If you're looking to add a little flair to your new netbook, French brand be.ez (be easy) has just come out with a line of netbook protection gear. The LArobe Netbook sleeves come in 10-inch and 9-inch sizes to fit a range of computers and you have nine colors to choose from. While not exactly reinventing the wheel, these sleeves do give a little love to your ultra-portable... and, if you pick the lime green sleeve, at least you'll be able to spot it in a crowd. And did we say Mother's Day gift? We're saying it.
We rolled over to the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey last night for Acer's computer announcement extravaganza. The PC manufacturer announced brand new netbooks, laptops, and desktop lines under its eMachines, Gateway, and Acer brands. Considering the loads of new computer models flashing onto the giant IMAX screen overhead, all intercut with short IMAX clips driven by techno versions of Barber's 'Adagio for Strings,' it took us a while to get a hold on the sheer number of announcements. Improved battery life and affordability seem to have been the trends guiding last night's announcements. We've combed through the announcements, and here's a quick rundown of the big releases.
Continue reading Acer Unveils Slim Timeline Laptop, Plus Desktops, Netbooks, and Nettops

Acer Unveils Slim Timeline Laptop, Plus Desktops, Netbooks, and Nettops originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 11:32:00 EST. The bad economy may well have been the best thing for a new type of notebook computer known as the netbook. You may have heard that term bandied about the Web's tech pages over the past few months, but you might not know what it means. Essentially, a netbook is a low-cost (between $250 and $900), ultra-small-size (anywhere from 7-to-11-inch screens), and lightweight (2-3-pounds, typically) mini-laptop that pretty much every major computer manufacturer (and a few not so major) have started releasing on the marketplace.

Though they're able to handle a lot of the tasks of traditional laptops -- thanks to the inexpensive-but-powerful Atom processor found inside many of them-- netbooks are mainly designed for Web surfing, word processing, e-mailing, music, uploading photos and streaming media -- mainly leisurely tasks that don't involve any high-def DVDs or graphics-hungry computer games.

Netbooks typically run Windows XP, Vista, or Linux. In general, XP and Linux are preferred as they are less resource-hungry and run more smoothly on netbooks, giving them fast boot-up times.

Keyboards are often slightly smaller than average, which can be a dealbreaker for those who need a work laptop. Regardless, if you absolutely must get a new portable PC this year and you don't have much of a budget, investing in a netbook may well be the solution.

We spent the past few weeks trying out some of the most popular netbooks on the market and picked our favorites, narrowing them down by price, features, and user type. You can see our picks in the following pages, along with a video and image gallery at the end. Take a look by clicking on 'Next' below.

Wow. Things at Office Depot appear to be worse than we could have possibly thought. In fact, the alleged apparent systematic misleading of customers makes the shenanigans at BestBuy look quite tame by comparison.

Laptop Mag has published a follow up to its initial report of employees being encouraged to lie to customers at Office Depot. It turns out that salespeople at other Office Depot locations across the country are telling Laptop that the the same dishonesty is being encouraged at their stores. Even worse, the lying goes beyond mere fibs about laptop stock -- employees have reported Photoshopping and digitally altering price tags, as well as including the price of extended warranties and protection plans in the cost of clearance items. For example, if a $500 laptop were on sale for $450 and the employees needed to push an $80 extended warranty, the store would list the laptop at $500 and claim to be offering the $80 warranty for only $30.

View Poll

We'd like to say we're shocked, but it has become increasingly clear that dishonesty and unethical behavior (while not "officially" endorsed) are simply standard corporate policy at some major retail chains. We may not be shocked, but we are certainly appalled.
Continue reading Report: Office Depot Employees Altering Computer Price Tags

Report: Office Depot Employees Altering Computer Price Tags originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 15:57:00 EST. We were ready to fall in love with the Impulse NPX-9000 as soon as we heard the words "World's Cheapest Laptop," but now that we've got a review sample in our hands, the bloom might be off this rose -- especially since the $199 wholesale price isn't even as cheap as the Dell Mini 9 on sale.

On the other hand, there's something just delightfully janky about our Windows XP-powered unit, now labeled the TNX-9500 -- it beeped continuously for several minutes when we first turned it on, the 1GHz no-name processor seems less willing to run Internet Explorer than Richard Stallman on a bad day, and it took us several minutes to figure out that a loud howling sound was being produced by the always-on microphone feeding back through the speakers. Yet for some reason we were all smiles the whole time -- what can we say, we're suckers for cheap.

