Geni

Who it's For: Families, amateur historians, class projects

What We Like: We've been unnervingly interested in the age-old tradition of the family tree as of late. And conveniently, there's Geni, a site that mixes the old-school family tree with the Internet. It's sort of a collaborative work: Register and start building your tree until you can go no further back in the family history. When you reach a dead end, you e-mail other members of your family to fill in the blanks. Maybe you'll finally meet some famous and wealthy relatives! Also good: The privacy policy is airtight, so your tree can only be seen by family members who you invite to the party. As for e-mail, Geni promises that it is "never shared, never spammed." Really, it's just a matter of getting your elder relatives an e-mail account, if they know what that even means.

Snooth

Who it's for: Friendly oenophiles.

What we like: A social network with a very specific focus, Snooth unites people with an interest in wine, from amateurs to experts. Members can review wines, compile lists of their faves, and learn through forums about the finer points of wine drinking. The biggest wine database on the Web, Snooth offers info on vineyards, varietals, and how to score the best wines for your budget, and even generates wine recommendations especially for you. The assessment scale that lets you compare price and user rating is great for weighing your options and experienced drinkers are on hand to guide wine ingénues. The only downside is that the default setting signs you up for e-mail from 3rd party vendors. Uncheck the "Yes, I would like to receive email from relevant Snooth partners" box in "account settings" to avoid inbox bombardment.

Funny or Die

Who It's For: SNL Fans, comedians, anyone bored and not easily offended

What We Like: Another successful celebworking site, Funny or Die is a fun project created by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay where professional and amateur users submit and rate humorous videos. Users determine the fate of the videos: the funny stay and the unfunny die and are sent to the "crypt." Exclusive vids from big name comics are also posted to the site, as are celebrity collabs orchestrated by the Funny or Die team, including the classics "The Landlord" and "Prop 8 - The Musical." As an added bonus, the search features divide videos into "safe for work" and "not safe for work," to help you stay employed. How thoughtful!

DanceJam

Who it's for: Poppers & Lockers, Krumpers, owners of Hammer pants, anyone who dances in front of their mirror.

What we like: What's not to like? This social networking site blew our minds. Usually celebrity social networking endeavors are unnecessary and nerdy, but MC Hammer has really outdone himself with this one! DanceJam lets users create profiles and then upload videos of themselves busting moves. They can enter their videos in DanceJam Dance-offs and give each other feedback. Users also vote for their favorite videos and determine the fate of fellow dancers, including the site's great braino MC Hammer, who was pitted against his own son in a contest. In another cool feature, the videos link to related clips and original dance videos by established artists. Many of the DanceJam's users are really talented and fun to watch and their videos are endearingly homemade and lo-fi: You can often see dancers' bedroom furniture or kitchens in the background while they get down. For a fun and informative time, you can't touch this.

People who think 'Best In Show' is a documentary.

What we like: Since many dog owners treat their pets like people, why shouldn't pooches get their own profiles? On Dogster, owners create pages for their companions, uploading pictures, video, and stories. Then, they can connect with "Pup Pals" and the dog's family members. Other than pretending to be their pets, members can read advice blogs, find local pet resources, and, browse the profiles by breed, site favorites, and, of course, "puppies only." Adoption of orphaned animals is also encouraged and facilitated on the site. If you're not a dog owner, there's also Catster, AnAmigo, which features a bit of variety, and Hamsterster. Or, if you're looking for some pet owner love, there's dating site PetPeopleMeet.

Yelp

Who it's for: People who read reviews, don't trust guidebooks, and have opinions.

What we like: Yelp's conceit is the review -- users write about their local haunts, from bars and boutiques to laundromats and grocery stores. Their assessments then become part of Yelp's arsenal so other browsers can access them and learn about spots to check out or avoid. Members can add friends whose opinions they trust, learn about their faves, and chat with each other. Yelp also features popular events by week and allows users to see who plans to attend them. Like a personalized 'Not For Tourists' guide to everything, Yelp has often steered us to the right places in our home town and beyond. If you have an iPhone, be sure to download the free location-based app that uses the handset's GPS to literally tell you what's cool around you.
Bakers can view the "pantries" -- more or less online recipe boxes -- of other users while swapping tips and faves, browse recipes in a number of categories, and friend other chefs du jour whose recipes they like. It's like a down-home version of Epicurious, where the source isn't Bon Appetit and but Lynette from Chattanooga. Populated mostly by women, this site is recommended for those who want to swap quiche recipes and chat about egg substitutions without getting perved on by lecherous Internet lurkers.

Going!

Who it's for: Urban youth who like to go out and do stuff

What we like: Like Outdoorzy.com, this network encourages you to get off the computer and get outside, only in urban areas rather than the woods. User friendly and easy to navigate, Going has listings for a slew of U.S. cities, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia. The premise is simple: You create a profile involving your basic interests à la Facebook (bday, fave movies, books, whatever) upload photos (or not), and state your intentions (looking for bros, dating, boozing). Then it gets cool. You get to choose your favorite hangouts and access a comprehensive calendar of upcoming social events in your area. You can add events you plan to attend, see who else is going, invite your bffs, and RSVP to select soirees. Once the site gets an idea of your style, it recommends events for you, and you can check on who else is going. It just might help to get some of your friends on it first if you're not that into meeting strangers.

