Not content keeping your floor clean, your gutters empty and your Grandma happy on Mother's Day, Roomba creator iRobot unveiled a 3-D camera for robots at this month's RoboBusiness convention. The upshot: Robots can now gauge depth with unparalleled precision, which means they'll have that much better aim when SkyNet eventually becomes conscious.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ben Chertoff

Hype Check: Dyson DC24 Vacuum Cleaner

Filed under: Advice, Editor's Picks, Reviews

Dyson D24 Vacuum Cleaner

What it is: Even those of you who wouldn't consider yourselves vacuum cleaner fetishists have heard of Dyson's line -- you know, the one you see advertised on TV, that promises to change your (vacuuming) life. Well, the ambitious designers at Dyson have released their latest, greatest, and, quite possibly, lightest -- the D24 -- and it's a significant improvement over past Dyson vacuums. This is the first time the innovative ball has been used in a Dyson model this light and compact. It's less than four feet tall and a foot wide, and weighs just under 12 pounds, which makes it easy to move and maneuver from room to room (or up a few flights of stairs).

Why it's different: Though generally rather awesome, past Dyson vacuum cleaners have suffered from being too heavy and bulky, with buttons hidden in very hard-to-reach (and unintuitive places). The new DC-24 is only 11.6 pounds -- much more powerful than a Dustbuster-style vac, yet far smaller and more maneuverable than a typical upright vacuum cleaner.

What we like: The DC24 uses Dyson's patented new Ball tech -- essentially, a big orange ball that serves as the rolling mechanism for the unit. It's rather revolutionary in terms of the mobility and turning radius: moving a vacuum around your floor has never been this fun. While traditional vacuum cleaners feel like they're stuck on invisible tracks, this one turns and pivots around any household with ease, effortlessly gliding across the floor. Like all Dyson vacs, the DC24 really does live up to the claims of controlled suction - it works on all surfaces with virtually the same suction power. We really noticed the difference when we moved from one surface to another -- the DC24 didn't struggle or even seem like it was adjusting. The canister is super easy to empty (though it fills up very fast, which probably says something about the cleanliness of our floors than anything else). The overall body is small and compact, so if you're not into displaying the well designed vacuum, you can easily store in small places.

What we don't like: The handheld wand -- while improved over previous Dyson iterations -- is still a bit of a struggle to use. The hose conveniently collapses back into its original form when you're not cleaning with it, but is just sorta painful to actually use -- it's not as flexible as we would have liked, and doesn't work symbiotically with the rest of the unit. This might be less of an issue if there was some sort of "lock mode" that prevented the vacuum from moving around, of if the wand were made of a more lightweight, flexible material.

What it costs: $399

Does it live up to the hype? Dyson's DC24 is an awesome vacuum cleaner. It makes cleaning your home something to look forward to (not even just for the anal-retentive among us), and improves significantly upon Dyson's already solid foundation. It's cheaper than other Dyson models by $100, but it's still comes in at a cool four bills -- a bit out of the average vacuum cleaner budget. But the thing comes with lifetime HEPA and washable filters (read: no bags to buy, ever), and a five-year warranty, looks great, feels great, and sucks real hard (in a good way). If you've got the cash, you won't be disappointed.

Be careful what you leave in a voicemail: It might end up on the Switched Show (podcast, direct link), via YouTube and just about every major TV and radio outlet in the nation. We discuss implications of privacy in a digital world -- from warrantless searches of Blackberry e-mail in-boxes to the unfortunate case of an angry phone message turned YouTube phenomena.
The first reviews of Apple's skinny and sexy MacBook Air are in. The laptop is less than two-tenths-of-an-inch thick, but such slimness comes at a price ($1800-$3000). Even that price, the Air's minimalist hardware will make the Air a poor choice for no-compromise users, according to the first reviews posted today (the Air itself won't be in stores for another two weeks).

Edward C Baig from USA Today loves the size and weight of the thing, but has a number of complaints about the hardware shortcomings, including comparatively short non-replaceable battery's life, the missing internal DVD drive, and the lack of many common ports business users might need to hook their machines up to external displays or devices.

