Google turns 11 -- and Microsoft is its next target before turning 20 (BloggingStocks)
Oct 2nd 2009 5:34PM It's obvious: Microsoft is a conservative company, doing business conservatively and with tons of market research to back it up; everything product they release an improvement of an old idea, and in this economy, their conservatism is getting even more extreme - justifiably so, as they see it. Google however, is a bunch of ounger guys who are still passionate in their choices rather than conservative. Look at the risk involved in having photographers as well as satellites take photos of every corner of the globe! Many laughed at their silliness. Yet, passion fuels their decisions and in that regard, they predict almost psychicly what people get into. People who love technology and Google Earth make more money than the average. That was a niche market a decade ago, but not so much now. In other words, Microsoft invests in the masses, while Google invests in that too (they started with a search engine) AND niche markets. And then, they're smart enough to turn these niche markets into larger groups! I admire them. They're calculated AND intuitive. THAT is what makes a company take off and stay there these days.
Tweeting About HBO Star's Dine And Dash Gets Waiter Fired (Switched)
Oct 2nd 2009 4:27PM I agree with you Bob; however, in this case, this isn't so much about the actress and what she did as much as it is about an ongoing debate about how Twitter - by its nature - is causing people to overexpose themselves and how it affects their lives in the negative. You have to put this story in the proper context - its intrinsic impact is negligeable, Twitter is the real story.
Tweeting About HBO Star's Dine And Dash Gets Waiter Fired (Switched)
Oct 2nd 2009 4:17PM Sorry, David but he DOESN'T have a case: 1. I don't know where you got the part where she assaulted him, but she did not. She "stormed in" and "handed him $3", that's all. You misunderstood - read it again - so let's eliminate that. 2. The only thing left is not paying the bill THAT DAY. She did that TO THE RESTAURANT, NOT TO HIM. She also FIXED it the next day and the restaurant ACCEPTED her payment, which invalidated any claim hereafter. Case closed - before it even starts. To paraphrase you, it'll interest you to know that in L.A. - where I live - most restaurants do NOT go after actors for unpaid bills. The reason: it happens a LOT. For the most part, they are emotional people BY NATURE - that's why they act - and can get very distracted in those "moments". Restaurant owners call "their people" and everything is resolved that way. And I managed to say all this without bragging about what I do for a living... ^_^
Woman Survives Week in Wilderness by Sucking Water From Her Hair (Lemondrop)
Sep 21st 2009 6:29PM LOL My friend doesn't LEAVE in NJ, he LIVES in NJ! Sorry for the typo. It's not usually like me...
Woman Survives Week in Wilderness by Sucking Water From Her Hair (Lemondrop)
Sep 21st 2009 6:25PM Some people don't avoid deer ONLY to save the deer: hitting even just 1 deer (and she saw a HERD!) can kill YOU. Example: a friend who leaves in NJ hit one on a freeway. It got stuck in the windshield, still alive but injured, and proceeded to use all fours to kick my friend everywhere there is muscle/bone/meat! His face was relatively spared but he ended up spending nearly 2 months in a hospital, even though the accident itself caused him NO INJURIES! MORE PEOPLE DIE FROM DEER THAN ANY OTHER ACCIDENT TYPE IN THE US.
Sorority Suspended Over Allegations of Starving, Abusing Pledges (Lemondrop)
Sep 5th 2009 11:52PM I have 3 degrees and speak 7 languages. THAT helps a resume a lot more than anything else! mAny countires don not have sororities (I was educated in one) and the only result is MORE TIME TO STUDY - which is why there are many more graduates as well as many more doctors and scientists (there aren't enough docs here and the US scientific community is full of European and Indian scientists). As to charity, you don't need a sorority to do it (I've distributing blankets to the homeless out of my own pocket every winter for 17 years). Lastly, the social skills argument: I've dabbed in public speaking in my fields and apparently, CONFIDENCE is all that's needed. Time to DROP this outdated tradition and modernize America. IF AMERICAN WOMEN WEREN'T SO COMPETITIVE WITH EACH OTHER, THEY WOULDN'T NEED SORORITIES, THEY'D NICE TO EVERYBODY AROUND THEM.
Using frequent flier miles? Prepare to be treated like scum (WalletPop)
May 12th 2009 2:49PM Here's a suggestion for the writer: if you so many miles accumulated, use a few more a book yourself in 1st or at least business class - wherever available. You'll get treated better and have more advantages compared to regular coach bookings.
Using frequent flier miles? Prepare to be treated like scum (WalletPop)
May 12th 2009 2:33PM Airlines have only "so many" seats available to be booked with miles on each flight. They follow the same rule when rebooking a passenger. But if they rebook because THEY cancel you, the rule changes and you have rights. Also, THE WRITER IS GENERALIZING. American Airlines is NOT the #1 airline for most frequent flyers, United is. That's because they have more partners in more countries than any other U.S. airlines, therefore making it easier to have multiple choices and less connections when travelling. That's why United treats its frequent flyers much better. Furthermore, "frequent flyers" can be arrogant - I'm no longer talking about THIS particular article but another common problem. I see people with LOW frequent flyer status expect the world. 100K members out there take precedence because they deserve it. Your meager 25,000 or 50,000 miles per year don't mean anything when 12 others on your flight have the same status and people who fly 100,000+ miles per year will ALWAYS be ahead of you. I should know, I've been one since 1995 and have to tolerate rude "frequent flyers" point at me on a regular basis with an accusatory: "why does SHE get the upgrade?" and other nastier remarks I can't write here. Just trying to put things in perspective. I spend an average of $50,000 a year on plane tickets and United never disrespected me. Only other travellers have...
Are the days of Coca-Cola's VitaminWater numbered? (Daily Finance)
May 11th 2009 2:49PM By the way, if anyone wants to eat healthy and have a healthy weight, the best book I've ever read is from a Sandra Cabot, MD. Can't remembr the title, though...sorry! It explains how to recognize your body type and eat according to it, and how to identify & get tested for - if necessary - the different complications you may have (Syndrom X or insulin resistance, a fatty liver, etc...) and conquer them.
Are the days of Coca-Cola's VitaminWater numbered? (Daily Finance)
May 11th 2009 2:42PM Vitamin, I agree with you. And Sean, "Only calores, plain and simple, are bad when you are trying to lose weight..."
EH??!?!?!!? It's people like you who are responsible for so much misleading BS out there when the truth is actually quite simple. You don't understand much about nutrition. 1. It's spelled "calories". 2. They're not the only factor in weight gain. A fatty liver is a huge factor in the U.S. A slow thyroid is another problem. And look up insulin resistance - Syndrome X - if you're interested in learning. In effect, things that can be healthy to some are not for others who have complications to begin with. And therefore, more than a certain amount of carbs isn't healthy for some people, whereas simple carbs aren't healthy for anyone. Furthermore, women don't lose weight as easily as men do by simply cutting carbs because other (hormonal) things come into play. I got sick of being accused of throwing up when I actually eat a lot and wanted to understand why I never gain weight, so I learned nutrition. (I'm a scientist who never stops learning and doesn't open her mouth unless the data that's coming out of it has been verified...)
