Luxist Giveaway: Tacori Smoky Quartz and Prasiolite Earrings (Luxist)
Sep 27th 2010 7:31PM I love how they bring to mind vintage Hollywood glam, yet appear timeless and versatile. So classic and SO my style! Best of luck to everyone. (:
Retailers Launching Their Own Stimulus Plans to Bring in Shoppers (WalletPop)
Jul 17th 2010 11:00AM They shop for "free", but when they pay, it's adds a 10% surcharge. That's especially deceptive, since anyone can walk into Sam's (with a member???), and be admitted for "free". The cost will always be for the privilege of buying bulk, and getting a cheaper price per unit. So, to break even a year, you should intend to spend $600 there, or so. (Memberships are 60 bucks in my town, and if you save a minimum of 10%, compared to purchasing the same quantity of products elsewhere, then $600/yr will bring you even!)
I prefer to max out my club savings by belonging to one that has it's own in-store coupons AND takes Sunday's coupons and printable ones. Then, that 10% becomes more like 30% or more! They are also cheaper per yr by 15 bucks!
If you decide to buy many of your day to day necessities there, (garbage bags, cleansers, bread, & milk...) with coupons, you'll see significant savings over even the best grocery store promotions, AND you'll have a well-stocked pantry.
Retailers Launching Their Own Stimulus Plans to Bring in Shoppers (WalletPop)
Jul 17th 2010 9:31AM Kevin, it depends on where you shop and the size/needs of your family or small business. I had Sam's for a year, but after the intro rate doubled for renewal, and the primary items I shopped for (diapers, wipes, and pull-ups for my 3 toddlers!) were habitually out of stock, I went a few miles down the road, across the county line, to BJ's Wholesale Club.
Yes, I pay $45 a year at BJ's, but Sam's can be $60+, just to get in the door! For that $45, I get gas that is consistently lower than any station around me by 3-4 cents a gallon, a monthly book of coupons that is standard for ALL members--not just the "Premium" ones like the Sam's Club program that is mentioned in this article, AND BJ's will accept manufacturers' coupons. (Printed AND clipped) These can be combined with their store coupons for savings on bulk items that equal 30-50 percent off individual items.... or more!
Each month, with coupons, I consistently get about 400 dollars of actual merchandise, for 200, or so. That is not a gimmicky REWARDS card total, but a reflection of their unique coupon policies. (for the wholesale club niche) So, as you can see, the $45 I spend a year on Membership comes off my total several times over, EACH MONTH. I've MORE than broken even!
I can't say that shopping wholesale clubs will be the best bargain for my circumstances always, but right now, being a family of 5, with 3 children under 5, it benefits my family hand-down on grocery and household items. Even before coupons are applied, their unit price beats the big box store's weekly sales prices, 90% of the time. (by my own comparison of weekly specials and ounce for ounce/like-kind analyses)
So, I'm not out to argue, but I just don't want a unique, family-oriented club like BJ's to get demonized by the actions and policies of a place like "Wal-Corp's" Sam's Club. I also understand that, possibly, per your own circumstances, places like these won't be a deal. Still, when a free pass comes along, take a tour and see with your own eyes. The tvs, yard and sporting equip, or maybe even the discounted liquor and wine, might be a draw!
Perez Hilton Apologizes, But Misses the Point (PopEater)
Jun 16th 2010 7:47PM I'd be surprised if this went anywhere! Miley is certainly not 17... more like 19. She got the Disney-fied age shave... just like Adrian Bailon and Raven Symone. If they had it their way, these girls would be playing sweet 16 forever, ala Judy Garland. Now that should be the scandal! BTW... Perez annoys me to no end!

Dixie Carter, Star of 'Designing Women,' Dead at 70 (PopEater)
Apr 12th 2010 9:50AM I may have overlooked it, but where is her TV credit as Orson's scheming mother on 'Desperate Housewives'? I enjoyed seeing her on TV again and her character added much MORE mischief to Wisteria Lane. May she rest in peace and my sincerest condolences to all who personally knew and loved her.
Doctors Induce Labor, Give C-Section to Nonpregnant Woman (AOL Health)
Apr 2nd 2010 6:04AM Anyone with medical insights, please respond:
I think this might be an insurance billing issue. I always felt like the events surrounding the emergency delivery of my twins was contributed to by a "need" to save on performing a sonogram in L&D! I also vaguely remember the nurses hem-hawing about whether there was a unit available on the floor!
I was a high risk pregnancy and had scans every few weeks toward the end of my term. When I was 36 wks with my twins, (doc thought I'd be LUCKY to make 36 wks!) I went in to L&D assessment with classic signs of labor to occur in 24-48 hrs. Add in that my daughter was in the breach position at 33 wk scan, and you'd think that they'd want to admit and watch me for a while.
