It appears that the high-definition disc format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is nearing the mop-up stages, as Blu-Ray sales have accounted for 93% of the market share for set-top players since the second week of January. Coming on the heels of Warner's announcement to support Blu-ray rather than its rival, HD-DVD, these figured indicate that HD-DVD could be in its death throes. Interestingly, sales were almost evenly split during the first week of January, before the Warner announcement.

While the numbers suggest that the general public is taking the pragmatic approach in supporting the supposed victor, HD-DVD nevertheless continues to insist on business as usual. One aspect of the issue to consider is whether or not the mainstream media bears some responsibility for the skewed sales, as most media outlets reported the Warner story as the nail in HD-DVD's coffin. Did the media "make" news which the public followed? You decide, but it may be a moot point if Blu-Ray continues to enjoy its current market share for DVD players.

From The Digital Bits Via Engadget

Related Links:

In fact, expect to see just the opposite of that. HD-DVD continue on as an underground favorite format, much like Betamax did in the 70s and laser discs did in the 90s. Remember laser discs, the giant optical discs that came before DVD, the stuff of early home theater buffs who could tell you a thing or two about digital mastering way before half of Hollywood was even Bar Mitzvah'd? No? How about beta, the superior tape format that Sony wanted you to buy instead of VHS?

I originally thought HD-DVD was completely done for before the Consumer Electronics Show. Warner's Blu-Ray-exclusive announcement and the HD-DVD group's decision to back out of their keynote made it sound like they would go away with a whimper. On the final day of the conference, however, I took one last walk by the HD-DVD booth just to see what was up. After all, I'm a sucker for a good heartbreak story.

"So I looked on bestbuy.com this morning," began the booth attendant, speaking to three half-asleep attendees who, by my estimation, were there more for the chair rest than the presentation. "You can now buy an HD-DVD drive for $179. That also comes with ten free discs. Ten free discs! That easily makes HD-DVD the best deal in high definition."

The guy had a point. Think about it -- for $179, you can get a high-end HD-DVD player that will also upscale your regular DVDs to high-definition resolution. It will also play your Super-Audio CDs. You also get ten free HD-DVD discs. Go try to buy ten new regular-definition DVDs for $179 -- I dare you. That evening I was ordering an HD-DVD drive from bestbuy.com. Call me a vulture if you will, but I'll be enjoying this winter in high-def heaven. Heck - I might even cancel my Netflix account for a few months and save another $50 or so.

That closing value on the HD-DVD format really is hard to beat. Even if another HD-DVD title never comes out, the closing cost of the format -- along with its hardware -- is easily worth the cost to anyone with a high-definition television. Is it an investment for the far future? Not so much, but most of us who already have home theaters and high-definition televisions aren't exactly known for our electronics long-term investment acumen -- we'll all have new TVs, receivers, and speakers in a few years anyway.

Anyway, with Apple's new iTunes Movie Rentals and NetFlix opening up the "View It Now" service to unlimited views, disc-based movies' days are numbered.

Enjoy the fire sale. I know I will.

Related Links:

In the beginning, Bluetooth headsets were a bit off-putting. You stuck one in your ear, called a friend on your mobile phone, and watched as people on the street looked on as you had a conversation -- seemingly with yourself. But things have changed drastically since then. These small, wireless gadgets are now ubiquitous, gracing the earlobes of everyone from the guy on the next treadmill to your grandma in her car. So what are the coolest, most innovative we saw at CES that'll find their way to store shelves this year? Take a look at our five favorites:

