SmackDown: Should Women Have Home Births? (ParentDish)
Mar 9th 2011 5:44PM Dr. Amy,
Would you kindly post references to ALL the scientific evidence that shows that homebirths lead to higher mortality? Because the vast majority of my reading and the opinion of my GYN, who runs a birth center and shares space with a homebirth midwife, shows the opposite.
Just on a VERY brief search, I found this
"Coincidentally, the same day, I receive in my inbox a notification of a newly released study out of Ontario, Canada published in the most recent issue of Birth journal. The study examines the outcomes associated with planned home-birth compared to planned hospital birth, facilitated by midwives, in Ontario over a three-year period (from 2003-2006). The authors find that, in fact, there is no difference between planned home and hospital birth when comparing perinatal and neonatal mortality rates (or maternal mortality rates, either). " (oops, guess not ALL the science vilifies homebirth....gotta watch those absolutes!)
this was from rhrealitycheck blog. i can't post the link here, but i bet you can find it.
I chose homebirth for my first and only child for many of the same reasons as Denise (minus, of course, negative prior hospital birth experiences)...I wanted it to be peaceful and quiet and involve people I chose and trusted to attend me and follow my wishes to the fullest extent possible. I did not fear childbirth and I trusted my body to do what it was made to do. And it did, remarkably.
That said, if you are truly more comfortable with the readily available interventions of the hospital setting and you are making your choice with the best interests of yourself and your baby truly in mind, I say God Bless and I wish you the best. After all, the end goal is a healthy baby. I just hope there's no MRSA or flu-carriers among the many caregivers by whom your baby will be handled....
'Idol' Breaks Down on TV (AOL Video Blog)
Nov 15th 2007 3:01PM yes, and i'm sure that it was staged that her little brother was crying too. i cry hearing this song, and it's not even remotely about me. how sad for the cynical writer of this piece that he/she can't understand deep feelings and has to doubt the sincerity.
'Guitar Hero III' Rocks Out to $115 Million Launch (Switched)
Nov 8th 2007 11:16AM We have all 4 of the GH games--GH III is harder than the others, but has awesome songs (we got it the day after it was released). We'd buy Rock Band when it came out, too...if they released it for PS2, but I hear they won't. So, until we're ready to pony up $300-400 for PS3 or 360, I guess we'll miss out..
BTW--"we" is our family of 5--2 parents, 2 teens and a 7 year old..and we ALL love the game!
Help! Crocs have Taken Over Disney! (Stylelist)
Jun 24th 2007 9:01PM I just don't get them...I tried on a pair and they made my feet sweat almost INSTANTLY. What kind of fashion statement is that??
That said: 1. Who the heck cares what anyone else wants to wear on their feet? I think it's idiotic to wear pointy-toed FMP's that either squeeze your toes or make your feet look bigger, but if someone wants to wear them, it's their feet (and that's what Stacey and Clinton recommend--love the show...still hate the shoes!)
2. I don't think jerseygirl gets out much if she doesn't know anyone who has them....unless it's just that they're epidemic here in Florida!
Justin Timberlake: 'I Am Tiger Woods ... but Better Looking' (Fanhouse Golf Blog)
Apr 25th 2007 5:55PM Linda and Eyes: I'm with you. I'd bet that the majority of REAL women (the ones with $$ to spend!) prefer the voice of Taylor, and the looks of either George or Tiger over Mr. Girly Voice....and the class of ANY one of them overshadows him without even trying!
Romp & Circumstance: Miss America Is Alive and Well in Las Vegas (Vegas Popular Blog)
Jan 27th 2007 10:19PM Jon- I'm curious on what you're basing your opinion? Miss America is a scholarship pageant with a rigid moral code. It requires talent, and an intelligent interview before a panel of judges (that you don't see on TV and that shows the judges how fit you are for the real world), as well as beauty. It also requires a signed contract attesting to your moral fitness to serve as Miss America (granted, you could lie, but they often find out--then that contestant is disqualified, usually well before the national level.) Winning is FAR from "the end of the line"--the scholarships aside, the winner can and often does find MANY MANY doors opened to her. Leanza Cornett has gone on to a successful career in journalism, Heather Whitfield brought a great deal of attention to the hearing-disabled community...even Vanessa Williams, who was dethroned on a moral issue, has had a successful career in music and film/TV.
*I* know this from both watching the pageant (and the news) over the years, as well as experience, having competed in a local preliminary as a teenager, and having seen 2 contestants disqualified for having falsified items on their application or contract.
Smoke-Free Hotel Rooms (Gadling)
Oct 27th 2006 8:33AM I'm amazed at the number of smokers who insist they have a "right" to pollute the air the rest of us have to breathe, especially when their pollution lasts long after they're gone! It's not just a "feeling" of non-smokers that second-hand smoke and the chemicals left behind by smoking are deadly, it is a SCIENTIFIC FACT. Your rights END when they interfere with mine, especially my right to LIFE!
I hope more hotel chains go non-smoking--even walking down the hallway past smoking rooms causes me to gag. No, I don't like moldy, non-smoking rooms smells, either--but that's not usually an issue in a decent hotel.
Is Wal-Mart trying to act more 'responsibly'? (BloggingStocks)
Jun 26th 2006 10:25PM I was hoping there would be some mention of paying a living wage and providing reasonable health insurance...and eliminating policies that blackmail their suppliers. Oh, well, I guess their idea of social responsibility is different than mine. I guess their employees can keep living off the assistance programs Wal-Mart "supports".