Newsweek's Steven Levy echoes many of the same complaints as Baig, but praises the Air's low temperatures when running and indicates that it's so small and light you'll never wonder whether you should take it with you because there's really no reason not to. Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal says much the same thing, indicating he loves the design but spends plenty of paragraphs describing its shortcomings -- the non-removable battery, the paltry one USB port, and the missing DVD drive that makes this impractical for those who like to pack a few discs for a long flight. Still, usual-Apple-lover Mossberg says "the result is a beautiful, amazingly thin computer, but one whose unusual trade-offs may turn off some frequent travelers."

So, is the $1,799 (and up) MacBook Air for you? Well, are you planning on using it as your only computer or will it be a second (or third) one just for trips and mobile computing? It seems it's just not quite up to the task of being your sole, go-to computing device. If you plan to get one, you should probably make it your second computer.

The Air is sexy, but just like those impractical roadsters a lot of people own but keep in the garage except on sunny afternoons, it's not really meant to be your only means of getting about.

From Engadget, USA Today, Newsweek, and Wall Street Journal

Related Links:

Your heroes at Switched came away impressed after our hands-on with Philips' latest high definition (HD) LCD television sets last night. The new sets comprise Philips' 2008 "Design Collection", featuring round-edges surrounded by acrylic framing in all TVs ranging from 19 to 52 inches (diagonal). Forgive us for jumping to the dessert course of the meal, but we think it best to go into detail about the Ultimate Dream TV, the top-of-the-line product from Philip's new 7000 Series that is being hailed as a winner of the 2008 CEA Innovations Award for Design and Engineering.

Continue reading Hands-On With Philips' New Dream HD LCD TV

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Alon Avdi

Home Theater in One Piece (ok, two): Boston Acoustics TV2

Filed under: Audio/Video, Editor's Picks, TV, Switched Video, Video Junkie, Reviews, Holiday Gift Guide

Surround sound home theater systems sound awesome, but all those wires and speakers can clutter a small room.
Sure, the Amazon Kindle -- the electronic book reader with the easy-on-the-eyes, glare-free E-Ink screen -- may have stolen all the hype this holiday season, but it's sold out and going for $1,000 or more on eBay. So what's a gift giver who wants to wow an avid reader to do? Well, we've been playing around with both portable-book-reading devices and think that the Sony Reader is a fine alternative -- it's slim with a brushed-metal body, making it sleeker and sturdier in that quality-Sony-gadget kind-of-way than the cheesy-feeling plastic Kindle (plus, the Reader comes with a nice leather case). The Reader's screen is actually easier to read, and the pages turn faster than the Kindle. Sure, you need to sync the Reader with a computer to get new content, and only about 45,000 books are available from Sony Connect versus the Kindle's direct-to-device content downloads and 90,000-book library, but Sony's also only charging about $299 for the thing (about $100 less than the Kindle). Plus, Sony is offering $100 of free classics '(War and Peace,' 'Madame Bovary,' and the like) to anyone who buys the Reader before January 31st. Regardless, the traveler in your life will love that they can carry 160 books in this 9-ounce, 1/3-inch thick thing.

From Sony Style

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Samiljan

Dell Goes Sexy With New All-in-One Computer

Filed under: Computers, Domestic God / Goddess, $5000 and Under, Features, Reviews, Laptops, Holiday Gift Guide, desktops

"Give in to the power of the tea," the male model, Hansel, whispered as he seduced the overcome reporter in the epic comedy, Zoolander. That's what we thought of as we entered Armani/Casa, an ultra-hip interior design locale in SoHo where fashionistas shop for their postmodern couches and Eastern-influenced coffee tables. It wasn't a home makeover mission that brought us to Never Neverland, however, as we were there to preview Dell's XPS One, the newest all-in-one home computer, which came out on November 19th and is the latest entry in the growing area of stylish, all-in-one computers.

