Take Back the Beep: AT&T promises to make some changes, T-Mobile and Verizon slow on the uptake (Engadget)

Aug 15th 2009 6:15PM Unfortunately, the "press 1' trick requires you to know in advance which carrier the person you’re calling uses, which is unrealistic!... see my post on the subject here: http://bit.ly/18VWO1

It's 1 for Sprint. But it's * for Verizon, # for AT&T, etc.

Making the instructions optional would be a MUCH superior idea.

Take Back the Beep: AT&T promises to make some changes, T-Mobile and Verizon slow on the uptake (Engadget)

Aug 15th 2009 4:29PM It's not 15 seconds of your life they're wasting. It's actually over three hours a year (assuming you check or leave voicemail a couple times daily), listening to the same stupid instructions, over and over again.

Meanwhile, you're using up your airtime, helping to feed over $1 billion a year to the coffers of the cellphone companies.

Where's the beep? Cell phone users revolt against money-wasting voicemail prompts (WalletPop)

Aug 1st 2009 12:48AM Misty wrote: "Most companies offer more than one level of voicemail service, which makes it necessary to list the options because they will vary"

This is absolutely false. The canned 15-second message is identical for every customer of each carrier: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile. It cannot be changed.

"Speak to those you call and tell them that you don't like it."

That's absurd! The people you call CAN'T TURN IT OFF!

Don't you get it? That's the whole point!

Walt Mossberg reviews the iPhone 3G, isn't that impressed (now with more David Pogue and Ed Baig!) (Engadget)

Jul 8th 2008 10:33PM "He also makes passing reference to the GPS antenna being “too small” to function as a proper GPS, which makes roughly zero sense to us. "

Well, here, I'll explain it to you.

Real GPS systems (Garmin, Tom Tom, etc.) have MASSIVE antennas inside--the entire box is designed to extend the sensitivity of the GPS antenna.

The iPhone is too small to have all that metal or all that reach, although even the tiny ring around the camera lens is part of the GPS antenna.

The GPS antenna in the iPhone is just too tiny to get decent reception. That's the point.

iPhone: The Musical (TUAW.com)

Jul 5th 2007 9:35PM Man, all day long I deal with hate mail, nasty blogs, and unpleasantness--this blog post SO made my day!

(P.S... I didn't throw a real phone into the water! If you look closely, there was a camera cut right there. What REALLY fell into the water was a rock!)

Does the Media Love Apple Too Much? (Switched)

Jul 3rd 2007 4:07PM "David Pogue's review of the iPhone appeared on the front page of The New York Time's Business section, an honor that, as far as we know, has never been given to a cell phone."

Interesting writeup--just one correction. My column appears on the front page of the Business section in the Times EVERY WEEK. Has for years. Reviews of cellphones, cameras, doesn't matter--that's where it appears. :)