Twitter

Who it's for: People on the run, lovers of brevity

What We Like: Do you wish you could keep up with your friends without them droning on and on in e-mails or IMs? Twitter gives you that ability, as well as bringing you updates from celebrities, your favorite blogs, or any other user you sign up to "follow." Brevity is key, as posts, aka Tweets, are only 140 characters long at most and basically act like Facebook's status updates. You can update via text message and there's no emphasis on posting pictures or personal information, so it feels a little less stalker-friendly. Then there's always the chance you'll hear about a breaking news story, like the guy who Twittered from the plane that crashed into the Hudson. Talk about excitement!

We are so over two things right now. One is the discussion of how much People Magazine paid for the Pitt-Jolie-clan cover shot (more than $14 mil, in case you managed not to hear). The other is the constant analysis of Photoshop intervention in magazine covers. Now a few articles that cover our two least favorite things are making the rounds of the Web. Said articles speculate that MAYBE the babies aren't as cute as they seem on the cover.

Did People's Photoshoppers PASTE ON baby Vivienne's smile? Maybe they did, if the evidence involving a citation from Parenting mag, which alleges that "babies don't smile from external stimulation until 2-4 months," is enough to prove the point. The articles also speculate that maybe the babies were just born weeks ago, which is why they're able to smile, and that Brangelina just didn't tell us. Either way, the celebrity couple is lying, it would seem.

Well maybe the li'l ones were burping. Or maybe the photographers were just really patient. Whatev. In short, we are way more interested in this picture, which makes for a far more interesting debate.

Kellan Lutz, object of adolescent girls' desire and actor in multiple teen moo-vies, is about to get some street cred. The 19-year-old North Dakota native can be seen on the awesome HBO miniseries 'Generation Kill,' the latest project by the creators of our longtime addiction 'The Wire.' Boy's been busy breaking the hearts of middle American youths and shooting the CW's new 90210, but he still found time for a tell-all interview with Switched. Read on, as Kellan reveals the identities of his favorite gadgets, his Wii habits, and his most embarrassing cell-phone debacle.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

I really do love having my toys to occupy my time between scenes. I usually will bring my Playstation PSP to play EA sports games and other adventure games. I'm playing the new 'God of War' which has the right amount of action to get lost in. I also have a video mp3 player which I use to watch 'South Park' episodes, and movies as well as listen to music.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I just recently gave up my favorite phone the Palm Treo for a Samsung Instinct. I love touch screen phones as it gives me the right amount of control over a simple phone. I use my phone for everything from scheduling my life to listening to music, so it's more than just a phone. My new Instinct is cool because it has GPS, a full touch screen, and I can check my email when on set, but I would love to see how it stacks up to the new iPhone 3G. So I might just have to get one of those and pick the better of the two to keep. I really do miss the Treo's keyboard though. I got so good using the keyboard while driving to the point where I could text paragraphs without ever looking down. I loved being able to feel the keys. Also I just found out that the Instinct does not have PDF capability so I cannot read my scripts and sides on my phone anymore but it's worth everything--my "Instinct" is to keep it.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I sent a text to my brother, we talk all day long. I can't wait to see this movie; I hear Heath Ledger could be up for an Oscar for his role as the Joker...I think it's going to be that good!

Continue reading 'Generation Kill' Dreamboat Kellan Lutz Talks Cell Phones

Filed under: Celebrities, MySpace, TV, iPhone

'Generation Kill' Dreamboat Kellan Lutz Talks Cell Phones originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Aug 2008 12:04:00 EST.

Gary Cole's been in a bazillion movies and TV shows and has played all kinda roles. Lately he's busied himself with the much-anticipated stoner comedy 'Pineapple Express', which opens this Wednesday nationwide. Though we remember him best as Katherine's creepy ex on 'Desperate Housewives', we just interviewed him about his gadget-usage and he seems like a really nice guy! He even gave his old drum kit to the kid next door! Cole is unpretentious about gadgetry, reserving his tech-splurges for HDTV and his latest drums. Read on for the deets.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

Just a phone, to take care of business and household-related things, but nothing more "tech-y" than an occasional DVD. I enjoy my quiet time while on set!

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I just got a new LG phone from Verizon. I love this one because it works, unlike my last one (an archaic Nokia), but at the end of the day it's just a phone - I have no romantic attachment to it.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I have never sent a text message before. At least, not on purpose. If I need to speak to someone, I'll call them.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

Teddi and I share an AOL e-mail account, but other than that I'm pretty old-fashioned and read the paper for my news and gossip!

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop?

The standard gripes - losing power, no reception, dropped calls. I literally just got this new phone so I have no complaints...yet.

