We've seen outfits and networks dig deep to figure out how to make ads more attractive (or just watchable, really), but Disney's taking things to an entirely new plateau. The mega-corp is establishing a laboratory in Austin, Texas which will actually test the biometric reactions of up to 4,000 people in order to better understand what types of commercials are most effective. In the controlled setting, gurus will be tasked with measuring "heart rate and skin conductivity while tracking the gaze of participants who are exposed to new ad models over the internet, mobile devices and TV screens." As expected, the entire project is being undertaken in order to discover whether it can charge more for certain spots, but we're told not to expect the findings until early next year.
The Get Out Clause -- an unsigned band from Manchester, England -- has used the eyes of the surveillance state to produce its own music video. While Britain currently has an estimated 13-million closed-circuit TV cameras (CCTV), the band only played to 80 of them around the city of Manchester. After playing its song for the CCTV cameras (and anyone else who happened to be around), the band requested the footage from the organizations that own the cameras, under the UK's Freedom of Information Act. While only about 20 of the locations eventually turned over the footage, they had more than enough footage to make a pretty solid music video.

"We wanted to produce something that looked good and that wasn't too expensive to do," guitarist Tony Churnside told Sky News.

Seems the Freedom of Information act could have saved Kevin Smith a bunch of money when he made 'Clerks.' We really wonder if this is the last time we'll see this tricky way of filming (actually, it's not, as Adam Rifkin's recent 'Look' proved). Offensively loud television commercials have been a worldwide annoyance for years, and while a number of technologies have emerged in an attempt to hush those loud-mouths, British regulators are taking matters into their own hands.

Just last week, the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice, which sets British TV ad guidelines, reportedly adopted a new rule establishing that TV ads shouldn't be "excessively noisy or strident." It elaborated by stating that "broadcasters must endeavor to minimize the annoyance that perceived imbalances could cause, with the aim that the audience need not adjust the volume of their television sets during program breaks."

We're told that stations who choose not to invest in the loudness-level meter (which will ensure compliance) may actually have to "turn down the sound during commercials." Of course, whether anyone chooses to actually follow these guidelines has yet to be seen, er, heard.

[Source: IHT via WatchingTVOnline, image courtesy of PaxArcana]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

HDTV Listings for May 13, 2008

What we're watching tonight:
With Apple backing down from its strict, flat-rate pricing policy, don't be surprised to see additional content from previously iTunes-shy providers arriving in succession.

Update: 'Deadwood' ($2.99) and 'Flight of the Conchords' ($1.99) are also available with "much more" apparently in the works.

Update 2: Apple just released the PR.

[Thanks, Turki]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

How to Buy an HDTV for Your PC

Filed under: Audio/Video, Computers, Advice, TV

More and more of us are putting PCs in our living rooms. Some of us are using them as media centers to replace DVRs and DVD players, while others are using them to play video games, Meanwhile, some of us just like to surf the Web, check our e-mail, or watch streamed TV shows on a 42-inch screen.

But hooking up a computer to your TV isn't always easy, and the results aren't always pleasing to the eye. So, with a little help from some Engadget readers, we're going to help you pick out the best television for use with your PC or laptop. Only the results aren't quite in yet, so, for now, we'll provide you with a few tips if you're shopping for a TV in the next few weeks.

First thing you'll want to do is make sure the TV you're considering has the right ports for hooking up a computer. Not all PCs have HDMI yet so look for TVs with a DVI, or at least a VGA port for easily connecting even older PCs.

The next part is trickier. You'll need to find a television that can disable a feature called overscan. Overscan was a necessity on older televisions due to the inconsistent framing of standard definition broadcasts. The problem with overscan is that it causes text to blur, which anyone who has ever played a Super Nintendo role playing game will be very familiar with. This makes basic computing tasks stressful on the eyes. Add to that the tiny icon and font sizes that accompany HD resolutions and you'll need glasses in a week.