Picking our way through the hotly attired models and Dell executives that dotted the sleek Armani/Casa homescape, we began to understand the nature of this particular computing beast... Home computing is undergoing a transformation in character, style or that je ne sais quoi these days, and the XPS One is Dell's attempt to get sexy. And make no mistake, the folks at Dell will sell their stock to Apple before letting the competition's Gateway One and the Sony Vaio L Series overshadow their own product's libido.

All black, the machine is comprised of a 20-inch, high-definition widescreen monitor that houses the computer itself, with just one cable to plug in. The only other components are a wireless mouse and an old-school infrared wireless keyboard that triumphs over the inconsistent Bluetooth keyboards from former XPS models. In addition, the XPS boasts a built-in TV tuner, whereas most PC models of this size and type, including the Gateway One, have an external tuner or none at all, like the Sony Vaio L Series.

A couple of things that we really liked were the motion sensors that, when triggered, light up the media keys and a half-circle of blue light that illuminates the slot-loading drive on the lower, right hand corner of the monitor. We also dug the great speakers that come stock with every XPS as well as the option to include a Blu-ray drive (as long as you're willing to pay more). While the cheapest XPS One goes for $1,499, the version with all of the bells and whistles maxes out at $2,399.

Overall, this computer seems to have the it sexy factor that Dell wanted to develop. Whether you're an artiste whose closet includes clothing in black or black, or just a regular consumer looking for a home computer that looks smokin' and futuristic while doing it all without the complications, this is the all-in-one product for you.

The only downside is that the models we saw at Armani/Casa are not offered with the XPS at this time.

Gallery: Dell XPS One

Related Links:

Hype Check: Gibson Robot Guitar

On December 7, guitar enthusiasts around the nation will be able to get their callused hands on the Gibson Robot Guitar, a first-of-its-kind, self-tuning instrument packed with a computer and motorized tuners. This special edition Les Paul will initially only be available in limited quantities -- 10 guitars for each of 400 retailers across the nation.

What it does: The Robot Guitar has a built-in tuner, a CPU, and motorized tuners that turn to increase or decrease the pitch of each string individually until the whole guitar is in tune. The on board computer is also used to switch from standard tuning (EADGBe) to a host of alternate tunings and even set intonation.

What we like: The preset alternate tunings such as DADGAD and Open D (DADF#AD) are great for the forgetful and impatient. The Robot Guitar switches to alternate tunings much quicker than a person could, and the user can even change the presets for custom tunings, in case your playing style is less Son House and more Sonic Youth. And the intonation mode is a real cash saver. The computer guides you through adjusting the string saddles until you have perfect intonation, which guarantees pitch-perfect playing along the entire neck of the guitar. (With standard guitars, this adjustment is performed by a professional in a repair shop, which means parting ways with your instrument for a period of time and coughing up about $50 for the service.)

Then there is the paint job, a gorgeous coat of super glossy "silver burst" that goes from a subtle silver in the center to a beautiful, bright blue around the edges. This particular color was designed specifically for the Robot Guitar and is sadly not available on any other instrument from Gibson, but we hope thischanges soon. Most importantly, this ax maintains that classic Les Paul tone -- thick, buttery, and smooth. In fact, it sounds so good, it almost feels like cheating. Even a novice can sound like Jimmy Page with a Les Paul strapped on.

What we don't: There isn't much to dislike about this thing. The tuner occasionally had trouble picking out the last string or two when tuning, which slowed down the process, and if the guitar is just slightly out of tune, it's actually faster to adjust by hand in most cases. Our biggest worry with the device is the construction. The guitar feels solid enough, but pulling out and pushing back the tuning knobs for manual adjustment made us a little nervous. Repairing the guitar is also bound to be an expensive proposition should the tuner, computer, or motors fail. You won't be able to take this to your local music shop for repairs.

Does it live up to the hype: Surprisingly enough, yes. When we first heard about this thing we were skeptical -- a guitar that tunes itself comes off as a bit of an unnecessary novelty, but Gibson's newest innovation proved its usefulness to us. Not to mention that playing 'War Pigs' on any Les Paul is a wonderfully satisfying experience.

