Feb 4th 2009 6:53PM You have been mislead and misinformed. The problems faced by the domestic automakers stem from the fact that foreign automakers are subsidized by their governments and in part by our own government. They have been so subsidized for decades. The concepts of fair trade and a level playing field are myths. Elsewhere in the world, working class folk have enjoyed universal health care paid for by their respective governments. This factor ALONE amounts to $1,000.00/month - give or take - for the average wage earner making parts for each auto, assembling each auto, transporting each auto to market...This factor ALONE over the past 30-40 years has rendered domestic automakers UNCOMPETITIVE...However, there are many other factors...Even in the face of patently unfair manufacturing and trade conditions, our good old USA worker OUTPERFORMED his/her counterparts world wide. I think that once the bosses get their heads into the game, we will once again be the leader...the Unions have not been perfect, BUT, they did not cause the problems of the domestic automakers in general or those that showed up in DC asking for taxpayer handouts in private Lear Jets??? Your particular lack of knowledge about how the world automanufacting economy evolved say, since WWII is obvious...your lack of knowledge about the need for more unions and Unionism in this country is even more obvious...If you are willing to learn more, I will be glad to help all I can.
