How to Recycle: My 30 Day Recycling Challenge (Shelterpop)

Apr 18th 2011 3:57AM Same thing happened to my inlaws. For some reason they thought a block of wood was recyclable. The guy picking it up, went to their door, rang the doorbell at 7 in the morning, just to tell her about how its not recyclable. This happened several years ago, so yeah, they havent recycled since.

First Im thinking, why on earth is this guy wasting his time going through peoples recyclables? That would take forever! Second, everything gets dumped in the same recycling truck anyway (thus no reason to pre-sort) so those who weed out non recyclables are not the same people who pick them up. Third, if it is such a problem then clearly residents need to be educated in some way. I know ours wont take type 5 plastics. So naturally I just throw those out. But I found that out on a website, just like "no plastic bags". Otherwise I would just try and recycle it. Then they say no plastic containers whose tops are larger than the bottom. So a clean yogurt cup is recyclable and a strore bought cup isnt? Theyre both type 7 plastics! I still recycle it anyway, since again, who else is going to read their hard to navigate website? So if they came to my door and harassed me about it, I would stop recycling too.

How to Recycle: My 30 Day Recycling Challenge (Shelterpop)

Apr 18th 2011 1:49AM Recycling isnt as difficult as the blogger makes it out to be. I received several reusable bags as an earth day freebie one year. If you keep them in your car, you'll never forget. Since they clutter up the kitchen after use, I make sure to return them to the car as soon as I notice them.

Plastic bags arent that big of a deal to me. Our recycling company doesnt want them because it clogs up the machine they say. So in my trash area I have two bags hung up. One is for bags I plan on reusing, typically for kitty litter. The other, typically a large bag, I use to collect bags I wont use, or other clean plastic wrapping that I know cant be recycled. When that bag is full, I put that in the trunk as well, so I dont forget to recycle it when I grocery shop again (Walmart, Target, and others will recycle these) Since its not a special trip, its not really an effort. Since getting my grocery bags out of the trunk has become a habbit, seeing a large plastic bag full of other bags next to them is an easy reminder to take them with me as well.

I have two recycling bins which I keep in the same area as the plastic bags and trash. Because I plan on throwing this stuff away anyway, its no chore at all to toss it in the recycling bin since everything ends up together in the truck anyway only to be sorted at the plant. As for things that need to be clean, since I prepare stuff next to the sink, its really no trouble to just hose it down and toss it.

CFL Bulbs & batteries - In the same area I keep a small container and dump these thing in. After a year, I have enough to make recycling them worth it. I place them in one of my plastic bags I saved, and take them to one of the many retailers that sells these, as they will recycle them.

AN EXCUSE TO BE LAZY:

Since this actually does require effort, I dont think its such a big deal if people just trash things. The following are...

Scrap metal - I usually make $50-150 on scrap metal. We do a lot of automotive things which result in scrap. Normally I would just throw it out. Instead I collect them in a pile in my back yard. Since the scrap yard is far away, and open during normal business hours, it could be a year or two before I ever make the trip. Since it is a special long distance trip, and since most people dont want to trash up any part of their property, I dont expect people to be eco friendly with this.

E-waste - Many towns do not offer recycling options, and those that do, are strictly for their residents only. And with Best Buy, I think you have to buy a product, and or they'll charge a fee. For towns that offer this, most are events that occur once or twice a year, and are during odd times of the day. Since I dont expect someone to hold onto broken/outdated electronics that they plan on getting rid of for that long, and considering that you have to make a special trip, during a specific inconveient time, and in some cases are also still charged a fee (depending on item) I dont expect people to be that heroic.

Gap Holiday Ad Causes Religious Controversy (Stylelist (Main))

Nov 16th 2009 7:28PM These are probably the very same people that hate it when you wish them a "happy holiday." In fact Ive heard of many people boycotting places like Target and such because people would wish them a happy holiday rather than a merry christmas. They have no idea that non christians may find it offensive that you wish them a merry christmas. No ones ever come up to them and wished them a Happy Hannuka before. They have no idea that the individual truley is refering to xmas when they say holiday. Theyre still being wished a good holiday, and theyre upset about it. So, to those out there that dont want a "happy Holiday" I wish them a sad miserable horribly awful holiday.

Lobbyists Annoyed With New Obama Regulations (Politics Daily)

Oct 6th 2009 12:51PM Just like with unions, lobbying can be a good thing. However just like with unions, if given enough power they can do anything. Think about The Big Three. This isnt the first time theyve been in trouble. There has been numerous times when they would have failed. Did the government ever do anything about all those other american car manufacturers when they were in trouble? No! Why? The Big Three either bought them, or they went under. And many of these manufacturers were making cars that were decades from their time. Just watch Tucker, A Man and His Dream, and you'll understand.