Price and where to get it: $2,499 at select Gibson retailers across the nation. You can find the nearest one here.

Related Links:

After nine months of pregnancy and a baby shower, you've probably acquired a lot of stuff. Now that the baby's here, what do you really need and what can you stuff back in the closet or sell on eBay? Based on our own experiences with our own young babies, here are a few things we've think you won't want to live without. (And if you've got a Mom -- or a new baby -- on your gift list this holiday, read on).

Prince Lionheart Slumber Bear

Sleep -- talk to any new mother and the subject is bound to come up. How is the baby sleeping? How are you sleeping? And most importantly, how do you get the baby to actually go to sleep? With this age-old question comes a reliable answer in the form of the $27 Prince Lionheart Slumber Bear. Though it looks like a typical stuffed bear swaddled in pink, blue or beige pajamas, the Prince Lionheart Slumber Bear is stuffed with an audio box that plays actual recordings of intra-uterine womb sounds. Just fasten the bear onto the crib bars with the included hook and straps, and the baby will recognize these ambient white-noise-like sounds and be immediately lulled to sleep. With a five-minute shut-off timer to save batteries, as well as motion and sound sensors to reactivate the recording when your little one wakes up, this bear is a must-have for frustrated mommies who could use more time to themselves. The audio box is removeable, and can also attach to a stroller or car seat, for example.

Hype Check: Amazon Kindle

Last week, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the Kindle, a new electronic book reader that has quickly become one of the hottest gifts of the holiday season (in fact, the device's first run sold out in a mere 5 and a half hours!). We got our hands on one and have been busy browsing, buying, downloading and reading e-books, -magazines, -newspapers, and blogs for the past week so we could report our findings back to you. But is the Amazon Kindle really the iPod of books? Will this new instantly-iconic gadget make a book-lover or info-hound in your life happy this year? Read on to see what found.

What it is: The first electronic book-reading device from Amazon.com, which lets you read your choice of more than 90,000 books, as well as dozens of magazines, newspapers, and blogs, on a 6-inch sized screen. Like the recently upgraded Sony Reader, the Amazon Kindle uses E-Ink, a new type of display that has eschews the typical LCD screen's harsh backlight for a glare-free, book-like experience.

How it works: The Kindle has built-in high-speed 3G network access, so it lets you browse for and download books directly into the device, either by scrolling through genre categories and lists or by searching by author or title (using the included QWERTY keyboard). Book downloads take less than a minute, while newspaper, magazine, and blog subscriptions are downloaded automatically as soon as something new is published. As for reading, you click on the title of a book or article you want to read, then scroll through pages by pressing "next" and "back" buttons on the right and left sides, respectively, of the screen. Maneuvering around content is easy enough since books, magazines, and newspapers are divided into easy to scan chapters, sections, and headlines. Text size can be adjusted to one of six different settings.

Why it's different: E-readers have a bad name because the versions that came out in the late '90s irritated the eyes and never really took off, but the Kindle is part of the new generation of e-readers that uses easy-on-the-eyes E-Ink. The real differentiator, though, for the Kindle, is its ability to let you browse for and download content directly into the device (using a cell phone network, no less). And you just use the same Amazon account you use to buy books and other items on your desktop, so it's oddly reminiscent of that other all-encompassing e-tailer eco-system, iTunes. (The Kindle's wireless service, by the way, is free.) Also, unlike other e-readers, the Kindle is the first to get real newspapers (New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Le Monde), magazines (Time, Atlantic Monthly, Reader's Digest), and even blogs into the e-edition mix.

What we like: Downloads of books are fast (usually around a minute per title). You can try a sample out before you buy for free. Prices for new hardcovers are often more than half what you'd pay for a physical book (about $9.99 a pop). Adjustable text sizes means young and old alike will be able to embrace the future with this thing. The "next" [page] button runs two-thirds of the length of the Kindle's right side, meaning don't have to fumble for the right button to turn a page. E-Ink is truly readable. And, if you don't know what a word means, you can just look it up using the included dictionary! (You can also look up topics with the built-in Wikipedia entries).

