The long-awaited DASH car navigation devices will soon hit store shelves and the promise of shared, live traffic data will soon be in consumers hands -- or rather their cars, guiding them around traffic tie ups and obstacles that other DASH-using drivers have already encountered and relayed back through the live data system.

DASH Navigation's two-way navigation devices relay information via GPRS to and from a central computer that collects speed and location data from each user's car, then computes a live, up-to-the-minute picture of what the traffic situation is in a certain area. (GPRS is typically utilized by mobile phones to send and receive SMS messages and data for WAP browsers, a mobile phone version of an Internet browser.)

DASH goes well beyond the current traffic guidance systems already used by in-car GPS makers, which compute historical traffic data (such as average speeds and rush hour changes). Some GPS devices also receive an RDS-TMC (Radio Data System Traffic Message Channel), which in many metro areas collates live traffic conditions through the ClearChannel system. Typically an RDS-TMC receiver adds about $100 to the price of a GPS device. Also, the information over RDS-TMC requires lots of human input and interpretation. DASH's system is more automated.

The DASH Express device doesn't just receive traffic information, but also acts as a transmitter, sending out constant information about its own situation on the road. This means the more DASH Express units that are deployed in a certain region the better the traffic information will be. According to our friends over at Engadget, who have put the new DASH Express through its paces already, the device and the traffic monitoring system work exceptionally well.

Traffic conditions along the routes they were traveling were reflected in the actual driving experience. While many traffic information services are good at helping navigate main highways and thoroughfares, the DASH system also lends itself to making your way through local streets. As long as a few cars with the DASH Express are on the road in your area, you should get up-to-date information. Plus, the information you and fellow DASH-using drivers gather is saved and integrated into the historical traffic data. So, in a sense, this is a system that is constantly getting smarter.

The company says consumers should not be worried about being monitored on the road or tracked by authorities. All data gathered will be anonymized and aggregated, so "Big Brother" can't snag you if you happen to be speeding or driving erratically.

The DASH Express also comes with a live Internet connection to Yahoo! Local search. Plus, you can send address information from Microsoft Outlook or a Web browser straight to your device -- or even have someone else do it for you if you're already on the road. Also, when new maps come out, the device is automatically updated via the GPRS signal.

What's the downside? According to Engadget, it's the initial price of $399 plus the monthly $13 fee required to receive the traffic data and local information. Even with a two-year service commitment, which drops the monthly fee down to $10, it adds up to a $640 initial outlay.

DASH's traffic solution has been the talk of many tech types for more than a year now while the company has been conducting tests near its Sunnyvale, Calif., home base. Now that its really on the market it will be interesting to see how many people decide to spring for this capable new device.

The DASH Express is shipping this week.

From Engadget.

Related links:

Samsung P2
$250, samsungusa.com

Most so-called iPod-killers hardly live up to the name, much less Apple's digital audio player, but Samsung's P2 is pretty darn close. The size of a pack of Dentyne, and yet boasting a three-inch, 16:9 touchscreen, the P2 is a perfect alternative for iTunes haters, or just somebody who's got a lot of WMA or cell-phone-music-store-purchased tunes on their PCs. The elegant and kinetic onscreen interface is playful and surprisingly responsive, which makes browsing for everything from pictures and non-iTunes songs (Napster, Rhapsody, and the like) to TV shows purchased from Amazon Unbox and Wal-Mart a pleasurable cinch. Oh, and volume goes up to 11.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Samiljan

Don't Snub the Sony E-Reader -- We Actually Like It

Filed under: Advice, Editor's Picks, Gadget Head, Traveler, Man / Woman Who Has Everything, $500 and Under, Reviews, Holiday Gift Guide

Sure, the Amazon Kindle -- the electronic book reader with the easy-on-the-eyes, glare-free E-Ink screen -- may have stolen all the hype this holiday season, but it's sold out and going for $1,000 or more on eBay. So what's a gift giver who wants to wow an avid reader to do? Well, we've been playing around with both portable-book-reading devices and think that the Sony Reader is a fine alternative -- it's slim with a brushed-metal body, making it sleeker and sturdier in that quality-Sony-gadget kind-of-way than the cheesy-feeling plastic Kindle (plus, the Reader comes with a nice leather case). The Reader's screen is actually easier to read, and the pages turn faster than the Kindle. Sure, you need to sync the Reader with a computer to get new content, and only about 45,000 books are available from Sony Connect versus the Kindle's direct-to-device content downloads and 90,000-book library, but Sony's also only charging about $299 for the thing (about $100 less than the Kindle). Plus, Sony is offering $100 of free classics '(War and Peace,' 'Madame Bovary,' and the like) to anyone who buys the Reader before January 31st. Regardless, the traveler in your life will love that they can carry 160 books in this 9-ounce, 1/3-inch thick thing.

