In February, Google teased us with an updated version of Google Goggles that could translate words appearing in photographs, but, sadly, that version was limited to German-to-English translations. Still, we were promised that an update would bring other languages, and that day is finally here. Now, Goggles can read images featuring English, French, Italian, German and Spanish words, and translate them into a host of other languages. (See the full list here.) This means we can finally figure out what all those words on the French menu actually mean.

The new version of Google Goggles, v1.1, brings other improvements, too, including better barcode recognition and a larger database of recognizable logos, artworks and products. Goggles can now even perform visual searches on images in your phone's photo gallery. The new version is available now, in the Android Market, for handsets running Android 1.6 and higher. The newly independent Rhapsody is moving at lightning speed to steal back some market share by slashing prices and marketing the iPhone's offline playback support of the service. The former Real subsidiary has beaten other would-be killer iPhone music apps to the punch, as it's the first on the block (in the U.S., anyway) allowing users to tag songs they want to play -- even when no Internet connection is available. MOG plans to offer the feature starting in May, while Spotify has been offering it in Europe for sometime now.

We put the new 'Rhapsody 2.0' app through a trial, and witnessed the offline caching abilities handle sporadic drops in connection without breaking a sweat. Even when we went and turned off both the Wi-Fi and cellular radios while streaming a song (thanks to the magic of jailbreaking), Rhapsody just kept going. The app was quick to recognize when there was a Web connection available, and changes the interface (blue for online, orange for off) to reflect the app's status.
Meebo has been a favorite amongst cloud computing purists for some time. It's a Web-based, multi-protocol instant messaging client that works across more networks than one person could possibly remember. Mobile IM addicts have been eagerly anticipating the service's official iPhone app, which will finally offer an alternative to high-priced options from Beejive and IM+ ($6.99 and $4.99, respectively).

After first being teased last March, the free app has finally hit the iTunes store. In addition to being free (which gives it a huge leg up), the app, according to early reviews, is faster than the competition while retaining all the key features: broad compatibility, chat logs, and push notifications. (We can't confirm or deny this, as we haven't used Beejive or IM+.)
Continue reading Meebo Finally Launches Free iPhone Instant Messaging App

Meebo Finally Launches Free iPhone Instant Messaging App originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 17 Feb 2010 08:24:00 EST.
Siri is a new voice search and "virtual assistant" application for the iPhone that takes "natural language" requests and turns them into actionable results. For example, ask Siri "where can I get the best sushi," and it will, using the iPhone's GPS, search Yelp to find recommended sushi restaurants near you.

Using Nuance, the same speech-to-text engine that powers popular tools like Jott and the Dragon, Siri converts your requests to text, parses them to determine your intent, and then pulls appropriate content from its partners such as Yelp, Eventful and Taxi Magic. What makes Siri unique, and particularly useful, is that once you've found a restaurant, or a movie, you can reserve a table or purchase tickets right from the app. Siri can also look up weather forecasts, business locations and concerts, and can even book you a taxi.
Continue reading Impressive 'Siri' App Makes Your iPhone a Virtual Assistant

Impressive 'Siri' App Makes Your iPhone a Virtual Assistant originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 06:30:00 EST.

What it is:

Share

KeePass, along with its innumerable (and unofficial) ports, is one of the best and most flexible password managers available. In order to keep your various accounts and log-in information safe, it's strongly encouraged that you not only choose difficult-to-guess passwords, but that you also use a different password for every account. The problem with that method, though, is that it's quite difficult to remember all those passwords. KeePass and programs like it remember all your passwords for you, while keeping them safe from prying eyes.

What we like:

KeePass is available for more computing platforms than any application we've ever seen. Windows, OS X, Linux, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and J2ME (many "dumb" phones) are all covered by some version of KeePass. There's even a portable version that can be run from your USB drive (or the Switched-endorsed DropBox).
Continue reading KeePass Keeps Your Passwords Safe and Organized

KeePass Keeps Your Passwords Safe and Organized originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 12:15:00 EST. What it is: 'Canabalt' is a simple game, available both as a free Flash game and as a $2.99 download for the iPhone. The premise is basic; you play a tiny man, fleeing what appears to be an alien invasion, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, dodging obstacles, and smashing through windows.