Continue reading Pineapple Express' Gary Cole Has Simple Tastes, and a Drum Kit

Pineapple Express' Gary Cole Has Simple Tastes, and a Drum Kit originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 04 Aug 2008 12:25:00 EST.
We know Robert Englund mostly as the scary guy that traumatized us throughout early childhood in the legendary Freddy Krueger movies.

Sigh. Remember Patrick Moberg, that Vimeo employee from Brooklyn who saw the "girl of his dreams" (yeah, he really said it) on the subway and waged an online campaign to find her. www.nygirlofmydreams was a sort of grand-scale "missed connections," wherein Pat drew a nice picture of the girl and put out an appeal to his New York neighbors to help him find her.

People love that sort of stuff, it's like 'Desperately Seeking Susan' for the Internet era. And so New Yorkers helped Patrick hurtle along towards a doomed romance, locating the mystery girl within 48 hours.

Dreamgirl was actually one Camille Hayton, a Blackbook intern from Australia. She dated Moberg for two months in the wake of great media fanfare, and then, it was over.

In a recent interview, Hayton told the The Sunday Telegraph about the breakup and about her cameos in 'As the World Turns' and the 'Sex and the City' movie.

"...We dated for a while but now we're just friends," said Hayton, "It's really nice that people embraced the story. It is part of my life now." Moberg, however, refused to comment, telling Reuters via e-mail "We've decided not to do any more press." Hmmm...miscommunication, kiddos? There was this couple in the back totally necking (actually, they'd probably crossed over into heavy petting, though we didn't know what that was at the time).

Not that we all haven't made out in the cinema a time or two ourselves, but puh-leaze! It's the MUPPETS.

Count on the British to put a stop to this sort of behavior -- Odeon, the UK's largest theater chain, has taken to installing security cameras inside movie theaters. So while you're sitting around watching 'The Dark Knight', someone might be watching you! It's so meta.

Odeon execs claim that the cameras are intended to ensure the safety of moviegoers, and have already cut down on "disruptive incidents." But young Brits and human rights groups are sketched out. It's Big-Brotherly, they worry, and takes all the fun out of an old fashioned makeout sesh at the movies.
Ooohhh, it's the Germans! The EU's paragon of efficiency has done another efficient thing -- created a no-nonsense, less-fun version of Facebook.

Entrepreneur Ehssan Dariani, after failing at his male cosmetics line, decided to turn his attention to social networking. And network he did. His site, studiDV launched in 2005, and became the largest social networking site in Europe within a few short months.

Save a few hacking debacles and one incident of mass stalking, studiDV, or 'Fakebook,' as the kleines deutsche have taken to calling it, has been humming along and growing by the minute.

But now Facebook is T.O.'d. Execs claim that Dariani ripped off their steez, and now Facebook is suing Fakebook. Face-off!

Dariani admits drawing inspiration from Facebook in the creation of his site. But until this March, there was no German language version of Facebook. What were the kids to do?

We've noticed that when people take our photos on their camera phones, the results are usually kinda unflattering. Somehow the phones always seem to make us (and our friends) look squirrelly and out of it. Then these unfortunate pictures appear time and time again every time we or said friends call.

In the interest of being service-y, we scoured the Internet for advice on how to improve camera phone photography. Here are some of the best tips from the Digital Photography School.

1. Get A Little Bit Closer Now

Far off shots are one of the biggest faux pas in the camera phone world. Get as close to your subject as you possibly can without getting all up in his or her face, then take the picture. Avoid using the zoom at all costs. Most camera phones are still pretty low-res, so zooming in after the fact to crop your photos will reduce quality even more.

2. Lighting is Everything

Make sure there's enough light. Shooting outside in daylight is ideal. Indoors, try turning a bunch of lights on, but be aware that they might eff up your color balance.

3. Play with White Balance

Many phones have adjustable white balance (a feature that allows you to mess around with color balance in accord with the shooting conditions). Experimenting with white balance can provide your shots with richer hues, improved contrast, etc. More will be revealed in your instruction manual, if you can be bothered to read it.

4. Clean Your Lens, Son!

From spending time in purses, bags, and pockets, camera phones' lenses can get nasty. Sand, lipstick, lint, and fingerprints blight the lens from time to time. DPS suggests cleaning the lens with a sunglass cloth or something similar. We hear Oxypads are good for getting sand out of the phone and lens.

5. Go High-Res

Many phones allow you to change the resolution settings, much like a digital camera. If you can opt for better quality, your shots will be clearer, obvi. They will, however, take up more space on your phone and take longer to send.

6. Don't Perv on Your Neighbors

DPS reminds us that camera phones should be used responsibly. Secret crotch shots are frowned upon. If you're in high school, it's probably a bad idea to take compromising pictures of yourself, or let your boyfriend take them. They could easily end up forwarded to everyone on the phone book. But then, you already knew that... Oh, gross! This story sounds like it came from The Onion, but be afraid: The UK Guardian's Observer newspaper said it, and so it must be true. Turns out a devastating virus, or "Tape Mould" as the Brits are calling it, is ravaging VHS tapes from the '80s and '90s all over the United Kingdom. ('Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'! 'Desperately Seeking Susan'! 'Degrassi Jr. High'! -- all gone!)

More troublesome than the destruction of our fave '80s hits, which are mostly available on DVD anyway, is the mold's desecration of families' precious memories and historical footage. Families with infected tapes may sit down with their popcorn to watch a recording of little Stevie's bar mitzvah or the funny one where Fluffy falls in the bathtub, only to find them unwatchable.

Unusually high humidity has meant that the mold has already scourged thousands of miles of AV tape throughout the UK, not counting tons of tape that are probably rotting in storage. And it's spreading, says the Observer,"at an alarming rate."

If you have the mold, which looks like " a fine white dust," then quarantine the infected tape ASAP. Spores will spread like the bubonic plague, and one moldy tape can ruin your whole archive.

So far, the problem doesn't seem to be too epidemic here in the States, but in case you're worried, you should take a look at this bit of advice from the British Library Sound Archive, which advises that tapes should be kept in the dark, away from heat sources. Moisture is also an enemy of tapes and breeds mold, so keeping tapes in a dry place is advised. By the year 2154, robots will give us haircuts, cell phones will be implanted in our brains and wristwatches will be worn on fingernails. The future is really scary!

Thankfully, we won't be around to witness the phasing out of Hair Jordan and the iPhone, but the idea for the fingernail watch is already on the table. And who is behind it but Timex, the company that manufactured our wristwatches in the '90s. For big T's 150 year anniversary, the watchmaker joined forces with design site Core77 to announce an Orwellian competition entitled 'Timex 2154: The Future of Time."

The competition's runner-up concept watch, the TX54 evolved from press-on nails and contact lenses, like birds from dinosaurs. Humanoids wear it on their thumbnails, and can activate glow-in-the-dark features by touching the nail-tip. It's disposable, and available in an array of colors.

Call us old-fashioned, but we're still not ready to ditch our Casios.

Back when we were kids, we always wanted what the neighbors had. Namely, Yodels, MTV, and a swimming pool. Now, we've outgrown our transfat envy, and don't really know who our neighbors are. But another throwback from our youth, Bill Nye the Science Guy, carries on the tradition of neighborly one-upmanship with his neighbor, actor Ed Begley, Jr.

This beef has nothing to do with who drives a faster car or has a bigger walk-in closet. The Science Guy and Begley are in fact locked in competition over who can make their home and its environs more environmentally sustainable.

The endearingly nerdy competition began almost as soon as Bill Nye moved into the neighborhood two years ago. A cute 83-year-old neighbor recounts "Bill announced it: 'I'm going to best Ed Begley at his own game. I'm going to get him.'"

Nye claims that Begley started it by coveting Nye's new solar panels while filming a segment of Begley's green living show 'Living with Ed.' The sought-after panels include a system which tells Nye when he's making more power than he's using.

Begley's comeback was a series of gnarly rain barrels which he uses to water the plants. Other features of his estate are an Astro Tuft lawn to cut down on water use, an outdoor solar oven, and a picket fence made from recycled plastic milk containers squished into boards. But Begley's still jealous of Nye's copper rain gutters and the solar-powered electric fence around his vegetable garden. Begley keeps snails away from his crops with a tray of beer. They flock to the beer like frat boys to a keg, and then drink themselves to death before touching the vegetables.

Nye admits that Begley's winning the friendly competish, having a 20-year head start and all. He also credits Begley for inspiring some of the changes he's made around his house. But Nye is miles ahead of EB in the aesthetics department. "Ed claims ...that he doesn't care how things look as long as they function well," Nye said. "I'm not in that camp. Things have to look good or don't bother."

We like this dorky eco-competition. So do many other neighbors, who now approach the duo for sustainability tips and info on how to make their own homes greener. We guess sometimes coveting your neighbors goods is really pretty ok.

As we all know, '90s pop superstahh Mariah Carey, she of 'Dream Lover' fame, is back with "a new body, new record, and hot new man," (in that order) says Elle magazine. But her latest dream lover could not, in fact, rescue Mariah from an act of Photoshop butchery by Elle's artistes.

The latest in a series of celebrity cover hack jobs, others of which recently claimed the likenesses of Sarah Jessica Parker and '30 Rock's' Tina Fey, Elle's latest cover shows Mariah back in action and indeed looking pretty fit.

Except what's with her head? As our bros over at Boing Boing point out, MC looks "cobbled together from a dumpsterful of broken gynoids, unscrewing [her] own head."

We don't think MC looks that robotic, (at least not as much as Gwyneth in that Vogue cover) but her neck is stuck out at a disconcerting angle and the photo's head-to-'new body' ratio is definitely not the most flattering. (We think she's screwing her head on, btw).

The popular Web site 4chan was started by a 15-year-old boy in his Long Island bedroom, and continues to be used by 15-year-old boys in their Long Island bedrooms. Boobie pics and skeevy comments are rampant on the site, cuz, well, boys will be boys. And they'll be even pervier cloaked in 4chan's total Internet anonymity (unlike other sites, such as MySpace and Gawker, 4chan does not require that any personal info be divulged in order to post comments, not even a bogus e-mail address).

Site founder Christopher Poole began 4chan as a simple message board for text and images and hoped to use it as a forum for sharing Japanese manga paraphernalia.

But unexpectedly, 4chan is responsible for much more than the viral posting of nudie pictures and anime. The site has been credited with spawning a plurality of Internet memes and many concepts that advertisers are trying to harness for campaigns.

J.I.C. -- 'Meme' is basically 'Net-speak for 'trend,' and describes such sundries as the infamous LOLcats, (cute pictures of cats with weird misspelled captions) and 'Rick Rolling' (where someone sends you a link to an "amazing" video which turns out to be Rick Astley's 1988 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up,") and viral videos.

Experts are impressed with the proliferation of memes from the lo-fi site, which features a simple layout and aesthetic that harkens back to the early days of the Internet. Despite 4chan's notoriety, it remains, in the words of the Wall Street Journal, a "modest operation" compared to other golden-goose startups. Apparently the site's junior-high slumber party atmosphere, while encouraging creativity, has frightened off advertisers, who don't want their adverts posted next to D.I.Y. porn and other potentially controversial content. Ironically, while advertisers are seizing on to the cleaner memes and whatnot borne from 4chan, Christopher Poole still has just one employee, who, he says "makes more money than I do."

Though Poole would not divulge his 4chan earnings, and is definitely no Mark Zuckerberg, we're still sure he makes more money than us.
Nudie-picture posing, French president-marrying singer Carla Bruni has a new album coming this week, and you can preview it on her Web site. Loggers-on have two hours to listen to the 14 tracks of "Comme si de rien n'etait" (if your French is as effed up as ours, that's "As if nothing had happened") for free. However, we couldn't get it to play, and had to stare at a whimsical guitar drawing and fluttering butterflies for 10 minutes before giving up. Ralph.

We hope you have better luck than us, though. Our hopes are not the highest for Bruni's latest endeavor, which is inspired largely by her relationship with French prez Nicolas Sarkozy. "...You need to know, you need to understand, you are my lord, you are my love, you are my orgy," she sings in one song.

We just threw up a little in our mouths after reading that.

But that's not nice. We always liked Carla when she was running around singing schmaltzy Serge Gainsbourg hits. And we like how she's still doing her thing despite all the haters who were into her when she was a model but now shun her for marrying a right-winger. She's donating all album proceeds to charity and forgoing the promotional tour. You can maybe listen to CSRN here, or buy it on July 11th to see how it really is and find out more than you ever wanted to know about Nicky Sarkozy.
The New York City Department of Health is pretty all right. Yesterday it launched a new MySpace campaign, 'NYC Teen MindSpace,' designed to help teens deal, on their own turf. The DOH says that about a third of NYC youth admit to feeling depressed, and 20% say they don't talk to anyone when they feel bad or have a serious problem.

Mindspace, which can be accessed like any other MySpace profile, encourages at-risk teens to seek help for mental health issues, substance abuse, and dating violence. The page features profiles and video clips from fictional characters dealing with damaging relationships, drugs, and the whole shebang. Users can follow the characters' stories, and take online quizzes and polls on themes like their take on prescription drugs, depression, etc.

Young people with problems or questions can send confidential e-mails to counselors and get referrals and advice without even picking up the phone. This seems like a really good idea, actually. In our day, there was just 'Degrassi Junior High,' which was amazing in its own right but had no hotline, just a lot of hilarious hair.

The site also features a playlist and downloadable music to suit the mood. And its pretty good, surprisingly. The Secret Machines? Gang of Four?
Poor horses. We humans have been exploiting them since we first figured out that we could. Yeah, there are laws against it and stuff, but, you know...

Now a new form of horsesploitation has been devised by Rousch Technologies for the Turkish company Kurt Systems. KS' invention is a new and more sinister-looking twist on the horse drawn carriages of yore used to spirit Ugly Betty and Japanese tourists around Central Park.

The scary-looking contraption is not just for fun and TV. It is, in fact, a 4-ton piece of state-of-the-art racehorse training equipment, and comes outfitted with a Volvo diesel engine, silicone simulation saddle, and computerized monitors which track the horse's every move.

The craft has an open space in front where the horse runs and a cabin in the back (Greyhound bus meets funeral hearse) where the vet, trainer, and driver sit, and can monitor horses running up to 38 mph. It even has electronic reins, though we're still not sure how that works.

These creepy horsecrafts could be the future of racing. A Kurt Systems spokesman explains that the trainer will be serially produced, and is expected to become a racing industry must-have. "We believe that our approach to controlled environment training will become established practice with many studs and stables at this level." But how does Big Brown feel about all this? We blogged last week about how Kate Moss lost a hair extension and a philanthropic paparazzo decided to auction it off on eBay. This was all for the kids, of course, claimed the pap. To keep them off drugs.

We waited anxiously all 4th of July weekend to see how the auction would turn out. Last time we checked, the stakes were not so high, peaking at around 40 bucks. But the bids are in, and Moss' locks o' love have sold for a handsome 805 Euros, or $1264!

The auction results naturally beg a more pressing question -- who is the mystery buyer that shelled out more than a G for Moss' not-even-actual hair? An avid supporter of German D.A.R.E.? Or a pervy hair fetishist? A Wordpress blogger claims the eBay winner is some guy from Haiti. His motivations remain unknown. [Source: Yahoo!
Can you fit your whole cell phone in your mouth? [We tried once, with disastrous results] Google Mobile has devised a new YouTube challenge [channel?] in which users post videos on the theme "What can you do with your cell phone?"

Results range from useful (price comparisons, SMS movie times) to macabre (gross gross pick-up schemes) and some of them are fairly entertaining. A few users have gotten creative with this Machiavellian challenge and have even submitted cartoons making fun of Australians (awesome). Others have used the site as a venue to promote their forays into sketch comedy (usually not awesome).

Check out the Mobile Tricks trailer and other potentially fun time-wasters above.

We first learned about Segways, those bizarre two-wheeled electric vehicles, the same way we learned about most things -- from our favorite TV show 'Arrested Development.' Originally we thought Segways were a joke intended to poke fun at Will Arnett's Gob Bluth character, but since then have been convinced of the Segway's veracity. We even saw a Segway tour venue outside the art museum in Philadelphia. Like being a tourist isn't embarrassing enough already!

Apple founding father Steve Jobs shares our sentiment about Segways...or so we thought. When he first saw the Segway, Jobs allegedly said succinctly "I think it sucks." But now, Apple's hired Segway's CTO, Doug Field, to be its new VP of product design!

Could the hiring of the sucky product's "driving [heh] force" be a step towards phasing out the aging Jobs? bloggers are wondering. We don't know, but we sure can't wait to see what kind of freak Mac-Segway babies come out of this marriage.

When other 14-year-olds were playing with D-I-Y hair coloring and making prank phone calls, Zelda Williams was busily working on David Duchovny's movie 'House of D' opposite her Pops Robin. Now babygirl's all grown up, and has just finished working on her second feature, the indy gaystravaganza 'Were the World Mine,' a musical in the tradition of 'Hedwig' that was recently featured in New York's LGBT film festival NewFest. The 18-year-old video game legend/movie actress chatted with Switched about her Xbox addiction, her cool playlist, and how much she hearts her iPhone. Thanks Zelda! We heart YOU!

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set (for down-time?)

In an ideal world I'd bring my Xbox 360, steal someone's Wi-Fi and play Halo 3 or Katamari Damacy all day, but then I'd never get work done. As it is, my laptop and my Bose headphones are usually enough.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I'm an iPhone convert. I'd been previously addicted to the keyboard on the Sidekick 3, but I've since been miraculously cured. Sure, there're a couple things that could be improved upon (I would LOVE a better motion stabilizer in the camera), and I certainly miss touch-texting, but mostly, I heart it. I heart it hardcore.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I texted my friend Tarina about the N.E.R.D. concert I went to yesterday. I'm still mostly deaf, and more than a little sore from dancing.

Where do you go (site or service) pretty much every time you get online?

Notcot.org, Geekologie.com, Wikipedia, NY Times, Dlisted.com. I also like to play Text Twist a lot, and I occasionally guiltily peak in on Perezhilton.com

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop (or any other gadget)?

I gotta say, my Mac does occasionally like to play games with me, such as 'Hide the Dock', or 'Haha, random application quit'. However, I have dropped it a number of times. It could just be exacting its revenge.

Name one thing you wish your cellphone could do that it doesn't do now?

Cook, clean, pimp itself out to pay for it's own bills... However, if I'm being realistic (which I'm obviously not), I'd love a phone that had a laptop's memory capabilities. I have nearly 6,000 songs and I'm the digital equivalent of a pack rat. There's just never enough room for it all.

What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?

I feel like I'm cheating on my iPhone already, but the new HTC touch pro looks might fine, though it's application icon design could use a little spiffing up. Otherwise, the next new game or console. I'm a videogame junkie. What'd you expect from a kid named after one?

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

My laptop. At least I'd have music and movies for a while, and when it runs out of juice, it'd still make a mighty fine weapon.

What's the most-played song or artist on your iPod?

Tough call. I did make a playlist for a friend a couple days back with some of my favorites, current and everlasting:

Cry Me a River - Ella Fitzgerald
Glory Box - Portishead
ThickFreakness - The Black Keys
Set Me Free - The Heavy
Sinnerman (Felix Da Housecat's Heavenly House Mix) - Nina Simone
I against I - Jedi Mind Tricks
Just - Mark Ronson and Phantom Planet
Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing In the Line for the Bathroom) - N.E.R.D.
This is the Thing - Fink
Bum Like You (alt.

Barbecue season is upon us! It's Independence Day weekend and nothing says patriotism like gathering together around a smoking pile of drumsticks and hamburgers.

Robert Fernandez, editor of BBQ blog 'Get Your Grill On,' dishes about technology and barbecue, with tips on how to get the best flavor faster.