What we don't: If you're a big browser and shopper, you'll probably spend more time looking for new books and wearing the battery down than reading. (We got only about a day and a half of battery life with heavy browsing and shopping, but about six days with occasionally 10-15 minute reads and the thing otherwise just lying in our backpack.) Even though it offers 90,000 books, the Kindle Bookstore was surprisingly lacking in many titles we wanted, including anything but the latest book by Jonathan Franzen, travel guides, graphic novels, and even certain new translations of Russian novels we were in hot pursuit for!. Yes, you can basically get the New York Times bestseller list and lots of intriguing and obscure fare, but the Kindle bookstore is far from comprehensive - for now. And we fully expect more than the handful of magazines and newspapers to be offered in the near future. And what's with charging 99 cents to read otherwise free blogs?

Should you get the Sony Reader or the Kindle? Which one is better and how are they different? Well, the Sony Reader is by far the better designed gadget from a looks and heft perspective - it's about half as thin, about three ounces thinner, and comes in a much more attractive leather case. It also offers a screen that we found to be clearer, a silver body that felt solid versus the Kindle's relatively cheap white plastic body, and faster page-turning. But the Sony Reader doesn't have any of the wireless capability that lets you shop on the fly - you have to buy your eBooks on your computer first and then transfer them manually via USB to the Reader. The Reader is also less expensive. We recommend the Reader to anyone who prefers long-form books over magazines, newspapers and up-to-the-minute news stories - it's simply a more pleasurable experience to read with and you can find plenty of books on the Sony Connect store. But anyone who likes their newspapers and magazines as much as they like their books will want the Kindle, without a doubt.

Does the Kindle live up to the hype? Ultimately, yes. We've been using the Kindle for a little over a week now and we have been more or less blown away. We spent almost a whole night downloading books, blogs, newspaper articles and browsing for titles - pretty much the same way we spent all night loading up our iPods with iTunes the first time we gave it a spin. The truth is, this device is a Godsend to anyone who likes daily newspapers or magazines and doesn't want to carry them all around, or anybody who simply likes to read several books at once. And truthfully, we found the newspaper reading experience on the Kindle to be far superior to both real newspapers and newspaper headlines on the Web - the Kindle is lighter than a PC, less awkward to hold than a newspaper (and yet just as portable), and offers the easiest way to scroll through to the articles you actually want to read. It also offers some hope to the increasingly beleaguered print newspaper and magazine industries, not to mention one of the first ways to actually monetize a blog via readers. (Yes, we complained about having to pay for blogs above, but honestly, it's great to be able to catch up on your favorite Internet news sources while on a plane or somewhere else where there's no Internet connection - a convenience we're happy to pay 99 cents a month for!)

Is this a good gift? Since it doesn't require a computer for downloading and the wireless service is included in the price, most definitely yes. The book lover and info-hound in your life will love you for it!

Price and where to get it: $399, from Amazon.

Unfortunately, going to the gym is such a drag that the only way to make time pass (and exercise more bearable) is to blast some tunes while we work out. Unfortunately, many of the headphones we like to wear on the street (because they're stylish), at home (because they're audiophile-quality), or while we travel (because they block out airplane cabin noise) just don't cut it on the treadmill. Headphones have a tendency to fall off our heads while we jog, for example, or just hurt out ears. But have no fear: We put five highly-touted, gym-friendly headphones to the test by taking them with us on some recent workouts. Here's what we found.

H2O Sport Headphones

The only over-the-ear pair of headphones we tested, the H2O Sport is a pretty good option for budget-conscious athletes: For 30 bucks, these things actually provide decent bass response and get plenty loud. The neckwrap helps keep the headphones in place while you get your sweat on, and the coiled cord conveniently retracts to three feet (six feet when extended). That said, the plastic construction is a bit chintzy, and the cord feels like it might rip if you tug it too hard. The phones are a bit bulky and feel like they may give out after a year or so, but until then, they'll definitely get the job done whle you work out.
Unfortunately, 'affordable' can mean very different things to different people. So, we've put together two excellent home theater set-ups for two different budgets, both of which are still firmly planted in the realm of reality. In other words, you probably won't need a winning lottery ticket to afford the payments on them.