Only new 1080p capable sets have this feature, but its' not always advertised, and each company has a different name for it. Newer Sony sets have overscan disabled by default on its PC (VGA) inputs. New Samsung TVs have a 'just scan' mode, and Sharp calls it 'dot-by-dot.' Surprisingly bargain brand Westinghouse HD sets are great for text because they don't perform overscan at all. The downside is poor picture quality on standard definition broadcasts. Sure now we get live HD from the ISS like it's nothing, but much of the last half century of space exploration has never been seen by most in anything other than grainy analog broadcasts. That'll change in June once When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions debuts on Discovery Channel, drawing from more than 150 hours of NASA footage, called a cross between 'The Right Stuff' and EHD fave 'Planet Earth.' The Orlando Sentinel mentions the new doc is part of a push to ensure funding to speed further space explorations, as long as they provide more great HD opportunities we're all for it. Look for the Blu-ray boxed set July 24 for $79.95. You might remember that last summer NBC announced that it would be pulling its shows off iTunes because it wanted to saddle its videos with more restrictive Digital Rights Management (DRM) and be able to jack up its prices. Regardless of its motives, fans of NBC, Sci-Fi Channel, or Bravo shows who also had iPods and iPhones were out of luck.

But five months after the official end of the iTunes and NBC partnership, there is some hope on the horizon for the fans of at least two of NBC's Thursday-night comedies. The network has launched an iPhone and iPod Touch friendly version of its Web site featuring full episodes of two of its most popular shows, 'The Office' and '30 Rock,' with more to follow, we're sure.

Best of all, the episodes are free, unhindered by DRM, and completely lacking commercial interruption. Just don't exit Safari or you'll be forced to download the videos all over again. We got to plant our eyeballs on Pioneer's second-gen KURO plasma display (bottom center), along with all that other new gear Pioneer released today. While all by its lonesome the new flagship display is no doubt impressive, when stacked up against the competition it becomes quite clear that this new KURO is the one to beat.

Granted, this was Pioneer's own setup designed to make us believe precisely that, but we certainly did find the new display notably blacker than its predecessor, and quite a lot better than the competing offerings Pioneer had on display. The new KURO projector was also quite impressive, and we even got treated to the much-improved start times of Pioneer's new Blu-ray players.

Gallery: Pioneer KURO and friends hands-on

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Criterion Collection Coming to Blu-ray in October

The Criterion Collection's long-awaited HD debut -- delayed by that annoying format war -- finally has a date, as well as a list of the first movies getting a definitive release in 1080p. If that wasn't enough, try this bit on for size: They won't charge viewers extra for the privilege. That's right, according to the e-mail that went out to subscribers today, all Blu-ray releases will feature HD picture and sound (no word on what codecs, although we expect nothing but the best considering the company has been mastering and restoring all releases in HD for years now), all the supplemental content and a matching (unspecified) price to their standard DVD editions.

The complete e-mail and list of a dozen movies follows after the break, along with a note that The Last Emperor will also be released in its original theatrical version on both formats for $39.95, while Walkabout will be an all-new edition. Check out Criterion's message after the break. For quite some time, if you Googled "Greatest Living American" and hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" you'd be redirected to faux-pundit Stephen Colbert's page. Colbert achieved that status thanks to asking his legion of fans to "Google Bomb" his name with that term, posting it everywhere possible to increase his ratings. He no longer has that honor, thanks to another would-be who is bribing people with free software if they link to him instead, but Colbert has had an undeniable presence online, and now he's getting some official recognition from the Webby awards.

The Webbys Awards is an annual celebration of online culture; an Oscar for the Internet, if you will. Colbert is to be given the Webby Person of the Year award, granted, because of his skillful use (or exploitation) of the Web. In addition to Google Bombing, Colbert dominated his own Wikipedia page and managed to get thousands to donate at DonorsChoose.org.

Other winners this year include a lifetime achievement award for David Bowie, while Flickr's hardcore fanbase won the Community award. And, in the Weird category, the winner is our favorite LOLCat hub, I Can Has Cheezburger. It's no secret: the NFL Network isn't in nearly as many homes as the league had hoped when it launched in 2003. As it stands, the channel has only wiggled into 10 million abodes, whereas the NFL was estimating 32 million. At the network's third annual "upfront" presentation, commissioner Roger Goodell looked media buyers and advertisers in the eye and stated that it would "make the NFL Network a success." Not surprisingly, the biggest obstacle here is distribution, but it seems the league is adamant to find ways to broaden the channel's audience. We suppose the battles will live on, eh? You heard it right -- Hitachi's UltraThin 1.5 family that caused such a stir at CES is finally available for US consumers. Available in 32-, 37-, 42- and 47-inch sizes, the lot has been broken down into two distinct clans: the Director's Series (X) and Ultra Vision (V) models. Each member of the former comes with a 2-year warranty and a sticker ranging from $1,999 to $4,699, while the latter gets a 1-year warranty and price tags between $1,799 and $4,499. Curiously enough, it seems that several sets (the UT47X902, UT47V702, UT32A302/W, UT32V502/W, UT42V702 and UT37V702) may actually not yet be ready for shipping judging by their July to September availability dates, but we'll leave it to you to sort out the contradictions in Hitachi's press release with your dealer. You might remember Hulu, the video streaming service backed by most of the major networks, being touted as the legitimate answer to watching episodes of your favorite shows (in 6 pieces) on YouTube. Now in some sort of delicious, cosmic irony, Hulu has dragged the networks back to YouTube where it has created its own channel and is hosting clips from shows from Fox and NBC that can be seen in full on Hulu.

