Foxit PDF Reader

What it does:

Foxit is a replacement for that unfortunate staple of every computer user's life: Adobe Reader. Foxit reads and even edits PDFs -- those files that look exactly like original documents -- without the slowdown and crashes associated with Adobe's product.

What we like about it:

Foxit is about as close to perfect as a piece software can get: it opens and operates faster than Adobe's Reader, uses much less RAM, and packs more features into a download about a tenth the size.

In addition to reading PDFs, Foxit can perform basic editing tasks and lets you add notes to documents -- features Adobe charges several hundred dollars for in its Acrobat platform. Foxit even has some features that Adobe's professional application lacks, such as tabs for opening several PDFs in one window, and support for multimedia so you can actually play back audio and video in multimedia e-books.

What we don't like:

Our only problem with Foxit is that the latest versions are Windows-only. Mac and Linux users need love too.

Bottom line:

The existence of the fast, stable, and user-friendly Foxit makes you wonder why anyone would continue to use Adobe's bloated, crash-prone program. Get Foxit now and clicking links to PDF files will no longer prompt panic and cursing.

Download Foxit PDF Reader

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Terrence O'Brien

Lenovo U110 Hands-On and Overview

Filed under: Computers, Editor's Picks, Laptops, Notebooks, Reviews

The 11.1-inch ultraportable is built like a tank -- a really, really lightweight tank. The uniquely-designed lid and (overly) glossy motif is a welcome change for Lenovo, but after a good bit of use, it's easy to see this one won't appeal to the masses. We were lucky to get a couple of days to play around with the sexy, new Lenovo U110 ultraportable laptop. It's only 2.3 pounds and, as you can see, small enough to fit into the teeniest of backpacks. It's also one of the slickest looking notebooks we've ever laid our eyes or hands on, with oversized keys that make typing surprisingly smooth (for such a small laptop).

Handling-wise, it's not fair for us to say, since we had access only to a pre-production unit, but with up to 3-gigabytes (GB) of RAM available, the U110 has the potential to be the little computer than could....

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Samiljan

Hype Check: 'Grand Theft Auto IV'

Filed under: Advice, Reviews, Summer Fun

What it is: The latest installment in the free-roaming, crime-spree-filled video game series, 'Grand Theft Auto IV' is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated title of all time -- of this year, anyway. And, with the bevy of perfect scores being applied before and since its release, it stands to possibly be the most highly rated game of all time as well -- again at least until some other new top-notch title comes along and changes that. It's also the first game to be numbered as a proper sequel since 'Grand Theft Auto III' wowed gamers (and horrified parents) almost eight years ago. In this most recent entry, players roam pretty much anywhere they want through the streets of a somewhat scaled down New York City, playing the role of a recent immigrant from Eastern Europe. As in the earlier games, players work their way up from small-time crimes to major heists, with the ultimate goal being to make 'Scarface'-worthy names for themselves.

Why it's different: 'GTA IV' is the first of the series to appear on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, meaning that it blows away the earlier titles in terms of looks. Remember how in the old games buildings would pop into view at the last minute if you were driving quickly? No more; you can see skyscrapers miles away now. Those environments are more detailed, too, as well as the characters within them, who look distinctively more human than the blocky thugs in previous titles.

This is also the first title to officially offer online multiplayer through a handful of modes that range from races around the city to, well, completely disorganized mayhem. Unfortunately, they're separate from the game itself, meaning you won't be going through a mission and bumping into a buddy en-route, but they're still a blast and should give this game plenty of life. If that's not enough for you, though, the Xbox 360 version at least will include downloadable content, adding new territory to explore and missions to complete, meaning this game will continue to grow.

What we like: The new storyline, that of an Eastern European with a checkered past coming to America to escape trouble, only to find even more thanks to his dunder-headed cousin, is definitely appealing. For once the main character is a seemingly humble, likable guy; not a thug or a gangster. The streets of Liberty City, a fictionalized New York City, are familiar (including a subway system Big Apple-dwellers will be able to use without a map) yet diverse and ready for exploring, and being able to walk right into a building without having to sit through a "Now Loading" screen is a huge improvement.

