How would you change Apple's HDMI-equipped Mac mini? (Engadget)
Aug 14th 2010 11:38AM How about making it wall mountable. Would give those buying it for the brand the possibility to get a nice surface with a lighted Apple that none of their friends can ignore when visiting. At least that would give something noticeable for the Apple tax.
Exclusive: Upcoming Apple TV loses 1080p playback, gains apps... and will be renamed iTV (Engadget)
Aug 12th 2010 7:28PM I can't believe it took more than 7 hours for someone to notice that the current Apple TV can't output 1080 video either. Massive fail on you guys!
Actually I predicted the AMD Ontario to be the perfect match for Apple TV, as it would be able to run the 1080p output people expect from a high end TV box, or at least they would use a nVidia ION setup with a Atom CPU. After all the Apple TV software was made to run on x86 devices. But going with the Apple A4 I don't think it's the need to have an upgrade path that keeps them from going above 720p, but rather that the chip can't output such high resolution.
For those who want an Apple'ish TV box I would recommend waiting for the Boxee Box by D-Link. It got a stronger dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU coupled with nVidias Tegra 2 chipset allowing it to output 1080p if that's what you want. On the software side it seems like it's a match for the usability associated with most Apple devices and has Applications as well.

Aug 3rd 2010 6:12PM @timg123 The TG model is reviewed at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-Aspire-3820TG-Timeline-X-Notebook.30294.0.html
Personally I would go for the 4820 model, for the extra battery life and better graphics.

Aug 2nd 2010 5:34PM How about the Acer TimelineX series?
Specifically the Acer Aspire 4820TG-434G64Mn
The specs on the machine is a Core i5-430M processor, the Radeon HD 5650 graphics chip, four GB DDR3 RAM and two hard disks, which offer a total storage space of 640 GB.
The thing that makes it really special is the fact that it on the battery, using the graphics in the processor, can deliver battery time beating those of the 13 inch MacBook Pro. If you need more power you just plug it in and you can switch to the more powerful Radeon HD 5650 graphics.

Jul 21st 2010 6:40PM @Aguiluz It's possibly because it wasn't a big problem back then. After all hardly anyone would hold their phone like that, sadly for Apple some do touch the lower left of their phone bridging the gab that shouldn't be bridged.
TSMC begins construction of new $9.3b foundry, wants to sate our constant hunger for chips (Engadget)
Jul 17th 2010 3:59PM @(Unverified)
Info from http://www.globalfoundries.com/manufacturing/300mm.aspx
Fab 8 - Saratoga County, NY
Building on the history of developing award-winning semiconductor manufacturing facilities around the world, GLOBALFOUNDRIES is building the most advanced 300mm wafer fab in the world at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York. Construction of the new fab began in July 2009 and is the largest commercial economic development project in the USA.
Maximum Full Capacity: 60,000 300mm wafers/month
(More than 135,000 200mm wafers/month equivalent)
Technology: 28nm and below
I realize that it's only around half the production capacity, but it's something like the TSMC factory.

Jul 17th 2010 3:50PM @MManLA
According to the Press Release the factory won't start volume production before Q1 2012, so I hope for nVidia that they will have something newer than Fermi to produce by then. After all Fermi is not likely to stay at the top for 1½ year. Especially with AMD responding to the Fermi threats with the ATI Radeon 6xxx Series that, according to a slip of the tongue from Kenny Chow at HIS, is to be announced later this year around Q4 2010(some say October, but no clear sources on that rumor).
Another thing that will be interesting to see is how nVidia will do in the role as TSMCs guinea pig, after all ATi have usually been the ones first on a new production process, but with 28 nm they're likely to go to Global Foundries.
Inside Apple's 'black lab' wireless testing facilities (update: video) (Engadget)
Jul 17th 2010 6:39AM @algarop Actually it's not 0.55% who had the reception issues, it's 0.55% who decided to call Apple Care on the issue.
I'm quite sure that I, if I had bought an iPhone 4, wouldn't have called Apple Care on the antenna, even if I had the issue. After all it didn't take long before it was made public that a seemingly large group of buyers had the problem, making the issue something Apple had to move on, and that Apples best bid on a solution was either holding the iPhone differently or buying a case. One more complaint wouldn't make a difference.
In other news 600,000 iPhone 4 cases have been sold, I wonder if some of those were bought to deal with the antenna problem? I guess we'll never know.
