Delta Air Lines charges returning soldiers for checked bags (Gadling)
Jun 8th 2011 7:35AM Pretty soon these greedy airlines will be selling you a ticket for a dollar, but making you pay $1000 to "rent" a seat to sit in during the flight. Who, except for business day travelers, gets on a plane without any baggage to check (unless it is one of those jerks with carry on bags the size of a condo who whack you on the head when they try to load it into the overhead bin). So, in their quest to charge the "least" for a ticket, but add on huge fees for essential services, you have this snafu. Of course, the government does it as well - "no new taxes" is trumpeted all over the place, but new fees?? Well they are not a tax, but paying twice as much to register my car still costs the same as taxing it.
Was I Right to Change My Daughter's School Because of Bullying? (ParentDish)
Jan 23rd 2011 3:42PM Everybody talks about being "bullied". Nobody says what that actually means. Children react to their parent's fears and reactions. If a kid who wears glasses is being called "four eyes" sees a mother going ballistic....well, he/she views it (not knowing that there are MANY worse things that can happen to you) as "the end of the world". Prompting suicides, depression, strident reports of the AWFULNESS of "bullying" in the politically correct media, but really nothing that actually describes what has happened. So, we have the hysteria, leading to overreaction.
I would LIKE to see every report of "bullying" explicitly report on what it entails - and NOT from the kid or mother, but from an impartial observer - I bet all the hooplah will die out once we see that what we thought as a gang of kids attacking some wimpy kid with baseball bats was really some middle school student getting a few text messages from a few other girls berating her for wearing the wrong designer jeans!
Bullies have existed for years - and guess what, mommy will not be able to help you when you are an adult and some guy flips you off from his car !
Tourist Killed By Bus At Walt Disney World (AOL Travel News)
Dec 27th 2010 11:06AM If you walk out in front of a bus or train, you may have the "right of way" but you can STILL be dead if you are stupid. Didn't your mother tell you to look both ways when you crossed the street. I am sure that the bus did not "aim" at the guy, but could not stop in time as he stepped out in front of it. Reminds me of the old rhyme about boating and velles right-of-way:
Here lies the body of Captain O'Day
Who dies while maintaining his right of way,
He was right, dead right, as he sailed along,
But he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong......
The Controversy Over 'Busty' Barbie and Our Idolatry of Hookers (BV Black Spin)
May 27th 2010 8:00AM That dumb prude cow probably buys the Enquirer, watches "American Idol", and now is upset cause a doll (like many of the women these days) has large plastic boobs.
She probably has a McCain/Palin sticker on her bumper, and chants "drill baby drill".
Health Care Rationing and My 91-Year-Old Dad (Politics Daily)
Jul 29th 2009 5:16PM The article is not an sort of objective writing - in fact, I agree only with one statement: "And people who want to grasp every last chance will at some point need to pay for it themselves either through private insurance or their own money".
As a physician in practive (at the VA, incidentally) the part not addressed by the writer's discussion of his 91 year old father's care is the "flip side" - for every hundred thousand dollars we spend on the old guy, there are other younger, salvageable people who will NOT get the care they need. Mr Weiss seems to think that the issue is whether we should spend money on patients who statistically would not do well - I think it is whether an exceptional expenditure on a person near the end of their life is more important than intervening in a 55 year old guy with college age-kids to give HIM another 20 years with a bypass, carotid angiogram, or treatment of high blood pressure - since there is only a finite amount of money available for health care and what you spend on one person is simply less for another. THAT is what rationing is, not whether one should pull out all the stops for a person who is (at 91) 15 years above average life expectancy. Readers should ask themselves whether they will be happy with the feel-good approach to this guy's geriatric father when they or their children need chemotherapy or surgery but the doctor tells them "sorry we have already used our allotment of funds, so you can't have that at present". Health care rationing is like a budget - you cann't spend all you have on just one thing.
Animals and money: Bronx Zoo lays off hundreds of 'unpopular' animals (WalletPop)
Apr 27th 2009 4:55PM Dumbing down is the politically correct way of dealing with ignorance and laziness - Kids doing poorly on SAT's? Just give them easier questions and partial credit for being able to write their own name. Poof - they are "smart". Dumb kids in the classroom - give grades based on EFFORT - sure, they still think 2+2 = 5, but they worked REAL HARD on it ! The best of all, stifle creativity, individuality, and breadth of knowledge by having "religious" schools where all you REALLY need is to know ONE BOOK written by a bunch of guys a thoushand years ago. Science? Literature? Ethics? If it's not in there, BURN IT!!!
Canada rules obese get second seat free on flights in Canada (WalletPop)
Nov 23rd 2008 2:50PM each year they squeeze in an extra row - i hate the window seat since it is way too cramped for me although i do OK in the aisle. I am not small, but not huge - i have noticed the seats are also narrower. Remember when on 737's the seats were 2+3, but now there are 3 seats on each side of the aisle??
And i sympathize with the guy riding side saddle - came back from NYC on continental - the flight would have been bearable, but the 90 minutes extra after the pushback (you know that they count "departure time" as the time they close the cabin door, even if the thing sits 20 feet away from the gate for HOURS, right?) made it awful !
Racists React to Obama Victory (Politics Daily)
Nov 13th 2008 6:15PM All who say obama is not "qualified" have bought into the mccain attacks. He is JUST as qualified as mccain - neither has been a governor, neither has served in the white house, and neither have moose stew as their favorite dish. Don't vote for anybody who is "just like you" - you are talking of the president (or potential president) of a major world power. vote for the BEST - and nominating a running mate whose foreign policy skill is based on what countries they can see from their state just ain't good enough. I bet BIDEN knows that africa is a continent. in fact, even you aol trolls probably know that !
Have You Ever Checked Your Significant Other's E-Mail? (Switched)
Nov 13th 2008 4:52PM Personally, i would consider somebody reading my email, postal mail, listening to voicemail etc totally intrusive. I would feel the same way if it were my wife (OK i am not married, but IF i had one LOL). The problem is that there IS somebody suspicious enough to spy on you, they are also suspicious enough to create scenarios which appear to be insulting (women love to say a racy email is "cheating").
The "why would she say THAT unless you are DOING IT WITH HER" is a question we men cannot answer. You can agree that you ARE guilty (so of course you have lost) or you can say you are not doing what you accused of doing - which means that you are a liar AND a cheater.
The people who say they have nothing to hide so it is OK probably voted for Bush and are happy to give up their right to privacy.
Seance Snafu: Obama Apologizes to Reagan (Politics Daily)
Nov 8th 2008 12:24AM America is truly lost if we continue down the road of losing our sense of humor and developing increasingly thin skins. All that our enemies have to do is throw an insult our way and righteous indignantion will be the end of us. One look at the numerous spelling and grammatical errors displayed by posters to this area shows the caliber of the GOP "base". Too much emotion, and too little "schoolin".