Exclusive: The sad story of a fallen millionaire...his full story of losing it all (WalletPop)

Oct 6th 2009 12:38PM I'd hafta agree. Youre only worth what you DONT owe the bank. Im sick and tired of hearing about celebrities and the super rich losing all this. It just tells me that despite their fame and lifestyle, Im richer then they are. It doesnt matter how many summer mansions you have if you dont really own any of them. I can understand having a house payment. But the bulk of this financial mess were people from every social class buying things when they still are in debt. I see my mortgage as debt... ...because thats what it is.

You have good honest people losing their homes, even when they pay their bills every month. Why? Because youve got Joe Schmo investor who said "me too" getting loans for things like houses, even though he already has a home and several cars hes currently making payments on. So he takes the rent money to keep his stuff while his "investments" get foreclosed on.

How many bankruptcies has Donald Trumph had? All hes doing is investing other peoples money. If he fails, its not his money its yours and mine. This is exactly what happened in the great depression, only with real estate instead of stock. All these investors seem to forget that there is a risk involved. If there wasnt, a lot more people would do it. Its no different then playing the lottery.

When the uber rich lose, it hurts us the most. Imagine a $50 million home that got foreclosed on. The bank could take 50% off and it still wouldnt sell. Why? because the select few who could afford it arent in the market, or dont want to move to that location, or, heck, want to build their own. Thats $50 million the bank lost, that these rich people never have to pay back since they filed for bankruptcy. But thats ok. The bank wont fail, its FDIC insured, plus its getting bailouts and can charge fees, and raise rates. Guess where all that money comes from. Once again this punishes people like us, who are seen as cheapskates and tightwads, when really we're just being responsible.

Crime-Fighting Senior Citizen Runs Off Robbers (Asylum)

Sep 23rd 2009 2:55PM Pretty cool. Whats even sadder is what may have been in the safe? Marriage, birth, death certificate, social security papers, will, etc. Things important, but valueless to the thieves... ...I do wonder how they knew where the safe was.

Obama's Real-Person Health Care Story Not That Real (Politics Daily)

Sep 18th 2009 3:23PM So that guy lived... ...he COULD have died, and its very possible, and most likely that many others have die with a very similar story. I remember once having an injury that was unavoidable. My insurance was already high due to a preexisting condition... ...that condition was that I was female. Yes, because I was a female in my 20s, my insurance was high because they assumed that I would become a baby factory despite still not having children. Anyway, what happened was I fell, had a deep laceration and shattered teeth. On the phone, and in the letter they said we were covered, yet they always denied every claim. I was still in college working part time. I went from a credit card with a zero balance to maxed out. Eventually I got them to pay for the majority, but all the interests was still too much to pay the card off until after I graduated and was able to get a full time job.

Technically I could have died too... ...over something so stupid! How? I weighed 100lbs and for months couldnt eat anything solid. Most of what I ate was soup. Had I not gone ahead and paid for my own health care through credit, I could have died of malnutrition. BTW, thats what credit cards are for... ...expenses that are necessary, have to be spent, but you cant afford. Its a loan that need to be paid back in full. If I had anything else on my balance, there would have been no way I could have the surgery.

Are you a sucker for shopping at outlet malls? (WalletPop)

Sep 17th 2009 5:53PM "Shouldn't I being seeing better at the outlet?" The writer should proof read before submitting.

And the thing about outlet stores is most tend to sell normal fresh items in addition to discounted merchandise. Those that only sell discounted merchandise tend not to survive. I remember one that always sold broken items, holiday, or items they clearly would never sell. They always go under. However stores that sell normal merchandise and survive usually have discounted merchandise located elsewhere in the store like Target and Walmart does. The same nike store that sells $150 shoes may also sell $20 shoe. I know, because Ive never paid more than $30 for a pair of shoes ever.

Just because its an outlet store doesnt mean everythings going to be 75% off... ..you just have to keep you eyes open. After all, most of the stuff I buy at 90% off, yes 90, arent at discount malls

Hell freezes over: McDavid defeats McGoliath in a Malaysian court (Daily Finance)

Sep 16th 2009 3:12PM Theres a McDonalds in Texas that has no golden arches. It sells BBQ. I dont see how KY's Norman McDonalds is infringing, is it because it serves hamburgers? Its a drive In, not a drive thru. McDonalds is a name. Its like if Joe the Plumber started suing everyone named Joe. You cant trademark a last name. You can however TM a symbol or slogan. And adding "Mc" to something is no different than adding "i" or "e" to words.

Coke CEO attacks soda tax as a Commie tactic (Daily Finance)

Sep 16th 2009 3:04PM I already pay taxes on soft drinks and other food... ...its called SALES TAX. All your doing is raising the price even more. I dont have to pay taxes on drugs, and Coke was once marketed as a drug.