Hopefully Impulse will stake a bolder claim to the title of "world's cheapest laptop" when production ramps up, since prices are expected to fall, but this particular unit actually can't get any cheaper for you -- we'll be giving it away soon. Check some shots in the gallery at Engadget!
Hands-On with the World's Cheapest Laptops originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 12:21:00 EST. Surely you've seen the annoying ads on television or flashing banner graphics on your favorite sites advertising applications guaranteed to take your slow-as-molasses computer and make it run like new again? Hopefully you've never taken the plunge and clicked or installed, but Slate's Farhad Manjoo did. Out of curiosity, he installed My Faster PC just to see what it would do to his computer. As it turns out, it didn't really do a thing -- other than milk him for $30.

That program, and the dozens of others like it, pledge to clean up supposed detritus left behind by months or years of computing. The folks over at TechDealDigger are letting us know about some of the best deals they find on gadgets every day, so we're going to pass that information on to you. After all, in these tough economic times, every little bit counts. We may not be buying Swarovski-covered iPods any time soon, but everyone needs essentials like a computer, so take a look at what the online deals site sent us today.

Maybe you can't afford to cough up the cash for a brand new laptop, but you can greatly boost its performance with a cheap and simple memory upgrade. Memory is generally inexpensive, but we haven't seen any cheaper memory than this 4GB deal from Amazon. The catch? First, you'll have to send in for a rebate to get the price down to $28.99 (you'll pay $43.99 up front) and it's not exactly the latest or greatest tech: The 800Mhz DDR2 RAM from OCZ is a generation old, but that means that it will still work with most laptops (check with your manufacturer first). Regardless, you'll be hard pressed to notice the performance difference between this and the newer DDR3 -- unless you're doing a lot of gaming or video editing.

Watch this space every day for new tech deals.
With the recession pushing prices of everything down, and with low-priced netbooks' newfound popularity, the research firm IDC is reporting a much larger than normal drop in the average price of PCs. On average, computer prices drop about five-percent per year, but, in the fourth quarter of 2008, prices dipped a dramatic 14.3-percent.

Only once before have prices of computers fallen faster; following the burst of the Internet bubble in the fourth quarter of 2001, they fell 14.5-percent. Another research firm, iSuppli, sees costs continuing to drop, as much as 10-percent in 2009. As consumers increasingly favor netbooks, which usually rest in the $300 to $600 range, more established manufacturers worry that consumers may significantly drive down the prices of their laptop and desktop PCs, according to one expert. "What's concerning here is, [netbooks] could potentially reset consumer expectations of what you pay for a notebook," IDC's Richard Shim told Business Week.

Ezra Gottheil of Technology Business Research, however, believes that lower prices could spur more purchases. With some netbooks having been found at Radioshack for a mere $99 (with a two-year contract from AT&T), such deals may become more popular as people flock to the idea of mobile Web browsing. Accordingly, iSuppli expects that, even in this troubled economy, the downward trend of prices should lead to a 12-percent increase in mobile PC sales. So maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel for PC manufacturers. It's been quite some time since we've had a good exploding battery story. Back in 2007, it seemed like nobody was immune from the plague, with Sony being blamed for battery recalls extending to laptops from Apple, Dell, Toshiba, and a number of others. Given that was so long ago and the news was so widely publicized, we'd figured everyone would have, by now, swapped their recalled batteries for free replacements. Apparently, we were mistaken -- some unlucky soul's aging Apple PowerBook self-destructed in a London office yesterday, sending six-foot flames shooting to the ceiling.

The laptop apparently started smoking, then sparking, then a massive pillar of flame blew out of it that reached the ceiling. It took an entire fire extinguisher bottle to put out the flames, but even then it was still glowing red and dripping slag. It's believed that the laptop is three or four years old, and nobody is sure whether it had its battery replaced during those 2007 recalls. We're guessing it didn't.

If you have an older PowerBook and aren't sure if you need a new battery, head over to Apple's Battery Exchange site and check your serial numbers. Better to be safe than get burned!
Sketchy rumor Sunday, people -- Chinese site Apple.pro is saying there's a 15-inch MacBook Air in the works. That would certainly be an interesting compromise between portability and screen real estate, especially since the Air's new NVIDIA-based internals are actually somewhat capable, but we wouldn't bank on big brother making an appearance just yet. Although Apple.pro was right on the money with leaked unibody MacBook pictures, it's also been way off in the past. Anyone else mildly intrigued by the idea of a thin'n'light with big screen? Comments await. Other than the Palm Pre, the biggest darling of CES has clearly been the Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC. There has been plenty of coverage of the clutch-purse-like device, but we wanted to boil it down to just what you really need to know.