What we like: This game is as pared down as it gets. There is only one button: jump. There is no 3-D environment in which to position the camera, no punching, kicking, or shooting -- you can't even control movement left or right. To accompany the simple game-play mechanics, the game employs an equally simple aesthetic design. The world of 'Canabalt' exists almost entirely in four shades of gray, and is stylishly pixelated.
Continue reading Canabalt's Run-Jump-Go Splat Format Massively Addicting

Canabalt's Run-Jump-Go Splat Format Massively Addicting originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 29 Dec 2009 12:30:00 EST. There's no denying the runaway success of Apple's App Store: to date, iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded some 2 billion applications from its ever-expanding library of 100,000. But there's also no escaping the rumblings of discontent from many consumers and developers who feel that Apple is unfairly acting as judge, jury, and executioner by censoring apps and exiling them from the App Store.

Much of the consternation stems from the fact that Apple has never published hard and fast guidelines for what determines whether an app will be allowed through Apple's gatekeepers. To make matters worse for frustrated developers, Apple frequently contradicts itself in its judgments. So, say, while porn stars are free to peddle T and A to consenting adults, e-book packages that include the "Kama Sutra" are apparently too risqué for Apple. In the hopes of discovering a method to this maddening process, we've looked at nine high-profile iPhone apps that were found guilty of transgressing Apple's (unwritten) approval terms, and weigh in on the fairness of Apple's judgment and the likelihood an app will have it overturned on appeal in the future.
Continue reading 9 Banned Apps You'll Never See on the iPhone

9 Banned Apps You'll Never See on the iPhone originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 12:45:00 EST. What it is: Dropbox is an online storage service that holds your files (up to 2 gigabytes) for free, and automatically syncs them between several PCs. It also allows you to access your files from any Web-connected computer. Dropbox offers 2 free gigabytes of storage to all users, but you can upgrade that to 50GB for $9.99 a month, or 100GB for $19.99 a month. If you want a slight boost in storage, but don't want to cough up for it, you can gain an extra 250 megabytes of free storage for each new user you refer -- up to a 3GB limit.

What we like: Dropbox is dead simple to use. Simply download the application from GetDropbox.com and then install it. The installer automatically creates a Dropbox folder where you can save any files you want to sync and share. Whether you run Windows or have a Mac, or even if you're a Linux, you'll find a version of Dropbox that will work. There is also a newly released iPhone app that will let you access files from your phone, and a Web interface that lets you pull them up from any device (computer or smartphone) with Internet access.
Continue reading Access Files From Anywhere -- Even Your iPhone -- With Dropbox

Access Files From Anywhere -- Even Your iPhone -- With Dropbox originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 12:35:00 EST.
In an atmosphere of disappearing print magazines, increased TV viewing on the Web, and a tough market for both car buyers and dealers, one of the few successful car companies alive today needs to change the game a bit. So with the introduction of a niche-y hot hatch that isn't even that cheap, Volkswagen hits hard with quick and dirty campaign on everyone's favorite toy -- the iPhone. This morning, Volkswagen became the first auto manufacturer to launch (by launch, we mean advertise) a car solely on the Apple phone. No, it's not an app, but rather, an exclusive, playable, and independent level of iPhone racing game Firement Real Racing, which has already received 70-million downloads since launching back in June.

Available on the iTunes App Store for free, the 'Real Racing GTI' level lets you choose from six different 2010 GTIs and race them on a track laden with VW logos. Unfortunately, it doesn't integrate with the rest of the game, but it does have one killer feature: Players can compete to win one of six limited-edition black GTI MkVI cars, which have special stitching on the floor mats and head rests, carbon-fiber finishes on the doors and mirrors, red calipers on the wheels, and special logos on the front and on the steering wheel (see close-ups of the cars in the slideshow below). In addition, the 2010 GTI's sound system has been upgraded to include full iPod integration (so you can access your full music library on the car's dashboard versus a simple auxiliary connection).
Continue reading VW Launches 2010 GTI Exclusively Via Mobile Phone Game

VW Launches 2010 GTI Exclusively Via Mobile Phone Game originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 17:39:00 EST. The iPhone increasing lets you do many things, but playing a real piano in real time so far hasn't been one of them -- at least until this past week at CEATEC, the annual consumer electronics show held in Tokyo, Japan, which we were fortunate enough to attend. On display at the Yamaha booth was one of the more impressive iPhone apps we've seen to date: Called Finger Piano Share, since it lets up to 10 people remotely play a real piano from their iPhones via Wi-Fi (the piano must be of the MIDI-enabled Disklavier variety, of course).

