Sure, you've heard of Earth Day, but have you heard of Earth Hour? No, it isn't just a more abbreviated time of environmental remembrance for those with particularly busy schedules. It's a global event organized by the World Wildlife Fund and hosted annually on the last Saturday of every March -- that just happens to be tonight.

The event started in 2007, when 2.2 million Sydney, Australia residents turned out their lights for an hour. It has been growing ever since and this year people worldwide are asked to put out any non-essential lights tonight from 8:30 until 9:30. That's local time, to be clear, so no worries about daylight savings or trying to figure out when sundown is in Australia.

There seems to be quite a bit of traction behind the event this year, with even Google getting in to the action. And we think you should too -- it's certainly easy enough. Just remember: only turn off the non-essential lights. Headlights definitely do not fall in that group. Where would we be without hangovers? Aspirin sales would be lower, worker productivity on Monday mornings would be higher, and the cinematic masterpiece 'The Hangover' would be a predictable documentary about a bachelor party in Vegas. This, dear readers, is the future if extra-oxygenated Korean booze catches on worldwide.

It's the result of research by Kwang-il Kwon and Hye Gwang Jeong at Chungnam National University. In Korea, oxygen-infused alcohol is quite popular, much as soda with carbon dioxide is stateside. The scientists found that, while the inebriation caused by these beverages is just as strong as plain old beer, people who drink oxygenated alcohol recover more quickly and, most importantly, suffer far less severe hangovers.
Continue reading Oxygenated Ale Promises All of the Drunk, None of the Hangover

Oxygenated Ale Promises All of the Drunk, None of the Hangover originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 14:45:00 EST.

It looks like Oprah isn't the only one loving on Skype. The service, which allows users to make free calls to other users over the Internet, and to make ridiculously cheap calls to actual phones, just received a major boost thanks to Verizon. The carrier, which you would think might see Skype as something of a competitor, will now be allowing its subscribers to make Skype calls from their smartphones -- without using any of their minutes!

It will work through an app made available to BlackBerry and Android users. Enabling you to see your Skype contacts and call them directly through the phone, the app will also let you make international calls to any number using SkypeOut. Again, no Verizon Wireless minutes will be used; it'll be purely data. What the app won't do is allow you to make calls through Skype to domestic telephones, but that's hardly a deal-breaker. The apps will launch to subscribers sometime in March, and we're going to go ahead and predict it'll be quite popular.
Share

If you've wondered just what kind of an effect Netflix's "Watch Instantly" service has had on the company's bottom line, the latest financial reports should take care of that. The home of the red envelope threw down all its numbers yesterday, thrilling investors and techies alike as it revealed that half of its subscribers now regularly stream content online.

That's a 20-percent jump from this time last year, and, while much of that increase is thanks to the dedicated Roku Player, increasingly Netflix-ready video game consoles (most recently the Wii) have surely delivered a huge boost, too. The 20-percent jump is significant, but we don't think that number is finished growing. Neither does CEO Reed Hastings, who says he expects the company to "extend [its] operating momentum."
Continue reading Over Half of Netflix Viewers Too Lazy to Walk to the Mailbox

Over Half of Netflix Viewers Too Lazy to Walk to the Mailbox originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 09:37:00 EST.

Of all the Internet memes that have come and gone in the years we've been online, few have provided more laughs than LOLCats -- the bizarre but compelling act of taking silly pictures of cats and applying even sillier captions. While there is some historic basis to the trend, it was all created by Happycat -- at least, it was according to this family tree created by a student named Helene Dams at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart.

Helene has designed a sort of fanciful conceptualization tying the most popular LOLCats together, called 'I Can Has History.' Sometimes the family ties here are logical, like Limecat being the father of Lemoncat and Orangecat, but the relation between others is a little less clear, like Hulk Cat spawning Groovy Cat. We won't argue with the means, we're just here to laugh at the results.
Ever wonder what it'd be like to look like someone else; to exist as another person and mingle among their friends invisibly? A number of AT&T mobile users have had that experience lately -- at least virtually, with the network inexplicably redirecting users into other peoples' Facebook accounts.

Curiously AT&T's network was swapping cookies around, so that if two people signed on to Facebook at nearly the same time they'd wind up getting their log-in information misplaced. This lead to some confusing times for users and, more importantly, some grave security concerns. For its part, AT&T says that this occurred in "a limited number of instances" and that the problem is being fixed. Exactly how limited the problem is, though, and how soon it will be fixed remains to be seen.

There is some good news: this transference of identities was only temporary, meaning after logging out and back in again the affected folks were restored to their previous, comfortable identities. [From: Boston.com]

Update: According to CNET, AT&T has fixed the issue.
We've seen some crazy baby tech in the past, including a Linux-powered baby rocker and a supposed cry translator. We've even seen an MP3 player belt that promised to help you literally rock your baby to sleep, and apparently it was such a breakout success that it inspired the creation of a second, the the Nuvo Ritmo.

It too is a speaker belt that connects to your MP3 player. This one, however, splits in the middle, surrounding your baby with sound -- surely tinny sound given the tiny speakers and seeming lack of an amplifier. The strap Velcros onto the mother's back and promises to deliver a "sound like love" and, indeed, the demonstration video below presents a lovely, mellow world of gentle tunes -- but we're not entirely sure that's accurate. Don't listen to us, though. We're all stuck in the cold, harsh reality. Right now, everyone may be focused on J. J. Abrams' reboot of the 'Star Trek' franchise, the Hollywood blockbuster that's received mixed reviews from Trekkers but certainly found success at the box office. Of course, there's over forty years of television and cinematic history that all came before, and this remote control model by a Japanese builder who goes by the name of Starfleet Yokosuka does an amazing job of bringing that to life -- underwater.

Yes, the U.S.S. Enterprise traveled to the far reaches of space, but this model makes its way under the water. It's a submarine in a space ship shell and it works surprisingly well (see the clip after the jump). The fluid motions in a swimming pool plus the lighting effects give an effect that closely matches what you'd see on TV or in the movies -- if you ignore the bubbles, of course. This model is from the 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' version of the NCC-1701-A Enterprise, before Abrams gave it the "hot rod" treatment, and the lighting and attention to detail is immaculate. If only every 'Star Trek' modeler took this much pride in their work. We can all recite Frosty's major components by heart, from his magical top hat down to his snowy base, but the creation of this snowman required some ingredients that Gene Autry would have never even imagined. The little guy above is apparently the smallest snowman in the world, about one-fifth the width of a human hair, and is the product of some pretty amazing techniques.

Its craftsman is David Cox of the National Physical Laboratory in the U.K. At the lab, Cox took two tiny beads of tin and welded them together using platinum deposits in a process called nanomanipulation. The nose, too, is made of that same stuff, while the eyes were carved using just a beam of ions, all manually controlled by Cox via an electron microscope. Watch the video below for a good idea of just how small this sucker is, and rest assured that even if he does come to life to wreak havoc, you won't have much to worry about. So long as nobody slips in your egg nog, anyway. Chances are you've given up traditional e-mail clients in favor of something like Gmail or Hotmail by now, but did you ever think about what happens when those services go away? Sure, Google's great, but there's no guarantee that it's going to keep Gmail (and all your messages) online forever. If it up and disappears one day, you're done for -- unless you use Backupify (or other backup services).

Backupify is a site that lets you back up your entire online life, whether it be from Gmail, Flickr, Twitter, or even Google Docs. You sign up for its service and then link in all your accounts and, like magic, it sucks everything in and creates a copy. So, if Tumblr takes a tumble into the abyss of failed startups, or suddenly Zoho is no more, your data is safe. Well, probably safe.
Continue reading Backupify Backs Up your Online Data...

Haven't seen James Cameron's $300 million epic film 'Avatar' yet? Many would argue that if you haven't seen it in 3-D -- particularly IMAX 3-D -- you haven't seen it at all. The film, after all, was shot with the third dimension in mind. Cameron used a series of cameras designed to capture multiple perspectives simultaneously, giving you, the viewer, an unparalleled sense of depth -- if you don't mind wearing goofy glasses, that is. Wearing those goofy glasses gives some folks a headache, but Shadow Locked has the simple solution: obedience.

The problem that faces many folks when watching a 3-D film rears its head when one portion of the image is in focus and the other is intentionally blurred. The 3-D effect can trick your eyes into thinking they're looking at something with actual depth, when in reality you're simply looking at two flat images. So, when you look at something that's blurry onscreen, your eyes try to bring it into focus -- and fail because it was filmed that way. The trick is to simply be obedient and look at the focused areas. It's something of a bummer (There's usually lots of good stuff going on in the blurry areas.), but if it means avoiding a splitting headache and making it through all two and a half hours of those glorious visual effects, it's worth it. The humble cell phone goes by many names; worldwide, the most common being simply "mobile." For many on this side of the pond, though, that word first brings to mind the image of a rotating object hanging from the ceiling of a nursery. Thus, the Mobile Mobile was born.

The art installation is composed of 50 HTC Touch handsets, all run by custom code directed by connected computers. Apparently, it can be programmed to play any song, like the holiday-themed one in the video after the break, and remote musicians can access a live stream at the installation's site and play their own music. Any tune you can think of.
Continue reading A Musical Mobile of Mobiles Makes Cell Phone Holiday Magic

Filed under: Cell Phones, Holiday Gift Guide

A Musical Mobile of Mobiles Makes Cell Phone Holiday Magic originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 10:15:00 EST.
You may still not have acquired a taste for Celery, but chances are your grandparents have, or they will have if they have a fax machine. Confused? Celery is a way to allow those without computer smarts to e-mail and Twitter via paper, as 80-year-old Dorothy Miller demonstrates to WTEN News 10.

Celery has been around for a while, but Twitter integration is new. To use it, the person simply writes their tweet onto a sheet of paper and feeds it into a fax machine. It's received by the Celery system, which does a little character recognition and posts it online. Tweets by those that the Celery user follows are aggregated together and, once a day, faxed back to them to read -- after finishing the New York Times crossword or their evening programs, of course. Also, as Dorothy explains, it keeps needless conversation conveniently brief.
Continue reading Celery Makes Twitter Nice and Digestible, Especially For Grandma

Celery Makes Twitter Nice and Digestible, Especially For Grandma originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 14:20:00 EST.

With more and more applications moving to the Internet, it's getting easier and easier for one shady developer to rip off the work of another. Often, you can easily see the source code (the behind-the scenes plumbing that makes it all happen) of a given site and then copy it for your own with just a few clicks. Change a few images and, presto, you've got your own app. That's apparently what MSN China has been found guilty of: ripping off a Chinese blogging site called Plurk.

Microsoft has admitted that its China wing stole code when creating MSN Juku, a microblogging site that looks nearly indistinguishable from Plurk (check out a larger image after the break). Complaints were raised and Microsoft itself wasted no time in confirming the theft -- while naturally issuing plenty of apologies and regrets. The MSN Juku site has now been suspended and the company is working to make things right. Fortunately for Microsoft, a little money heals most wounds.

We all know that geeks come in all shapes and sizes, but did you ever try to figure out what unifies them? What key concepts bring one to another? Is it a love for arcane knowledge? An obsessiveness with detail? Or, are they all just unified by a love of seeing Princess Leia in her metal bikini? As it turns out, it's not quite so simple, as the above chart from Ibrahim Evsan shows.

Evsan is a blogger and the author of a German book called 'The Fixation of Code' which, among other things, examines people's obsession with computers and technical things. This map (click the image above to view the larger version) he's created applies a sort of 'Schoolhouse Rock!' aesthetic to the idea, showing that while a film geek may have different obsessions than a comic book geek, chances are they both really dig Batman. It's all in there, even Rickrolling, meaning the only question left is: where do you fit in?

For the past few years, social network mega-sites Facebook and MySpace have been getting a little safer thanks to each making efforts to block sex offenders. Now, much of the rest of the Internet is getting the similar treatment, with New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announcing that 13 more sites are finally following suit, hooking into the state's database of sex offenders and filtering them out. In a statement, Cuomo said, "It is no secret that sexual predators abuse social networking websites to find and manipulate victims and to insinuate themselves into their victims' lives."

Facebook and MySpace are the biggest of the social networks online, but sex offenders have been officially banned from New York since August. This move by sites like Google's Orkut.com and Aol's Beebo.com to block offenders will make it much harder for them to register, at least in the state of New York, where they must not only register their home address but also any e-mail, instant messenger handles, and other online personas they may be using. Other states have yet to follow suit in opening up sex offender databases, but it's hard to see any politician not getting behind this sort of measure.
It's debatable whether the CAN-SPAM act of 2003 really has had any impact on the volume of unwanted e-mails received -- our inboxes are as cluttered as ever. So, forgive us if we weren't exactly hopeful when the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) effectively made robocalls, automated messages from political parties and other unwanteds, illegal a few months ago. But, there is hope, with the FTC filing suits against three offenders earlier this week.

Those firms are Economic Relief Technologies LLC, Dynamic Financial Group Inc., and JPM Accelerated Services. As of September, the FTC made it illegal for automated calls to be made to recipients who did not opt-in to such calls, in writing no less. These three were caught ringing up people at random and attempting to sell interest rate reduction programs and other verbal spam. They now face fines and other penalties, but we'll have to wait to see just how harsh it will get.

In other news, 191 million numbers are now listed on the Do Not Call registry. Are you one of them? If not, you're just a click away. We've seen the Barnes & Noble Nook in the news quite a bit lately -- and not necessarily for the right reasons, either, after its pre-holiday release was postponed to a decidedly post-holiday January 11th. A few lucky pre-orderers will get their Nooks today, but very few have had enough time with the gadgets to write reviews. The results? Positive, but not exactly a perfect machine.

While Engadget praises the inclusion of free texts from Google Books and the overall polish of the buying experience, our sister site also ran into a number of issues with applications crashing, and found performance generally lackluster. Technologizer encountered similar issues, finding the hardware good but the software not quite ready for prime-time. That sentiment was echoed by Gizmodo, which noted that, beyond the software issues, the reading experience is exactly like that of the Kindle -- not surprising, since the gadgets have the same screen.
Continue reading Barnes & Noble Nook E-Reader Reviewed, Yawns Abound

Barnes & Noble Nook E-Reader Reviewed, Yawns Abound originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 10:00:00 EST.

When it comes to booking your next holiday retreat, there are a number of places in the world you'd probably be unlikely to visit if you value your safety -- places like Iraq, Somalia, or Detroit. Digital locations are apparently no different. Anti-virus and computer security company McAfee has a map for you, and red most certainly means don't go.

The company has done a search of worldwide domains -- Internet addresses -- and categorized the unhealthy ones based on country. These are the websites that look real but are fake, trying to get user names, passwords, and other account information so that malicious folks can steal your precious infos. The worst of the worst? Cameroon. The country's domain identifier is .CM, which looks awfully close to .COM, meaning it's a place people often get to by accident. Meanwhile, Romania's .RO has the most viruses and malicious downloads, while good 'ol governmental domains, ending in .GOV, tend to be safest. At least politicians can do one thing right. Nook Reader Pushed Back to January 11

It's the most commercial time of the year, and Barnes and Noble is sadly going to miss out on the best of it. Its oft-delayed Nook reader has just been pushed back again, now not expected to ship until January 11.
Michael Arrington's CrunchPad Gets Canceled

It turns out those early rumors of the CrunchPad's demise have come true. The device's chief evangelist has confirmed that the gadget will never come to market -- at least not as the CrunchPad.
Continue reading Holiday Letdowns: Nook Reader Delayed, CrunchPad Canceled

Holiday Letdowns: Nook Reader Delayed, CrunchPad Canceled originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 10:12:00 EST.
Google Brings Navigation to Android 1.6
Just a few weeks after the impulsive members of the Android community ran to their closest Verizon Store to get a Motorola Droid and its navigation capabilities, leaving behind them a wake of discarded myTouches and reason, Google has given Android's first early adopters something to smile about: Google Navigation for older Android 1.6 handsets.

Apple Hits Back at Verizon
Verizon seems to have shaken a hornet's nest with its iPhone attack ads, and has been met with legal and advertising retaliation from AT&T. Now, Apple's getting into the game, too, with its own anti-Verizon ads.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Older Androids Get Google Nav, Apple Strikes Back

The Daily Engadget: Older Androids Get Google Nav, Apple Strikes Back originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 09:25:00 EST.
Second Worm Hits Jailbroken iPhones
Not too long ago, a million iPhone users gasped when they learned that some of their handsets were vulnerable to a virus. Unfortunately, that first worm was a pussycat compared to this one. Thankfully, this newest evildoer only affects hacked phones.

Windows 8 Coming in 2012
If you believe your conspiracy theorist uncle, 2012 is the year the world will end. It's also apparently the year that the next major installment of Windows will ship. Coincidence?
California Mandates Energy Efficiency Improvements by 2011
Those heat waves rising from the back of your HDTV are a sure sign of energy waste, and are not long for California if the state government has its way. The Golden State is tackling HDTV inefficiency with new regulations scheduled to go into effect in just over a year.
Engadget Gets a Redesign
Tired of the old standard Engadget design? It's gone, and it's been replaced by something a little fresher and something we think you'll like a little more.

Palm Pixi Drops to $25
Palm's lightweight version of the Pre just got a lot cheaper, dropping to a mere $25. It's a very attractive offering, and costs what it should have in the first place.
Verizon vs. AT&T Battle Continues
Hoo boy, AT&T is suing the tar out of Verizon for false advertising, but Verizon isn't taking it sitting down. In response to charges that it had falsely characterized AT&T in commercials, Verizon's legal staff came back with fighting words, saying: "The truth hurts."
Sony Reader Conquers Canadian Academy
In Canada, it seems folks are getting tired of lugging around big, heavy textbooks, with one high school switching entirely to Sony Readers. We can only assume that our neighbors in the Frozen North decided to implement the switch because: one, winter's coming; two, energy prices continue to rise; and three, old books make warm fires.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Verizon Tussles With AT&T, School Ditches Books for E-Readers

The Daily Engadget: Verizon Tussles With AT&T, School Ditches Books for E-Readers originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 10:15:00 EST. Of all the wondrous things about Motorola's Droid, there's been one major flaw: the camera's lousy focus. Now, all of a sudden, it can mysteriously find its targets perfectly.
Apple Wins Comprehensively Against Psystar
The battle between tech behemoth Apple and Mac clone maker Psystar seems to have come to a very abrupt and crashing halt. Over the weekend, a California court ruled that the Hackintosh maker had to cease operations immediately.

Black Friday Deals Roundup
We're still over a week away from the biggest shopping day of the year, but all the major deals have been revealed -- and are a little, well, underwhelming. See for yourself.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Apple Beats Poseur Psystar, Black Friday Deals

The Daily Engadget: Apple Beats Poseur Psystar, Black Friday Deals originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 09:15:00 EST. Twitter and Facebook Integration Hits Xbox Live Next Week
It was announced over the summer and has been teased plenty since, but Microsoft is finally releasing the next big update to the Xbox 360 next week, adding in social network integration and also some 1080p streaming video.

Google Chrome OS Launching Next Week?

Google's Chrome OS has been rumored and supposedly photographed, and now out of the blue it's set to launch in just a week.
Nokia Recalling 14 Million Defective Chargers
It was just a few weeks ago that Sony wowed us with a recall of 69,000 chargers. Not to be outdone, Nokia has now gone several orders of magnitude better, recalling 14 million chargers due to potential electric shock.

First Worm Hits iPhone
Don't let the above words frighten you; if you're rolling with a standard iPhone, and haven't tried to do any hacking on it, you're in the clear. But, if you've jailbroken your beloved gadget, you'd better watch out for this Rick Astley-themed virus.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Nokia Recalls 14M Chargers, First iPhone Worm

The Daily Engadget: Nokia Recalls 14M Chargers, First iPhone Worm originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 09:30:00 EST.
Windows 7 Early Sales Figures 234-Percent Higher Than Vista's
Although Windows Vista got reasonably positive reviews when it was released, that last generation of Microsoft OS absolutely failed to capture the hearts and minds of consumers. That's not the case with the days-old Windows 7, which is selling more than twice as quickly as its predecessor did.

Verizon Starts Shilling DROID and DROID Eris
These days, smartphones are popping up in the marketplace with the frequency of zits on a blogger's forehead. Motorola's coveted DROID, and its stripped-down DROID Eris model, are now both on sale with two-year contracts at Verizon's Web site -- the former for $200 (after a $100 online mark-down) and the latter at $100.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Windows 7 Far Outselling Vista, DROID Launches

The Daily Engadget: Windows 7 Far Outselling Vista, DROID Launches originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 10:15:00 EST.
Apple's App Store Tops 100,000 Apps, Two Billion Downloads
We're sure that, from the beginning, Apple expected its App Store to be a success. But 100,000 apps and two billion downloads? That's more than a success; it's a phenomenon.

Walmart's $300 Laptop Is No Netbook
The $300 netbook has revolutionized portable computing for the masses, and there's now a fleet of tiny, light devices most folks can afford. Walmart is doing something a bit more impressive, though, by releasing a full-featured laptop at the same price-point.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Apple Store Breaks 100K Apps, Walmart's $300 Laptop

The Daily Engadget: Apple Store Breaks 100K Apps, Walmart's $300 Laptop originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 10:18:00 EST.
AT&T Sues Verizon Over 'There's a Map for That' Ads
Verizon has "the network" and loves to flaunt that in its ads, but AT&T isn't so happy when it's on the receiving end of a little heckling, though, suing to take those spots off the air.

Beatles Catalog Released on Apple-Shaped USB Sticks
Sure, you could buy the CD re-release of the entire Beatles catalog, but why do that when the whole thing arrives on one charmingly apple-shaped USB stick?
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: AT&T Sues Verizon Over Ads, Beatles Go Digital

The Daily Engadget: AT&T Sues Verizon Over Ads, Beatles Go Digital originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 10:15:00 EST.
Hands-On with Sony Ericsson's First Android Device, the XPERIA X10

With the DROID launching this Friday it's going to be hard for any other Android device to capture an audience, but the lovely design of Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X10 might just be the ticket.

Motorola's CLIQ Launches

Yes, the flood of Android phones to the market continues. Apple Releases Apple TV 3.0 Software Update
It's been a long wait for those of you with an Apple TV, but the 3.0 release is finally out there. That means iTunes Extra support, Genius Mixes, and a fancy new menu system.

Loud Commercials Could Be Over
The boosted volume of commercials has been the bane of television viewing since even before the days of the remote control. Finally, the Advanced Television Systems Committee has agreed to get rid of the practice.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Apple TV 3.0 Released, Loud Ads Finally Over?

The Daily Engadget: Apple TV 3.0 Released, Loud Ads Finally Over? originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 10:10:00 EST. Google Debuts a Mobile Navigation App for Android 2.0
Google's Android mobile operating system just keeps getting better and better. Our friends over at Engadget obsessively cover everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics, which is why we compile this daily roundup of their top stuff (or, at least, what we think is tops).
Google's Voice Takes Over Your Cell Phone's Voicemail
The Google Voice service essentially offers you a new phone number that serves to aggregate all of your other phones. But what if you like the digits you already have? Now, the service can roll all those phones into that preexisting number, absorbing all your cell phones' voicemails in the process.

Palm Pixi on Sale November 15
If you like the Pre, but want something a little thinner, a little slimmer, and a little cheaper, meet the Pixi. It hits Sprint on November 15th for $99.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Google Conquers Voicemail, Palm Pixi Lands Nov. 15

The Daily Engadget: Google Conquers Voicemail, Palm Pixi Lands Nov. 15 originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 10:22:00 EST.
