Dad's age linked to autism? (ParentDish)
Sep 6th 2006 4:43PM Theda, sadly, even with a PhD,you cannot "be sure your child has everything". You cannot control life lik that, and those of us who do have children know firsthand that sometimes, bad things happen and a PhD guarantees NOTHING,dear. Nor does money,or young age for that matter! It is true that autistic children and others with other issues are born to parents of all ages. It is a miracle everytime a child is born,no matter what the age of the parents or the problems the child may have or develop. My son actually died in his sleep and they never found out why. So all of you happy moms out there, even if your child seems to have very bad problems,be thankful that you at least still have them, and PLEASE spend time with them as much as you can and appreciate them every day and hour. Work and money and career and "having a life" which Theda said we shouldn't deny those who decide to wait to have children mean nothing compared to wonderful times spent with children and family. Take care all-i hope you all always have healthy children, mentally and physically, and that you all plan for, love and have time for them.

Sep 6th 2006 4:34PM Theda,I have worked in school districts in many capacities. I am fifty and know more than anyone your age-sorry,but it's true. Wait until you have kids to talk about parenting. My nephew is autistic, and I highly doubt that anyone WANTS their child to have aspergers or any other autistic spectrum illness. It is a very serious thing. i am NOT saying I thinkl age causes autism. i am saying that overall,if one CAn,it is optimum for the children's future health (and the Mom's ) to have children, and especially the first under age thirty. that is the ideal,of course all have to decide what is best for them and their specific circumstances. it is just BETTER,medically,(ask any OBGYN) to have one children younger-but not too young. It all depends on the people involved. but autism should also not be given cuesy names. it is heartbreaking at first to learn one's child is ill. But any label they put on a child doesn't change the wonderful person they were and still are. I would like to add that I never had to struggle or have two jobs, even though I was 25 and 27 when my kids were born, and I am sorry if that happened to anyone. but one cannot say that it is NEVER a good time to have children in one's mid or even early twenties. it depends on if the parents had the resources to care for and raise the children. i did at 25,due to careful planning of my life and great fortune, but not every younger parent has that. it is still healthier for all concerned for children to be conceived and born when the Mom and dad are under thirty! No doctor or scientist or educator would dispute this fact.

Sep 6th 2006 4:03PM MOST of us do sgree with Olga! Not you Theda...what are talking about with "breeding"? What are you,a cow? i planned my two wonderful children and had them at 25 and 27 and am perfectly happy and successful and not poor or stupid, and have several advanced degrees...why are you going so crazy trying to justify your (poor.probably) desision to have children as a last priority. those who don't want to have children earlier -by choice-maybe should not ever have them. Seems they weren't very important in your plans!

Sep 6th 2006 3:50PM Theda,Some of DID plan to have all our children before 30-as I very successfully did. What makes you think the only good plan is to put one's self or career first? I PLANNED to put my childrens' health and best interests first and so i had them in my mid-twenties. What doctor will tell anyone it is BETTER for the children to wait until after thirty to have one's first child? None. Ha!
