89-year-old woman arrested for keeping a kid's football thrown on her lawn {WalletPop}

Oct 22nd 2008 1:16PM This is a tough one. On the one hand, someone who would call the police for a petty issue such as keeping a football might be a squeaky-wheel jerk who always wants to get his way in life. After all, the kid threw it onto her property -- maybe the kid is a wise goofball. On the other hand, maybe this grandmother is someone who always wants to get her way. She should have just signed the citation and be done with it (the police, however, should have figured something out that would have precluded an arrest).

Without knowing any of the details and mitigating circumstances, I'll have to side with the grandmother. First, it's her property. Second, the post mentioned that this was an affluent neighborhood. If that's true, I have to assume the father is a rich guy. Honestly, I don't think I'd call the police over $15 if I were rich. Life is too short and precious to get in that type of hassle. Since he doesn't want to press charges, I'd have to assume the grandmother isn't some sort of ogre (if I were dealing with a true ogre who wasn't mentally ill, then I would have pressed charges, old lady or not).

That's the best I can make of this...

How to deal with a check-splitting deadbeat {WalletPop}

Oct 17th 2008 6:46PM
I have this exact problem! I hate paying more than what I am supposed to. In fact, to the person who talked about leaving a higher tip for the server, and then getting screwed because of it, that has happened to me several times.

On more than one occasion, I have gone back to leave more money for the server because when I was with the group they ended up leaving a lousy tip. I wait till they leave, then go back in myself.

And then I have a friend who is a jerk when it comes to tips. One day at Hooters, the bill came out to $20.45, something like that (now, think about what you would have left for a tip). His meal was a bit more expensive. I put $20 down on the table. He said "So, you want to leave $20? Fine." Then he pulled out a $5 bill. We left $25 total. Personally, I thought that was a cheap tip, even though it is technically within the percentage guideline (especially for a girl in hot pants!). But he didn't care. He literally offered no more. As far as I am concerned, if I want to tip well, that's my choice. He should still know what he needs to pay for the meal and then tip accordingly. What I put down on the table for my meal should not affect his monetary obligation.

Here's a question: I've never requested a separate check, but do people find it rude if one member requests a separate check?

Great topic, thanks for the post...

Swedish magazine typo causes four to be poisoned {Slashfood}

Sep 3rd 2008 3:31PM I have to be honest -- I wouldn't have questioned the amount, and I would have followed the recipe. True, it might be a stupid thing to do, but I guess I am ignorant when it comes to cooking and following recipes.

Next 2D Castlevania could crack whip on WiiWare {Joystiq}

Jul 24th 2008 11:38PM J. Howlett:

Yes, "Simon's Quest" is the second Castlevania. I still own the cartridge for my NES. Like you, I have extremely fond memories of it. I loved the adventure, traveling through the various castle scenes to get the bone fragments (I recall the dead bodies, or whatever they were, hanging from chains in the background), having to kneel before a structure to summon a dervish to take me somewhere, the day turning to night, resting in the church, etc. I really want to play this again!

Next 2D Castlevania could crack whip on WiiWare {Joystiq}

Jul 24th 2008 7:25PM I love the idea of a retro Castlevania. My favorite entry, however, is "Simon's Quest", and I would love to see another Castlevania title like this one.

Firework Haters Out in Force {News Bloggers}

Jul 4th 2008 9:57PM Sorry, Ada, have to disagree with you on this one. As I write this, fireworks are going off in my neighborhood, and I hate them. People are nuts to put themselves at risk by using them. And I would have to think that there is a legitimate environmental impact, although the danger issue is more pressing, I concede. It's too bad the police don't care.

Worst Movie-Based Games Ever {Switched.com}

Jul 4th 2008 1:43AM Evan, thanks so much for bringing this subject up. The games mentioned here bring back a lot of memories. I own "Total Recall" for the NES and, believe it or not, I own "E.T." for the 2600! I actually like the latter.

Complain to get free food! {WalletPop}

Jul 3rd 2008 12:11AM I will try this the next time I honestly have bad service. I always assumed it would be too difficult to find the proper email to address a complaint. I wonder how many people complain just for the sake of getting something free, even if nothing actually happened...

Teen Girls Made Pregnancy Pact {News Bloggers}

Jun 23rd 2008 12:06AM I'm not really sure I buy the "pact" thing. Something tells me this borders on urban-legend-in-the-making.

Whatever the reason for the high pregnancy rates, I doubt it had to do with such an agreement. But that's just my opinion, maybe I'm wrong.

Pitfall Wii-vived for 'The Big Adventure' {Joystiq}

May 12th 2008 8:13PM I fully agree with Shadow El -- I loved "Lost Expedition." I played it on Gamecube, and had a wonderful summer with it. The only problem with the game was the confusing layout of the worlds (and that awful, awful hard part where you were turned into a scorpion. But I have to ask as well -- is this new Wii game merely a port, or is completely brand new? Sounds from the description to be exactly the same as "Expedition", and Edge of Reality did develop that one. By the way, I also completed "Lost Expedition" for GBA -- the part where Harry was on a pogo stick is literally the hardest level I have ever played on a video game. I had a gaming-expert friend of mine complete it for me, and I treated him to TGIF as payment...