What we don't like: The game is a huge improvement visually over its predecessors, but doesn't come close to comparing to recent graphical powerhouses such as 'Mass Effect'. While the cityscape looks great, as you can tell from the skyline in the above screenshot, the colors and textures are occasionally a bit flat, resulting in terrain that's somewhat dull looking. Cars in particular disappoint, with their blocky fenders and simple, generic lines. But that's somewhat forgivable given the massive scope of the environment and experience here. Also, as much as we enjoy completing them, the missions in general feel a little familiar, like frequent assignments escorting people from A to B, and constant escapes from persistent police officers.

What it costs: $59.99

Does it live up to the hype? There's absolutely no reason why any fan of the 'Grand Theft Auto' franchise would not want to pick this up. It's improved in every way over the earlier versions and the multiplayer modes plus future downloadable content will give this one far more life than any of the earlier games. It's not quite perfect (despite all those 10/10 review scores), but it is damn good. Just about any gamer out there will have a blast exploring Liberty City and working their way through the storyline -- that is except for those who can't stomach committing a few felonies on their way to gaming bliss.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tim Stevens

Top 10 Funniest Pet Web Sites (4)

4. Cute With Chris

This hilarious Web site (and even funnier weekly video podcast) asks its users to decide whether a celebrity or a fuzzy animal is cuter. The formula generates pretty funny results and at the end of each show, Chris Leavins, the scruffy, campy host, announces the past week's winner. Chris's comments are irreverent and occasionally not PG, but his show -- which usually focuses on silly pet-inspired themes like "Crazy Cat Ladies" -- is well produced, filled with funny production tricks (constant crazy cat sounds in the background) and a good bit of celebrity humor in addition to the cute animals. The Web site is a blog of cute pet pictures and other pet-related bits. Recently posted items included the usual cute pet pictures as well as a photo (above) of David Archuleta (of 'American Idol' fame) with his pet dog (from before he was famous) and a portrait of Chris drawn by a fan. 'Cute with Chris' neatly plays off off the Internet's obsession with celebrity gossip and funny pet pictures by combining the two with a healthy dose of irony and sarcastic wit. Don't miss it.

There are some worthy alternatives out there, though, most notably one called ChaCha, which has an interesting alternative angle: All its searches are human-powered. Yes, Google has made jokes about having monkeys power their searches, but ChaCha has real people producing and verifying every search result. Until now, the site has received searches via text message and sent the responses in kind, but now a new feature lets you phone it in, literally.

You can now call 800-224-2242 and speak your question into a recording. Within a few minutes, you'll get a text message containing the answer. Well, you'll actually get three text messages in response: one thanking you for using the service, one saying your answer is coming, and then, finally, the answer itself. That's perhaps not exactly appreciated for someone paying $.10 or more per text message, but at least there are no additional charges.

Anything is game as far as questions go. We asked for the phone number for our favorite local pizza joint and got that, plus the street address, in a text message in about three minutes. Not all search results were so good, though. We also asked what a good DVD burning choice would be for archiving some of our DivX/XviD vids, and unfortunately the response sounded like a marketing pitch for the software, saying: "DivX for Windows gives you everything you need to create and play high-quality DivX videos on your PC." We don't disagree, but that didn't really answer the question.

Overall, though, it works quite well, and if you're in a situation where you can't text your question in this is worth checking out.

From textually.org

Related Links:
If high school students can get four-figure mileage figures from a gallon of gas, why do most cars sputter out before the 30-mile mark? PLUS: A pill-sized bulb outshines a street light, a man loses everything to a fake Craigslist ad and a (different) man accidentally kills his wife while installing satellite TV.

Listen Now (mp3)

Be among the first to hear the 'Switched Show' each week. Subscribe for Free with iTunes. (Or subscribe with your own podcast aggregator by using the Switched Show feed.)

Previous Podcasts:

In need of a break? 'The World's Hardest Game' should keep you entertained with at least a half-hour of time-wasting fun and frustration.

The rules are simple enough: Move the red square using the arrow cursor keys on your keyboard and avoid the moving blue circles while collecting the yellow ones. To finish each level, move to the green section. Simple concept, but it's easier said than done (and it's all set to a frenetic techno soundtrack).

Because 'The World's Hardest Game' is a flash game, it loads in your browser and you can start playing quickly -- no installation necessary! While we don't know if it lives up to its title, the game is pretty hard, and does a great job of taunting you with discouraging text messages onscreen -- "I guarantee you will fail," among others -- as you move along to the each new level.

Play now!

