Sneaky department store tricks that get you to spend more (WalletPop)

Apr 22nd 2010 7:15AM I am totally with you, Marilyn. I can't stand the smell of the perfume and the obvious, in-your-face tactics that are used in marketing. They aren't sneaky, they're just the way stores use money. In fact, to me, they seem rather obvious and not sneaky at all. But to me, they are a total turn-off. I've been in a mall only a couple of times over the past 5 years, really only to get specific things that had to be purchased at specific stores. But yes, the overpowering deluge of perfume when you first walk into a store or the pushy salespeople attacking you upon entry are a guarantee I will walk right out again!

Volcanic Ash Crisis Deepens in Europe (Politics Daily)

Apr 19th 2010 7:04AM Yes, really not getting what was ever comical about a volcano exploding!? Perhaps there's something comical about Iceland??? Certainly was nothing comical to any of the people I personally know who were directly affected by it! Who writes this nonsense!?

Time Inc. to close Southern Accents magazine (Daily Finance)

Aug 8th 2009 5:51AM Maybe what the author meant to say was that the magazine's life spanned three decades -- the 80s, 90s, and 00s. Not that it literally was 30 years old. Awkward writing, but not unreasonable.

Hot Seat: Worst Debate Ever? (Politics Daily)

Apr 17th 2008 3:12PM Who writes these ridiculous poll questions??? They obviously have no training in polling or questionnaire writing. The questions are always so poorly written.

Hot Seat: Is Obama a Fake Christian? (Politics Daily)

Apr 15th 2008 12:30PM All politicians are "fake" whatever they claim to be. The religiosity of the candidate does not enter into it for me. Besides -- Bush is supposed to be a "born-again" Christian, and he's one of the worst presidents we've ever had.

Bobby Clampett on 'Chinaman': If I Offended Anybody Please Accept My Sincere Apologies (Fanhouse Golf Blog)

Apr 12th 2008 2:55PM 27. Slanted eyes is a racial slur, so if he said mexican man he is being racial or black man. Nobody gives a damn!"

"Chinese man" (like Mexican man, in your example) would not be offensive. But this was "Chinaman," which has additional connotations that are based on characatures of stereotypical behaviors and misconceptions. You can't simply look at comparable words (which you didn't). There's more to it than that. And sometimes, if you don't find it offensive, someone else might. That's what should matter.

Pasta Shape Identification Quiz (Slashfood)

Mar 31st 2008 11:26AM 21 out of 24 -- everything I know is from (besides eating) the children's book "Noodleman: the Pasta Superhero." Great book if you love pasta!