For the budget-conscious buyer:

VIZIO VX37L 37-inch LCD TV
At just $799 for a top-notch LCD, you really can't beat VIZIO. Though you might not be familiar with the name, the company has been making some noise lately for offering high-quality sets priced with real people in mind. On this LCD, you get two HDMI inputs for connecting video sources with just one cable for picture and sound -- a nice feature at such a low price. The resolution tops out at 720p, but at this size that's all you'll need for HDTV broadcasts, DVDs and gaming. (More on 720p versus 1080p here.)

Panasonic SC-PT950 Wireless Home Theater
When putting together a home theater, hardcore audiophiles will tell you to handpick your components and speakers separately. But, that quickly gets expensive and time-consuming. All-in-one systems, or HTIBs (Home Theater In a Box), on the other hand, give you everything you need in one convenient package - like this Panasonic kit, which includes a receiver, amplifier, five-disc DVD changer and speakers. In addition to an included iPod dock and the ability to up-convert DVDs to true 1080p resolution, the $440 system also boasts the convenience and easy setup of a wireless back speaker.

TOTAL: $1,240

Is the world's first ultrasound toothbrush all that? Read this to find out:

What it is: Ultreo claims the Ultrasound is the first major innovation in electric-toothbrush technology since Sonicare came out roughly 15 years ago. It uses -- appropriately enough -- ultrasound technology to clean your teeth (a super high-pitched form of sound pressure, and yes, that's the same technology used to check out the sex of your unborn baby).

Why it's different: The Ultreo uses roughly four million cycles of ultrasound energy to create bubbles that expand and contract -- this movement, combined with regular bristle-action, helps remove the tiny chunks of Swedish fish and/or meatballs that get stuck in those hidden spots between your teeth.

Where you can get it: At the moment, Ultreo is available online from Ultreo's website -- it'll eventually make its way to retail stores and dentist's offices, making it kind of a rarefied gift for someone who loves their teeth.

Price: Ultreo will set you back $149.99, but snag a discount code from your dentist to save a few bucks.

What we like: Immediately after you finish brushing, a distinct feeling of (quite literal) squeaky-clean sets in; your teeth actually feel as if they've been buffed and polished, and the squeak when you rub your finger across them is actually audible (though not visible). The unit itself feels solid and well-built, and the brush-head seems seems more durable than those of other premium toothbrushes.

What we don't like: Hard to find anything, other than the high price. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, per se, the Ultreo doesn't produce quite as much friction as other high-end electric toothbrushes. This may come as something of a shock to those used to, say, the Sonicare's full-on tooth-and-gum massage. The Ultreo's lighter touch is a result of cleaning being accomplished through ultrasound waves, which you don't actually feel.

Does it live up to the hype? While it will be tough to say how well the Ultreo actually works until our next dentist appointment, initial impressions are definitely positive. It feels like a great way to clean those pearlies, and the lack of friction is likely to be easy on the gums, for those who tend to otherwise brush too hard.

Related Links:

It's not ALL good news of course as no game is perfect, but here's what the critics say:

For those of us with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), organization is often key. We develop special systems for tracking to-do's and routinely reorganize our CD collections just to make sure everything is in order: alphabetical order by artist, then chronological by release date. Some of the more extreme amongst us may even build databases and spreadsheets to track things like wines tasted, books read, and what we thought about them.

Bento, a spread sheet program from Apple, is looking to tap into that audience. Bento is developed by Filemaker, a subsidiary of Apple, and is available only for Leopard (Apple's OS 10.5) as a free preview or a full version for $50.

