Why I'm staying with AT&T (TUAW.com)

Jan 11th 2011 2:57PM Strange, I was told my early termination fee went down $25/month when I got my iPhone 4 a few months ago. Probably because I have a nearly maxed out plan with AT&T instead of one of the lesser plans.

Why Verizon needs a copy editor (TUAW.com)

Jan 11th 2011 1:01PM Or better yet, a Verizon ad with a guy punching himself changing his voice like 2 people fighting saying how much he hates himself because he now has an iPhone.

Sears selling a series of 'iWork' toolkits and tool sets (TUAW.com)

Dec 29th 2010 1:08PM 1) Just a couple of years ago. Apple has been in almost constant issues with Apple Records on an off for its whole existence. Probably things finally got 100% completely settled with the Beatles catalog in the iTunes store.
2) Still didn't stop Apple from using it first, and paying for it second.
3) If I recall there definitely was a company in EU that had the iPad trademark, and Apple did make proper arrangements to acquire it.
4) Yes, it was a work in progress, but I recall seeing initial product info with iTV, which quickly changed to Apple TV.

My point being, Apple, and many other companies, intentionally do what they want and then wait for the legal challenges and settle in court rather than try to properly acquire the rights ahead of time. If there is no challenge, they save a grip of cash!

Please don't mistake my post as Apple bashing, just my observations. I have owned dozens of Macs since day 1, bought my first 1984 Macintosh 128K and Imagewriter printer when it was first available. I still have a Mac 512K. And currently own iPods, iPhone 4 and iPad.

But Apple isn't 100% w/o "issues" and can be heavy handed in pursuing its goals at the expense of others at times.

Sears selling a series of 'iWork' toolkits and tool sets (TUAW.com)

Dec 29th 2010 12:16PM Wow... can't believe the article is taking this tone on how Sears *gasp* is infringing on Apple's trademark.

Considering Apple has had NO problems
1) Using the Apple name/brand when the Beatles had it.
2) Using iPhone when Cisco CLEARLY had it first AND it was a PHONE!
3) Using iPad when a company in Europe had it first, we all thought it was going to be called iTablet and not after some feminine hygiene product.
4) Using iTV when someone else had it first, in this case Apple lost and changed to Apple TV.

Also, trademark names can coexist if the industries they exist in are sufficiently different. Apple could use "Apple" because they made computers and did not produce "music".. It is when Apple Computers starting marketing/selling/producing music that Apple Records reopened the lawsuit.

Unless Apple can get a blanket trademark that prohibits anyone at all from prepending an "i" to the front of a normal word, there ARE and always will be many other "i" named products/devices etc that have nothing to do with computers, phones, or music.

Woz flashes fake white iPhone 4 on CNN (TUAW.com)

Dec 9th 2010 1:19PM Uhhh.. the white iPhone wasn't a "fake" as in cheap Chinese knockoff.. it just wasn't an Apple produced one, even though all the components were Apple made.

Dutch designer creates wind-powered iFan case-charger for iPhone (TUAW.com)

Dec 6th 2010 1:27PM What would be more effective and probably MUCH faster would be a small handcrank generator. Like the ones they have on the emergency radios that don't need batteries.

Wait for it....

That way you can make crank calls!

Da dum bum...
Please remember to tip your waitstaff..

P.S. But seriously a small handcrank generator could easily be used for a number of devices in same manner.

Multitasking on your iPad: a quick guide (TUAW.com)

Nov 24th 2010 5:03PM Something very interesting I found out. While doing complete iPad restores to beta versions of the OS, all my "multitasking" apps were still "running" completely through a backup, OS upgrade, and restore. Pretty darned awesome how you can still have apps running through a couple of system reboots.

I find it annoying that there is no way to NOT have them background when you quit them. Most of the time, a user knows when and what apps they want running continuously. Large apps, mainly games, don't need to be taking up resources when not actively in use. One of the cool features I like when I had briefly jailbroken my iPad, was to prevent an app from backgrounding, all you had to do was hold the home button 1 second to quit the app instead of a quick press of the button which would background it.

Yea Apple's/Job's "just forget about it" might SOUND good in theory, but in real practice having almost EVERY single app on your iDevice "running" in your task bar makes it even harder to get to the apps you want to access. So you must then return to finding and selecting the apps through the normal desktop.

And yes, a lot of apps start acting funny when they are perpetually suspended and never get to quit to cleanup. So I find myself almost regularly quitting all background apps multiple times a day.

7-inch iPad coming? Loose lips in Shenzen say yes (TUAW.com)

Sep 24th 2010 2:04PM I think it will be a very good size. As stated above, using the same resolution as the iPhone 4 retina display would mean that many apps are already for it. Which might be what Apple had in mind all along.

Also, it would finally be a good replacement for my Newton 2000! I could use the same case my Newton came with. A 7" iPad lends itself more to a "daytimer" size to be able to carry around and put in purses too. I think a 7" iPad would sell very well into the female demograpic, especially if Apple offers it in multiple colors. :-)

Engadget: Apple TV gets apps, new name in iTV (TUAW.com)

Aug 11th 2010 6:01PM iTV was the original name until it hit a trademark conflict, so if the name does change back, I would assume Apple either crushed/brought or paid-off the company that owned that name.

Also, wouldn't the new Magic Trackpad be a cool way to control the new device?

Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid headed for production (Engadget)

Jul 28th 2010 6:45PM Don't forget it can get EITHER 78mpg OR go 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Just not both at the same time. :-)