BlueAnt Wireless V1: Forget playing with buttons, checking on blinking lights or messing with your cell phone when you want to make a call. The BlueAnt V1 is the first completely voice controlled Bluetooth headset and it's superneat. With just one button to activate it -- all you do is talk and it will talk right back. Want to call the operator? Just speak and your wish is its command. Speed dial has never been so easy, either. Using advanced Voice Recognition and Voice Synthesis technology, the V1 also has dual microphones and proprietary Voice Isolation Technology, which allows the headset to hear you clearly and provides amazing noise reduction, echo cancellation and even protection from wind. Small and lightweight, the V1 gets up to six hours of talk time or 200 hours of standby with one battery charge. And all this for just $119.
The market for HDTVs is flooded with competing technologies and not to mention perplexing acronyms and abbreviations -- DLP, LCD, OLED, Plasma, SED. Now you can add Laser TV to your list of display technologies to know. Mitsubishi unveiled a 65-inch laser television at an event during this week's CES -- and people at this week's CES show were buzzing about the incredible color and contrast.

Mitsubishi isn't revealing details about exactly how it works, but we do know it is based on a rear projection system, meaning that this is never going to be as thin as those sexy OLEDs on display. And who knows what the future holds for big and bulky projection TVs, whose stars are falling almost as quickly as those of HD-DVD. But the laser TV does have a leg up in the image quality department. Apparently, colors were so intense and contrast so dramatic that Greg Adler at PC World described it as "artificial" looking.

Pricing isn't available, but Mitsubishi plans to have the displays on the market by fall of 2008.

From Engadget

Related links:

Soon it may be easier to list the companies that don't have navigation devices in their roster of products than those who do.

If the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show proved anything about the personal navigation category, it's that finding your way from point A to point B is what manufacturer's think will get you to find your way to the store to buy a new GPS device.

Garmin and TomTom, the two leading personal navigation device (PND) makers, are certainly looking over their shoulders as major brands such as Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer introduce new devices. Rather than being simply test products for a burgeoning market, the new GPS devices by these major cross-category consumer electronics companies are serious contenders, offer a plethora of the latest features.

Nevertheless, even upstart companies such as the one below are adding innovative features into the mix. The result? There has never been a better year to take the plunge and buy yourself a GPS device.

If you're in the market for a new GPS device this year, you should take a look at our roundup. We've compiled a list of the most anticipated new navigation devices coming out in 2008, along with release dates.

It offers real-time traffic data based on the position of other DASH-equipped cars (plus data from a host of other sources). So what can you look forward to in 2008 for your in-car media system? More integration with digital media devices (ie. iPods), better sounding compact speakers, lower prices on those high-end all-in-one units, and technologies to enhance the quality of the sound, not just the volume.

More than anything it seems like 2008 will be the year that iPod integration and Bluetooth become standard on all but the lowest-end systems. Every all-in-one system from Kenwood and Pioneer featured the abilities, and almost every standard CD player system provided iPod connectivity. Some of the more basic models have even been fitted with Bluetooth. That means you can say goodbye to those headsets that make you look like a jerk.

As for those all-in-one units that combine GPS with audio and video functions, look for prices to continue to take a nosedive. Prices start at $1,000 for units from Kenwood, Pioneer, and Alpine, but we expect by the end of the year prices will fall even further.

Meanwhile, Pioneer says it is going back to it roots: sound quality. iPods allow us to carry our entire music collections in our back pocket, but the problem with digital audio is that it's compressed in order to make the file smaller. Pioneer is using a technology they call ASR (Advanced Sound Retrieval) to restore some of the lost frequency range due to compression, and after a demo we were quite impressed.

Lastly, as with everything else, thin is in when it comes to car speakers. Just about every company that makes car speakers was showing off shallow subwoofers for those who don't want to gut or mod their car to get amazing bass.

Gallery: Car Stereo Trends

Related links:

Someone here at the Switched has a bit of an obsession, if you hadn't noticed yet. We just can't help but cover every novelty or development in the world of paper shredders. Sadly there was nothing as powerful as this $30,000 shredder on display at CES, but there were a few noteworthy entries into the world of document destruction.

Whether they were pretty, paranoid or just plain weird, they made it to our Class of 2008: Paper Shredders Edition gallery.