We spent some time with the tiny "don't call it a netbook" from Sony and came away quite impressed with it on the whole. We couldn't truly test any streaming media because the network connection was clogged with a million and one devices, but otherwise the speed of it was truly impressive. Despite having an Atom processor (and not even the top of the line model), the VAIO P in our brief tests ran Vista faster than most other netbooks with faster processors and can run Windows XP (which makes us wonder if Sony is cheating somehow).

The screen is bright and crisp, but probably too small for anyone who requires reading glasses, and the pointer nub requires tiny, nimble hands.

Starting at $899 the VAIO P isn't cheap, but it's as close to a full-featured ultra-portable notebook as you're going to get in that price range (though we haven't had time to really manhandle MSI's X-Slim 320 yet). Add in the instant-on, though surprisingly slow, cross-bar menu that anyone who has used a PSP or PS3 would be familiar with, and Sony has a real winner on its hands.

So who exactly is the VAIO P for? Well, if you want the smallest possible notebook and style and speed are important, but price is not, then you should seriously consider it when it becomes available in February.

For a quick overview of the Sony P's basics, check out our video below.

If you crave some of the finer, geekier details, check out Engadget's extensive coverage here.

Continue reading Is Sony's Clutch-Purse-Like Sony P Notebook for You?

Is Sony's Clutch-Purse-Like Sony P Notebook for You? originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 13:21:00 EST.
Laptops have officially overtaken traditional desktop PCs, according to a Reuters report.

In the all-important week before Christmas, laptops dominated online retail giant Amazon.com's list of the 10 highest selling computers and hardware components, while nary a desktop appeared on the list. Noting advances in laptop technology and consumer demand for portability, commentators find that laptops' recent success largely depends on one particularly relevant reason: a newfound competitiveness in pricing.

Peter Lin, an analyst with iSuppli, told Reuters, "On both price and performance, laptops are so competitive now it's surprising they weren't able to catch up with desktops even earlier."
Continue reading Laptop Sales Overtake Traditional Desktop PC Sales Over Holiday

Laptop Sales Overtake Traditional Desktop PC Sales Over Holiday originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 05:01:00 EST. The hotly anticipated VAIO P is for real, and it's coming in as the world's lightest 8-inch netbook at just 1.4 pounds. The Vista-based device packs an almost unbelievable 1,600 x 768 resolution LED-backlit XBRITE-ECO LCD display, 802.11n WiFi, WWAN, Bluetooth, a battery good for four hours (eight hours with the optional high-capacity cell) and a GPS module for good measure. You'll also find an instant-on mode that launches directly into Sony's Xross Media Bar interface, and the inbuilt Webcam will keep the video chats going well into the morning. It'll start shipping in early February (in garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white and classic black hues) for $900 and up, and you can peek the full release just after the break.

Head on over to Engadget for more coverage and pics.
Continue reading Sony Gets Official with VAIO P: World's Lightest 8-inch Netbook

Sony Gets Official with VAIO P: World's Lightest 8-inch Netbook originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 19:38:00 EST. What started as a recall of 35,000, just hit 100,000 (75,000 of which are HP related) and now includes Li-ion batteries used in some Lenovo and Acer laptops as well as the original list of Dells, HPs, and Toshibas. All the laptops were sold between 2004 and 2005, two-thrids or which were sold outside the US. What's most troubling is that Sony claims the faulty batteries are from the same unit that made the recalled batteries from two years ago.

So... Apple, you next?

[Affected models include: Dell Latitude 110L, Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, and 5160; HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000, and zd8000, Compaq Presario v2000 and v2400, and HP Compaq nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230, nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120, nx9600; Toshiba Satellite A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X, and M50/M55.]
New Sony Battery Recall Affects Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba Laptops originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 09:35:00 EST. We knew more Inspiron Minis were in the works, and Dell's just officially announced the next member of the family, the Inspiron Mini 12. Yep, the same machine we first spotted all the way back in June, and nothing much has changed in the meantime -- you're looking at either a 1.3GHz Atom Z520 or 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor (a step up from the usual 1.6GHz Atom N270), up to an 80GB drive, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth / Wi-Fi, and that 12-inch, 1280 x 800 display, all in a 2.72-pound package less than one inch thick.

The bad news? It's Japan-only for now, but it'll hit the States late next month with a starting price under $600. That's a pretty hot price / performance ratio on paper -- if this thing performs like it should, it could potentially take away sales from more full-featured ultraportables like the Envy 133 and the MacBook Air. We'll see how it goes -- the netbook market suddenly got interesting again, eh?

Update: It's worth pointing out that this netbook runs Vista Home Edition, albeit sluggishly according to APC (XP and Ubuntu variants by end of year). It also ships standard with a 3-hour 3 cell battery or optional $79 6-cell battery for up to 6-hours of power.

