I Spent $3,000 to Save My Dog - and I'd Do It Again (Pawnation OLD)

Jun 22nd 2010 11:09PM When my two pet goldfish got dropsy and ich at the same time, I didn't do what my mother suggested and just let them die. I went to the fish experts at the local pet store and asked what I could do for them. They sent me home with drops for the water. One fish died even after treatment, and the other was blind in one eye and had stunted fins on one side, but he was still alive. If I'd go to the trouble to save a couple of feeder fish, I would certainly go to whatever trouble necessary to save my dog.

My dogs are like my kids. I wouldn't give up on my son if he needed an expensive surgery, and I wouldn't give up on my dog either.

SmackDown: Should Parents Bring Babies Into a Bar? (ParentDish)

Jan 25th 2010 8:51AM
Neither of these two articles seem to address the more important
reasons to NOT take your child to the bar. It's irresponsible,
stupid, and unsafe! My state doesn't allow anyone under 21 in a bar
anymore (they passed a a law a few years ago), but I firmly believe
that all bars should only allow patrons 18 and older.

I have four-year-old, and I would NEVER take him to a bar. When i go out, I find a sitter, because some of the places my fiance and I like to go are not kid-friendly.

If Mom or Dad is busy drinking, they're not paying attention to the
child and that poses all kinds of hazards. Even if they're only
drinking soda, they're presumably at the bar to visit with people,
which means their child is not on their minds and something bad could
happen - something like the baby crawling out of Mommy's lap and
getting into something (and we all know that bar floors are
disgusting) or getting stepped on or eating something they should
definitely NOT eat.

Welfare 101: Starving students go on food stamps (WalletPop)

Aug 21st 2008 1:01PM I also should add that I don't get child support from my son's father because his parental rights were terminated due to abusive treatment of my son. So I'm on my own with the bills and tuition.

Welfare 101: Starving students go on food stamps (WalletPop)

Aug 21st 2008 12:49PM While I agree that the students who just don't want to ask for money are leaching off the system, a good number of students truly cannot afford school and groceries, not to mention car paymens, gas, and rent. It's unreasonable to lump EVERY student in with the ones who don't want to work. There are circumstances with every individual.

I'm a full-time college student. I'm also a single mom with a special-needs child. I don't make much money, and I've applied for food stamps. It isn't that I'm being lazy. It's that my family can't help me out, I can only work so many hours a week because of school and my son's therapy sessions, and I don't get every grant or scholarship I apply for. My child requires therapy, special shoes and equipment, a special diet, a special-needs daycare, and a handful of prescriptions that require more money than I can afford. Most of the things I buy are on sale and I use coupons almost religiously. I do my best and I still have to visit food banks, shop at thrift stores, and bargain-hunt in order to make ends meet.

Surprising dogs breeds to be wary of (ParentDish)

Jul 10th 2008 4:19PM We've had three doxies. One passed away a few years ago, one is a year old and one is a new puppy. None of them have ever bitten people intentionally - we taught them not to bite when they were babies. The youngest, Scamp, is still learning. They bark when the doorbell rings, but they always stop as soon as the visitor comes in and says hi to them. They have never bitten my two-year-old son at all beyond the occasional puppy-nip (which we're working on), even when he tugs on ears and fur. I've had to take Scamp with me to my son's therapy sessions this week (he's still too small to be left in the crate for more than half an hour and we're usually gone at hour and a half). The therapy clinic is a busy, noisy place and Scamp happily takes up residence at my feet or in my lap and has no objections to the kids petting him. I always tell them to let him sniff their fingers first and to pet nicely, and as a result we've never had any nipped kidlets.

Now, I will admit that *occasionally* Peanut (the year-old doxie) gets at it with Lexi (our year-old golden retriever) over a toy. When that happens we have to separate them. I have a scar on my right wrist from one particularly nasty "episode" a few months back. Peanut lunged at Lexi right as I was trying to separate them and she got me instead. It took a few seconds to pry her off, and she was all apologies after that - kisses and sad-eyes because she knew she'd hurt me.

I think the article is misleading. It may be true that Dachshunds have more bites, but it's mostly because they're a small breed and their chief way of protecting themselves from a threat, whether real or imagined, is to bite. Any responsible dog owner who has taught his or her pet that biting is not acceptable won't have a problem with biting. For the older adopted dogs who haven't been properly socialized, it may take some additional work compared with new puppies, but with training any dog can be taught not to bite.

Quick Sip - Grilled Honeydew Sorbet Sparkler (AOL Food Blog)

Feb 12th 2008 5:33PM What's your issue, SilverClaws? Some people actually do have ice cream makers. You must have a sad life, to snark at an online recipe and make rude comments about the author.

Parents delousing their kids at boutiquey salons (That's Fit)

Jan 13th 2008 12:14AM We used mayonnaise on my sister's hair. She smelled like a deli sandwich for a little while, but the lice were gone!

I've heard oils and hair gel work well for getting the bugs out; they don't like dirty hair, and oil will make for a "dirty" place to crawl around in!

Electric Football Is Back! (Switched)

Jan 12th 2008 7:00PM Actually, it's older than the 80s. My dad had it when he was a kid in the 70s. Mom just bought him one of these games for Christmas as a gag gift; he was joking with his brother about wanting electric football, Hot Wheels track, and Jarts. My sisters and I got him the Hot Wheels. If they weren't banned in the US, I'm sure someone woul've managed to find Jarts, too, lol.

Looking for love? Try the airport (Gadling)

Dec 1st 2007 8:58PM Funny... I actually met my last boyfriend at the airport on the way home from vacation! It didn't work out, sadly, but it was fun while it lasted!

Brangelina to Adopt Ethiopian Child? (The Cooler)

Aug 30th 2007 1:38PM Shiloh is so pictured...if you look right below Brad's arm, you cna see the baby's leg. Sorta.
Anywho.. if they're a mixed-race family, why does each kid need someone who looks like them? Then again, if the Jolie-Pitt brood adds another, that's one less kid that will live in terrible conditions. Even US orphans are much better off, compared with the rest of the world's orphans! I say that, because I've seen firsthand the conditions that a lot of them live in. However... I wonder if it isn't time for them to focus on Europe? They have Asia (twice!) and Africa.