Canon this week introduced a lineup of new consumer camcorders with the moniker "VIXIA". This line includes a dual solid state (no hard drives or moving parts) unit that on the face of it is quite impressive.

The HF10 Dual Flash Memory camcorder uses both a 16 gigabyte internal flash drive and a removable SDHC memory card to store your captured video and still images. Flash memory is good because unlike a hard drive, optical disc, or video tape, there are no moving parts in that part of the camcorder mechanism, so it requires less energy and has less chance of failure (with normal use). The internal memory can capture up to six hours of high definition video.

The HF10 and another unit, the HF100 (which only has the SDHC card slot), both feature 24p cinema mode for capturing movie-like images and a 30p progressive mode, which is good for capturing fast-motion action like sports.

The HV30 HD camcorder introduced here seems almost quaint in that it uses MiniDV cassette tapes, although its predecessor, the HV20, did a nice job with high definition video capture.

The HF10 Dual Flash Memory will be available in April for $1,099. The HF100 is also coming in April and will carry an $899 price tag. Finally, the HV30 is coming out in February and will set you back $999.

We'll let you know what we think once we get our hands on the set for testing.

Your heroes at Switched came away impressed after our hands-on with Philips' latest high definition (HD) LCD television sets last night. Forgive us for jumping to the dessert course of the meal, but we think it best to go into detail about the Ultimate Dream TV, the top-of-the-line product from Philip's new 7000 Series that is being hailed as a winner of the 2008 CEA Innovations Award for Design and Engineering.

Continue reading Hands-On With Philips' New Dream HD LCD TV

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Alon Avdi

Flavored Mini Portable USB Drives Provide Tasty Back-up Options

Filed under: Computers, Peripherals, CES 2008

We've been reporting how Green Technology is making the headlines at this year's Consumer Electronics Showcare. Whether developing atmosphere and energy-friendly cars that run on hydrogen fuel cells or batteries made with no lead, cadmium or mercury, businesses are increasingly becoming eco-conscious as they make new products for the consumer. These sometimes wacky, sometimes futuristic items offer sources of clean, power-conserving energy while minimizing harm to the environment. Check out the gallery for a look at how green things have become.

Continue >>

Gallery: Green Technology Abounds at 2008 CES in Las Vegas

Related Links:

Our never-ending search for items at the Consumer Electronics Show that are true statement pieces continues with a visit to KEF, maker of the Muon -- perhaps ironically named since a muon is a smaller particle than a quark, yet these speakers, evidenced by the picture above, are clearly not tiny.

Nor is their price tag. At $140,000 for the pair, the Muon speakers are meant for only the most discerning audiophile, for whom price is obviously no matter.

Only 100 pairs of the speakers will be made, according to Johan Coorg, marketing director for KEF. "The one-hundred and first person who wants one will just have to be disappointed," he said.

Why make speakers like these?

"This actually started as a testbed project for our engineers," Coorg said. "British audio has always been very well respected. These speakers now are the leading edge in real cool design. It's no longer acceptable to buy a square box anymore."

Though they have a somewhat organic shape, these speakers are made of aluminum, shaped and made strong through a process called "superforming."

The result is five-hundred combined pounds of visually arresting listening delight.

From KEF.

Most of us never think twice about our car stereos. They come preinstalled in your automobile, and you take it for granted. But there is a whole subculture of people whose greatest pleasure in life is crafting absurd mobile entertainment centers that put many peoples' home theaters to shame.

TVs galore, more sub-woofers than your bowels could possibly stand, and chains of amplifiers that drive volume up to building crumbling levels -- these are some of the specs we encountered while walking the mobile tech areas at CES.

We may well have suffered permanent hearing damage to bring you this massive photo collection of the most intense displays of car audio and video power at CES. A few of them even made this guy's stereo look tame by comparison. Take a look!