From Sony Style

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Samiljan

Just Tell Me What To Get: Digital Camera Under $300

Filed under: Cameras, Advice, Traveler, $500 and Under, Digital Camera, holiday gift, Holiday Gift Guide, Reviews

A reader writes: I'm getting ready to go on vacation for the holidays, and I want to bring along a small point-and-shoot digital camera. Thing is, I want the thing to be able to do a little bit of everything, so I'm willing to spend around $300. I'm mostly concerned about picture quality, fast movement, and lots of flexibility in terms of lighting situations as I'll be taking pictures both during the day and at night, inside and outside.

Hey reader: There are plenty of $300 point-and-shoot digital cameras out there, so we understand your confusion. Sounds like you need a feature-packed camera that won't break the wallet -- or the fanny pack -- for your vacation.

We recently got to play around with Panasonic's new Lumix DMC-FX33 camera, and despite the crazy confusing name, it's a great little unit. It's super small, has a big 2.5-inch screen and has plenty of scene modes for all your vacation-taking needs.

One thing that really sets this one apart is how easy it is to use. If you want to turn off the flash, just push a button. If you want to take a picture inside and don't want to think about the flash and ISO settings, just put the camera in auto mode and it will adjust everything for you. All that said, if you're a bit of a camera geek like we are, you can manually set just about everything.

What makes this camera stand out is Panasonic's use of 28mm Leica optics, which are some of the best lenses in the biz. Typically, Leica lenses are only available in much more expensive cameras.

Outside of that, this camera has all the standard features you would want in this price range. It does 8.1 megapixels, has a wide 28mm lens, uses inexpensive SD cards, does 4x optical zoom, has a macro setting (for close-up pictures of flowers and what-not), a widescreen video mode and this it's pretty quick when you need to take multiple pictures. Finally, for fashionistas, the Lumix comes in an assortment of colors: black, silver, blue, and the brown seen above.

Related Links:

What if your car's tires could do more than hug those turns, but also tell you when they might be about to blow? Researchers at Purdue University have created just such a round tube, full of sensors and a chip that they claim will warn drivers ahead of time if the rubber starts to shred. Hey, even a few seconds advance warning could save a big blowout from being a big car wreck, right?

Though they still haven't secured a patent on the new technology, researchers say race cars will be the first to use it. Of course, that would put an end to exciting videos like this.

In the meantime, drive safely.

HYPE CHECK: BURTON SLEEPER HOODIE
.

What it is: Burton's Sleeper Hoodie is designed for the busy air traveler, but should be a big hit with everyone from bands who spend weeks at a time tour buses, to those of us who like to catch a nap on the bus on our way to work. Inside the neck rests an inflatable neck pillow; blow it up, and you've got immediate, built-in head support. (Much better than resting your head on the corner between the seat and the window, much less the person next to you.) It's also got hidden compartments for your MP3 player (lower left), passport (inner left), and even your earplugs (it comes with a pair). It even has thumb holes in the sleeve cuffs for those with cold hands, and zippers under the armpits (with mesh in between) for when you get all hot and bothered (like during the spaghetti scene of 'Lady and the Tramp'). There's more: a light shield pulls down to block out the glare of the sun-like reading lights your neighbor refuses to turn off (if not fully block out those fluorescents lining the cabin wall), and a headphone port for wiring your music inside the shirt. It feels like something to add to your essential travel arsenal -- and since it looks and feels like a regular hoodie when disengaged, you can even where it when you get wherever it is you're going. As long as it's not Tahiti.

Why it's different: Most sweatshirts don't do anything other than zip up. This one does about everything except cook you breakfast.

What it costs: $100

What we like: For those that travel long distances, this thing is a lifesaver. It's incredibly versatile and feature-packed, and this sort of combination of technology and fashion is long overdue. The ability to adjust your temperature actually works in practice -- finally avoid sweaty armpits during boarding, and the thumb holes really do keep your palms warm, no matter how high they decide to crank the AC. The whole thing just feels very well thought-out and designed.

What we don't like: Rather than the wrap-around style neck pillow that they sell in airports, the inflatable pillow in the neck is more of a log-shaped affair. It still works - even without anything to lean against, you can just rest your head on either of your shoulders - but the full wrap-around action would have been even better. Also, while the design is great if you're into big graphics (we love the line-art airplane), it's perhaps not the most subtle thing in the world - this thing might not fly with the over-50 business set (pun intended).