Read - Dell announcement
Read - Laptop hands-on
Read - APC hands-on
Read - Dell Q+A
Dell Launches the Inspiron Mini 12 originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 16:49:00 EST. Don't let that "finished" rubiks' cube fool you. The steps too build this ergonomic laptop stand are dead simple: 1) bend hangar, b) stop bending hangar.
No clue if HP will be sticking with the Digital Clutch moniker (wouldn't be a bad choice, actually), but one's thing for certain: The computer manufacturer is teaming up with designer Vivienne Tam for a highly decorated netbook. The shot you're looking at above is just about all we have to go on, but obviously this one won't appeal to those who aren't into vivaciousness, vividness and, um, flora.

We are told that it'll be available this December with an Intel Atom processor within (which is pretty noteworthy given HP's current relationship with VIA), but everything else is being closely concealed for now -- even though Atom typically equals 1-gigabyte (GB) of RAM, a 1.6GHz clock speed and an 80GB HDD. But hey, a woman has to have her secrets, right?

[Thanks, Ronald]
Fashionable HP Vivienne Tam Netbook Coming This December originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 09:38:00 EST.
Traveling isn't what it used to be, particularly now that you have to whip out your laptop at security checks. (We also can't stand the tight spaces in economy class that make opening a laptop fully on a tray table to work all but impossible.) Luckily, nearly all computer manufacturers are pulling out the stops and creating super-compact, ultra-thin laptops that are aimed specifically at travelers, yet don't necessarily skimp on some high-tech specs. Take a look at the above video for three of our favorites.....
Top 3 Travel Laptops (Video) originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 13:30:00 EST.
Over the last decade, you've probably lusted after some sleekly designed Samsung cell phone, MP3 player, or flat-screen TV, but unfortunately you've never had the chance to lust after a Samsung laptop. That's because, unlike the rest of the world, Samsung's laptops have never been available in the U.S. - until now. Today, Samsung unveiled a new line of high-end portable computers, which will be available online at sites such as Amazon.com, NewEgg.com, Buy.com, and TigerDirect.com later this month.

We got an early hands-on with the laptops when Samsung stopped for a visit a couple of weeks ago, and were impressed with the look and feel of the new models. The snazziest of the new models are the 13.3- and 14.1-inch ultra thin X360 and X460, which are designed to go head-to-head with the MacBook Air and the Lenovo X300. These two-toned beauties are just under three pounds and are said to have a superlative 10 hours of battery life, despite having SuperBright LED backlit displays. We're curious to try out the battery life for ourselves, but 10 hours is about as good as it gets. All in all are slick-looking laptops that won't take up much space in your backpack, but we wish they had built-in mobile broadband capability, as the Lenovo X300 and even smaller Sony TZ series do.

Samsung also announced the R610 ($1,049) desktop replacement, which has a feels a bit less bulky than the typical desktop replacement, but still offers a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, HD resolution and Windows Vista Home Premium for recording and managing all your favorite TV shows and movies. Again, it has a two-toned look that'll look nice on a table or desk and most of the bleeding-edge features you'd want (Bluetooth 2.0, HDMI output, Wi-Fi, 3 USB 2.0 ports), but lacks, for example, a Blu-ray drive, which means it's fine to replace a desktop computer, but maybe not your entire home entertainment system (as many other desktop replacements can).

The new laptop we were most impressed with was the NC10 ($899, pictured, above). Like the Asus eeePC and the Everex Cloudbook, this clutch-sized mini-laptop falls into the growing affordable and small netbook category, which means it's perfect for checking your e-mail and basic Web-surfing, but don't depend on it for editing videos. Still, we liked the keyboard on the NC10 more than on any other netbook we've had the chance to try out so far - slightly bigger and spaced out keys made for typing at a fast clip not too far off from a standard-sized laptop keyboard. We also like the chrome border around the NC10's edge, which gives this netbook a stylistic edge over some of its brethren (the eeePC, Dell 910 mini, etc).

For a closer look at these laptops, take a look at the gallery below.

Gallery: Samsung

Samsung Introduces Laptops for the US Market originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 17:53:00 EST. After giving the new IdeaPad U110 its 15 minutes of fame in front of the camera, we got down to business. The 11.1-inch ultraportable is built like a tank -- a really, really lightweight tank. The uniquely-designed lid and (overly) glossy motif is a welcome change for Lenovo, but after a good bit of use, it's easy to see this one won't appeal to the masses. Click on for the full rundown of impressions and notes (and a video, too).
Continue reading Lenovo U110 Hands-On and Overview

Lenovo U110 Hands-On and Overview originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 05 May 2008 12:32:00 EST.