Right now, we only saw about 70 videos of clips from shows like '30 Rock,' 'Arrested Development,' 'Saturday Night Live,' 'Moment of Truth' and 'Family Guy.' We're still waiting for more, but it's a start in getting NBC clips, at least, back on our favorite online destinations . Next stop for NBC's return? iTunes, we hope. We can't say we're too terribly fond of purchasing movies on a proprietary set-top-box (à la VUDU), but for those with no real attachment to physical media, Apple's looking to hook you up. Aside from announcing that day-and-date DVD releases were coming to iTunes, Cupertino has also enabled its Apple TV to purchase full-length films; prior to today, users could only rent them for a window of time. Details are pretty scant at the moment, and we're not even sure if HD films can be purchased (or if a premium is added on), but feel free to fire up your box and let us know how it goes in comments below. The deal is said to allow Apple to offer a "broad slate of top-shelf films" day-and-date with home video releases -- a long time sticking point with brick-and-mortar interests who want to keep their early-release edge on digital downloads. The deal includes Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Lionsgate, New Line and more -- all of which are currently inked to deliver rentals through iTunes. MGM is not part of the deal. That puts Apple in direct competition with Wal-Mart's DVD empire after having pushed Wal-Mart from the top spot in music sales for the first two months of the year.

Update: It's official. New releases will cost $15 and catalog titles will cost $10 -- US only for now. Full press release after the break.
Watching 'CSI' is enough to make any tech enthusiast jealous, but have you ever wondered where they get all their wonderful toys? Well, much of it comes from a partnership with Microsoft. Some of the show's sets have been outfitted with modified Surface computers, and the stars will soon start carrying tablet PCs and UMPCs instead of notepads.

On Wednesday's episode, the star is Photosynth, a product from Microsoft's labs that lets the forensic scientists recreate the scene of a murder from hundreds of thumbnail photos taken at a dance in a school gymnasium. ABI Research has just confirmed feelings that we've had for months: Blu-ray just isn't going to dominate the market until prices sink down from the stratosphere and players emerge that are fully-featured. A new study from the previously mentioned firm has suggested that we still have "12 to 18 months" before the BD market really kicks into gear, and it specifies that "fully-featured" decks need to come in at $200 or below before the general public will consider coughing up the cash required to make the jump to high-definition media.

It's also noted that many are perfectly satisfied with the quality of DVD, and until prices make it manageable to switch, the outfit feels that huge chunks of consumers will simply stay put. Additionally, we're told that PS3s will "make up over 85-percent of the BD players in the field" during 2008, and we won't see Sony's console fall from the top until 2013 when the installed base of standalone decks / PC-based BD players overtake the installed base of PlayStation 3s. Yeah, you're hearing echoes on that last tidbit. Just when you though HANNSpree's idiotic and pointless LCD stylings couldn't be topped, here comes HANNSpree to do it again. The company just launched a 15-inch "Starlight Blue" display in the UK, comprised of some of the worst sci-fi-inspired curves known to man, in conjunction with a bit of pretty princess glitter to complete the atrocious effect. Should you happen to accidentally bring this XGA display home for the £99 ($197 US) asking price, we recommend a burning with fire.

If you're a living, breathing human being, it's safe to say you watch 'Lost.' But do you ever wonder just how "scientific" their science is? Popular Mechanics did, and spoke with its creators about it.

Apparently, show runners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse "agonize over the real-life science behind the sci-fi drama as much as they do over six-year plot arcs and love triangles."

