The current generation really doesn't spend enough time reflecting on the near-past and taking a look at the tremendous impact that computers and the internet have had on society in the last 10 years.
Today, in 2008, I make the majority of my non-food purchases on the internet.
Today, in 2008, more of my friends have met their significant others through the internet than through offline interactions.
Today, in 2008, I have met the vast majority of my offline friends through online message boards.
Today, in 2008, I spend 100% of my time a work on a computer.
It's FRICKING INSANE.
I remember paying for internet by the hour.
I remember the day I first got internet service.
I remember playing my first online video game.
I remember goddamn ALT.GAMES message boards.
I am a part of the generation that grew up, not before, not after, but DURING the dawn of the internet, and it's GODDAMN MIND BOGGLING.
This is it, gang.
We're the last generation to be born before the internet existed.
It may not seem like it to some of you right now, but this is a HUGE goddamn deal.
In 30 to 40 years you're going to have people interviewing you about what life was like before there was an internet, because nobody will be able to fathom how people could exist in a pre-connectivity era.

The iPod Touch doesn't have a phone or camera.
Plenty of PDAs get similar upgrades for free.

Sarbanes-Oxley isn't making Apple charge for this. Sarbanes-Oxley doesn't apply to this at all.
Apple is CHOOSING to charge iPod Touch users because they know they'll pay up since they don't have any other options.
The moral of the story is to NEVER buy a 1.0 product from Apple, because they'll shaft you every chance they get.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I expected to get the same kind of support (free updates) for my iPhone that I do for my Powerbook and iMac, particularly since we all knew about the SDK pretty early on.
I became an early adopter based on the iPod Touch's *POTENTIAL* and not necessarily because I thought it was 100% perfect at the time.

Jaws has it right.
I've gotten countless FREE updates for my Xbox 360 that add major new functionality (divx support for playing movies from external USB drives!) all from the big "bad" Microsoft, while Apple wants to nickel and dime me for any minor update to the iPod Touch OS.
When Microsoft is offering better customer support than Apple something is wrong in the world.

The 5 App Pack was never successfully cracked (without jailbreaking and voiding warranties), and I doubt that the 2.0 version will be cracked either.

Jun 9th 2008 2:13PM And Apple shafts the iPod Touch users again, charging them for a relatively minor system update that would be free on practically any other Apple platform.
I called this one as soon as they wanted to charge for the elements of the system updated included in the 5 App Pack, which is why I didn't buy it.
I'll still buy Apple products, but my experience with the iPod Touch has completely soured me on ever being an early-adopter.

Feb 22nd 2008 4:12PM I am outraged that Apple is charging early buyers of the iPod Touch $20 for a system update that ought to be free.
While I understand Apple's decision to charge money for the new applications the new $20 "application pack" also includes a SYSTEM UPDATE in the form of the home page editing, web clips, and lyrics features. All of these are updates to the currently existing iPod Touch software and NOT new applications, which means that they ought to be free to all users of the iPod Touch.
Adding insult to injury these applications are all hidden in the 1.1.3 system update, a whopping 104.4mb file that all users must download if they want to fix bugs in the system. These applications can only be used when you pay Apple $20 to "unlock" them, but even if you decide not to buy them they stay on your iPod taking up precious space that could be used for songs, videos, or photos.
Apple is normally wonderful when it comes to providing system support and updates, but having them shaft early adopters and loyal fans like this is offensive and shows that Apple has absolutely no regard for the iPod Touch community.