You'll see a bit of what the app looks like in the above video. You tap a virtual key on your iPhone screen, and the real key plays on the piano. Finger Piano Share lets you play music of your own creation, improvise along with other folks simultaneously for some kind of abstract jam session, or play pre-programmed tunes by following onscreen prompts, a la 'Rock Band.'
Continue reading Finger Piano Share: Play Real Pianos From Your iPhone, Remotely

Finger Piano Share: Play Real Pianos From Your iPhone, Remotely originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 11 Oct 2009 23:18:00 EST.
The iPhone may not be as big in Japan as it is in the States, but that hasn't stopped Nissan from developing an app that shows the residents of Yokohama City, Japan how to drive better.

The new program is part of a trial service called E1 Grand Prix. Here's how it works: The app connects to your car's On-Board Diagnostics (OBD), and extracts information in real-time to determine how efficiently you're driving (you know, from a saving fuel perspective). Step on the gas and then break too much, and you'll get a low score; accelerate just enough to coast to the corner before the light turns red, and you'll get high marks. The app connects to your OBD via in-car mobile Wi-Fi, and then spits back your results on your iPhone screen and via e-mail. The results are also uploaded to an online site, where you essentially compete with other folks to be the most 'eco-efficient' driver -- hence the 'Grand Prix' name).
Continue reading Nissan iPhone App Helps You Win the Grand Prix -- of Eco-Driving

Nissan iPhone App Helps You Win the Grand Prix -- of Eco-Driving originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 07:06:00 EST. As part of an ongoing effort to refine and improve mobile communication options for the blind, Nokia Labs has introduced a new SMS application (video after the break) that allows blind users to receive Braille text messages via the company's touch phones. The program receives the tactile texts, and, with a series of coded vibrations, relays the message to the user.

To date, most blind-accessible phones have featured devices that process text messages and then read them aloud to the user, rather than using vibrations. There are several more new developments in mobile software oriented towards the visually impaired, too. An iPhone app currently in development at iVisit is reported to be able to recognize everyday objects with the phone's camera, and identify them aurally for blind users. (The iPhone features several apps for the hearing impaired as well, including soundAMP and iHearClear.) CodeFactory, too, offers a variety of mobile downloads and applications for the visually impaired, including software that magnifies a phone's screen for better visibility.
Continue reading Nokia's New 'Vibe' Braille Helps the Blind Read Text Messages

Nokia's New 'Vibe' Braille Helps the Blind Read Text Messages originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 18 Sep 2009 10:19:00 EST.
If you're a grown man, you've more than likely found yourself in this situation: it's 2 a.m., you've had enough booze to knock out Andre the Giant, and your bladder feels like an overfilled water balloon that could explode at any second. What do you do? Stumble to the bathroom, unzip those pants, and say a prayer. Because that urinal looks no bigger than a thimble (if you can even figure out, through your double-vision, which is the real urinal).

Sounds like fun, right? Now, you can relive that experience (minus the alcohol) anywhere with a new iPhone app. It's called 'iPeePee,' and it's not a joke, according to Pocket Gamer. The premise is pretty straightforward. You play a drunk guy trying to pee in the appropriate location. Unlike real life, your reward isn't dry pants or maintaining some dignity; it's a high score.

It's a wonder this app was approved by Apple, but apparently, urine is okay with the App Store overseers. (As we know, boobs and booty certainly are not.) There's no doubt 'iPeePee' will be a hit with the college crowd (as would any apps involving boobs and booty), especially since it costs a mere $.99. We can see it now: Fraternities across the nation using the app as a way to train lightweight pledges.
Many online services have tried to drag online one of the last hold-outs of desktop software: the music manager. But the hurdle upon which Last.FM, Imeem, Slacker, and Pandora all stumble is their inability to offer users access to whatever music they want, on-demand, especially in the mobile sphere. Most of the mobile versions of these apps have been relegated to streaming, predetermined playlists and "stations." As such, none of these apps have managed to knock the desktop-based iTunes off its throne.

