RIM kicked off its BlackBerry World event in Orlando, Florida by launching the not-so-secret BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 models, also dubbed "Bold Touch."

While the devices don't noticeably stray from RIM's design choices from the past decade -- they're instantly recognizable as QWERTY keyboard BlackBerrys -- the 9900 and 9300 pack some impressive guts. While the 2.8-inch VGA touchscreens won't impress many in today's world of 4-inch screens, but the devices are RIM's thinnest yet at 10.5mm.

Continue reading BlackBerry Bold 9900, 9930 Will Run BlackBerry OS 7

BlackBerry Bold 9900, 9930 Will Run BlackBerry OS 7 originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 20 May 2011 11:09:00 EST.

This morning, RIM finally unveiled its next generation mobile operating system, BlackBerry OS 7. It's not a giant leap forward, but RIM is detailing a faster and easier-to-use OS that comes with an integrated, voice-enabled Universal Search system.

BlackBerry fans that have been frustrated by the operating system's chronically sluggish Web experience will be pleased to know that OS 7 offers a "significantly enhanced" browser with HTML5 video support and speed updates.

Interestingly, OS 7 won't have any legacy support, meaning that even the current generation Bold or Touch that you bought last year will be left behind -- you'll need to have one of RIM's brand new 9900 or 9930 devices to run it. SlashGear writes that according to RIM, "the reasoning behind the absent upgrades is that the new OS is so dependent on the hardware graphics capabilities of its new handsets."

RIM's new BlackBerry Balance application, though, will work on any device running OS 6.0 or later. First detailed in January, Balance is RIM's solution for combining both your personal and corporate accounts -- and all the security requirements that those require -- on a single device. For example, you can wipe all of the enterprise data from your phone, while still leaving the personal accounts intact. Or, social networking apps like Facebook and Twitter can be given limited access to anything from your corporate accounts.

BlackBerry OS 7 Features Announced--But It Won't Run On Older Devices originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 02 May 2011 10:47:00 EST. Well, here we are. More than four years after launching, Switched and DownloadSquad are unfortunately being closed. I've been thrilled to work at these two sites that have expanded tech coverage beyond the usual gadgets and social networks to cooking, culture, design, art and more. It's been humbling to work with these incredibly dedicated and talented teams of writers, and it would have been impossible to do it without them.

Going forward, you'll still be able to get the best tech news coverage from Engadget, HuffingtonPost Tech, Joystiq and TUAW. While we're still working out some of the details, Switched and DownloadSquad will continue to live on the Web and be fully accessible via search. Understandably, our Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr presences will quiet down, but you can still follow the Switched and DownloadSquad writers on their personal accounts. Thanks for reading.
Farewell, Internet originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 12 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. Of course, most everyone, when challenged at a conscious level, will correct this mistake, and agree that no, Google only aggregates, it doesn't think, that the Internet is just a compilation of human endeavors. But how often do you hear someone say something like "ask Google", "Wikipedia says", "Facebook told me..."? Before the Internet, there was no tool with which people interacted linguistically.

Yesterday the Internet lit up for a bit with news of a new track from the draggy, divisive outfit Salem. "Nite Daze," according to the email blasting it around the Internet, was "all about the drag environment of being incredibly tired, in a dream-state, wasted or on something, and forcing something creative from the mutual confused experience," and it sure sounded like at least one of those words.

Etsy itself grew out of a freelance design project that Kalin and two friends, Haim Schoppik and Chris Maguire, undertook for GetCrafty.com, an online bulletin board for crafters run by the wife of an NYU professor. While working on GetCrafty, Kalin noticed two things: first, that there were a lot of crafters on the Internet, and, second, that many of them hated eBay.

Adding yet another thing to click as you make your way across the Web, Google has finally launched its long-rumored '+1' recommendation service. (Try it out here.) It seems that Google is augmenting its algorithmically derived search results with your contacts' recommendations. Google's Matt Cutts told AdAge, "When someone recommends something, that's a pretty good indicator of quality." The assumption is that your friends' +1's would help you find, say, the best coffee shops in Austin or top-notch mushroom risotto recipes. While tweets and Facebook "likes" let users respond to your sharing, +1's are simply public votes for any given link you find through Google search.