We couldn't stop drooling long enough for the Samsung reps to let us near this lust-worthy beauty. Thankfully, the folks over at Engadget were able pick there jaws up off the floor and snag some photos of this ultra thin, environmentally-friendly display.

It's only a prototype right now, and Samsung has no immediate plans to bring these to consumers, but we're sure plans will be announced soon enough. Samsung won't want to leave Sony alone in the OLED market for long, though. So head on over to Engadget to check out what is most certainly the future of TV.

Convenience is the name of the game if you plan on using one of Lexar's new wireless SD (Secure Digitalo) memory cards in your digital camera later this year. The new SD card, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, is Wi-Fi capable, using a technology developed by a company called Eye-Fi to wirelessly transfer images from the card to your computer, a photo-sharing Web site or a retail kiosk. Eye-Fi released its own card late last year, but Lexar is the first company we've seen that's using the Eye-Fi technology in one of its own cards.

While some digital still cameras are starting to have wireless capabilities themselves -- Panasonic, for example, announced a Wi-Fi capable camera earlier this week -- most consumers own digicams that don't have this very convenient feature. This wireless SD card essentially turns any compatible camera into a wireless device.

After taking pictures, you go to within range of an open wireless, or Wi-Fi, hotspot, and your photos are automatically uploaded to your computer or to photo sharing Web sites such as Kodak Gallery, Wal-Mart Digital Photo Center, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Picasa, flickr and Facebook. Your computer doesn't even need to be turned on for the process to work.

No word on pricing or availability yet. We've been playing around with the Eye-Fi for a couple of weeks. When we've managed to get it to work, we love it, but as with all things Wi-Fi, it can be temperamental. Still, it beats having to carry a memory card adapter or USB cord around all day.

Riddle us this: what's better than a laptop with one screen? A laptop with two screens!

eDetail was at CES this week showing off its award-winning dual screened computer tablet.

The unique dual multi-touch screened monster is primarily targeted at professionals and commercial applications, but the company is producing a 14-inch model aimed more at consumers. Professionals can use the laptop to give mobile presentations, showing customers a slide show or questionnaire on the larger front screen while controlling it all from the smaller back screen. The laptop also has a programmable hot key that can be used for launching a presentation.

The laptop has a built-in camera and microphone for video conferencing. One can imagine flipping the top screen up to watch a movie or opening iTunes iwhile using a word processor or browsing the internet on the main screen.

The 14-inch model is expected to retail for about $1,200 loaded with Windows XP, 512 megabytes of RAM, and an 80 gigabyte hard drive. The one questionable decision was going with AMD's Geode processor, the same chip in the OLPC XO. The Geode allows the eDetail computer to stay cool even with-out fans and last all day without recharging, but the Geode is a little underpowered for running Windows.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Green Technology is all the rage. It seems that companies are increasingly embracing an environmentally friendly approach to product development. From hydrogen-powered cars to Freeplay Energy's solar-powered radios, it is clear that technological advances are paving the way for a healthier Mother Earth. We particularly like Hong Kong-based Chung Pak Battery Works, which has removed many of the most harmful elements from its Vinnic and Vinergy product lines without sacrificing power output. For this reason, we enthusiastically support Chung Pak's Green Batteries. (We also enthusiastically support their commercial, so click the image above to watch.)

The latest Vinnic innovation is the No Lead Added Zinc Chloride Battery Series, while Chung Pak's completely new line, Vinergy, offers a Mercury and Cadmium free alkaline button cell and battery. The result is an array of different eco-conscious batteries that have no Lead, Mercury or Cadmium added. A more complete list of available Chung Pak products includes several series of the aforementioned alkaline and zinc chloride batteries, in addition to alkaline/silver-oxide button cells; high voltage, alkaline, cylindrical button cells; Ni-MH rechargeable, cylindrical and button cells; battery packs and chargers; and even lithium batteries. Vinnic and Vinergy merchandise is sold in the United States through Evergreen (C.P.) USA Inc.