Related Links:
You wake up. Walk to the bathroom. Turn on the shower. Go to the Bathroom. Take off your robe. Step into shower. Curse at water that still isn't hot. All the while, water is being wasted by the gallons. It is a widespread ritual and consequently a widespread problem. Evolve, manufacturer of eco-friendly shower heads, has created a solution by introducing ShowerStart technology.

ShowerStart Technology turns the water streaming from the the shower head into a trickle once the water has warmed to 95 degrees. This simple process saves gallons of water, not to mention the energy needed to heat it. Once you have completed your morning routine of stagnation and frustration, just get in the shower and flick a switch to regain normal water flow.

You will still have to wait for your shower to heat up, but at least now you won't be wasting water. We realize that this will be of little consolation at 6 a.m. on a freezing spring morning.

From 3rings

Related Links

We've seen laser combs aimed at restoring lost hair before, but have not heard any inspiring tails of success. That hasn't stopped yet another company from jumping into the market for hair loss cures powered by the same technology that reads your DVDs.

The X5 Hair Laser is available only from that bastion of quality products, SkyMall. For $299, 15 points of laser light, supposedly optimized for stimulating hair growth, are focused on your scalp. A significant investment of time is required however to see any results. The company recommends three 10-15 minute sessions a week to see any results.

We suggest our friends with receding hairlines just go bald gracefully and not waste their money on gimmicky cures.

From Crave

Related links:
That's why we recommend phones with actual, physical keyboards to anyone who tends to send a lot of text-messages or e-mails. Luckily, most of the smart phones out there feature actual keyboards. To find out the three we like best, check out the above Switched-exclusive video.

Hype Check: Palm Centro

What it is: Palm's Centro smartphone is the PDA pioneer's longest leap yet into the world of consumer phones, sporting the functionality of the larger Treo 755p in a smaller candy bar form factor. It has a full QWERTY keyboard, and supports all the features (and third-party applications) Palm users have come to enjoy. A version of the Centro has been out on Sprint, but Palm has turned it into an slower (for data) EDGE device for its AT&T debut.

Why it's different: The phone is considerably smaller, sleeker, and cooler than past Treo devices. There's a huge difference between the feel of the Centro and any other Palm phone: The keys are softer, the body is cleaner, and the interface is even a bit more intuitive. It comes in a rainbow of fruit flavors, and it fits much better in your pocket.

Price: $99 with a two year contract, on the AT&T Web site.

What we like: The Centro is a pretty cool-looking phone -- sorta like what would happen if you cross-bred an Xbox 360 and a Sony Ericsson (in other words, it looks like a business-ready phone that knows how to have fun). Besides being one of the smallest phones on the market with a full QWERTY keyboard, the Centro also has a touchscreen -- not multi-touch, mind you, but still a touchscreen -- which is still a rarity on consumer smartphones (though it should be noted that the touchscreen is better suited for use with the included stylus than with your finger). It's a Palm, meaning it has had most of its quirks ironed out over the years. In addition, Palm has included instant messaging, video, and music applications, as well as easy access (and setup) for your e-mail provider(s) of choice. It's also quite a bargain -- just $99 with a two-year contract.

What we don't like: There's no doubt about it: The keys are too small, and too close together. If you've got modestly-sized fingers, you probably won't find the keyboard be an issue, but for those of us with normal-sized honkers attached to our hands, typing can be pretty tricky. And while the design is nice (especially for a Palm device), it's still pretty thick: Beefier than the BlackJack, iPhone, and Pearl. And while the Palm OS interface is improved over previous Palm devices (particularly the phone part), it's looking increasingly dated. The Web browser, while serviceable, still uses AT&T's EDGE network instead of the faster 3G. There's also a noticeable lag when using the phone: Sometimes you'll wait a full five seconds for it to respond to your input. Annoying.

Does it live up to the hype? If you're riding the AT&T train and want a smartphone that doesn't scream "I wear a suit to work" -- and, for whatever reason, you don't want an iPhone (like, say, its $400 price tag, or perhaps the even more difficult touch-pad typing) -- the Centro may very well be your best choice. It's a more open platform option than Apple's product, which means it has loads of developer- and user-created applications available for download. There's plenty of room for improvement with the Centro, but it's a good step up to the world of mobile e-mail and productivity for anyone who's been using a standard cell phone that only makes phone calls, sends text messages, and takes pictures.