Spotify, on the other hand, combines the social and, most importantly, free, aspects of these Web apps with the on-demand capabilities of services like Napster. A key element of Spotify's business plan revolves around an iPhone application that will let you stream any song you want over 3G (as long as it's one of the six million for which the company has secured licensing deals). One feature that will make Spotify stand heads above the competition is its ability to cache songs for offline play. That means that even if you venture into the subway or wander outside of your coverage area, Spotify will keep on playing.
Continue reading This Week in Tech: Apple Approved Spotify App, Confounding Critics

This Week in Tech: Apple Approved Spotify App, Confounding Critics originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 08:08:00 EST.
In a sign that AT&T may finally be inching its metaphorical head out of its collective nether regions, the company will be bringing the "far-out" technology of MMS (plain, old 'picture messages' to the rest of us) to the iPhone on September 25th.

The date falls a few days past the end of summer, the initially projected time of release, but AT&T's Brad Mays insists the move was made only to provide its customers with the best possible experience. "We support more iPhone customers than any other carrier in the world, so we took the time necessary to make sure our network is ready to handle what we expect will be a record volume of MMS traffic," he said in a prepared statement. "We truly appreciate our customers' patience and hope they'll understand our desire to get it right from the start."

And yet despite the appreciative words, it's clear that AT&T's head remains firmly in (that nefarious) place; the company has said that tethering will not be an option in the near future, due to the network's inability to handle the resulting traffic. Oh, and one final bit of lameness: MMS will only work on iPhone 3G and 3GS models. And on nearly every other cell phone made in the past five years. So original iPhone owners have to, well, deal with it.

To be fair, we should also point out that phone calls on any model iPhone still suck. Yay, AT&T!

For a culture that feeds ground-up, dead cows to living cows in the name of economics, we sure do get paranoid when it comes to disease. And there's no better sign of that paranoia than the Outbreaks Near Me iPhone app, which allows users to access disease outbreak information.

The app is based on the free HealthMap Web site, but improves upon it by letting users add to the knowledge base. When there's public-health trouble in the area, users can share the information with the rest of the community.

"Say you're in a clinical setting as a patient or clinician and seeing lots of unusual cases of something," Clark Freifeld, a founder of HealthMap and Ph.D. student in MIT Media Lab's New Media Medicine Group, told Wired.com. "You'd be able to note that down and submit it into the system." Mere hours after the app's release, HealthMap had already been informed of an illness at a school.

The service won't rely solely on man-on-the-street input, however; it takes information from various accredited news sources, as well. The idea, though, is that user submissions will start to relay preliminary warnings before official services are able to react. "It's about empowering citizens in the cause of public health to both provide them with information and allow them to contribute information to share with others," Freifeld explained to Wired.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled meal of chicken raised on chicken, cow raised on cow, etc. [From: Wired]
New iPhone App Spreads News of Disease Outbreaks originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 02 Sep 2009 15:14:00 EST.
The seemingly inevitable has finally become reality: Rockstar is bringing the 'Grand Theft Auto' franchise to the iPhone. It's happening sooner than you would think (this fall), but it's unclear whether it will be a top-down style game -- much like the recently released 'GTA: Chinatown Wars,' and hearkening back to the series' roots on PC and PlayStation -- or a third-person situation, like the forthcoming PSP game of the same name.

When released earlier this year, the DS version of 'Chinatown Wars' scored high marks. The graphics were a major issue, but players can expect a significant upgrade in this capacity, thanks to the iPhone's drastically higher resolution and sheer computing horsepower.

Continue reading Rockstar Bringing Grand Theft Auto to iPhone

Rockstar Bringing Grand Theft Auto to iPhone originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 09:16:00 EST. Our friends over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog just launched a new iPhone app (already #3 in the free news category on the App Store), available now via iTunes [iTunes link] and via the TUAW app page.

You mobile Mac-heads out there probably know about i.tuaw.com, the iPhone-optimized version of TUAW. Why go native? The new app offers offline browsing, allows you to bookmark articles for later reading, features Twitter/e-mail/Facebook-sharing capability, and lets you view that retro Mac design gallery in glorious full screen. Now, you don't have any excuse for missing out on that blurry pic of the latest Apple iDevice, taken in some dark factory by a TUAW secret agent.

And, yes, fellow Apple addicts, there's more. We've got a video tour of the app embedded after the break.
Continue reading TUAW Launches iPhone App

TUAW Launches iPhone App originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 19:34:00 EST.