Bento integrates with with other Apple services such as iCal, Address Book, and .Mac to sync data back and forth. It can import data from Excel and CSV spread sheets, and even take stock of and help you organize files such as PDFs, Keynote Presentations, and photos.

The program is designed to blend in with the iLife suite to simplify the art of record keeping. The application is more iTunes than Excel, but the functionality is similar. In addition to text and image fields, Bento has a star rating widget and check boxes to aid in organizing.

Bento even has the equivalent of a smart playlist, filtering out only personal contacts in your address book, who you rate 4 or 5 stars and who you've checked off as having a bought you a birthday gift -- instant best friend list!

Bento is not for every one, but if you have an obsession with organization and want your database system to be both user friendly and aesthetically pleasing, it may be exactly what you need.

From Wired

Related links:

In case you hadn't heard, Sony has gotten its chips (and lawyers) in order, and has finally brought rumble back to its PlayStation 3 controllers. Engadget's Tokyo office was able to get its sweaty (and soon to be rumbling, we'd imagine) hands on an early retail release of the Dual Shock 3.

She looks hot, with her Ceramic White (or Black, as pictured above) case and familiar, comforting shape -- if only the Internet had rumble, maybe we could get an idea of how she moves? Word on the street is that this latest PS3 controller doesn't handle too differently from the Dual Shock 2.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you'll be able to pick one of these up Stateside before Spring 2008, but if you or anyone you know is going to Japan....

Unboxing porn after the jump.

From Engadget

Related Links:

It's usually a good three to five year drought between one version of its operating system to the next, with a bunch of free updates released along the way. Apple, on the other hand, likes to drop nearly annual updates of its current operating system called OS X. Each new release brings some new suite of updates and features and sells for about $130. OS X version 10.5, codenamed Leopard, supercedes last year's Tiger release, and should be hitting stores tomorrow. That means reviews are hitting the wire today, and most seem to think that the update is $130 well spent.

Most reviews focus on the biggest new addition, Time Machine, which enables you to easily and automatically back your Mac up to an external hard drive, then use the software to recover lost files by seeing how your machine looked at virtually any time.

Edward C. Baig, who reviewed Leopard for at 'USA Today' says "recovering lost files is -- thanks to beautiful special effects -- like flying back in time." He also likes the new Back to My Mac remote desktop feature, which lets you connect to one Mac Leopard machine from any other Mac Leopard machine ... at least in theory. He did find a few occurrences where the machines wouldn't connect, however.

David Pogue from the 'New York Times' also likes Time Machine, saying: "When you connect the second drive, Leopard asks if you want to use it for Time Machine. If you click O.K., that's it. One click - that's got to be the shortest setup of any backup system in history." However, he doesn't dig the new transparent menus, which can be difficult to read when appearing over text.

Walt Mossberg from 'Wall Street Journal' echoes the complaints about transparent menus, and in his review compares Leopard quite favorably to Vista when it comes to compatibility:

"In fact, every piece of software and hardware I tried on two Leopard-equipped Macs -- a loaned laptop from Apple and my own upgraded iMac -- worked fine, exhibiting none of the compatibility problems that continue to plague Vista. My old Hewlett-Packard inkjet printer, for which Vista lacks the proper software, worked instantly in Leopard, even over the network. And, unlike with Vista, it was able to print on both sides of the page. I popped my old Verizon cellphone modem card into the test Leopard laptop and it worked, too, with no software installation or tweaking."

So, the reports are good, and the only question is whether it's worth the $130 entry point. If you're the type who is lax about backing up your files, photos, music, movies, and the like, then yes, you should run out and buy Leopard tomorrow and sleep a little better at night knowing that your iTunes collection is safe. Otherwise, the upgrades here seem somewhat minor, and you're probably safe holding off until Apple's next feline-themed OS X release, which we expect, oh, sometime next year.

From USA Today, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal

Related Links:
It hasn't happened yet. In fact, I'm in love with this game. Yes, I'm weird.

