Japanese Food Imports Tested for Radiation (Slashfood)

Mar 17th 2011 9:57PM Nancy, Irradiated food is totally different than food that's absorbed radioactive material. Food is irradiated with gamma rays produced from radioactive cobalt. The gamma rays pass through, killing bacteria, molds, yeasts, and any other things on the food. But, the food does not become radioactive from it.

When a power plant blows it's uranium into the air, some of that will settle on the soil, and on the plants growing there. That will continue to give off radiation for a while. It's the neutrons that come out of the uranium that are the problem. Of course, the gamma rays are too, since you can't shut off the radioactivity from the uranium. Maybe, a thorough washing will get the particles off the food and down the drain. What's growing in Japan at this time of year?

The Great Burger Cook-Off: Eating Out vs. Cooking at Home -- Savings Experiment (WalletPop)

Mar 3rd 2011 10:02PM So LarrBerr, the ONLY time you use a tomato or lettuce, etc is on a burger? No wonder they go to waste!

Try putting some sliced tomato on your egg in the morning, or in your lunch sandwich. Use the lettuce and tomato to make a great salad. Etc.

I am a personal chef here on Long Island. I wish you lived near here, so I could cook for you...

The Great Burger Cook-Off: Eating Out vs. Cooking at Home -- Savings Experiment (WalletPop)

Mar 3rd 2011 9:55PM Brian, "food will go to waste, especially if you're single or just a couple." I don't know why you say that. My wife and I are "just a couple," AND we buy most of our food at w warehouse store, but we almost never waste anything. How? We use the freezer on our refrigerator. When we buy one of those big packs of 5 steaks (for example), we wrap them individually in plastic wrap, put them in a zipper bag, and freeze them. Or, we buy the pack of individually frozen and wrapped fish fillets. Then, we take one out for dinner the evening before we plan to make it. Also, we make meals big enough for that time, or maybe some for the next day.

And, we buy tons of fresh fruits and veggies, and they also don't stay around long enough to go bad.

Not saying this as a critique of you or anyone, but an example of not wasting...

Regards

Sausage Dinner Recipes (Kitchen Daily)

Feb 27th 2011 12:17AM Skip, The word "sausage" in the heading IS the health warning. By my method, each full-size pork sausage counts for 5 points, a hefty portion of one's 30-40 point daily allowance.

New Guidelines Would Make School Lunches Healthier (ParentDish)

Jan 18th 2011 9:57AM Guess you don't remember air pollution where you couldn't go outside, rivers that caught fire--here in the US!, and many other things that the "free market" has been unwilling to take care of on its own Same thing with schools serving cheap unhealthy foods.
