USDA To Introduce "Biobased" Label (Slashfood)

Jan 23rd 2011 2:53PM While I don't want to eat GMO corn. Using it for fuel and packaging is definitely a plus. As a crop it required less water and little or no pesticide. Thus reducing the footprint on the ecosystem.
The modification is a naturally occurring bacterium found in the soil. So returning it to the soil should prove harmless. If it were possible for the plants in your garden to assimilate this bacterium on their own, monsanto would not be wasting it's time figuring out how to breed it into the corn.

Bacillus thuringiensis (or Bt) is a Gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium, commonly used as a biological alternative to a pesticide; alternatively, the Cry toxin may be extracted and used as a pesticide. B. thuringiensis also occurs naturally in the gut of caterpillars of various types of moths and butterflies, as well as on the dark surface of plants.[1]

During sporulation many Bt strains produce crystal proteins (proteinaceous inclusions), called δ-endotoxins, that have insecticidal action. This has led to their use as insecticides, and more recently to genetically modified crops using Bt genes. There are however many crystal-producing Bt strains that do not have insecticidal properties.[2]

'Don't Talk to Strangers' is Dangerous Advice (ParentDish)

Jul 23rd 2010 1:53PM As an adult it is not safe to talk to strange children.
When I see a child who is obviously lost in a store or park, I never approach them or speak to them. The last thing in the world I want is some panicked parent to find me talking to their missing child. I usually keep the child in sight until either their parent finds them or until I can point them out to someone official.
I tell my son to "find someone working" at or near where you are lost. They have a reason to be there and are the safest bet for help.
I never told him not to talk to strangers but I did tell him if a stranger, or even someone he knows, touches him, to start screaming as loud as he can and don't stop until they let go.

Educated People May Not Be as Liberal as They Say They Are (Asylum)

Jul 18th 2010 2:59AM I don't like taxes. I don't care if that means no public education or public roads. If you cant afford it you don't get to have it. I have no problem with gay marriage, do whatever with whomever, I don't care. No unemployment insurance, get rid of that I don't want to pay for it. I think the borders should be open, if you can get here you are an American. If someone takes your job, then you weren't doing it right. I don't believe in organized religion, and I think all war is wrong for any reason. I think we need to stop burning oil and invest in solar and wind. I won't eat anything GMO or anything that has been fed a GMO. I think the environment must be protected at any cost, I don't care how many jobs that might kill. I think insurance companies need to be eliminated, without them the cost of medical care would drop like a rock. Doctors can only charge what the market will bear and without the insurance companies nobody could bear what is being charged now.

What I am not sure about is this. Am I a conservative or a liberal?

At the Tea Party Rally: Obama 'the Communist' (Politics Daily)

Apr 19th 2010 2:44AM The Tea Party wants to eliminate Social Security, Medicare, and Public Education. They want to close the National Parks and stop Maintenance of the Interstate Highway System. The Tea Party wants to defund the Military and National Security. They want to shut down the FBI and the IRS. The Tea Party is a party of Anarchists and they don't even realize it. I love the Tea Party.

Airline Fees on the Rise: What You Need to Know (AOL Travel News)

Apr 7th 2010 6:32PM I live in Hawaii and fly for business regularly. I have learned not to take air travel for granted. It is a luxury we pay for, nobody is entitled to it. In the last 3 years in Hawaii we have lost 2 carriers and airfare has tripled. But without them I am stranded. They need to make a profit, I am happy to pay. Just please keep flying those planes.

And BTW, AMTRACK is fun.......once. Please don't make me do that again.

Do Special Features Take the Cinematic Magic Away? (Cinematical)

Apr 5th 2010 2:37PM A good movie IS a magic trick. A story is told as the deck is shuffled and items are palmed. Attention is diverted as various sleights are performed. A spell is woven through combined tricks of light, dialogue, sound, and music and the viewer is transported to a constructed reality.

You come to see the magic, and you are disappointed when it fails to beguile you.

I agree with Mr. Redford.

The Coming Foreclosure Flood (Housingwatch)

Feb 18th 2010 12:54PM This is not Bush's fault or Obama's fault. Everyone in the world wanted to own US real estate. When you sign a loan doc for 100,000 with 20,000 down you create 80,000 in paper value. That can be sold as a security. The Companies on Wall Street saw the opportunity to create Billions of Dollars just by collecting signatures and selling them as securities. Then , as if that wasn't enough, they insured those securities and turned around and sold the policies for equal value (creating another 80,000).
This was then handed out in bonuses and converted into Jewelry, Cars , Parties and other forms of excess. It was the greatest transfer of wealth in human history. America was looted like Haiti and all the money went to very few people. Who still have it.
Sorry about your farm Jen. But look on the bright side, you would have found yourself indentured to Monsanto if you had achieved the Farm.