Does it live up to the hype? Yes. We love it. It's an incredibly useful piece of gear for those of us that take long trips (or perhaps lots of short ones, requiring sporadic naps), and feels like it will last many, many hours of airtime. It's a heavy-duty sweatshirt, and for $100, you can't really argue with the comfort and peace of mind it give you - even when sandwiched between two fatsos (loudly eating sandwiches) on your flight from LA to London.

Gallery: Burton Sleeper Hoodie -- Up Close

Related Links:

Switched Reviews the Gibson Robotic Guitar
Is the Amazon Kindle Really the iPod of Books
Best Headphones for the Gym

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Shamoon

New T-Mobile Katalyst Handles Wi-Fi and VoIP

Filed under: Cell Phones, Traveler, Gift News, Holiday Gift Guide

The new Katalyst from Samsung is the latest phone to get paired with the Wi-Fi powered T-Mobile HotSpot@Home VoIP service. This slim slider has all the standard features you'd expect from a mid-range phone, Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera, instant messaging, media playback, and more.

The Katalyst also comes with a Wi-Fi radio, a necessity for working with T-Mobile's HotSpot@home service. HotSpot@home allows users who are in a Wi-Fi hotspot to switch from standard cellular calls to VoIP (Voice Over IP) service, which passes calls over the Internet and doesn't use up cell phone minutes. HotSpot@Home automatically switches over to Wi-Fi for unlimited free calls when at home or in a T-Mobile hotspot (like those at Starbucks).

The phone's included Wi-Fi also means owners can download documents, pictures, and surt the Web at broadband speeds whenever they're in a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Samsung Katalyst, also known as the SGH-t739, should be available immediately on the T-Mobile website for $79.99 with a two-year contract.

From T-Mobile

Related Links:

The writing is on the cave wall as a tried and true friend moves from city mainstay to relic of the Stone Age. Telephone giant AT&T will leave the pay phone market by the end of 2008, the company announced today. PR Newswire reports that the widespread use of cell phones and other communication devices has left AT&T with a declining market it no longer wishes to pursue. The phasing out of public pay phones and phones contracted out to correctional facilities will begin immediately and be limited to AT&T's thirteen state service area. Verizon, meanwhile, continues to offer pay phone service in 33 out of 50 states.

The move by AT&T, though, follows a general trend in the shrinking pay phone market. BellSouth Corporation, an AT&T acquisition in 2006, halted pay phone service in its nine state area in 2001. Indeed, today there are only about 1 million public pay phones in the United States, compared to 2.8 million in 1998. It is expected, however, that independent providers will pick up a portion of AT&T's business. In its announcement, the company assured customers that it will honor all existing contracts over the next year, while publicizing alternative providers and service options.

As sentimental as we can get about the passing of an era into a new, annoying age in which even nine year-olds have a CrackBerry and Bluetooth headset attached to the dome, we realize that it's true: All good things must come to an end, especially when we're talking wireless.

From PR Newswire Via MarketWatch (AOL Money & Finance)

Gallery: Public Phones and Phone Booths of the World

Related Links:

Anybody with a lot of gadgets has a lot of cables, which can get tangled and unsightly without too much effort. The clutter-averse gadget head or neat-freak in your life will find the ingeniously-designed Cable Turtles to be useful. The doughnut-shaped rubber Cable Turtles flip inside out to reveal a central pole that is used to wrap your power cord around. When you're done wrapping, you just flip the cover back over and presto, the cable is safely tucked away for storage, or significantly shortened, if you just want less cord clutter. Since they start at $9 (for the smallest model), Cable Turtles are an excellent stocking stuffer.

Hype Check: Amazon Kindle

Last week, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the Kindle, a new electronic book reader that has quickly become one of the hottest gifts of the holiday season (in fact, the device's first run sold out in a mere 5 and a half hours!). We got our hands on one and have been busy browsing, buying, downloading and reading e-books, -magazines, -newspapers, and blogs for the past week so we could report our findings back to you. But is the Amazon Kindle really the iPod of books? Will this new instantly-iconic gadget make a book-lover or info-hound in your life happy this year? Read on to see what found.

What it is: The first electronic book-reading device from Amazon.com, which lets you read your choice of more than 90,000 books, as well as dozens of magazines, newspapers, and blogs, on a 6-inch sized screen. Like the recently upgraded Sony Reader, the Amazon Kindle uses E-Ink, a new type of display that has eschews the typical LCD screen's harsh backlight for a glare-free, book-like experience.

