The Word 'Retard': Stop Using It (ParentDish)

Mar 4th 2011 3:12PM "Retarded" was used as a more humane word than, "moron" or "stupid." But euphemisms tend to work their way into the language as cruel insults. So now it's used as an insult.

So we will invent a new word or phrase that we think is more humane and not degrading.. The article suggests, "cognitivly disabled" or something. If that phrase comes in to general use, it too will eventually be used as a joke and an insult.

The problem, dear Horatio, is not in the word, but in ourselves.

Asbury Park Says No to Topless, Protest Planned (AOL Travel News)

Jul 19th 2010 12:39AM Go to Canada. Women there won the right to go topless many years ago. The courts ruled that laws that allowed men to go topless, but not women, was discriminatory.

The Doggie Diaries - Should We Be Using a Dog Crate? (Pawnation OLD)

Jul 11th 2010 9:06AM I am dogless at the moment so I envy you !

When I was a kid my parents never crated our dog.

But as an adult, after I saw some knowledgable dog owners train their dogs to love the crate, I have trained every dog I've had since then to become accustomed to the crate.

For one thing, it is the fastest and smartest and best way to housetrain a puppy. I have had puppies that never (OK almost hardly ever) had an in-house accident. You confine the pup to the crate when you don't have your eye on them. They won't mess where they have to lie down, so you block off a large crate so the pup only has room to lie down. You only let a pup out when you can stay with them every moment. When they start to get "on the sniff'" (looking for a place to do it) you scoop them up and take 'em outside. No muss, no fuss, no recriminations, no swatting with a newspaper. They catch on in a few days.

Just because a dog has a crate you don't have to confine it. You can leave the crate gate open. But there are times when you have to be able to confine your dog, like when you have visitors that don't like dogs. So it's great if you have trained your dog to not mind being in the crate.

Dick Cheney Returns: Will He Help the GOP? (Politics Daily)

Apr 26th 2010 10:05AM I love Dick Cheney and pray for his health and pray that he stays in the public eye.

As a dedicated supporter of the Democratic party, I believe that every time Dick Cheney appears on a TV interview, thousands of people realize they need to support the Democratic party.

This man is the embodiment of everything that was wrong with our foreign policy during the George W. Bush administration. Even President Bush eventually realized he had been led down the wrong path by the power-hungry neocon war profiteers, epitomized by Dick Cheney.

Unfortunately, the Republicans are smart enough to realize that Dick Cheney is a huge political liability and are most likely telling him to shut up. Fortunately, he can't help himself.

Rock on, Dick Cheney.

An 'Incredible Future' Ends Needlessly (Fanhouse - Kevin Blackistone)

Apr 5th 2010 1:46PM Young people should be allowed to consume alcohol if under supervision by their parents or guardians. Then they could learn how to use it more responsibly. Instead they sneak it, too often with disasterous results.

If minors were allowed to consume alcohol under the supervision of their parents, there would probably be a lot more family parties, as well!

AMC cracks down on movie snack-smugglers (WalletPop)

Dec 8th 2009 9:02AM I make no apolgies for sneaking in my own popcorn.

Whatever it is they put on popcorn instead of butter these days, is disgusting. At $4.75 or more for a few cents worth of pocorn, you would think they could spring for 25 cents worth of butter. But no, their disrespect for what we put in our mouths is unlimited.

GM to shut down Saturn brand (Daily Finance)

Oct 1st 2009 12:24AM I've lived in the Detroit area all my life and I never understood the carmakers.

Why does GM only want to manufacture for Penske for only 2 years? Why doesn't GM simply agree to continue manufacturing for Penske's Saturn for as long as he wants GM to build cars for his Saturn nameplate?

Will someone riddle me that?

Backlash over light bulb ban continues to build in Europe (Daily Finance)

Sep 14th 2009 10:53AM I have a few of the compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in my home.

In some places, they are OK, but I still have not found a CFL that effectively replaces a 100 watt incandescent bulb.

The color they give off is ghastly, and manufacturers have not standardized on terminology of their colors. So you don't really know what you are buying until you light it up.

The CFLs that supposedly give off the same amount of lumens as a 100 watt bulb, do not.

Until the technology improves, I'm not ready to give up my incandescent bulbs.

Oudin-Serena Final Would Be Love American Style (Fanhouse Tennis)

Sep 9th 2009 1:44AM Melanie Oudin is suddenly in the news because she has suddenly appeared near the summit of women's tennis.

We love Cinderella stories, we love watching a new star being born, and it happens in tennis every few years. It's wonderful and exciting.

We love to root for the new upstart.

That's all there is to it.

Muslim Model to Be Caned for Drinking Beer (Slashfood)

Aug 20th 2009 12:24AM We, who live in freedom, will never comprehend societies that live under authoritarianism.

This woman lives in a society where she is told from birth what her religion is, and she can never change her religion (or she would be guilty of the crime of "apostasy").

She can never be a free person as long as she remains in that society. We weep for her and all who wish for freedom and do not have it.