Related Links:

The fact that Intel has started using a 45-nanometer manufacturing process may not mean much to you. In fact there's a chance you're staring at your computer screen right now, head titled, with a perplexed look on your face. But it's ok, we at Switched are here to help clear up what the new processors mean for you.

45 nanometers refers to the smallest possible features a processor can have. This is made possible by a new manufacturing technique. By comparison, the human hair can be as thick as 181 micrometers, or about 4000 times larger than the smallest features on the new Intel processors. Intel also introduced new a new transistor technology called high-k which reduces the amount of leakage, or wasted electricity. This new technology has been applied to processors across the Intel lineup, from laptop chips, to servers, to the company's new Menlow processors (pictured above) for tiny Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPC) and Mobile Internet Devices (MID).

So what exactly does this mean for you, the consumer? It means faster, smaller, cooler computers that use less energy. Laptops that you can actually use in your lap because they no longer get hot enough to cook an egg on, MIDs that will approach the iPhone in size, and computers so fast that most current games won't put a strain on them are all on their way. Intel started shipping processors based on the new manufacturing process back in November, but many companies waited until this week's Consumer Electronics Showcase to unveil products based on them. The bottom line is that this new technology is good for the consumer, but bad for AMD, Intel's main rival.

Related links:

Binghamton, N.Y.-based McIntosh, maker of high-end home theater equipment for some truly demanding audio aficionados, is showing a $190,000 home theater system here at the Consumer Electronics Show -- a set up which they call, simply, "The Reference System." That $190,000 is just under the $240,000 national average for the cost of an entire home in the United States.

Each tweeter (the speakers that produce higher frequencies) in this system has 110 drivers, for example. Spreading the sound output among so many gives a much sweeter tweeter, so to speak. But that's hard for a system to manage, and creates the need for some seriously complex (and expensive) components.

"It takes a lot of power to produce sound that gives you the same type of experience you'd have if you were in a concert hall," said McIntosh's James Ludoviconi. "Despite this, the system itself is extremely quiet, so the only sound you hear is from the source content." Each 2,000-watt amp utilizes something called "quad-balancing" to eliminate the noise a powerful piece of equipment might otherwise make on its own. Quite a feat of engineering.

Frankly, we were impressed just looking at the set up.

Better get a bigger piggy bank.

General Motors Chairman and CEO Rich Wagoner used his keynote address at this year's CES in Las Vegas to outline his company's vision of the future of car technology. The presentation was the first ever by an automobile manufacturer at CES. The most significant item Wagoner touched upon was GM's answer to environmental concerns and the need for alternative sources of energy to power automobiles in the coming years. The answer, Wagoner declared, could be found in the 5th generation fuel cell concept vehicle that rolled out onto the stage with him, a sleek SUV called the Cadillac Provoq.

The Provoq, an impressive looking silver specimen, relies on EFlex technology, using GM's latest generation of hydrogen fuel cells and an Advanced Lithium Ion Battery to power it. The result is a vehicle that can achieve top speeds of 100 miles per hour, go from 0 to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, get 300 miles per tank of hydrogen and produces no emissions. In addition, the car comes complete with a solar panel on the roof to power accessories and a front grill with louvers that optimize the vehicle's aerodynamics.

EFlex technology - that is, electronically driven cars that have flexible power-deriving capabilities, will function by charging from an electronic source, combining that with a small ethanol or diesel engine, or a hydrogen fuel cell. EFlex allows vehicles to drive up to 40 miles with a single charge from an electronic source. Since most commuters only drive within that range on a daily basis, the zero emission product is astounding. Should the car owner need to travel further, the engine generator uses the other flexible sources of power to allow the car to run at a ridiculous 150 miles per gallon!