Related Links:

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg on a laptop. Thanks to cheaper chips, more efficient software, and the fact that an increased amount of our computing is done online (meaning your computer doesn't need to be as powerful), plenty of notebooks can be had for less than $500 (in fact, Intel is developing new technology that will help push powerful PCs to the under-$250 price point). We scoured the tech landscape and found five laptops that will do all your basic computing needs, and then some, but still keep your budget balanced. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any Mac-based laptops - even in the used/refurbished bins - but you'll have to take that up with Steve Jobs. In the meantime, check out our picks for best bargain-basement laptops.

The Windows One: Acer Aspire 5315

Acer's full-fledged Vista-enabled mainstream laptop may not be the fastest, sturdiest, or prettiest, but it'll certainly do when you absolutely, positively have to have Windows for less than $500.

Who it's for: Students on a budget who still need Windows-compatible software (such as PowerPoint and Word for class preparation); parents and grandparents who don't want to do much more than word-process, balance the checkbook, or surf the Web.

What we like: The huge 15.4-inch LCD screen is great for movie-watching and slideshows, and the built-in stereo speakers are surprisingly powerful (considering they're made of plastic!). Sure, it's 6.2-pounds -- more than twice as heavy as the MacBook Air -- but that's not as heavy as we expected at this price point. It has three USB ports, which is generous. The keyboard is spacious and comfortable to type on, and includes a one-touch key for wireless and battery management, and a Wi-Fi on/off button. Most other laptops in this price category don't have a DVD/CD-RW drive, so music rippers and DVD watchers will be pleased that the Acer Aspire does have one.

What we don't: With no dual-core processor (just a Celeron 450) and 1-gigabyte of DDR2, this baby can be slow to start and a bit lethargic when running several programs at once. Battery life - at just over two hours - can leave you stranded at the Internet café if you're not near a power outlet. Plus, the plastic casing feels a bit cheap.

Verdict: It does the trick for $500, but if you have an extra couple of Benjamins, go for the Aspire 4710, or any laptop with a dual-core processor.

Cost: $500 (the version we tested out was available exclusively at Wal-Mart for $470, but you can search around online for similar deals).

The Travelodge hotel chain in the United Kingdom is rolling out a new test program aimed at helping people get a good night's sleep. The method for giving guests a better snooze experience? A futuristic set of pajamas made from a material called Dermasilk, which is supposed to feel like a second skin.

According to a statement by Travelodge, the Dermasilk sleep suit "allows the skin to breathe, regulates body temperature (in hot and cold conditions) and maintains the skin's moisture balance." The Dermasilk is made from natural knitted silk, which the hotel chain claims controls body odor and is good for people who may suffer from skin disorders such as eczema and dermatitis, since it reduces the symptoms of itching and scratching.

The chain conducted a survey of 3000 British adults and found that:

23 percent of Brits said they suffer from itchy night clothes which stops them from getting a good night's sleep

Being too hot / cold is a common complaint for Brits with 66 percent confirming their body temperature changes constantly throughout the night which affects their sleep pattern

More people feel too hot (54 percent) in comparison to feeling cold (35 percent) while sleeping

The sleepwear, which looks like something out of a sci-fi movie (maybe 1971's 'THX-1138' starring Robert Duvall), is made up of leggings, a long sleeved tee-shirt, gloves, socks and a facial mask and comes in small, medium, large and extra large sizes. Guests can choose to have the sleepwear provided when they make their hotel reservation, and they get to keep their new jammies if they like the new slumber experience.

What are some other interesting tidbits revealed by Travelodge's survey? Well, women are willing to look less desirable in bed in order to keep warm. Plus, wearing "passion killer" socks are more favored by women at 23 percent, which is more than double in contrast to men wearing socks to bed at just 11 percent. Men are simply more interested in keeping warm.

Travelodge seems quite interested in helping its guests get a good night's sleep, and has a separate program to provide MP3s that you can listen to just before going to bed called "Nodcasts." Titles include:

Assertiveness Nodcast - how to say what you want and get it

Confidence Nodcast - how to get a "can do" attitude

Communication Nodcast - how to make more friends and influence more people

Stress Nodcast - how to combat anxiety and relax

Motivation Nodcast - how to overcome inertia and seize the day

Give them a listen -- you can download the Nodcasts here.

What's a Mako 2.1 THX Sound System?
We got a chance to demo, in our more natural settings (i.e. Josh's office at home), Razer's Mako 2.1 speaker system. For the uninitiated, this 2.1 (two satellite speakers and a subwoofer) sound system uses a unique "Ground Plane" technology developed by THX (the people behind breakthrough cinema sound systems) and Razer (the guys behind all the cool gaming mice and keyboards) that turns any flat surface into a giant reflecting speaker.

Initial Impressions
The results are impressive, and we're going to have a hard time going back to our old-school standard speakers when our date with the Mako's ends. Bass response is smooth and musical -- as opposed to boomy -- while the highs are clean. These speakers might actually be a bit too clean, as we began to hear inadequacies in our 196-bit (the rate at which they were sampled) MP3 and AAC files from our iTunes library.

As far as ergonomics and design, the Mako is super minimal in a matte-black finish. Since the speakers don't actually look like speakers, the effect is clean, if not a bit cold. The system's touch-sensitive remote allows one to pack away the subwoofer out of sight under a desk. However, its super-shiny surface is a quick finger print magnet, undermining its cool blue glow. We also wish the thing was wireless, but then again, we wish virtually everything was wireless.

So, Is it Worth It?
Overall, we love this sound system. The Mako produces deep, rich sound that's fair to your music in a surprisingly small package. If you're looking for a serious computer and gaming sound system, this one is hard to beat unless you're a real stickler for 5.1 surround sound. As for games, the system has a serious pop that felt great without coming off as aggressively loud.

As we mentioned in our preview, there are limitations with the Mako 2.1. The system only has three inputs -- two 1/8-inch (headphone-size) line ins, and a standard RCA phono plug input on the subwoofer unit. This means the Mako has no digital inputs for more modern sound cards with digital outs. In addition, the Mako uses proprietary speaker cables (see the gallery) that will limit how far you can spread the satellites. Finally, the system will run $399 when it hits retail. While the THX-certified sound is upscale and (to our ears) worth it, not everyone wants to spend that much on a 2.1 sound system.

If you're serious about sound, the Mako is THX sonic bliss.

Gallery: Razer Mako 2.1 Advanced Desktop Audio

Related Links:
When we first reported about the upcoming launch of Dr. Dre's Beats high-end headphones, we expected a mix of both parties' aptitude for doing things big and right. We got a chance to take the new skullpods for a test run last night, and our expectations were spot-on.

Sound Quality
Without getting too technical, we can confidently say that the Beats handled all the frequencies thrown at them without flapping on the bass or screeching on the treble. They have a definitive "warmth" to them that may make hardcore audiophiles scream such things as "accuracy" and "flat response," but, frankly, these headphones are designed to sound good on subways and streets. We convinced the Monsters to let us try out some of our own old '70s and '80s music just to see how the Beats handled that -- we weren't disappointed, although they behaved a lot more evenly with modern hip-hop and R&B. All in all, DJs and club-goers will absolutely love the sound quality.

Design & Comfort
These things scream class. With a shiny exterior and high-end ear cups, the Beats are seriously comfortable. While we only had them on for about 10 minutes, we experienced none of the ear fatigue or "hot ears" that other, less well-designed head cans exhibit. They come in a nice, sturdy case and fold up with an assuring "click." The Beats aren't small, though, so don't expect to just throw them in a pocket like you can in-ear headphones. What's more, big headphones like these are questionable as gym accessories.

iPhone Compatibility
Instead of including a call/send/end button and microphone right on the Beasts' cables, Monster has you using a cable adapter that makes things a little annoying, with several wires hanging from your ears and multiple connections to maintain. Performance on calls was also questionable, as we experienced radio interference from the phone's antenna. Hopefully Monster will take the time to add some shielding if they really want to call the Beats iPhone-compatible.

So Are They Worth It?
At $399, these aren't the headphones for just anyone. They are, however, perfect for street-smart, style-conscious, serious hip hop and club music listeners with a little extra cash and a penchant for high-end, high-impact sound. They sound every bit as good and loud as Dr. Dre promised they would, and they look great.

As mentioned, hardcore audiophiles may be disappointed in their hip-hop-friendly bass warmth. Overall, these are a solid entry into the crowded, but long-in-the-tooth high-end headphone set. It's nice to finally see some innovation in a genre of headphones that hasn't seen anything new and exciting in quite some time.

Related Links:
And, given the size of the little white box, the Wii seems like it would be the perfect thing to throw in a bag and take a long. However, that long and fragile looking sensor bar stuck to the top of your TV with double-sided tape doesn't exactly lend itself to easy portability.

Enter the Sensor Wiire, a third-party accessory that replaces the stock sensor bar with something that's a lot easier to take along. Instead of a solid bar, the Sensor Wire has two small boxes that clip together. Held end-to-end they are about the size of a pack of gum, and combined with a retractable cord, the whole package hardly takes up any room at all.

It uses a similar design found in many wired portable mice, with a small spring-loaded wheel winding the cable up to keep things neat while traveling. However, that wheel leads to the one and only drawback of the thing -- it's not long enough. The sensor wire is only two feet long, very short compared to the ten feet of wire attached to the stock sensor bar. That's not enough to even reach the top of most HDTVs.

So, while you're a little restricted in how you setup your Wii when using this, installation is otherwise a breeze. Just plug it into the same stock bar port on the back of your Wii, extend the cable, set the sensors down in front of the television, and you're ready to play. It works well. For those who are constantly taking their Wiis on-the-go and would rather avoid tangle-prone cords, the Sensor Bar may be a worthwhile purchase, but everyone else will find the two-feet of cable somewhat useless and certainly no replacement for the stock bar.

Gallery: Wii Sensor Wiire

Related Links:
That game is out, so now you, too, can bust some moves on either your Nintendo DS or Sony PSP. But, while the movie is consistently good from beginning to end, this game doesn't quite match that consistency.

'Napoleon Dynamite' is a bag full of mini-games -- some good, some bad. The mini-games ask you to do all sorts of tasks from the movie. You'll be flinging lasagna at Tina the (fat lard) laama while dodging the spit she shoots at you. You'll get into a football throwing contest with Uncle Rico, then drag an action figure by a string behind your school bus and try to avoid it getting caught by dogs. And, of course, there's a 'Dance Dance Revolution'-style game where you get to bust a move on the stage and impress your friends.

There are 20 games on the DS version and 30 on the PSP, but sadly less than half of those are worth your time. It's a constant up and down ride from good game to bad, all the while unlocking silly little prizes like costumes for Napoleon to wear. Graphically the game is solid, with each character depicted as paper-doll cutouts with giant, oversized heads, and each menu and loading screen is covered with sketches of "ligers" and such.

So, it definitely looks and feels like the film, and fans of that film will have fun with this one. Plus, at $20 for the PSP version, it's certainly priced right. But, with so many of the mini-games feeling like a chore more than a gas, it's hard to recommend to anyone but those who are still wearing a VOTE FOR PEDRO shirt.

Related Links:
A reader writes: I'm getting ready to go on vacation for the holidays, and I want to bring along a small point-and-shoot digital camera. Thing is, I want the thing to be able to do a little bit of everything, so I'm willing to spend around $300. I'm mostly concerned about picture quality, fast movement, and lots of flexibility in terms of lighting situations as I'll be taking pictures both during the day and at night, inside and outside.

Hey reader: There are plenty of $300 point-and-shoot digital cameras out there, so we understand your confusion. Sounds like you need a feature-packed camera that won't break the wallet -- or the fanny pack -- for your vacation.

We recently got to play around with Panasonic's new Lumix DMC-FX33 camera, and despite the crazy confusing name, it's a great little unit. It's super small, has a big 2.5-inch screen and has plenty of scene modes for all your vacation-taking needs.

One thing that really sets this one apart is how easy it is to use. If you want to turn off the flash, just push a button. If you want to take a picture inside and don't want to think about the flash and ISO settings, just put the camera in auto mode and it will adjust everything for you. All that said, if you're a bit of a camera geek like we are, you can manually set just about everything.

What makes this camera stand out is Panasonic's use of 28mm Leica optics, which are some of the best lenses in the biz. Typically, Leica lenses are only available in much more expensive cameras.

Outside of that, this camera has all the standard features you would want in this price range. It does 8.1 megapixels, has a wide 28mm lens, uses inexpensive SD cards, does 4x optical zoom, has a macro setting (for close-up pictures of flowers and what-not), a widescreen video mode and this it's pretty quick when you need to take multiple pictures. Finally, for fashionistas, the Lumix comes in an assortment of colors: black, silver, blue, and the brown seen above.

Related Links:
