More from the police blotter: Sagemore Apple Store hit by burglars (TUAW.com)

Sep 11th 2009 3:59PM It's probably not really worth their time or money to track them down, other than to get the thieves. They have insurance and will just get 23+ new laptops.

My favorite quotations from the reporter: "[the thieves] show skilled practice at the art of bringing down a plate glass door" and "Like pros they bring it shattering down with one strike". I believe a well-placed brick is all it takes to bring down a plate glass door. Can we hype this up any more, or perhaps fit in one more cliché? "picked the place clean like there's no tomorrow."

More People Are Watching TV and Movies on the Web, Study Shows (Switched)

Jun 14th 2009 3:45PM Yes, I have watched a movie and an episode of a TV show on my computer, bit I prefer old fashioned TV (time shifted via TiVo) and yes, I am considering abandoning cable for a larger program selection, but I would abandon cable for satellite. These would put me into the 50% cited in the article but the article does not state these people are watching TV via computer exclusively. And in have never downloaded a movie or show via peer to peer, I tried it but it seemed like too much of a hassle. Can we get a clarification of what the questions were on this study?

Cartier kerfuffle bags bogus bangles (TUAW.com)

May 25th 2009 6:29PM Seems silly at first, but if the app copied Cartier's design, it could be infringement. Good idea for a cute app. Just redesign it. Wish I could see it.

TUAW Wishlist: iPhone apps I'd like to see (TUAW.com)

May 19th 2009 10:45AM I just got an iPod Touch, but I totally agree with a WiFi on/off app on the home screen. When I am out, I rarely am around a hot spot so it would save battery to turn off WiFi with a single click, rather than the 3 it takes now. (and sometimes my connection gets messed up at home and I need to turn off/on WiFi to get it to reconnect).

Maybe click and hold the WiFi icon at the top of the home screen for a dialog screen and to see the settings (DHCP address, etc.)

Also shortcuts for entering commonly-used words/phrases.
How many times do i need to enter TheBig.Kahuna4@america.internetAccessService.net per day?

Trend: Company-specific apps and ads (TUAW.com)

May 19th 2009 8:35AM I'd love to see a TiVo app that actually interacts with my broadband-connected TiVo (or even thru my home network via my WiFi router). Search, schedule shows, mark shows for conversion to iTunes so next time I sync, they are there, delete recordings, change season passes, etc. The iPhone would provide a much richer interface for the TiVo, especially for searching, etc.
Yes, TiVo has a web app for searching shows, but how about something to interact with my TiVo.

The Pilgrims: Okay with Gay Marriage? (News Bloggers)

Dec 3rd 2008 10:35AM Yes. Marriage is a civil act. That's why you need to get a marriage license from your local government. That's why you can get married in a court house, officiated by a government official, rather than a church. That's why the preacher says (or used to say): "By the powers invested in me by the state of...".
If your church/temple/mosque/drum circle/etc. doesn't believe in same-sex marriages, they are under no obligation to perform the ceremony. For example, some churches will only perform ceremonies for members, some pastor/priests/rabbis will only perform ceremonies for two people of the same faith, some will not perform ceremonies for divorced people. (Compare: abortion is legal, but no one can force a doctor to perform an abortion if she/he is opposed to it.)
Marriage, as a legal term, does not equal a civil union.

The Palin Family: They're Just Like Us! (News Bloggers)

Sep 2nd 2008 11:26AM The schadenfreude comes when secrets of the high-and-mighty republicans (which I used to be) come out (figuratively and literally). Everyone expects the democrats to be adulterous and amoral libertines, so no eyebrows are raised when one has an affair. But when the abstinence-only republican (how's that working for you?) has an illegitimate grandchild or the homophobe gets caught with his pants down, it really shows the weaknesses of their ideals.

New get a Mac ad: Off the Air (TUAW.com)

Aug 21st 2008 11:34AM I think this ad is slightly more funny than the pizza box ad--and this one shows a benefit.

Enough with you gamers! If you are a gamer, get a PC and shut up already about PC being a better game platform!

The majority of users, in my opinion, are average people who will never upgrade their keyboard, much less their video card or hard drive or load Linux.

I used to be of the opinion that 'average' user should get a PC, because it is cheaper, and they will use it for internet and e-mail (and maybe Quicken) and most average programs are for the PC. But the frustration my mom recently had with my dad's PC (anti-virus popping up to scan the HD every so often with cryptic messages, interrupting her, etc.) made her demand a MacBook.

I helped them set up her MacBook and they seem to like it. I do wish Apple really thought a *little* more about new user, cause some features in 10.5 (e.g. stacks) might cause some confusion.