How it works: The Kindle has built-in high-speed 3G network access, so it lets you browse for and download books directly into the device, either by scrolling through genre categories and lists or by searching by author or title (using the included QWERTY keyboard). Book downloads take less than a minute, while newspaper, magazine, and blog subscriptions are downloaded automatically as soon as something new is published. As for reading, you click on the title of a book or article you want to read, then scroll through pages by pressing "next" and "back" buttons on the right and left sides, respectively, of the screen. Maneuvering around content is easy enough since books, magazines, and newspapers are divided into easy to scan chapters, sections, and headlines. Text size can be adjusted to one of six different settings.

Why it's different: E-readers have a bad name because the versions that came out in the late '90s irritated the eyes and never really took off, but the Kindle is part of the new generation of e-readers that uses easy-on-the-eyes E-Ink. The real differentiator, though, for the Kindle, is its ability to let you browse for and download content directly into the device (using a cell phone network, no less). And you just use the same Amazon account you use to buy books and other items on your desktop, so it's oddly reminiscent of that other all-encompassing e-tailer eco-system, iTunes. (The Kindle's wireless service, by the way, is free.) Also, unlike other e-readers, the Kindle is the first to get real newspapers (New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Le Monde), magazines (Time, Atlantic Monthly, Reader's Digest), and even blogs into the e-edition mix.

What we like: Downloads of books are fast (usually around a minute per title). You can try a sample out before you buy for free. Prices for new hardcovers are often more than half what you'd pay for a physical book (about $9.99 a pop). Adjustable text sizes means young and old alike will be able to embrace the future with this thing. The "next" [page] button runs two-thirds of the length of the Kindle's right side, meaning don't have to fumble for the right button to turn a page. E-Ink is truly readable. And, if you don't know what a word means, you can just look it up using the included dictionary! (You can also look up topics with the built-in Wikipedia entries).

What we don't: If you're a big browser and shopper, you'll probably spend more time looking for new books and wearing the battery down than reading. (We got only about a day and a half of battery life with heavy browsing and shopping, but about six days with occasionally 10-15 minute reads and the thing otherwise just lying in our backpack.) Even though it offers 90,000 books, the Kindle Bookstore was surprisingly lacking in many titles we wanted, including anything but the latest book by Jonathan Franzen, travel guides, graphic novels, and even certain new translations of Russian novels we were in hot pursuit for!. Yes, you can basically get the New York Times bestseller list and lots of intriguing and obscure fare, but the Kindle bookstore is far from comprehensive - for now. And we fully expect more than the handful of magazines and newspapers to be offered in the near future. And what's with charging 99 cents to read otherwise free blogs?

Should you get the Sony Reader or the Kindle? Which one is better and how are they different? Well, the Sony Reader is by far the better designed gadget from a looks and heft perspective - it's about half as thin, about three ounces thinner, and comes in a much more attractive leather case. It also offers a screen that we found to be clearer, a silver body that felt solid versus the Kindle's relatively cheap white plastic body, and faster page-turning. But the Sony Reader doesn't have any of the wireless capability that lets you shop on the fly - you have to buy your eBooks on your computer first and then transfer them manually via USB to the Reader. The Reader is also less expensive. We recommend the Reader to anyone who prefers long-form books over magazines, newspapers and up-to-the-minute news stories - it's simply a more pleasurable experience to read with and you can find plenty of books on the Sony Connect store. But anyone who likes their newspapers and magazines as much as they like their books will want the Kindle, without a doubt.

Does the Kindle live up to the hype? Ultimately, yes. We've been using the Kindle for a little over a week now and we have been more or less blown away. We spent almost a whole night downloading books, blogs, newspaper articles and browsing for titles - pretty much the same way we spent all night loading up our iPods with iTunes the first time we gave it a spin. The truth is, this device is a Godsend to anyone who likes daily newspapers or magazines and doesn't want to carry them all around, or anybody who simply likes to read several books at once. And truthfully, we found the newspaper reading experience on the Kindle to be far superior to both real newspapers and newspaper headlines on the Web - the Kindle is lighter than a PC, less awkward to hold than a newspaper (and yet just as portable), and offers the easiest way to scroll through to the articles you actually want to read. It also offers some hope to the increasingly beleaguered print newspaper and magazine industries, not to mention one of the first ways to actually monetize a blog via readers. (Yes, we complained about having to pay for blogs above, but honestly, it's great to be able to catch up on your favorite Internet news sources while on a plane or somewhere else where there's no Internet connection - a convenience we're happy to pay 99 cents a month for!)

Is this a good gift? Since it doesn't require a computer for downloading and the wireless service is included in the price, most definitely yes. The book lover and info-hound in your life will love you for it!