Launching experimentally today, +1 can only be used on Google's search results pages, but will eventually be accessible from other links. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr have proven to be helpful alternatives to search for finding and sharing interesting content, and Google's hybrid approach, with a potential user base of millions, could help improve the quality of search results.
Continue reading Google's New +1 Social Search Button Puts 'Likes' in Your Search

Google's New +1 Social Search Button Puts 'Likes' in Your Search originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 15:00:00 EST. We met up with Vimeo's Andrew Pile down at SXSW to get an early look at the company's long-awaited iPhone app, which hit the App Store this morning. The new app gives you access to your videos, likes and 'Watch Later' list, all constituting a much-needed alternative to Vimeo's current mobile optimized site. The free app's built-in video editor offers an alternative to Apple's $4.99 iMovie with transitions, titling tools, simple audio editing and basic effects. You can choose from existing video on your phone or record in-app; after editing, upload the video to Vimeo, or export it as a self-contained movie. The bare-bones video editor is surprisingly good for quickly throwing together a few clips, music and titles without having to transfer your files back to your computer, and worked fine on our aging 3GS (though it did crash several times when we tried to export). At launch, the app doesn't support AirPlay for sending videos to your TV, but Pile confirmed that we can expect it in future versions of the app.
The Lala founder's app arrived today at Color.com (the domain having been purchased for a cool $350,000) with commentators claiming that it will "transform the way people communicate with each other." Nguyen has been given huge media exposure by everyone from the New York Times and Fast Company to industry veterans like John Battelle. Photo apps built around sharing (e.g. 'Instagram' and 'Path') have proven extremely popular in the past year, and Color adds another element to the endlessly hyped mobile and social mix: location.
Continue reading 'Color' App Takes Your Photos Public, Shows Users in 150-Foot Radius

'Color' App Takes Your Photos Public, Shows Users in 150-Foot Radius originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 13:00:00 EST. Yesterday, we sat in on the excellent 'Made it So (Interface Makers in Movies)' panel at SXSW with Chris Noessel, Mike Fink, Mark Coleran and David Lewandowski, some of the designers behind the on-screen interfaces in movies ranging from '80s classics 'Blade Runner' and 'WarGames' to modern day blockbusters 'Avatar' and 'Tron: Legacy.' The panel followed a simple question and answer format, touching on favorite movie interfaces, the elements that shape on-screen graphics and the connections between real-world gadgets and UIs and sci-fi movies.
Continue reading Sci-Fi Movie Interfaces: Why Transparent Screens Are Miserable to Use

Sci-Fi Movie Interfaces: Why Transparent Screens Are Miserable to Use originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 15:15:00 EST. Well, it's hard to make female characters. First of all, in order to accommodate female characters in our pipeline, you'd basically need to re-code the entire engine from the ground up. Because the technology we have today just wasn't built to be able to handle stuff like that. I'm thinking about it now and I have no idea how you'd even start making those kind of changes in our low-level architecture.

Tumblr and Twitter may be the hot sharing sites in 2011, but millions of bloggers got their start on Google's free Blogger, a site that hasn't had major visual refresh since 2004. Google previewed Blogger's redesign at SXSW, and it looks like the classic blues and oranges are out in favor of whiter and wider writing tools. No word on launch date, but Google says it's coming in 2011.
Continue reading Google Previews Updated Blogger Interface at SXSW

Google Previews Updated Blogger Interface at SXSW originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 12:47:00 EST.

Christopher 'Moot' Poole, founder of 4chan and Canv.as, spoke at SXSW's Sunday keynote, and explored privacy, creativity and the importance of anonymity online. With persistent identities (often tied to our real names) from sites like Facebook, Twitter and Disqus tracking our actions across the Internet, Poole compared the loss of anonymity online to a loss of youth -- a time for experimentation. He noted, "The cost of failure is really high when you're contributing as yourself," an increasingly common situation as Facebook and commenting accounts tied to your identity spread. HR departments, college admissions and countless other professional organizations dig into your online activities and profiles, and most people are still coming to terms with just what it means to live online. Just take the example of journalist Nils Rosen and the fallout from his insensitive tweets about Lara Logan's sexual assault in Egypt. An offhand comment with few repercussions in the pre-digital era can now become a career-altering disaster in the Twitter age.

