I am, BTW, one of those "unionized quasi-professionals." Though, honestly, on good days, I do flatter myself and drop the "quasi-." Oh, and I don't pay much attention to the Department of Education, either.

Aug 10th 2010 1:41PM This stance wholly negates the effect(s) of the medium itself. Remember "The medium is the message"? When people speak of their education, it is usually to reference a particular teacher whom they credit for something momentous in their lives. Or, perhaps, a particular book. Where does all that "human value" go when only a screen is in front of you? Away, I would think.

Thanks for your wise and compassionate remarks. The boy is to be pitied, certainly, as is his family, I suppose. But he has been in this kind of trouble before - more than once - and rehab and "home detention being carried out by a private company" isn't getting the job done. It's time for the boy to grow up, pay the piper, and be responsible for himself. In short, he righteously needs some hard time. There does come a time when the ministrations and interventions of guilt-ridden parents obstruct any progress, any chance of "recovery." Don't you think, finally, the courts have to step up and give this boy what he's never had - a jail cell.