Price and where to get it: $399, from Amazon.

Unfortunately, going to the gym is such a drag that the only way to make time pass (and exercise more bearable) is to blast some tunes while we work out. Unfortunately, many of the headphones we like to wear on the street (because they're stylish), at home (because they're audiophile-quality), or while we travel (because they block out airplane cabin noise) just don't cut it on the treadmill. Headphones have a tendency to fall off our heads while we jog, for example, or just hurt out ears. But have no fear: We put five highly-touted, gym-friendly headphones to the test by taking them with us on some recent workouts. Here's what we found.

H2O Sport Headphones

The only over-the-ear pair of headphones we tested, the H2O Sport is a pretty good option for budget-conscious athletes: For 30 bucks, these things actually provide decent bass response and get plenty loud. The neckwrap helps keep the headphones in place while you get your sweat on, and the coiled cord conveniently retracts to three feet (six feet when extended). That said, the plastic construction is a bit chintzy, and the cord feels like it might rip if you tug it too hard. The phones are a bit bulky and feel like they may give out after a year or so, but until then, they'll definitely get the job done whle you work out.

Audio-Technica is known for making audiophile-approved products at reasonable prices. Now, noise-canceling headphones can run high, price-wise (like, $300), but Audio-Technica's ATH-ANC7 Noise Canceling Headphones can be had for as little as $120 . And the good news is your frequent-flier audio-buff, uncle (or whomever) will really appreciate the sound these babies can make (and the sound they can hide while, say, in a noisy airplane cabin).

These bad boys are even surprisingly compact, for over-the-ear cans. The cable detaches and the 'phones fold flat for easy storage in the included carrying case. Meanwhile, a=a single AAA battery will keep the active noise cancellation technology running for 40 hours.

Sensors detect and remove 85 percent background noise such as engine drones on a plane, background chatter at the office, or even the sound of hyper ctive children in your living room. You can even ditch the cable and use them to cancel out sound without plugging them into an iPod or portable DVD player.

From Audio-Technica

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Terrence O'Brien

Panasonic Toughbooks

Filed under: Computers, Traveler, $5000 and Under, Holiday Gift Guide

If your shopping list includes a frequent traveler who needs a new laptop and who also happens to be a bit of a klutz, consider the just-released Panasonic Toughbook 7 series. Toughbooks are rugged notebooks built to withstand all of the tortures the average person could throw at them. Knock them off a table, right on the LCD, and it wont crack. Spill your morning coffee in them and the darn things survive.

They even comes in three different flavors, all of which start with the same battery-sipping but powerful Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, magnesium alloy casing, shock mounted hard drive, and 3G cellular data radio (so users can surf the Web at high-speeds).

The Y7 (starts at $2,400) is the 14-inch standard bearer, with a five hour battery life. The W7 is the ultra portable 12-inch laptop that weighs in under seven pounds, and has a seven hour battery life, making it ideal for the always-mobile and always-connected on your shopping list, as long as you don't mind dropping a minimum of $2,100 on them. Then there is the T7, a rugged tablet that comes in at the same price as the W7. The T7 drops the built in optical drive (for CDs and DVDs) of the Y7 and W7, adds a touch screen, and gets its battery life up to a jaw dropping nine hours.

Unless someone backs up over these with their SUV, the Toughbooks should be pretty indestructible -- even for the biggest of klutzes.

It's a backpack. It's a roller. It's a carry-on. it's a transformer! It's the coolest laptop backpack we've seen in some time, and any traveler who has spent more than a couple hours in an airport will love you for this one. The Trek Pack Plus looks like a backpack -- and it is. But it's also a rolling carry-on for those times when lugging things around on one's back is just too much to handle. It has all the comfort features that Swiss Army has brought to backpacks, including a laptop sleeve, lumbar support, and compression straps. But wait - there's more! This beast also has a detachable daypack that can be worn completely separate while your traveler is... well, traveling.

From Swiss Army

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Fruhlinger

ezGear ezSkin for iPod Touch

Filed under: Traveler, $50 and Under, Holiday Gift Guide

So the travel bug in your life has one of those new iPod Touches and they love it. They're also scratching the poor thing to near death in that carry-on bag filled with change and keys. To save them some sanity, put the ezSkin on their iPod. Not only will this silicon wrap keep their iPod from getting scratched and dented during all that travel, it also won't add much bulk -- a key when one has to deal with carry-on limitations. To add to the whole package, the ezSkin also sports a belt clip for workouts at those dangerous, stinky hotel gyms.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Fruhlinger