Until such cars are available, Wagoner pointed to the FlexFuel models that run on up to 85% ethanol, whose production GM will increase to 50% of all of its cars by 2012. The country will need to have more E85 fuel pumps, however, if the ethanol-based system is to be effective nationwide. Over the next four years, GM also plans to introduce 16 new hybrid models.

Wagoner dished out another hint of the future when he discussed the potential for cars to drive themselves. He shared that GM recently won the DARPA competition, a challenge in which the Chevy Tahoe "Boss" navigated on its own a 60 mile course that simulated urban conditions in under six hours.

OnStar, GM's telematics system, also had its share of developments. The 8th generation of OnStar will soon provide vital information to rescuers following a collision, such as what part of the car was hit and how hard, as well as whether it rolled over. Furthermore, OnStar will also feature Turn By Turn Navigation, a new directions service. Another service coming includes a partnership with MapQuest to add a "send to OnStar" function. Perhaps the most important OnStar upgrade, however, was the "stolen vehicle slowdown" feature, which will gradually decrease power to suspected stolen vehicles upon a request by law enforcement. GM also plans on introducing OnStar in China this year.

Finally, Mr. Wagoner introduced V2V technology that will allow cars to communicate with each other in order to avoid collisions. Using transponders and GPS technology, one car will alert another behind it to a sudden stop, allowing the second car to automatically begin slowing down even if the driver is unaware of the situation.

Gallery: The Cadillac Provoq

Related Links:

In the world of computing, small is in. Be they laptops or desktops, PCs keep getting smaller. And that's not a bad thing. Smaller means a laptop is easier to toss in a backpack without feeling like you're carrying a computer, or that a desktop can be moved to the living room without looking too tacky. Bottom line: Smaller PCs can be hidden completely from view.

We took a walk around CES collecting shots of the tiniest PCs we could find. Including some that make the Mac Mini look downright bulky.

Back before Atari and Nintendo, when kids had to use their darn imaginations to play a game of football (we say while holding our canes outstretched), there was a game called vibrating (or "electric") football. All you older kids will be glad (or horrified) to learn that a company called Excalibur is bringing back the electric, buzzing table-top game, complete with an NFL license.

For you young'ns, electric football was originally created in 1947 when it was, clearly, one of the most high-tech games a kid could have. It was an electric game that consisted of a plug-in tin football field and a bunch of little football player figures. The vibration made the players move in all sorts of random directions, and the outstretched arms of the players made them "lock" in what we pretended was a tackle (though it looked more like a do-se-do). Yes, that's pretty much all it did. We got a chance to check it out at this year's Consumer Electronics Showcase and, yes, that's pretty much all it still does.

But we don't care. Low tech? Sure. In a world of polygons, real-time shading, and online Madden games, this is an exciting, refreshing kick in the pants, and we're psyched to see it make a return.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Fruhlinger

The iPhone Has One Touch Screen -- the DMedia Phone Has Two.

Filed under: Car Tech, Cell Phones, CES 2008

Add dMedia to the list of companies that have caught WiMax fever. The company's next-gen WiMax-based cell phone, the F200, is sure to inspire gadget lust in even the most hardened of cynics.

Now that WiMax -- the next-gen, wide-area wireless network -- is beginning to catch fire across the globe, companies like dMedia are rushing to get innovative products to the market that will take advantage of the new mobile broadband technology.

The F200 is candy bar styled phone with dual touch screens that have standard cell phone call and end buttons and a directional pad. The screens can operate independently or in conjunction with each other, meaning you can use the built in GPS on the top screen to get turn-by-turn directions, while browsing the Internet or placing a call on the bottom screen over WiMax or a standard GSM or EDGE cell phone network such as AT&T or T Mobile.

In addition to GPS, the F200 features an electronic compass and a G sensor for aiding in navigation even when GPS satellites are unavailable, such as when driving through a tunnel.

Of course, the phone also has the standard features you'd expect on a high end phone -- Bluetooth, two-megapixel camera, etc. Pricing or launch date are not available, but dMedia claims to have a working prototype, though it was only showing a mock up at CES.

Asus isn't just in the market of making laptops and computer parts. Asus also makes an award winning line of Internet radios. At this year's CES, the company is showing off two new members of its AIR (Asus Internet Radio) family.

The AIR 3 allows you to pull in radio streams over Wi-Fi from all around the globe, without a computer. The internal database of over 10,000 streams is updated regularly, weeding out those that have fallen silent and adding new ones as they go live. The AIR 3 also has a built in iPod dock, a USB port for playing tracks off of a Flash drive, as well as weather forecasting and stock tracking widgets.

The AIR 5 is meant for a component stereo system. The screen-less Wi-Fi device has the same USB and Internet radio capabilities as the AIR 3, but also includes a hard drive for storing music locally. The included remote allows you to navigate your media and Internet streams via the LCD display.

Prices were not available, but expect to see the AIR 3 in May, and the AIR 5 in July.

Related Links:

'Guitar Hero' may be fun and cool, but one thing it certainly can't do is teach you how to actually play guitar. In fact, the connection between playing 'Guitar Hero' and actually playing guitar is tenuous at best. Just ask Slash.

That's where Music Wizard is hoping to one up the gaming phenomena by taking the basic concepts of 'Guitar Hero' and applying them to an actual guitar. 'Guitar Wizard' should drop in August with a suggested retail price of $149.95 when packaged with the Sound Tech Interface that gets mounted on a guitar or $299.95 with student quality electric guitar.

Different colors and shapes are used to represent the different frets on the strings. Slowly the game evolves, from what is essentially an extremely complex 'Guitar Hero, until you're no longer playing a game, but instead reading music. Sadly, Music Wizard's creators dont have the deep pockets that Activision has, so don't expect to jam along to original performances of 'Godzilla' or 'Welcome to the Jungle.' Instead you'll have to make do with MIDI versions of the tracks. Upside, less red tape involved so you can download thousands of tracks from WizardTunes.com. Down side, it's like jamming along to a Super Nintendo.

Related Links:

Every January in Las Vegas, the latest and greatest, thinnest, biggest, and weirdest new TVs make their debuts at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES). More than 150,000 people descend on the City of Sin to see what consumer electronics manufacturers have in store for the upcoming year. Switched has been roaming the floors of the Las Vegas Convention Center, looking at TV after TV after TV. The big story this year is super-slim TVs, some of which are literally almost paper thin. But as usual, we found some other superlatives. Check out our gallery for the latest, techiest, biggest, most expensive, cheapest, and weirdest TVs out there.

Okay, so how mind-boggling is this 150-inch plasma TV from Panasonic? It's one of a kind, and we don't know how much it will cost when it hits stores, but we're sure you'll need a mighty big McMansion to get this in your living room. (That's Josh, by the way, who's 5'10".

Yesterday, PlanOn, the company that brought you the DocuPen scanner writing utensil, released for retail a one-of-a-kind portable printer, called the PrintStik. The tiny, mobile device, oblong and light, is a Bluetooth-enabled development that allows users to print e-mails and images from a smart phone, laptop or PDA. The technology is particularly useful for those of you who get annoyed with wires running wild when you're on the go, or for the professional who hates having to suffer in line behind Larry the Molasses Executive at those business centers just to print out a couple of pages.

The PrintStik is a self-contained unit, meaning you don't have to lug the 20 sheets of paper that fit inside. It prints at a leisurely three pages per minute, with the only other drawback being that you are not going to get a sheet of paper that might have come out of the printer at home. Instead, you will get thin, ticker-type sheets set with ink that looks like it came out of a random cash register.

Obviously, this product is not meant to turn out the annual report while you're driving to work. Instead, it is best suited for printing out things like directions or an E-mail from your handheld device.

We know, we know -- where and when, right? Expect to pay $299 for the PrintStik when you visit planon.com.

Related Links:
