Career Changers Choose Teaching (Careers Articles - Online Degrees)

Jun 29th 2009 5:21AM When I left teaching two years ago, I was still waiting on the flood of retirees to leave the field to open up the job market a bit. I believe we are still waiting on this... as we have been since the 80's at least. If someone wants to go into teaching, that's fine, but they should know that the job market is not as good as so many would have you believe. There continues to be between 600 and 800 applicants for each teaching position in area districts (Metro Detroit area) and those who do have jobs are not secure. I have know several teachers over the last few years who have been given pink slips after 10 years of service because of budget cutbacks. Don't even get me started on how much it costs to retain your license versus how much you make...

Nine-Year-Old Carries Hurt Friend to Safety (ParentDish)

Jan 18th 2009 1:11AM Hello people! Janet was not saying that hit and run was okay, she's saying it's easy to understand because people are so damn selfish that they would rather risk someone's life than take responsibility for their actions! How could so many people have misunderstood her post? Do you not understand context, sarcasm, syntax, ENGLISH!?

Parents Sue School in Nude Cheerleader Photo Scandal (Switched)

Dec 9th 2008 9:15PM The first amendment takes a second seat to child pornography. Even though the girls were stupid for taking the pictures, you can't pass around naked pictures of minors! Legally they are not old enough to consent to the photos or to the disbursement of such.

Sexual Innuendo Dropped From Led Zeppelin Song at Olympic Closing Ceremony (Fanhouse Olympics Blog)

Aug 25th 2008 5:23AM I totally agree! I still remember China's performance at the closing ceremony of the Athen's games, it was amazing! London has a lot of work to do.

Jon and Kate - Are they good enough parents for TV? (ParentDish)

Aug 1st 2008 8:07AM Well, Katie, I understand it's not real life. They have their lives filmed everyday, and I am sure that they do garner some income from the show. They also have a book coming out with some of her recipes and their story, I'm sure that wouldn't have happened without the show, and I'm sure that companies do give them free stuff. But, so what. We've seen with celebrities and other rich and famous that being rich and having everything you want and getting everything you need does not necessarily equal happy, well adjusted kids. It takes work. They don't pretend to afford the trip and surgeries, in fact they are open about where these things came from. They are Christians and feel that what they have received are blessings, and really they are. What is wrong with people trying to help them out? You're going to hold it against them that they were sought out to do a TV show about their family? I think people should be more upset that celeb moms like Jennifer Lopez talk openly about how her twins never wear the same outfit more than once and that some of the outfits are designer outfits and cost upwards of $1000. The Gosselins were not wealthy people, they got lucky. Are there people who need help more and are more deserving of a break like this? Sure, I don't doubt that there are. But, you know what, some people just get lucky like that. I have two boys and was fired from my teaching job (at a charter school with no union) because I took too much time off when I was pregnant with the first one (I went on maternity leave early because of a complication) and then when my husband had a stroke. I lost my insurance the day before the second was born. We lost our house, a car and couldn't afford a lawyer to get my job back. It sucks, but I don't begrudge others who get lucky. I already explained why I like watching Jon and Kate, but I would suggest like others that if you don't like it then turn the channel. They rock and the way they interact with each other and their kids is real. If they make some money doing it, so what.

Jon and Kate - Are they good enough parents for TV? (ParentDish)

Aug 1st 2008 12:02AM Yeah, it's terrible to set limits on your kids and make them eat healthy. Sheesh!

Jon and Kate - Are they good enough parents for TV? (ParentDish)

Jul 31st 2008 11:48PM Real life is not like Full House, The Brady Bunch, or The Cosby Show. Jon and Kate are real and have remained so during the filming of the show. Just because a parent is strict about what their kids eat and do does not mean the kids are not loved, in fact, not having discipline and letting your kids eat whatever they want is child abuse. My husband and I try to limit how much sugar our kids eat because we were always given whatever we wanted, regardless of nutritional value. Diabetes runs in our families and my husband and I (and our parents) are all obese. We are trying to develop good habits for ourselves and set good examples for our boys. Most importantly, we are trying to give our kids a fighting chance. Jon and Kate's kids eat vegetables at lunch and dinner! They are healthy and happy kids! Have you ever seen them play? Do the kids look unhappy? Do those of you making the negative comments have kids? How many? Having kids brings out the good and the bad in a relationship and the more kids there are the more stressful it becomes. I think Jon and Kate are doing the best they can, and they say that. It's not perfect and for those of you who are doing it better, well, congratulations. No one, no couple, no parent is perfect and if they say they are they are hiding the truth. As far as the money thing, as an ignorant comment suggested (no doubt written by someone who does not regularly watch the show), Kate averages $150 a week on groceries - to feed 10! I can't do that! Can you? If they were raking in big bucks, don't you think that they would spend a little more on groceries?
Jon and Kate, if by chance you happen across this, I want you to know that you guys are doing great and you're an inspiration in the way that you raise your kids. People need to know that it is okay to set limits for your children and to teach them to eat healthy and not give them garbage all day. I appreciate your honesty and I want you to know that I take comfort in the fact that there are others parents out there that are doing the best they can, but are not perfect and are sometimes just flying by the seat of their pants.

Student's Snow-Day Question Causes Internet Brouhaha (Switched)

Jan 24th 2008 7:08AM I love how people comment about how no one at school teaches kids manners. Well, guess what, teachers should only have to reinforce what the kids learn at home, and parents are teaching there kids to feel entitled to everything and instilling them with an, "I don't take crap from anybody" attitude. When teachers do try and teach kids manners, respect for themselves and others, and how to live a life fit for society, they get into trouble because they are violating someone's civil rights. You know what, there are some very basic ways of living that have nothing to do with culture or religion or anything else. I used to be a teacher but I had to get out. Not only do they get a bum rap, but they get no support. If people think that kids should be in school more then you are going to have to put your money where your mouth is because teachers will need to be paid more. They do not make enough money and saying that it's easy because the have all of the vacations is a grave injustice to those that give their heart and soul to education your children only to be grossly under appreciated. FYI, on their "vacations," teachers are attending more schooling and classes to maintain their certification. They work second jobs so they can pay the bills. They advise student groups through the summer and coach and tutor their students. If you think that being a teacher is easy or great just because of the vacations then I recommend you volunteer in a school setting for a few weeks straight and see what they have to put up with on a daily basis. And, you know what, talk to a teacher, and see how much they owe in student loans from undergrad and how much they have to take out for continuing certification.

'I Won't Let My Child Believe In Santa' (News Bloggers)

Dec 23rd 2007 8:38PM Out of curiousity, do those of you who won't let your children believe in Santa, do you tell them the truth about the Easter Bunny and Tooth fairy, too? Or do you want them to know that that shiny nickel under their pillow came from you, too.

Seriously, though, those of you who were angry with your parents because you felt like they perpetuated some sort of charade against you, I think there are other issues there. Also, my parents did what one woman who commented did, they said that Santa represented some of what the spirit of Christmas is supposed to be.

Oh, and those of you who really want to get into religion, there are denominations of Christians who don't celebrate Christmas because they believe it is beyond their scope to identify the day of Jesus' birth. They celebrate his birth everyday.

And, to the reader who chooses not to have a commercial Christmas, you are suggesting that just because people buy gifts for each other that they are giving in to the commercialism of Christmas. That's quite a generalization, as is the idea that just because kids believe in Santa then Christmas is commercialized.
