The Shiloh Effect -- Moms Who Opt for Weird Baby Names Narcissists? (Lemondrop)
Mar 8th 2010 10:31PM Take it from someone who grew up with an unusual name. I HATED it. Everywhere I went, people would get my name wrong. Teachers calliing me by the wrong name, name tags spelled wrong, etc....you get the idea. I'd have to spell my name for everyone, and there was always some kind of comment to be made. That may not seem like a big deal, but as a kid I got very tired of it & it made me feel like I was different from everybody else. Apparently that's the idea of the parents, but kids don't want to be different from everybody else. As an adult, I have no problem with it because as an adult I can deal with it if I feel different. Not so simple for a kid. It also made me a target of other kids...lots of fun being made of me for having what the kids considered a "weird" name. So new parents out there, take note: think of how your unusual name might effect the life of your child.....AND just a note in defense of my parents. I don't think they were narcissitic or trying to make me stand out. They just wanted to name me after my father, and his name was Roderick. There's no ordinary female name for that.....ALSO I don't want to give the impression that it scarred me in some way. It didn't. I just really didn't like having an unusual name when I was growing up. So when I had a child, I made sure he didn't have to grow up that way.
Topless Coffee Bar Stirs Things Up in Maine (Lemondrop)
Feb 26th 2009 12:48PM I have to say I bet most of the people posting here are young. There was a time when modesty was a virtue and this kind of behavior considered slutty. And you can insult me all you want or say I’m too old fashioned and that I don’t understand. Throwing insults seems to be the only way you can respond to someone who disagrees with you. But you see, you’re the ones who don’t understand. I’ve been in your shoes, but you’ve never been in mine. It is true that with age comes wisdom. Just because you can do something, and just because you want to do something, doesn’t mean you should. I feel sorry for young people today with nudity and pornography so prolific. It takes all the fun, excitement and mystery out of it all. It becomes commonplace. Maybe that’s why we see young people today doing crazier and crazier things in search of the excitement and mystery that’s been stolen from them by the crude culture of today. It’s a shame. But please ask yourselves, “Where does it stop?”
Dad calls from Iraq, son gets suspended (ParentDish)
Apr 18th 2008 12:00PM I have to respond to all those responding to Eugene....I do believe his remark was intended to be sarcastic...at least that's how I read it. I don't think he truly thought that the 'sanctitiy of the classroom environment' was more important than the bond between a father and son....hence the sarcasim. So he was condemning the school officials just as you are.
People's choice for Wendy's Burger chosen and we're confused (Slashfood)
Dec 11th 2007 10:28AM I remember the original Wendy burgers. Wow! I loved them. I was in my teens when the first Wendys opened in my home town. It was about a 15 minute drive from where we lived. I'd tell my mom, why don't you skip fixing dinner and let me drive to Wendys and get burgers. It was always such a wonderful treat. But now, I never order a Wendy burger, the meat just doesn't taste good. But I do like their spicy chicken filet, so I hope they don't change that. Bring back the original Wendy burger!!
A PIN for Your Credit (Switched)
Aug 3rd 2007 11:31AM Leave it to the federal gov't to screw things up....I won't use the freeze if I'm limited to only 2 unfreezes per year. You never know when some unexpected thing could happen causing you to want to unlock your credit. If that happens and you've already used up your 2 allocated unfreezes, then you're just up the creek without a paddle. It's ridiculous to have the federal gov't limit our access to our own credit!!!!