But Poole contends that the loss of anonymity isn't just about increasingly living in public and archived for eternity. He found that 4chan's anonymity and lack of archiving actually fuel creativity and experimentation; it's been a consistent force in creating new memes exactly because the system makes it so simple to ignore the failures. Where Zuckerberg contends real identity is the best path to authenticity, Poole argues "anonymity is authenticity."
Continue reading 4Chan's 'Moot': Zuckerberg's Single Identity Is 'Totally Wrong'

4Chan's 'Moot': Zuckerberg's Single Identity Is 'Totally Wrong' originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 18:49:00 EST. And modern filters don't just organize that information for us; they push the information at us as alerts, updates, streams. We tend to point to spam as an example of information overload. With SXSW less than a week away, everyone's racing to push out new apps and updates -- and inexplicably road tripping on a StartupBus -- to beat the rush in Austin. Today's unavoidable app is Zite, a personalized magazine that's being touted as a 'Flipboard-killer' because of its learning capabilities. Unlike iPad publications like The Daily or Sir Richard Branson's 'Project,' Zite mixes the links from your friends' Twitter accounts and your Google Reader subscriptions with the voting and customization ideas from services like Pandora.

Apps like Reeder, Flipboard and Pulse require that you bring in your own subscriptions in the form of Tweets, RSS feeds or Facebook friends. Zite claims that its recommendation system, developed by the University of British Columbia's Laboratory for Computational Intelligence, is even smarter. Zite starts with your basic preferences and then customizes to your interests (long-form journalism, celebrity news, cats) by analyzing how you read and rate articles. Let's dig in to see how it fares.
The North Korean government has always been of two minds when it comes to technology. Despite its guiding philosophy of "self-reliance" (juche), it has relied on neighbors to enable it to enter the information age. Its official YouTube videos, Twitter feed, and Facebook accounts are registered in China. Until the late 1990s, all international phone calls were routed through Beijing or Moscow.

At an individual level, I think the "distracted Americans" scare will pass. Either people who manage to unplug, focus, and fully direct their attention will have an advantage over those constantly checking Facebook and their smart phone, in which case they'll earn more money, get into better colleges, start more successful companies, and win more Nobel Prizes. Or they won't, in which case distraction will be a trait of modern life but not necessarily a defect.

I believe in the power of information-the world is a better place when more information is available to more and more people; it's crucial to a functioning democracy. For me, there's no better place to get accurate, fresh information-well-reported information-than a newspaper.

Physicists, too, started to sense that the matter of the universe may be nothing more than the physical manifestation of information, that the most fundamental particles may be carriers and transmitters of messages. The bit, Gleick reports, could well turn out to be the basic unit of existence. The entire universe may be nothing more than "a cosmic information-processing machine."

A black, nine-inch tattoo, in the shape of a thick S, runs down Jack Dorsey's left forearm. But one can ignore the outlaw implications: this is a man whose first act each day is to text his mother. Dorsey intends the tattoo as a reference to his interests in math, music, and anatomy. First, it represents an integral. "It symbolizes integrating everything," explains Dorsey, somewhat cryptically.

It is strange that the web, which in every way attempts to cater to the fantasies of its audience (we're drooling at your photos of dinner at Momofuku, watching six-hour marathons of television shows that we would never admit to our TiVos that we enjoy, airbrushing our profile pictures), would ask us to be so honest about which coffee shops we frequent enough to earn a mayor badge or how we look on any given Wednesday.

It's not that the web is making us less intelligent; if anything, the evidence suggests it sharpens more cognitive skills than it dulls. It's not that the web is making us less happy, although there are certainly those who, like Carr, feel enslaved by its rhythms and cheated by the quality of its pleasures. It's that the web may be an enemy of creativity. Which is why Woody Allen might be wise in avoiding it altogether.
