Love for Our Tweeps: People Answer 'What Is Twitter?'

Last week, we took our cameras to the streets and inadvertently stumped roughly half the people when we asked, "What is Flickr?" This time, we decided to try our luck by inquiring about Twitter, and, for the most part, everyone had an inkling as to the micro-blogging powerhouse's raison d'être.

Since people are now apparently tweeting 27 million times a day, this should come as no surprise. Not only do we chronicle our outrage over a contentious election via tweets, the Twiteratti have even taken to academic discourse. A zeitgeist has been ignited by 140-character streams of culture.

So what answer most aptly captured the Twitter Experience? "Like, if someone's going to the bathroom, you can know that...I guess that's when they tweet." Precisely.

Big week for Pixar fans as the latest animated feature, 'Up,' is released, along with the Pixar classic 'Monster, Inc.' Warner continues to release catalogs, but with the size of its catalog, it could probably release four a week every week and still never finish. For the most part this is a good week for Blu-ray but we know you are with us when we say that next week is what we're really waiting for as 'Star Trek' was probably the best movie to hit the theaters this year, and it hits Blu-ray next Tuesday.

'What Is Flickr?' Question Flummoxes Folks on the Street

We'll admit that, as tech journalists, we live in a bit of a self-imposed bubble when it comes to Internet goings-on. ("What do you mean, 'You've never heard of a meme?' ") So we decided to take our cameras to the streets of New York and descend upon the less compulsively-geeky masses to ask, "What is Flickr?"

Though the image-sharing behemoth Flickr -- now millions of users strong -- celebrated its 4 billionth photo upload last month, we apparently confused a fair-sized cross-section of people walking through Times Square. But all was not lost: despite the fact that some couldn't tell us "what the Flickr is," we mercifully found some of our own ilk, from teens to more mature passerbys, to legitimize our inherently techy career focus. (Mom, Dad, we're doing powerful important work, here.)

Comedian Frank Caliendo Does 'Street Fighter' Impressions

You may know him primarily for his work as John Madden, Andy Rooney, or one of a hundred other well-known celebrities, but master impressionist and comedian Frank Caliendo recently shed those facades for a rare moment of (somewhat) serious gadget and video games talk. The man of infinite voices told us (in more than one voice, including those of 'Street Fighter' characters) that he juggles his gadgets and games as easily as he does his multiple personalities. In an ironic iTunes twist, he tells us that even he is not immune to being duped by impostors -- well, imposter downloads, at least. Caliendo will be performing his live show in Las Vegas through December 1, but if you happen to see the act and run into him afterward, you might want to think twice before asking him to leave you a funny outgoing voicemail message. We had to learn the hard way.

Oh man do we just love this time of year, not only are the super hot days of summer over, but Football is here and now the big blockbuster movies are hitting Blu-ray. And of the big movies for 2009, none is bigger than 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,' which hits Blu-ray tomorrow -- actually if you really can't wait, you can go to Best Buy at midnight tonight and pick it up. We can't say we blame 'em, but the rest of the studios pretty much let Paramount make this 'Transformers' week as there really isn't anything else out there to get excited about. That's ok though, because in the next 12 weeks there should be plenty to choose from.

Blu-ray Releases This Week

Here we are one more week until 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' and 'Waterworld' are released on Blu-ray and as you might expect in October, nothing much to see here -- just kidding about 'Waterworld,' that movie stinks. If you are into scary movies then 'Drag Me to Hell' should be a welcomed addition, you know with its IDMB score of 7.5 and all. Disney does have 'The Proposal,' but we'd bet you feel the same way as we do about it; we'll pass.

Blu-ray Releases This Week

The first week of October is here and along with the first cold fronts of the season come one of the first big titles leading up to the holiday season. As if we actually had to tell you -- Disney is breaking a classic out of its "vault" this week with 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' We don't know about anyone else, but we love to see classics in HD for the first time and although animated features aren't our first choice, any time there is more HD content for our kids to watch over and over again, we're pleased. Other than that nothing really stands out to us, but the sheer number of titles released this week is impressive. So of course we have little doubt that someone will blast us in the comments for not mentioning their favorite release this week.
