MLK, USA: Many King Streets Stuck on Economic Outskirts (AOL Real Estate)
Jan 19th 2012 10:26PM I suppose I do not mind the naming of streets after him, but when you have one in every town, and sometimes when you are looking for a doctor's office or business, it can get confusing. I know of a MLK BLVD, PKWY, ST AVE, & RD. All in surrounding towns.
The Country's Biggest Tourist Trap: South of the Border (Gadling)
Jul 19th 2011 12:56AM I worked there in the late 80s (at the MB shop). Basically, a few dozen stores with pretty much all the same inventory with very little variation. Dirty, outdated, not kept up with maintence, safety, or even basic grounds upkeep. The gas prices there are (and always have been) outrageous. Travel into Dillon (about 7 miles) and you can pay up to 30 cents less per gallon.
IMHO, if you really need to stop and use the restroom, get a soda, or something simple, or just want some dumb cheap but overpriced SC souvenier, go for it. However, if you are going south, Dillon is 7 miles and there are little quick stops between SOB and Dillon everything that is sold at SOB is much cheaper once you leave its complex.
If you are going north, there is Rowland just over the NC border. Lumberton is about 20 miles from there (on 95). Perhaps SOB was neat in the 50's, maybe 60's, but that is the decade most of the 'attractions' were inspired (if you can actually use that word describing SOB) from. Next to nothing has been updated since.
The signs as far as I know go as far north as NJ. Some were funny, like the one that was upside down and the caption said 'Sign planned in Washington.' Pretty funny. That as about as good as it will get for SOB. SOB reminds me as somewhere either the Bundys (Married With Children) or Roseanne would go to and call it high class.
'Cosby Show' Actress Clarice Taylor Dies at 93 (PopEater)
Jun 1st 2011 5:37PM I loved her in the Cosby Show. I think one of the best episodes with her in it was when Theo was writing a history of the march on Washington D.C. and MLK's 'I have a dream' speech. The ep involved all the adults, but I think she shone in that one. It makes me wonder if any of the adult actors were actually there. They brought that episode and the historical event in which they spoke to life.
RIP Ms Taylor.
Who Will Play the 'Sweet Valley' Twins in the Movie? Francine Pascal Weighs In (PopEater)
May 13th 2011 8:33PM I loved the book series (SVH) as a teen and even into my early 20's. I had the first 60 or 70 books and all the super editions. I did not care for the college years, though. Maybe now I have a few more years to me I'd like it (the college series) better.
I saw the TV series and did not care for it. I got the feeling that few if any of the cast read the books or researched their character, which if there is going to be a movie, that would be the first thing the entire cast would need to do.
I would like to see the entire series go to ebook form. I also hear that the original SVH series has been updated for cell phone use, DVD players instead of VHS, etc. Hm. I hope this does not result in a George Lucas effect. Going back to tweak a great series to the creator's liking at those who like the original editions expense. Perhaps having the two editions side by side letting the reader decide which edition fits them best. (Mr Lucas: are you reading this????)
JMHO.
I also feel the cast of the movie should be all unknown actors. Otherwise there would be a tendency to overlook the unknowns to watch the established actor(s).
Why My E-Reader Will Never Replace My Bookshelf (Shelterpop)
Jan 4th 2011 8:17PM I have a Nook Color. I got the Nook for my mother I love my e-reader. I am on the road alot and when I am not driving, I read. I already have almost 100 books on my e-reader. I would have NO space in my postage stamp size dwelling to put those 100 books, let alone the 6,000 that the NC could hold as it comes, or the additional 25,000 books when the 32GB card the expansion slot can handle is filled, for a total of 30,000 books!
I will keep a few actual books, though...classics, Harry Potter, and a few other text and reference books, but since I bought my NC, I have read more books in the past few months than I have in the past few years.
Christmas list: five things I want from the airlines (Gadling)
Dec 25th 2010 10:24PM How about charging for everything but the air we breathe...oh, wait, we get charged for that.
We get frisked so intimately that if someone on the street did that to us, it'd be a sexual assault, charged for window seating, leg room, extra baggage, food, blankets, pillows, drinks, and I hear even to use the privy?? Then we get charged for fuel, and paper tickets. Is there anything we get free? Oh yeah, attendants (or whatever they care calling themselves these days) who act as if they would rather be anywhere else, and that we are interrupting their trip.