Of course, it's not all hard science, but before the crew in Hawaii gets going, eight writers in Los Angeles dissect each episode like a polar bear cadaver. Script coordinator Greg Nations tracks down specific research, while the rest of the writer's room relies on their own knowledge and decades of engineering know-how passed down by Cuse's father.

Interestingly, though, Michio Kaku, author of Physics of the Impossible, thinks the 'Lost' creators are "using cutting-edge science to lay the groundwork for a transversible wormhole to another point in space and time" - specifically the Orchid station, which Lindelhof and Cuse have promised would be a key to the next few episodes. "They're amping up the energy to the point where space and time begin to tear, and the fabric begins to rip," says Kaku. "When the fabric of space and time begin to rip, things that we consider impossible become possible again."

Continue the geekout at PopMech. 'Round these parts, we expect most everywhere to own, or at least be familiar with, an HDTV. Still, there's a first time for everyone, and for folks just now looking to hop on in and see what this whole "high-definition" thing is all about, ExtremeTech's Joel Durham Jr. has a quick 'n dirty guide of things to do before tossing a set in your vehicle.

Granted, a few of the tips seem glaringly obvious, but really, buying a new (or first, in particular) HDTV isn't always a simple process. What's your size requirement? What's your budget? What technology do you prefer? Do you have the wiring scheme all planned out? Can you afford to pull another all-nighter? If you've been wondering where to start when thinking of bringing a new set into your crib, you should definitely give the read link a look -- at worse, you can say you're a seasoned veteran for already knowing the dos and don'ts.
With electronics showrooms full of seemingly nothing but flat-panel displays, it'll probably come as no surprise to you that penetration of high definition televisions has finally reached 25-percent. A 5.5 million-set buying spree ahead of the Superbowl last year pushed sets over the quarter mark. A big flat-panel was definitely the thing to have for the big game (as well as beer and chips and etc.), but would you believe that, by some accounts, only half of those with high-def sets actually have high-def programming being piped into them?

That's according to one recent ABI Research study, which found only 56-percent of those with HDTVs are subscribing to high-def programming packages. However, another study, by Magid & Associates, puts the mark at 70-percent, so it's safe to say that these numbers are perhaps a bit unreliable. If you believe the latter study, it also says that 18-percent of HD owners are connecting their sets to high-definition consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, meaning for many high-def gaming is a strong selling point.

What about the rest, who are seemingly bereft of HD content? Surely some are pulling in signals over the airwaves, but others apparently don't care; they just like the "the sleek and contemporary appearance" of newer TVs. We can't help but think they don't know what they're missing.

In yet another not-entirely-unexpected grasp at media censorship, the Russian government wants its tough anti-extremism laws to be applied to the Internet. The story is being reported by state newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta, and is fueling the fears of growing media censorship in the country.

The prosecutors office has proposed a legal amendment that would bring the Internet under the same rules as printed media, Vyacheslav Sizov, a top official at the prosecutor general's office told the paper.

Under current laws, newspapers deemed "in court" to have published extremist material can be shut down by the government. The new proposal demands that any site hosting extremist material be blocked by providers in Russia "within a month," said Sizov, or face similar repercussions.

Thus far, the Internet has been relatively free in Russia, where almost all television and many newspapers are under formal or unofficial government control.

"It is a worry whenever the government tries to change any law," Oleg Panfilov, director of the Centre of Journalism in Extreme Situations, told AFP. "It is difficult to find anyone who is not against extremism but it depends on how the law is used. The government uses (it) selectively."

You might recall that the news website www.gazeta.ru was warned for extremism last year after it wrote about cartoons that satirised the prophet Mohammed.

Makes the US media seem almost ... legitimate? Russia needs its own version of the Daily Show. Following up on the DAPs and BD-Live announcements, Samsung's seen fit to attach prices to its 750 series of LCD HDTVs and their "Touch of Color" frames. At the top end, the 750 ranges from 39.9- to 52-inch sizes, all with 1080p, 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (for picture clarity and vibrant colors), DLNA network access (connections to other home network devices) and 120Hz motion processing (smooth action and movement) for $2,599 - $3,499 when they hit shelves in May.

The 650s are already on shelves with 720p or 1080p variations from 19- 52-inch variations, sans-DLNA, but all models include Samsung's Infolink RSS service for news direct to your flat screen. Don't have Ethernet in your TV room? The Wireless LinkStick enables either series to pull down news without those pesky physical connections for $34.99.
