First downtowns, and now suburbs: how cars change American geography (Autoblog Green)

Feb 13th 2010 6:00PM @Evan, Re: France gives it's citizens free health care, free child care,

Sorry, well actually I'm not, it is not "free": money for health care workers wages and salaries, the electric bill for the clinic, supplies for the janitors, MUST come from somewhere.
Where?

Michelle Obama in Blue on Veterans Day (Stylelist)

Nov 12th 2009 3:09PM I'd say the belt didn't work.
What's wrong with blue?
It is one of the national colors in our flag.
Most of the services have some blue in their normal uniforms for USN, USCG, USAF, and in dress uniforms for USMC, and US Army, if memory serves correctly.
After all, look at the guy behind her.
Bright blue to keep the memories of the Veterans bright.

Wait a minute: could there be a "Medical Exemption" given?
You take the pills and have eating restrictions, but not much more you can do about it.

Will Oprah Be Judged for Matron's Crime? (Blackvoices Main)

Feb 27th 2008 2:12PM Marcus, I think you're right on target - 1000 point bullseye.
Katina, you make good points as well.
Can't think of much to add other than pointing out to the rest of the posters, remember, individuals make their own choices about their own actions - You are responsible for Your decisions to act or not act - no one else can be inside Your head making Your decisions, only You.
Meaning, the alleged abuser is solely accountable, not Oprah.

Jan 15th 2008 10:10AM Hey, S.S. Young, calm down, take off caps lock and check your spelling.
It will be clearer reading that way.
And more people will be inclined to pay attention to your point.

Five Things You Need to Know About Digital TV Coupons (Switched)

Jan 15th 2008 9:55AM Zing!!!

doda says:
""These converters will no doube be made in China.""

As an aside, there's an abandoned Toastmaster factory around the corner from us and our apartment is an old Selwyn-Brown shoe factory building.

Wonder how many people in this rural town of approximately 8700 used to work there?

Where do ya figure shoes and toasters come from now?

Five Things You Need to Know About Digital TV Coupons (Switched)

Jan 15th 2008 9:45AM I'm not sure why this is government responsibility: broadcast companies are businesses, not government agencies.
If a business wishes its products to be used then the onus is upon them to make their product usable.
Television production and advertising provide jobs and sales. If the employers and sellers wish to keep themselves actively employing and selling, then making themselves "reachable" to their customers is their responsibility.

See where I'm going here?

I am saying this as a person who does not have cash floating around loose to buy the converter box. The kids are grown and gone so keep in mind that influence on my attitude isn't there.

There's another track to take on this debate point of "It's up to the seller to make his goods available to consumers". A parallel that really isn't perfectly applicable but that makes a point: Whose responsibility is it to provide roads to the shopping centres?
Should the stores wanting to sell you things build and pay for the roads to get there?
Or do the roads serve the entire community and should the community as a whole pay for and build the roads?

Another point is that government does have an interest in the matter by way of taxes generated by commerce created as a result of the entertainment industry and sales of advertisers' products.
If you don't know about the goods and services you won't buy and sales taxes won't be generated.
If the sellers aren't selling, they won't be employing and income and corporate taxes won't be generated.
So, is the money spent on vouchers less than the potential lost revenue?

And now that I don't seem to be solidly on ANY side of the argument, I'm done!