I would not mind paying one all inclusive price for average travel (one carry on bag, two suitcases of typical size). Snacks and a refreshment for flights under four hours, one simple meal for flights longer than four hours. After the snack or meal, then charge a small fee for food and drink. I do not think alcohol should be served on board. It just complicates things, and some people cannot handle much alcohol or handle it very well. However, getting charge an outrageous fee to fly, then another fee for the type ticket I buy, then another for the bags I check on, then for food, drink, legroom, and even seating, even within coach class.
Customer satisfaction is not a goal with any aspect of flying anymore. Nobody cares if we are upset that we had to pay 4.50 for a 8 oz cup with four ice cubes and barely two sips of actual soda. Nobody cares if the meals taste so bad that it is better used as door stops or a remedy for constipation than for nourishment.
Until the airlines remember that their business is largely successful or unsuccessful due to consumer patronage, more and more airlines will go bankrupt because people who travel will either drive themelves, or take a cheaper although longer route.
The Top 10 TV Jerks of 2010: The Archie Bunker Awards (AOL TV)
Dec 17th 2010 9:42PM Let's see...most hated...can we have a top 100. Even then, that would be a cut down list as to who should really be on there.
Kardashians. They're gorgeous, talented, and confident. Just ask them how wonderful they are. They'll tell you. And tell, and tell, and tell.
Janice Dickinson. Gads, woman. Classic case of get off the stage before you are dragged off. The woman is nuts.
Paris Hilton. Is she really that dumb? She could be making such a philanthropic difference...but instead...well, anyway...Even the Simple Life was too much for her.
ANY celebrity who thinks we want cameras to video their every move at any given moment, give it the title of a reality show and think it is entertainment. No, it is BORING. It is an outlet for an immature, vain, silly, soulless and zero personality twit who actually thinks we need their presence for our lives to have meaning *rolls eyes skyward*.
ANY Rocker's 'I want to see how many women I can sleep with and say I am looking for love' show. And the women that show up think they really have a chance!
I miss shows that had heart, drama, comedy (real comedy not the lame crap that is on now), intelligence and thought provoking topics.
Even if ONE good show comes on, there will be up to a dozen lackluster almost carbon copies within the next season. However, we sit back and watch it, so maybe we the television viewing public, myself included, should be on the list for not boycotting the fluff which is nowdays called television 'entertainment'.
Dick Van Dyke Explains Bad Cockney Accent in 'Mary Poppins' (VIDEO) (AOL TV)
Nov 6th 2010 11:37AM I LOVE Dick VanDyke. Classy man. I have never heard him berate anyone. He has had his ups and downs in his life, personally and professionally, but I always see him smiling in his pictures and laughing in interviews. This man is a true star. Today's celebrities are just 'actors'.
One more thing...Thank you and GOD bless those porpoises.
Yoko Ono: 'Sexism, Racism' Made Me an Easy Scapegoat for Beatles Break-Up (VIDEO) (AOL TV)
Oct 21st 2010 11:58AM The Beatles started to splinter during their last U.S. tour in 1966. They were tired of being chased, mauled, and not having any privacy. John's marriage to Cynthia (who has a new book out) was long over before John met Yoko.
I am no fan of Yoko. Smart business woman? Yes. That is about it to her credit. Artist in any sense of the word? No. Cannot paint, sing, or anything that requires an artist's flair. She has a mind like a shark--out for only herself.
However, for whatever reason, John loved her. His last album (that he was alive to release) was his most meaningful, his first adult album. The first one you can see where he made peace with most of his huge demons that plagued him all his adult life.
As for her being a 'scapegoat', please. Linda (Paul's first and best wife) endured alot more crap than Yoko did. I don't remember Linda saying 'poor me'.
Yoko, did you run out of John's unreleased material to make money off of?
Yoko, go make your money off your keen business sense, stay out of the public eye, quit defiling the precious memories of the Beatles to satisfy your ego.
Moviefone Minute: New 'Hobbit' Woes and a New 'Harry Potter' Book? Maybe? (Moviefone Blog)
Sep 28th 2010 10:43PM Maybe not so much a sequel to HP, but how about a book of how the four founders of Hogwarts came together to start the school, how the rift came between them and how Slytherin left, placing the basilik in the Chamber.
Ms Rowling could continue with that generation at Hogwarts, but somehow, it would not be the same. There would be comparisons, and we'd have to learn to care for a whole new set of characters that will not be in #8 and beyond. However, I'd like to see how some of the kids have grown, and how they handle adulthood.
