A Net Neutrality Cheat Sheet: What It Is, and Why You Should Care (Switched)

Sep 3rd 2010 1:37PM You missed the historic beginnings of Net Neutrality, like in 2005 when AT&T (formerly SBC) CEO decided Google should not have free use of his pipes.

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/69002

Ed Whitacre argues that he wants to make portals like Yahoo & Google pay to use SBC's network. "Now what they would like to do is use my pipes free, but I ain't going to let them do that because we have spent this capital and we have to have a return on it," says Whitacre. "So there's going to have to be some mechanism for these people who use these pipes to pay for the portion they're using. Why should they be allowed to use my pipes?"

Also, outside the US, like in Canada , carriers have discriminated
performance and access based on content. I believe a carrier in British Columbia is often cited for anti-net-neutrality abuse.

Are the Health Hazards of Cell Phones Being Covered Up? (Switched)

Feb 9th 2010 8:23PM
What if you wrapped your head with a band of wire with two coils positioned near your temples? Then pump modulated magnetic signals into the two coils.
Seems like headphones with wires less than a few hairs away from your skull
have a huge multiplier factor by virtue of the inverse square law. The electromagnetic effect increasing by the square the closer all that wire
gets to your brain.

How about those wires from electrified overhead train systems. That's a huge amount of power radiating out a few feet above you at the train station. You think that's got an impact above your cell phones power?

You got an electric blanket? heating pad? car seat warmers? microwave?

Scary all this electricity leaking out all over. How could one ever develop a cause and effect with all the other similar and in some cases more powerful electromagnetic sources resonating at multiple frequencies across the spectrum.

Nov 10th 2009 8:28AM I recall Alton Brown in his Food Network Good Eats program saying rice is not a good desiccant. That is rice does not absorb excess water like a salt. The effect in salt shakers being an to break up clumps of salt not to absorb any water.

'2001' Geeks, Rejoice! World Learns Why HAL Sang 'Daisy' (Switched)

Nov 4th 2009 6:24PM I believe if you go back further in Bell System history you will
find the choice for Daisy at Bell labs was in tribute to Alexander
Graham Bell's marketing ploy to sell the earliest telephones. Audio quality
in the early telephones was not good, but, by demonstrating them by
singing a song that everyone knew the lyrics (Daisy), meant the
potential customer would fill in the garbled parts and another
happy customer was signed up. I believe they were sold in pairs
so that you would have at least someone you knew to call.
