I Was Homeschooled: What it Taught Me That a Classroom Never Could (MyDaily)

Jan 15th 2011 4:22AM I am laughing over some of the comments here.....seriously anise...mental health evaluations for people who prefer to homeschool??!!! I would be saying that you need a mental health evaluation because it sounds like you have a problem accepting anything that goes against your definition of the norm. Scary thought that you might be raising kids and raising them to be as critical and judgemental as you are!! Obviously your comments tell us that you have issues dealing with anything that goes outside of your box....I think most pyschologists would say that is a mental health issue!!

Obviously homeschooling is not for everyone, just as public school is not for everyone. And a parent chosing to homeschool should not deem them mentally unstable. In early elementary school I found out that my daughter had a learning disability and they told me she would never go above 6th grade. After years of fighting for the extra help she legally was entitled too, only to be told there wasn't money to deal with kids like her and to write my congressman and complain, I found an online schooling program which is classed as homeschooling even though she has a certified teacher supervising every class and provided curriculum and started homeschooling my daughter. She is now in the 8th grade and is a straight A student! And every year I have her take the state tests at one of the public schools just to be able to say, "And to think your professional psychologist said she'd never make it past 6th grade!"

Online schools are growing in leaps and bounds and they more meet the needs of students individually versus some number in a classroom we can only spend x amount of money on. These kids are out-testing kids in the public school systems even though they are learning from home. Is it for everyone? No......Look at the writer.....she not only went to college, but GRAD school! How many of your public school educated children did that?! Just as the public school system fails and holds some students back, homeschooling is not for everyone either....but many kids thrive in the environment and are better for it. My daughter recently was at the mall with some public school friends and they were all learning about the Civil War in US History. They sat in class and listened to a teacher lecture and watched a video and then took a multiple choice test. My daughter did a video debate where she took a stand as a person from the north or south and defended why their side thought the war was justified and for what reasons. She did an interactive web essay (which none of her friends even knew what it was) written from the perspective of a teen growing up during the Civil War and what their life was like. She did a project where she learned to analyze photos for clues that told the story of the Civil War....you know kind of like historians. Her friends sat in a class and likely doodled and maybe even slept while their teacher lectured them. Seriously who do think has a better understanding and knowledge of the Civil War?! Some of her public school friends actually laugh over how much more work she does than them....others wish they were homeschooled because the lessons and work is so much more entertaining than a lecture. Studies have proven than while not for everyone, more people benefit from hands on learning than a lecture. Homeschooling typically gives much more of that to students than public school does.

As to the person claiming they grew up isolated....well that was the fault of your parents. There are tons of clubs and groups that give kids interaction with other kids. My daughter plays sports, she cheers and does lots of community service that keeps her involved with kids her age. There are so many life skills kids are not learning in public school....like how to write a thank you note because we have become so obsessed with test scores instead of really what our kids need to learn and experience. The kids waste so much time at school....my daughter does more work than most of her friends in public school and does it in half the time. She has the rest of the day to learn to cook, sew and learn about things not being taught in our schools. I worked as a cashier supervisor for many years and was always floored over how many of the cashiers could not count back change.....a skill over 70% of students will need to use in their lifetime. My child can....can yours?

Again....it is not the answer or solution for everyone, but don't knock the parents who chose to homeschool. Keep in mind that long ago, ALL kids were homeschooled and it seems to me that back then life was much more simple. Suicide was unheard of, kids were respectful and taught values. There was virtually no teen pregnancy rate. People didn't walk into buildings and shoot lots of innocent people. Children did not have mile long criminal rap sheets before they turned 18...there was no need for a juvenille justice system. I have two older children who did attend public school and I wish I could go back and home school them like and am the youngest. None of you should be criticizing something you never did or tried. I tried both ways and I am proud to have a wonderful, smart and well socialized child who is homeschooled! And I don't need a mental evaluation either!

Disney Donald Duck Groping Case To See Day In Court (AOL Travel News)

Jan 5th 2011 1:30AM I have a relative who works in characters and they are not allowed to speak in the costumes and have guides there watching them to ensure that does not happen (the guides also watch to keep them safe from people and are their eyes because their vision is very limited in the costume). However.....we were there once with the relative and were behind the scenes and he tried to say something to me and I could not understand a word he was saying through the costume it is so big and bulky. Feel one of their hands sometime....it is huge with padding....it is not a glove...they could not even pick up a cup and manage to take a drink in the "hands" for most of the costume characters. Anyone who has ever actually worn one of these costumes would know there is no way you would intentionally grope anything......most of the time they are not even sure where their hands or paws are even going! One of the previous cases similar to this was won when the jury was allowed to try on the costume and see that for themselves! These are nothing more than money hungry people making a mockery of our legal system and looking for a free ride to being well off!