Fernandez cautions that many BBQ purists prefer simple contraptions like the traditional charcoal grill, (they just love that smoke flavor) and would not be into the new-fangled advances that may "take all the flavor and excitement out of outdoor cooking."

Now gas grills are king, but, says Fernandez "gas adds no flavor to the food." Despite this unfortunate side effect, gas grills are the biggest cash cow of the barbecue business.

Grilling monolith Weber has been tossing around ideas to help grillers get the best of both worlds -- the instant gratification of the gas grill + the flavor of the charcoal classic.

Weber came up with useful shortcuts such as "chimney starters," cylinders with sawdusty stuff in them that help get the charcoal going, and also a gas ignition system to easily light charcoal.

Another crazy innovation is the searing station, which involves 900-degree blue-flame burners and can cook a steak in a fraction of the usual time. Don't worry, it promises to keep the juices intact.

Rival company Char-Broil has unveiled infrared RED grills, stainless steel and glass contraptions that cook with evenly distributed heat and prevent scary grill "flare ups." They will cost you: $599-$899, at Home Depot. We will stick with the George Foreman thing.

(Not directly grill-related, but fascinating: Char Broil also has a product called the 'Big Easy,' which is an infrared, oil-less turkey fryer! "No oil, no mess, and great fried foods" says Fernandez, a Big Easy fan.) H.O.T.!

Fernandez is also into a few high-tech smokers, though he's really all about cooking over a trash barrel, really! But he's repping his Weber Smokey Mountain ($199 on Amazon), which he calls a "great and efficient smoker." There's another one he likes called "The Big Green Egg" which is ceramic, and expensive, but great! He affirms.

Last thing: temperature is the key to the barbecue. Many people don't know this. Their pork comes out dry and foul. Says National BBQ association prez Howard Miller, "pork is ready to be used at 145 degrees." Remember it.

Remote thermometers can help you impress friends and family with perfectly cooked meats. Fernandez recommends: On the cheap, one from Taylor ($17). Moderate Williams-Sonoma's ($50), and if you are throwing money around the Thermapen from ThermoWorks ($95) is apparently all the rage.

Riding in airplanes is sooo boring. They make you sit down at the worst times, eat gnarly snacks, and watch bad sitcoms for however many hours it takes. Painful.

Virgin America is trying to make things better, though. The airline is on the verge of launching in-flight wireless Internet! Now you can sit around between New York and LA doing what you'd be doing anyway (in this case, reading Gawker and streaming episodes of 'The Hills' until we feel nauseous).

Charles Ogilvie, head of in-flight entertainment and general stand-up guy at VA, gave our bros at Boing Boing t.v. a behind-the-scenes tour of the airline's technological underthangs. (BBtv is featured on the airline's in-flight program, btw. No 'Everybody Loves Raymond' for you!)

You can watch Boing Boing's video tour (see above) of a pretty swanky Virgin plane and cockpit, starring Chuck O. himself and Xeni Jardin from Boing Boing. We admit, the setup does look pretty cool, but Xeni kinda freaks us out.

Whoaaa, a new graphic novel from Zune Arts. Microsoft's digital entertainment brand (it's not just a portable media player, ya know) just came out with 'The Lost Ones,' a collaboration between '30 Days of Night' author Steve Niles and a bunch of artists. Our favorite of the gang is painter Kime Buzzelli, whose awesome watercolors adorn a chapter involving aliens and caves and an Andre-3000-esque hero. Gary Panter, of 'Pee-wee's Playhouse' notoriety, is also involved in the project, as are Brooklyn duo Morning Breath and indoor-sunglasses wearer Dr. Revolt.

The story involves four friends who get into trouble while "planet jumping" and transcending space and time, much like Lily Tomlin in 'I Heart Huckabees.' You can buy one of 42,000 paperback versions of the novel for subway/beach reading at select bookstores or download it free from Zune itself and read it on your computer.
Very, very Orthodox Israelis are all in a tizzy over iPods. Israel's Orthodox Righteous Court of Law, often averse to "chastity-threatening" gadgets, recently put the iPod and its cousin MP4 devices (next-generation portable media players) on trial and found them guilty! of driving the chosen people to unspeakable sins.

The court declared a ban on the offending devices, and is giving merchants three weeks to purge them from store shelves. Those who do not comply may have to stand trial, they say.

iPod is the devil's plaything, say hard-core Orthodox community leaders, who allege that the device weasels its way into good homes by masquerading as a tool for listening to Torah lessons, while in effect serving as an instrument of corruption. Its detractors worry that the faithful will be tempted by "sinful" movies and other media that is readily available on the iPod.

"A great plague is upon us!" proclaim anti-MP4 posters plastered on the walls of Jerusalem neighborhoods.

Sounds like Israeli iPods could use a little makeover, kosher-cell-phone-style.
Hey, remember Season 6 of 'American Idol'? Remember that guy, what's-his-name, the hot one that did beatboxing and almost won but then didn't? Well, he didn't need your deciding votes! Runner-up Blake Lewis is doing just fine, thank you - after being ranked 21st-hottest on AOL's 21 sexiest single men list last July (aw, that's kinda sad actually), he cut an album with Arista records, and Lupe Fiasco was on it!

