Restaurant Bans Young Children (AOL Small Business)
Jul 13th 2011 10:01AM I love it when this subject comes up. Everyone takes to their soapbox, and all I can say is ugh, people. All kids are not bad, all kids are not good. Kids are kids.
First of all, why do you even WANT to go out to dinner with the kids, if what you want is a nice quiet adult meal? Who wants to spend the entire mealtime entertaining, cleaning-up, cajoling, talking to, and disciplining their children? What kid wants to order food and then have to wait for it, all the while having to sit still and "behave"? They are not used to doing that. Everyone knows that the family dinner table is all about the kids--their schedules, their interests, their activities. Don't you get enough of that at home? Why do you want to take it outside, where conditions are far less than ideal, and distractions are rampant? Been there, done that.
When my two bouncing boys were small, we ate at home. We worked on table manners. When dining out was necessary, as on a family vacation or for a special treat, we were able to choose from among many family-friendly, suitable establishments. It was not too much trouble to see that some kind of naptime was had by all prior to going out, and we always had a "contingency plan" in case things went south in a hurry; the most important component of this "contingency plan" was establishing a threshold for unacceptable behaviour, making sure it was understood, and then putting it into motion quickly and quietly.
I have observed that most "problems" arise from the parent not acting quickly enough. Most parents have good intentions, but just don't realise that action can't be delayed until the coffee is finished or the last beer is drained. I have seen parents get sulky and resentful when one has to leave and the other gets to stay and finish dessert. And I guess I really don't blame them. Taking young children out to a restaurant requires as much planning as a space flight--think, Murphy's Law. Misbehaviour should be the expected norm, "good" behaviour is a pleasant surprise.
IMHO, if you need to bring baby carrier, diaper bag, toys, books, blankets, cups, bottles, burp rags, baby wipes, etc., you are not going to have a good time. Just stay home and have a picnic.
Surprising Cat Facts - 10 Things You Don't Know About Your Favorite Feline (Pawnation OLD)
Apr 6th 2011 9:54AM One should not generalize in this situation. More likely, there are other environmental issues there as well.
Having raised children with both dog(s) and cat(s), guinea pigs, hamsters, lizards and etc, I have found that the 'dirtiest' was the dog because of all the outdoor contaminents she brought in with her. However, neither of my children were ever sick with anything that could be directly attributed to any animal.
Middle-Aged Women and Short Hair -- What Gives? (Lemondrop)
Oct 26th 2010 8:13AM What's the point of having long hair if you're only going to put it up all the time?
I am in my late 50's and have kept my hair "medium-short" for three years now. I loved it long, but hated the maintenance--it was not as thick as it used to be and had no body or gloss without daily washing and blow drying. Not to mention, tons of "product".
I am post-menopausal and I am certain that the hormonal changes had a lot to do with it. I see many women my age who have longer hair that just looks stringy and dirty, which is how mine looked too. I now wear a choppy, shaggy layer -cut and just love it. And I can do so much more with it than a ponytail, or the dreaded bun.
Boney James Hospitalized After Being Hit by Driver (Spinner)
May 19th 2010 1:49PM Someone please explaine the term "suspected drunk driver". What is the driver "suspected of"? He was drunk and he was driving, so what's to "suspect"?

What Your Vet Thinks About Your Pet's Name - And About You (Pawnation OLD)
May 17th 2010 10:38AM I have a female cat named Sambuca, because we like the stuff; a male cat named Elvis, because he shares a birthday with The King; and a greyhound named Eleanor, because she really is "Gone in 60 Seconds" when we open the gate to the big yard.
Hot or Not? FitFlop (Shopping Articles Blog)
May 3rd 2010 2:24PM A few years ago I was bothered by plantar fascaitis (sp?). When the foot doc told me to lose my flipflops I though I was going to die. I mean, I live in flipflops. Well, I pretty much ignored his advice and paid the price for a couple of years. Then I got myself a pair of Fitflops just to see...
Well, last year I bought another pair. I don't know about the toning and firming, but they are certainly comfortable. They are soft, yet supportive; and my legs and feet do not feel as tired and achy after wearing them like they do in regular flipflops. I have not had any re-occurance of foot problems either.
The footbed is wide and kind of squishy which seems to cradle the foot and support it. The wide straps are placed further back so that the foot does not move much from side to side and makes for more secure walking.
It does take a while to become accustomed to walking in them, since they are much larger than regular flipflops. I tripped a bit until I learned to pick up my feet a little more, one does tend to get a bit sloppy in flipflops.

Opinion: Let New Moms Bring Babies to Work (ParentDish)
Mar 29th 2010 8:53AM No no no. Do NOT bring your kid into my workspace. I have had experience with co-workers bringing babies and have watched them struggle with fussing, feeding, changing and spitting; all the while trying not attract undue attention. You simply cannot relax in the office like you can at home, which means you are stressed and baby is stressed too.
This was a CPA firm and we had a lot of client traffic and every old lady had to stop and admire baby, etc. Partners were upset because meetings were getting behind schedule, co-workers were resenting constant fussing. Bathroom smelled like crap too from dirty diapers, and busy with moms in there all the time cleaning spit up off their blouses.
And don't even get me started on the breastfeeding "room". It was touch and go opening a closed door. They were supposed to use one conference room set aside for them, but somehow it needed to be used for a conference and a mom ended up in a different one. Yuck.
In addition to this, we had one co-worker who absolutely NOT stay home when she was sick, and she was sick a lot. Why you would want to bring an infant into that environment is beyond me.
Follow 'The Bathroom Rule,' and Perfect Texting Etiquette Will Follow (Switched)
Mar 24th 2010 3:03PM How rude is it to carry on a conversation with a third party while engaged in a face to face conversation.
I had a dear friend who used to do it all the time until finally I told him that when he came by to see me I assumed he wanted to talk to me and not leave me hanging while he answered text message after text message.
I feel the same about those people who call on the phone and then place their hand over the receiver and proceed to talk to people in the room with them, while I am waiting for their attention to return to me. I usually hang up on them when they do that.
