Facebook-'Dipping' Teens Using Web 2.0 to Find Secret Pool Parties (Switched)
Jun 26th 2008 4:15PM EXCEPT IN TEXAS--where as far as I know, you can still protect properly-marked property with lethal force. As for the rest of the country--CATCH ON!!

Jun 26th 2008 3:51PM PHILMA--read more carefully!! I was not aware that a gun was being (allegedly) used until AFTER the incident (remember, I never SAW the gun or let me clarify--heard the existence of it implied--"I'm going to blow your brains out", that kind of thing.) Also, these kids saw me come out of my building, so if the cops are called, they know EXACTLY where to go to get revenge. Thirdly, I live in a rough neighborhood (lack of funds for any idiots who want to question WHY) and it's not at all unusual to see people conducting various types of business on the street here--anything from collecting a debt to more specifically collecting child support (there were two girls involved, remember?) to collecting a drug debt or a debt for "services rendered" (again, remember, two girls involved.) Actually, I thought they were either collecting a debt or more specifically money for child support until the guy claimed otherwise after they left. So, be careful before you judge!

Facebook-'Dipping' Teens Using Web 2.0 to Find Secret Pool Parties (Switched)
Jun 26th 2008 2:50PM First, hardly anyone is polite enough anymore to clean up after themselves. Hell, I just saw an armed robbery in broad daylight almost in front of my house yesterday. Group of four young kids spent about 20 minutes trying to get the max amount of cash out of a middle-aged man in a car. Two girls and two guys..one of the girls even had the audacity to flirt with me a little bit as this was going on (until the motorist told me later, I was not aware that there was a gun. Actually, didn't SEE the gun--was told by the motorist afterward that there was one) My second observation is that, yes, this is just a further development on an old phenomenon; in the '70s we here in the Lou called them 'open parties' or 'hippie parties'. You could have upward of 100 or 200 people at these affairs. Amazingly enough, my experience was that they generally went off without a hitch, or at least without violence. Sometimes they would even have a band. However, the property-owners (or at least the KIDS of the property-owners--smile!!) would know about these things. My thought also when I heard of the bicycle idea was that a bicycle can't outrun shotgun shrapnel. Of course, this was in jolly old Britain, where it's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) that people can basically only own a one-shot rifle (or maybe shotgun) for hunting. Even here in the states (except for Texas) we can't protect property by shooting someone, unfortunately.
High school girls make pregnancy pact (ParentDish)
Jun 21st 2008 4:02PM The answers to what causes this are so obvious and yet totally not what people on EITHER side of the socio-political spectrum and most people who comment on AOL blogs want to hear:
1. NO DADDY IN THE HOME (the one commenter writes of "proud grandmas". Where's Grandpa?? Lemme guess. . . . In many cases I'm sure driven out of the home by a mama who didn't see daddy as necessary either!) Either that or Dad is so emasculated by Mom's constant hectoring the moment he tries to do anything resembling DISCIPLINE that he's given up in frustration. I experienced that myself and while I realize that dads can be the permissivists also I think it's far less common.
2. Children who are receiving a heavy message from both their mothers and the media that fathers (NOT SPERM DONORS) are an OPTION, not a NECESSITY.
3. Children who are receiving a heavy message from both society and one or the other (or both) parent(s) that parental authority (or the OTHER parent's authority...usually DAD'S) is open to question.
I am not proposing that day care for the kids be shut down. If the taxpayers who support that district want it, it should be there. Nor am I supporting making life unnecessarily rough on these CHILDREN (the teen parents OR their offspring). I note that every story I've seen on this DOESN'T EVEN MENTION THE "FATHERS". It's as if they are non-entities. I believe that we should support our children but that does NOT mean shielding them totally from the consequences of their actions.
An ongoing joke between my now-23-year-old (and unmarried) daughter since she was about 14 has been that she had a 'secret' to tell me. I would lean over and put my ear to her mouth and she would whisper "I'm pregnant!". We went through this so many times in front of her friends that I can't count them. One time her mother asked what she said and was told. She responded quite seriously that my daughter shouldn't count on her as a babysitter...that she was through raising kids. I couldn't believe my ears! I reminded her that any such child would be her grandchild. She replied that she didn't care. I then told our daughter that while she could not necessarily count on me as a regular babysitter, I would be happy to watch the child at times and she could count on the occasional night with Grandpa as a babysitter if she wanted to, say, go out with friends if she was doing her share (working, attempting to pull as much of her own weight as she could and otherwise behaving responsibly). We still occasionally go through that joke.
Soros calls financial crisis worst since Great Depression, sees more market declines (BloggingStocks)
Apr 4th 2008 2:27PM George Soros is an import from behind the Iron Curtain (remember that?) who made his millions here in the states at least partly under the 'laissez-faire' policies (and laissez-faire is a TERM. There IS no such school of economic thought) of Pres. Reagan..and yes, many of Reagan's policies WERE laissez-faire. George Soros is the biggest contributor the Democratic party has. Could this be just a BIT biased? Could there be a political agenda here? NAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya THINK????????!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Walton, Shaq Exchange Slaps (Fanhouse NBA Blog)
Feb 13th 2008 2:44AM Bill Walton--never heard of him???? Boy, are you showing your age..and your lack of knowledge of history!! Get some larnin', Boy! I'm sure you can spell Walton's name well enough to look him up here on the web. Can you?? Huh??!!!
Did Terry Bradshaw Say the F-Word During Fox Super Bowl Broadcast? (Fanhouse NFL Blog)
Feb 5th 2008 10:08AM I used to be a broadcaster..and trust me, if I was the director or producer and heard that, I'd be ready to get 'the phone call' from the boss! I used to be able to hear things on a magnetic tape that others couldn't hear (like whether a tape was the original, first-generation copy, second-generation copy, etc.) I think America needs to get over its' uptight attitude on these things somewhat, but he dropped the f-word..IN PRIME TIME, which means that he had every right to expect that children were watching. Doesn't need to be fired, but needs to be taken to the woodshed for sure.

Stylefoul: Avril Lavigne's New Year's Eve getup (Stylelist)
Jan 6th 2008 6:43PM First, I think it's kind of cute, though the eye make-up makes her look a little trashy. It's definitely a softer look than what she usually wears. I've seen about enough of the Granny's boondockers, torn-this, spiked everything (and I DO mean EVERYTHING!!), in-a-permanent-bad-mood, just-got-run-over-by-a-tractor-and-I'm-so-damned-hard-the-tractor-got-the-worst-of-it look worn by most of the teenage girls of the '90s. Though she still looks more-than-a-bit hard (or like she's trying to LOOK hard), it's nice to see a pretty girl in something that makes her LOOK pretty instead of something which tries to hide it. Also, for the idiots who are trying to get something MEANINGFUL out of this, remember, IT WAS NEW YEAR'S EVE!! Get a life!!