May 13th marked the release of his latest endeavor, a remix EP for the hit single "How Many Words." Even though he's rolling with big name producers and DJs like BT, DJ Dan, and Britney collaborator Dave Aude, he still found time to tell Switched about his sex, um, we mean, tech life. Read on to find out more, but Blake, you're a winner in our book!

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

Computer, Phone, Camera.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

iPhone. Love it all except for text messaging...

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

The artist and my friend BT - it was about my shoes

Where do you go (site or service) pretty much every time you get online?

MySpace because I run and operate [my profile page] cuz I like talking to my fans.

As we recall, our early school years were not that fun. We got in trouble for asking to go to the bathroom and were made to do timed math problems next to the kid who always got nosebleeds. Sometimes we feigned illness so we could stay home and watch 'Treasure Island' and play 'Ninja Turtles' on Super Nintendo.

Nintendo has come a long way since then. And so has school!? Maybe...

The Japanese have again proven their coolness by incorporating Nintendo DS into the classroom. At least in one Tokyo girls' school, the portable gaming device is now doubling as an educational tool! Seventh-graders at Joshi Gakuen Junior High play with DS as a part of their English curriculum, using a talking software program replete with spelling exercises and language drills.

The program is part of a larger course intended to emphasize English conversation and communications skills, and to break away from traditional techniques of rote memorization and boring grammar exercises. Though some dissidents are not yet convinced of the DS' value as an educator, the girls at Joshi Gakuen are into it. One student claimed the English software was her favorite game, trumping even 'Mario Kart' and 'Animal Crossing'.

YouTubing divorcée Tricia Walsh-Smith never really got famous as an actress, but has become sorta (in)famous for her nutso Internet monologues, in which she sings, dances, and rails against the man who spurned her. Her grievances against Philip Smith, president of the Schubert Organization, involve everything from settlement money and prenups to details of the couple's (lack of) a sex life. Trish claims that Smith wouldn't put out, and that he had a stash of Viagra which he used strictly extramaritally. Ouch.

TWS' series of YouTube divorce vids have gotten tons of attention, and suddenly she's all over Gawker, New York Magazine, etc etc etc, always with a new tale of woe and the same psychotic gleam in her eye. Rumor has it that she is being courted by Bravo for the next season of 'Real Housewives of NYC.'

Do they let divorcées on 'Housewives'? Is that cheating? (We don't watch too much reality t.v., aside from 'The Hills' and 'Shear Genius' so this is baffling.)

At any rate, the grandfatherly, defamed Philip Smith is fighting back, with a lawsuit claiming spousal abuse (based on the YouTube clips) which TWS claims have been viewed almost four million times.

Trish defended herself in a court hearing last week, alleging that her Smith was "trying to leave her penniless" and that the YouTube campaign was her last resort. "I didn't know what else to do because I had no money...I'm not just going to slink off into Central Park," she sassed. The YouTube videos made a court appearance as well. We love the 21st century!

Remember when eBay was all about getting tickets to sold-out Radiohead concerts and Superbowls and stuff? Now you can get lots of gross and unnecessary things on there, like this Kate Moss hair extension, which the supermodel "shed" in Germany while fleeing the paparazzi. The victorious hair-finder, (fashion equivalent of the guy who catches a fly ball in his beer at a Yankees game) is auctioning off the lock for an anti-drug charity, ironically.

The organization is called Keine Macht den Drogen (No Power to Drugs) and sounds like the Weimar equivalent of D.A.R.E. We hope the hair money goes toward the purchase of thousands of KMDD t-shirts and will keep the German youth from one day losing their own hair and teeth.

"I hope Kate doesn't mind. I did not have time to ask her..." says hair-auctioneer John Farr. Of course she won't, John. It's for the kids.
Kanye West Uses Blog to Strike Back

Kanye, Kanye, Kanye. He has a blog, and he uses it to talk back. First there was the EW thing, and now this: a proclamation by the Daft Punk coverer in response to a recent debacle at the jam-bandy Bonnaroo Festival.

Said incident occurred during the annual nouveau-hippie <strike>drug orgy</strike> music mega-fest in Tennessee, where Kanye's performance began two hours late. Apparently the delay in his show was due to technical difficulties, and was NOT KW's fault, but the magic mushrooms were wearing off and the trust fund hippies didn't care. Someone had to pay! So they took their hempen vengeance out on Kanye, pelting the stage with beer cans and other grimy wares and chanting such mantras as "Kanye Sucks!"

In a Tuesday post, Kanye expressed his rage: "This Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I've ever had in my life...this is the maddest I ever will be." He also apologized for not being able to "2 give the performance I wanted to," and assured fans that HE CARES about them.

Don't take it personal Kanye...Everyone knows those Bonnaroo kids have ingrown beards that poke back into their brains and cloud their judgment. We still like you.
