Apr 22nd 2010 12:56PM From old geek to old guy: when your friend wiped your XP Home he also wiped your sound card driver. You can go to the manufacturer's driver support to download the chipset drivers, which include motherboard audio drivers or if it is a separate sound card the driver for that card. Codecs are not the same as a driver and that is why you "have no sound device" while still seeing codecs.
The Windows Update sometimes will find an audio driver update but not until the sound device is recognized by the computer. Go to Control Panel>Device Manager and check for exclamation marks next to the device listings.

Mar 21st 2010 11:44PM As a US Navy submarine veteran with 20 years of defense contract experience in digital hardware and networking I was appalled to have learned that my security clearance would be not granted for a new job. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) says that they have no access to my prior Secret and Top Secret investigations. It follows suit that my Navy Expeditionary medal and Cold War operations mean zip. I was not even dignified with a reason though I suspect it would be financial hardships that I have suffered in recent years that make me prone to selling out America. Insulting end to a career.