Lindsay Lohan on 'Dancing With the Stars'? Her Rep Says No (AOL TV)

Dec 9th 2010 6:27PM I would not watch one episode if they put her on the show. I have watched every season and that would end it for me. Of course being a mom of a tween, I am sick of seeing these celebs be poor role models and basically end up being rewarded for it! Palin was not impressive either...why not put a kid like the little girl Bailey who runs the organization www.HeroHugs.org. We need to see more of the kids like her in the spotlight!

What Not to Wear: How to Speed Through Airport Security (AOL Travel News)

Nov 24th 2010 9:12AM I want to know why Congress is exempted from this. I think they should have to spend some time travelling like the rest of us with their families as well and get NO special priveleges! Maybe then we will see some justice done for the people of America!!

Even better I want to see Obama and his wife stand their and watch a TSA agent they do not know give this pat down to their daughters!

And the stupidity is that we go through all this and the terrorists will just target something else. Clearly they are a lot smarter than anyone working for the TSA!

Injuries from nursery products rose sharply last year, study shows (WalletPop)

Nov 4th 2010 2:35AM I hate to be the one to say it, but I think it is all these young people having babies who do not watch them and pay attention to them. A high chair, stroller or playpen is not a babysitter for your child. There are more and more young adults under 25 having children when they can't even take care of themselves. I would bet that many of these injuries could be contributed to parent stupidity! A lot of them are used and most baby items do not recommend resale especially when the original directions are not supplied. Often there have been recalls and improvements made to the items. But the younger generation having these kids before they can afford them will keep these accidents rising!

'Dancing With the Stars' Results: Who Got Voted Off Oct. 26? (AOL TV)

Oct 27th 2010 11:08AM Most of America is voting on who they like the most, who entertains them the most....NOT who really has the best dancing skills and techniques. Not quite sure why the judges were shocked...this is what happens when you put things in America's hands! Look how many washed up Idols we have now. Anytime you vote it becomes a popularity contest, or loyalty contest.....it is never just based on the real reasons people should be voting in the first place!

Lindsay Lohan Is Out of Jail (PopEater)

Sep 25th 2010 12:04PM Just like we all knew she would....I mean seriously our system actually punish one of these rich spoiled celebrity brats! I laugh over the alcohol bracelet....didn't she have it go off and have some stupid excuse the court bought everytime?!! Any non-rich, regular person pulling this stuff would be sitting in jail. Give her a freaking YEAR with NO special conditions and NO early release and I bet the little brat would finally grow up! And what is more sad is that she can do interviews and make money off being in jail...that should be illegal!!

Family Sues SeaWorld Orlando, Witnessed Whale Trainer Death (AOL Travel News)

Aug 31st 2010 1:51AM Seriously??? "There seemed to be no plan as to what to do to save Dawn," the lawsuit says. "The SeaWorld employees were acting in an unorganized and chaotic manner." So what do these idiots propose?? That Seaworld should have thrown a few trainers in to a whale to make sure that in the event it really happened, their employees knew how to react appropriately??? Again, seriously! How does one prepare for a whale attack??!! The things people will grasp at to get a few bucks is unbelievable!! Did it ever dawn on these idiotic parents to remove their child, cover his face, run out or did they just stand there and stare in an unorganizaed and chaotic manner like the employees?? The child only saw what they as parents let their child see! And naturally with parents like this, the kid will be using this card to excuse every rotten thing he does for the rest of his life! it will always be the fault of Seaworld!!

'Bachelor' Star Vienna Claims She's Posing for Playboy (PopEater)

Aug 19th 2010 1:33PM "The Bachelor didn't pay me a dime, and I ran through my savings living with Jake (Pavelka)," Vienna says. "I need the money."

I think this says it all. From the beginning I thought she was just looking for a guy to pay her way through life! She is trash and always will be! I am not sure what to think of Jake, but it is no wonder he can't get a women when you consider what he goes for! Playboy must really be lowering their standards if they'd give her the time of day! It is no wonder Jake wasn't up for touching her...has the girl looked in a mirror lately? The fact that she is so ugly and fake on the inside makes her twice as ugly on the outside!

Nick Jonas' 'Les Miserables' Role is Extended for Two More Weeks (Just So You Know)

Jul 9th 2010 2:32AM Maybe they could just cancel some more of their concerts and crush the kids who had the tickets!! Jo Bros know how to treat their fans!!