Instead, I was monitored for an hour and sent home! The only thing they did concerning my daughter's breach position was ASK me if I felt her turn. I said I thought she was trying, but couldn't be sure. My doc was out of town and his partner was in practice, in the very same hospital, a few floors up. He, nor any other doctor came to check her position. I was in such bad pain and all the doc did was 'OK' a sedative over the phone! By the time I made it home, my hubby all but carried me in the house. I made it to the couch and was bolted awake by my water breaking! Made it to the bathroom, and it was like a horror scene! I could also feel a limb in the birth canal! (later found out it was my breach daughter's leg!)
So less than an hour later, I'm back at L&D and getting nasty looks from the same nurses. Guess that all changed when they did a 'hand and glove' and found a lil' foot in there! All hell broke loose and I had an emergency C-section. Thank God my babies were just fine. My little boy pulled through like a champ and my daughter had a rough first few days. Today, both are brilliant, thriving 3 yr olds.
Still, I'll always wonder what performing a sonogram when I first came in, would've meant for me. My daughter's amniotic fluid was so saturated with my blood that she passed it in her stools and spit-ups for a 2 days! Her blood sugar was also deathly low for those days. I can't help but also wonder how close all 3 of us came to death!
When my doctor got in from his vacay, he tried to explain the bleeding as a rupture of cervical vessels from her leg passing through the birth canal. PLEASE, anyone with a specific medical background, can you confirm or deny? I just can't see this leading to my baby girl's system being so saturated with MY blood. (2 days to fully empty her system!) Also, she and I both had serious jaundice.
On top of all this, a muscle in my side was torn while extracting my son, and went untreated AND undiagnosed while I was in the hospital! (Despite my obvious pain and complaining!) Also, my son's member was nicked during circumcision and that procedure was generally botched! (too much skin remaining and skin adhesions that the pediatricians can't manually correct!) He has a visible, indented scar!
So, like many, I also want to know how things like these can happen in this day and age. I live in a major metro area and have 2 hospitals within 5 minutes of me and a leading trauma and surgical center within 10. Being a healer can't be just like any other job that people punch in and out of. Yes, I realize how many years are devoted to the study, but the big payout can't be more important than the calling!
Another note: The same doctor, tried to induce my older son, during HIS delivery. We KNOW he'd just came from the golf course, on a very beautiful North Florida day! My son would arrive, without intervention, LESS than 5 hours later!
Steal These Items From Your Next Hotel (AOL Travel News)
Mar 21st 2010 2:23PM So I suppose it's also "stealing" when you take one of those same mass-produced pens out of the cup at the bank! I'm not talking about the ones that are tethered to the bank form stations. Just the ones that look EXACTLY like the ones you find in your hotel room. The maid may not carry an extra phone or clock radio on her cart, but she DEFINITELY has extra pads and pens. (WHY? Because guest are welcomed and EXPECTED to take them!)
I can't tell you how many times I've used one of the MANY Disney resort pens I have at my house, to fill out checks or just to keep in my purse. It has "DISNEY RESORTS" emblazoned in gold block-type, so frequently the cashier or pen borrower will ask about staying on-site and the cost. I then become "salesperson" and tell the person about ALL the varying priced accommodations and where to find the best FL Resident deals. Pens and stationery like these are sold by their manufacturers as "economical giveaways/advertising" .
Also, it is absolutely not FREE or "NOT YOURS TO TAKE", because you pay for it in the itemized pricing of a night's stay.(Please google it, if in doubt! You are charged per-diem ) Just like the price of condiments is factored into the french fries you buy at a restaurant! You don't get cents-off because you don't want or need the two packs of ketchup! Likewise, you won't get any dollars back for all the days you didn't use their toiletries, gym facilities, or pool. (Many places have an ADDITIONAL resort fee for the daily use of amenities. It can be 8-22+ bucks!)
Now, NONE of these charges gives you the right to out and out loot the room or ransack the maid's cart! I'm just saying, you moral high-horse riders who are harping on taking unused toiletries, might want to harp on the fact of how wasteful you're being with your money by not taking home the things you've OUTRIGHT paid for! You could be giving these items to a women's shelter. My local one asks for them every year, after peak travel season!

White Towson Professor Fired for Using the N-Word (BV Black Spin)
Mar 2nd 2010 7:11PM So sad that you think this one pathetic incident can apply to an entire race. By that coin, if one bad example sets the rule, then every female uses her "assets" to get ahead, every disabled person exploits their disability for sympathy, and every white man has and uses his "good ol' boy" connections!
Users and abusers come in every shade, ethnicity, and social status. I also find it comical that you choose a posting name that epitomizes the perception of the "faceless white mastermind", ie. "the man"!
