Even the charmed lives of beauty queens can be dragged through the mud by Facebook photos taken far away from the pageant stage. Miss New Jersey Amy Polumbo discovered this firsthand over the summer when she was the target of a strange "blackmail plot" centered on profile images of her partying and carrying on in a less than royal fashion. She ended up releasing the photos herself, and soon everyone was wondering what the fuss was all about -- from venture capitalists to gossip reporters, Facebook has a tendency to get people riled up.

By pitting two Web site screenshots against one another, the site allows you to channel your inner (or outer) design snob and choose a winner. And then you can do it again. And again. Facebook is going to rewrite the book on standard office excuses, at least for its shortsighted users. Kevin Colvin, an intern at Anglo Irish bank, thought that had an ironclad story when he asked off to attend to a "family emergency." When his boss was alerted to this fresh picture posted to his Facebook profile during his absence, that story lost just a tad of its believability -- unless he was curing Aunt Hattie with his magical powers and a potent hoppy elixir. We're sure that posting the picture seemed like a good idea at the time, Kevin, but you were sadly mistaken. Same goes for that costume.

This story -- women who show little discretion in their alcohol consumption and even less when documenting their misadventures on their profiles -- seems to have started the most recent wave of Facebook embarrassments. While it's difficult for many to understand the personal pride and motivation behind such excess, it's even more mind-boggling to know that these exploits are being glorified online for all to see. Mom must be proud, and potential employers are surely beating down the doors.

Students at Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey were shocked and confused when the news trucks rolled up to get the scoop on a set of Facebook photos. Obtained by a nosy parent, the pictures featured underage drinking that led to the suspension of school athletes. Many saw the role of the photos in the punishments as legally questionable, but despite organized protests and other umbrage, many students opted to just take their own racy Facebook pictures down as soon as possible. Live and learn, everyone -- just don't post visual evidence of it happening on your profile.

The impact of Halo 3's September 25th launch has been reverberating for a month strong now, and besides record sales and sore thumbs, the game has also produced countless forum posts, blog entries, and other content from the online faithful. Our personal favorite is the Halo-3-inspired video, and there are plenty of robust genres available - we love a good pwnage (definition) or grenade toss clip, but we're especially partial to those that make Master Chief (the game's main character) dance. In case you haven't guessed, 'spurned girl' and 'addicted guy' characters factor heavily in our video category of choice. YouTube user molliejane claims to have composed these wrenching lyrics and set them to Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" all in good fun, but there's no denying the musical angst here (not to mention the capable Ken Burns imitation). You certainly traffic in many forms of pain, Master Chief.

Their album may have just come out this week, but the Backstreet Boys buzz surely had an influence on the comedy group Team Tiger Awesome, which put together this choreography-flaunting, multi-part-harmony-belting, and altogether poptastic song and video for "Halo Nights." The song and video was unleashed in September to coincide with the game's release. We give them extra credit for the sustained storyline and sweet special effects.

Google's logo has become especially known for its Google Doodles, and this year's full-on ghoulish painting logo continue that fine, quirky tradition.



The search giant has even dressed up its significant new addition to the family in some festive holiday threads (though if our TV became a pumpkin we'd be a little upset). BooTube, anyone?



Our last spooky Google shoutout comes via our friends at Geeksugar - we've been flying a witch through Google Street View all day! Head over and give it a try - a little rehearsal of the trick or treating route through your neighborhood for the evening can't hurt!



Google's not the only one having fun with logo ornamentation, though. In fact, our research indicates that Halloween logo competition may be just as fierce as competition for your search queries. Yahoo, for one, has made their logo the center of an entire bone-rattling animation. We only have a still to show you here, so check out its homepage for the show!



However, we think that Ask has won our haunted hearts by placing its entire homepage in a Jack-O-Lantern lit night. Can you think of a better setting for your last minute costume questions?

Here at Switched, we write a lot about these next-gen, "Web 2.0" companies and technologies, which include everyone from MySpace and Facebook to Twitter and even Google.

Given that we're partial to t-shirts with nerdy, tech-infused jokes and terminology, we figured it was high time to find the best geek t-shirts specifically related to Web 2.0 speak (like the "Your Podcast is Lame" t-shirt, flickr user ericskiff, pictured above). Fact is, tagging links, images, and other pieces of information online are the hot way to organize things in Web 2.0, and this shirt means its wearer is in the know. While the lolcat phenomenon started on Internet message boards, sites such as I Can Has Cheezburger? brought goofy cat pictures and idiosyncratic captions to the Web masses. It might not fit the strictest definition of Web 2.0, but ICHS is a vast social network with some very cool features (it also mints ad money, which always helps in Web 2.0 circles). Twitter traffics in brief update messages that its users can send from any Internet-connected device, making it ripe for compulsive friend-monitoring as well as double-entendre hunters. "Come Twitter on my sensitive iPhone touchscreen?" The possibilities are endless.

Success has a strange currency on the social news site Digg, where links rated positively by users (given a 'digg,' in other words) can drive Web sites, blog posts, and all kinds of stories to new heights of popularity. For all of its entrepreneurial, spare-garage innovation, Web 2.0 has bred some sprawling companies. Google's certainly risen to the top, but a $600 share price has incited a fair amount of jealousy and worry from outsiders as the company continues to buy startups and expand its information empire. Only time will tell what the men of the "Don't Be Evil" mantra hath wrought, but for now you can preserve the madness across your pecs.
