of people are really hurting, and anything that can be done to lower costs, is going to be looked at with great care.

'Why I Let My Kids Drink' (News Bloggers)

May 2nd 2008 5:56PM Adolescent binge-drinking is a very real problem in the country today. Reports show clearly that underage and obsessive drinking are extremely common on college campuses. There is no question that such destructive behavior can have devastating results.

What is not clear is that rising the drinking age to 21 has in any way help solve this problem.

It seems as if instead of a college kids going to a bar and having 2 or 3 drinks at $4.00 each; they are sitting in a dorm room drinking down a fifth of Vodka.

Is the Cure Worse that the problem?

Jan 28th 2008 7:27PM Well we don't have a dog, but we do have a bird.

In an average month the bird does about $500 in damages.

This year we have replaced the keyboards from each of the 4 laptops in our home. He has destroyed more than a 10 zippers, destroyed coats, shirts, shoes, plants, furniture you name it.

But he is a member of the family; so he stays.

The Real Da Vinci Code? (News Bloggers)

Nov 12th 2007 4:29PM I am confused why so many Christians spend so much effort trying to disprove that Dan Brown's book describes Leonardo's Last Supper as having Mary Magdalene sitting net to Jesus.

Let me say that:
1. I have seen the painting and it "Looks" like a woman sitting next to Jesus.
2. Da Vinci was one of the finest artists to ever live.
3. Da Vinci was one of the most brilliant people to ever walk this earth.

But So What!
Last time I checked, Da Vinci painted the Last Supper about 1,500 years after the death of Jesus.
Da Vinci had no "INSIDE INFORMATION"
If Brown is correct, and Da Vinci did believe that Jesus was married, that does not make it true.
Remember, Da Vinci did spend time working on Alchemy!

Nobel Prize Winner Makes Racist Remarks -- Again (News Bloggers)

Oct 18th 2007 6:40PM It is upsetting when people misuse science to justify racist junk, it is more depressing when it is done by a scientist.