Numerous reviews have panned 'Folkore' for being repetitive, confusing, and for making players read text as opposed to listen to voice overs. Reviewers complained about weird characters who say bizarre things and they howled about uneven play -- so much to the point that I was ready to hate this game.

Give me a moment to vent.

Since when is a deep story a bad thing? Did we forget the hours we spent reading lines of text in 'Zelda' and 'Final Fantasy'? And when did "weird" become such a bad word? Did we forget the goofy characters from 'Dragon Quest'? Have cinematic, realistic war games turned us into a bunch of mindless action seekers? Can game makers no longer tell a story without voice overs and fast-panning 3-D scenes? Have we become that shallow as gamers?

I feel better. Nothing wrong with mindless action, by the way. I love a good run and gun as much as the next guy.

Maybe I'm weird (my friends would confirm this), but I found in 'Folklore' a beautiful soundtrack, an intelligent story, characters I actually care about, a witty sense of humor, and a creative surrealism. Playing 'Folklore', for me, was akin to reading a good novel. When I put my controller down, I found myself thinking about its worlds, characters, and developing story.

Imagine a mix of old-school seek-and-find adventure with third-person action and you have an idea of what 'Folklore' is all about. The pacing goes from dialog and mystery in the town of Doolin to control controller whipping action in fantasy-laden dungeons. While this may come off as uneven to some, I found it a nice change of pace. Playing this 'Folklore' felt as if I was playing two games in one.

'Folklore' has you play through a deep paranormal mystery, broken up into chapters, as two characters. One, a young woman seeking personal answers in her life, plays like a rogue. The other, a jaded journalist, is your classic fight brawler. You can choose to play each character's story from beginning to end, but I chose to do a chapter as one character followed by the other in order to keep recent events fresh in my mind. This may come off as repetitive to some, but to me, it was a fascinating exercise in alternative perspectives as the characters' stories developed and intertwined.

Control is unique here, as well. As you finish off enemies, you capture their "Ids" by yanking the SIXAXIS motion controller -- like hooking a fish. It's a satisfying end to fights, and a welcome use of the PS3's motion controls after some failed attempts in 'Lair'. As you capture Ids, you also gain their fighting techniques for use later on. By the end of the game, you are managing dozens of Ids that do unique things to different enemies. This nets out in a fun spin on the traditional role playing game party system.

In the end, I loved 'Folklore'. But then again, I was a bit of a strange child. I didn't like 'Rambo' -- I would have rather watched 'The Goonies'. If you're all about shoot 'em ups and constant action, you may want to move on. If you're turned off by surrealism and fantasy, move on. Then again, if you're looking for something different, spooky, and novelesque, 'Folklore' is for you. Join me at the geek table while the other kids play 'Halo'.

Related Links:

A reader writes: I bought an iPhone and was bummed to see that I can't use my favorite pair of earbuds with it (thanks to a proprietary audio input). The earbuds that came with the iPhone are no good sound-wise and so far I haven't seen many options for IPhone-compatible earbuds. So, I'm looking for a pair of iPhone-compatible earbuds that not only sound good (and go up to 11, volume-wise), but also let me take phone calls. Just tell me what to get!

We were just as disappointed as you were when we got our iPhone, so we immediately went out and bought a bunch of different models. Though we'd heard a lot of great things about the $99 Shure Stereo Headset Universal that we picked up at our local AT&T Store, we actually preferred the equally-priced V-Moda Vibe Duo earbuds, which not only look stylish with their three-toned white rubber, black, and chrome finish, but also offer decent definition in the mid-range and excellent, non-distorting bass on the low-end.

Like many a headset, the V-Moda Vibe Duo comes with a fit kit for differently-sized aural canals, as well as a compact leather case so you don't break them! Our only gripe is you can't answer the phone by just tapping on the mic, as you can with Apple's standard earbuds, but pretty much none of the options out there for the iPhone have this function -- yet. Besides, we'll take the better sound over call-convenience any day! One other thing we like: The cord is made of some kind of synthetic cloth, which doesn't tangle as easily the plastic cords of most earbuds we've had.

Related Links:
