There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

LOLCat of the day. Oh, it never gets tired.

In case your imagination is as weak as your biceps, check out these dumbell add-ons to pump up your Wii-Fit workout (and four other weird WiiMote accessories). [NewLaunches]

Wandering adventurer Christoph Rehage took a year to walk across China, documenting his travels and stunning facial hair growth in our favorite video of the day. [Vimeo]

As if advertising isn't ubiquitous enough, it can now chase you down and force you to touch it. Thanks, Japan. [DesignBoom]

While you were innocently sleeping, Apple was updating the mystery device living in your iPhone. [NetworkWorld]

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

According to the Inquirer, Microsoft accidentally let slip yesterday that it will be changing the name of its mobile operating system, from Windows Mobile to Windows Phone. Although that's not much of a change, Windows Mobile is definitely due for a revamp. [From: The Inquirer]

Nintendo's years-long joyride of improbably good sales had to end someday: today, the company announced significant drops in sales and profits for the last quarter. Don't expect the dour days to last though, with the recent release of 'Wii Sports Resort' and the forthcoming 'Super Mario Brothers Wii,' it won't be long before Nintendo is back in the driver's seat. [From: Venturebeat]

We're not surprised that there's a lawsuit pending in the case of an EMT posting a photo of a murdered woman at a crime scene onto Facebook -- but it boggles the mind that the litigating attorney wants to implicate Facebook enough to "shut it down." [From: Fox News]

A joint experiment between the Russian Institute for Biomedical Problems and the European Space Agency to simulate a trip to Mars packed a group of six volunteers into a mock spacecraft for more than three months. Not surprisingly, the crew had issues with boredom. A similar, 520-day simulation is set to begin next year. [From: New Scientist]

A number of West African nations have been almost completely cut off from the Internet, thanks to an unknown problem with an undersea data line from Europe. Mobile phone service, broadband, and banking have been crippled by nearly 70-percent in the worst-hit areas. [From: BBC]

PriceGrabber.com recently surveyed consumers about how they back up their digital data -- surprisingly, 28-percent said they had never backed up their music. Not so surprising: younger people back up photos to the Web more than twice as often as older generations. [From: PriceGrabber]

Yesterday Kodak showed off the new HD-shooting (1080p) Zi8 camcorder. The pocket cam comes with gyroscopic image stabilization, a line-in jack for hooking up high quality mics, and the usual SD card slot, supporting up to 32GB of storage. The Zi8 features a unique variation on the "USB arm" (standard on these microcamcorders); the USB plug is bendable, making it easier to hook into your computer. [From: Kodak]

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

In case you don't closely follow the politics of intrasolar astronomy, you should know that Pluto's demotion from planetary status may not be permanent. The debate of Pluto's fate has been reignited, thanks to an international snub and one very pissed-off governor.
What happens when your big budget, movie-adaptation of 'Halo' gets dropped by the studios? You give 'em the middle finger with your own indie-alien flick. Wired has the story of the birth of 'District 9' -- we knew those aliens in the trailer looked vaguely like Covenant Elites.
The next generation of computers may be powered by super-intelligent bacteria. Will antivirus software come in a syringe? [From: The Guardian]

AdAge reports that Bing and Yahoo! may soon be joining forces to take on the Google search hegemony. A new deal is in the works that could see a Microsoft takeover of the search number two. [From: Ad Age]

If you're in the UK, you can soon look forward to government officials filling up your Twitter stream -- the British government has published a guide to Tweeting for its ministers, urging them to be "human" and "informal."
The world would be a far less connected place without those ignorant but honorable souls with unsecured wireless networks named "linksys." It never fails that whenever we are stranded at a foreign apartment bereft of Internet access, someone living nearby has left their Wi-Fi on the default setting. E-mail, surfing, messaging? And how.

On some of our more Web adroit days, we'll admit we've been tempted to string together a "192.168.1.1" in our browser, access the modem, and change the name of the wide-open network. Nothing mean-spirited, of course; just a silent 'thank you' for the momentary connection. Imagine coming home from work and clicking that little wireless antenna logo to see your network name has been changed to "linksys_gave_me_20_minutes_of_unadulterated_joy_thanks."
Continue reading If We Chose the Names of Wireless Networks in Our Building...

If We Chose the Names of Wireless Networks in Our Building... originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 25 Jul 2009 17:42:00 EST. Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

Actor Kevin Spacey talks to MTV News about 'The Social Network,' a new film he's producing based on the creation of Facebook. He wouldn't mention who might be cast as college-aged founder Mark Zuckerberg, but if it's Shia Lebeouf, we swear we're quitting movies.
So what if Microsoft's 'Laptop Hunters' ads claim that Apple's computers are too expensive? Market research firm NPD has announced that Apple now has a 91-percent market share in premium computers costing more than $1,000.
Last month, Facebook allowed its users to register vanity URLs for their profiles. In case you regret your choice, Facebook's giving you a do-over, but make it good -- you only get one.
Despite Microsoft executive Kevin Turner bragging about how Apple demanded the company pull its 'Laptop Hunters' ads since Apple had lowered its prices, Microsoft has given in and adjusted one of its spots. The ad in question has been pulled from YouTube and replaced with a reedited version.
Google is inviting 100,000 people to test out its new Google Wave service (which aims to revolutionize Web communication). We're baking them a cake to improve our odds of getting an early look. How are you getting your invite? [From: Mashable]

Billboard is revamping its Web site, partnering with everyone under the sun to combine interactive chart rankings, ticketing, and streaming/downloadable music.
Last we heard, Pirate Bay was ready to be purchased by Global Gaming Factory (GGF). Now GGF is backing off, claiming that the buyout will only happen if it can turn Pirate Bay into a "legitimate business." Sure, good luck with that. [From: SF Gate]

Facebook is releasing promo videos (with behind-the-scenes clips) about how certain features of the social-networking site came to be. Here's one about the birth of Facebook Video -- a service which, incidentally, is seeing more than 1 billion (yes, that's a 'b') video views per month.
E-reader maker Plastic Logic can add AT&T to its list of partners (which already includes Barnes and Noble). Today, AT&T announced it will provide the 3G connectivity for Plastic Logic's upcoming reader device.
Paid Content is reporting that MySpace is set to launch its own Web-mail service. In case you didn't catch his special on 'Comedy Central Presents,' you might know Gary Valentine from TV's 'King of Queens,' or from his slew of appearances on the big screen, including 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' and 'Stuck on You.' Now, the older brother of Kevin James is taking his comedy to the Web with a new series on Crackle called 'Dusty Peacock.' We recently caught up with the actor and comedian to chat about his new show, and to discuss the ups and downs of filming for the Web. Ever the gadget hounds, we also took the opportunity to find out just which devices Gary can't live without on set -- and to hear a little bit about his wishes for an iPhone cuddle app. Check out the video above for our sit down with the New York-born funny man.
Continue reading 'King of Queens' Actor Gary Valentine on Filming for the Web

'King of Queens' Actor Gary Valentine on Filming for the Web originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 12:54:00 EST.
Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

Barnes & Noble is jumping headlong into the e-book market with a new digital store and an e-book reader app for Mac, PC, and iPhone. Word on the street says the favorite haunt of suburbanites may soon be launching a hardware reader, too. Look out, Kindle. [From: TUAW]

In honor of the lunar landing's 40th anniversary, neckerchief purveyor and suitcaserist Louis Vuitton has created a giant space trunk, called the Malle Mars, that promises to transport your wares through the cosmos in style. Although it resembles something from a derelict ship on a tiny, myst-filled planetoid somewhere between Thedus and Earth, this egg contains something much nicer -- namely, luxury goodies like fine china and a sweet folding chair. Fire up the Nostromo, Ripley, and fly us to the beach. [From: DVICE]

If you think all those mix CDs you burned back in 2001 are going to last forever, think again. TechArp recently found that 10-percent of disks seven- to nine-years-old fail. Could be bad news for your Dashboard Confessional/TLC mix.
Link-sharing site Digg made waves in April when it launched its controversial DiggBar service. The DiggBar is making headlines again, thanks to a change that redirects all linked URLs back to the Digg homepage before sending clickers to the original linked article. To put things lightly, people are pissed -- and it looks like Digg founder Kevin Rose is none too happy with the change, either.
Kid-journal Pediatrics recently released a report claiming that kids can get as much exercise playing video games like 'Dance Dance Revolution' and 'Wii Sports' as they can from moderate to intense walking. For being one of the wealthiest and most-powerful companies of all time, Google sure likes to play things with a lighthearted touch. Make no mistake about it, Google lords over Internet search today every bit as menacingly as Microsoft did with operating systems in the '90s, but instead of monopolizing an industry with a frown and a furrowed brow, Google is all high-fives and nerdy smiles.

If Microsoft were a famous actor, it would be Christian Bale on a bad day -- you don't really mind that he's invading all of our popular movie franchises, but you're not going to want to hang out with him... plus he kind of scares you. Google is more like Seth Rogen -- he's in every single movie ever released, but you don't care because he's completely non-threatening and he'd probably offer to share his lunch with you.

Continue reading Nintendo 'Zelda' Emblem Secretly Hidden in Google Logos

Filed under: Video Games, Google, Web

Nintendo 'Zelda' Emblem Secretly Hidden in Google Logos originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 15:30:00 EST. History is filled with some great weapons, but generals like to say that wars are won with soldiers, not swords. What do they know? We like to keep abreast of our collective militant pasts, and can certainly think of a couple of devices of war that changed the course of world history. In honor of summer revolutionary holidays (and because we were too busy blowing ourselves up on July 4th), we're honoring France's Bastille Day on July 14 with five revolutionary weapon technologies that changed the game -- and changed the world. Vive la révolution!

Sony Announces VAIO W Netbook
After not too long ago writing off netbooks as a "race to the bottom," Sony is calling the kettle black and introducing the VAIO W -- the first device the manufacturer is calling an Internet Notebook (i.e. netbook). Here's hoping this new ultra-portable (10-inch screen, 1.6-gigahertz Atom processor) has the build quality of the smaller VAIO P, but not the high price tag.

Sega Toys' New Electro-Kitty
Sega Toys has a new digital kitten -- called the Dream Cat Venus -- that uses forehead and body-touch sensors to provide you with the most accurate feline simulation achievable by science. Oh, and it does voice-recognition and purrs when it hears words that it likes.

Sprint/Best Buy's $0.99 Netbook (Strings Attached)
We knew it was coming, eventually. Best Buy and Sprint are now offering a subsidized netbook for $0.99. It's not all roses and sugar crumbs, of course; the Compaq-branded HP Mini 110c comes tethered to a two-year data contract that'll end up costing you $1,440 in the long run.

Trace of Time Dry-Erase Clock
Korean product designer Il-Gu Cha's Trace of Time dry-erase clock lets you add your own deadlines to its face. As those deadlines come and go, the clock wipes them away with its eraser minute hand. Watch the video here, and be sad you don't own one.

New Design For 'Guitar Hero 5' Drum Set?
According to a mysterious source, the 'Guitar Hero' drum-set peripheral may be getting a redesign for the release of 'Guitar Hero 5.' Judging by the blurred image of the supposedly new hardware, this kit looks a lot more like the 'Rock Band' drum set with its smaller body, rounded cymbals, and control buttons moved closer to the player.

The Daily Engadget: Sony VAIO W Netbook, Electro-Kitty originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 10:18:00 EST. Our friends over at Engadget obsessively cover everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics, which is why we compile this daily roundup of their top stuff. For more details on any of these stories, click on the Engadget links in each story below.

McDonald's Getting ChargePoint Station for Electric Vehicles
A new McDonald's restaurant in Cary, North Carolina will open next Tuesday -- equipped with NovaCharge ChargePoint electric vehicle charging stations. Restaurant-goers can help the world by saving gas, while helping to curb overpopulation by scarfing down artery-clogging Big Macs. We can see Mother Earth smiling.

iPods Getting Cameras?
Expect the next-gen iPod to render useless yet another gadget taking up your pocket space; the evidence is piling up that your next iPod will sport a camera. Recently, iPod Nano cases with camera holes have been popping up on the 'tubes, and TechCrunch is reporting that Apple recently ordered a large number of cameras like the ones used in the iPhone 3GS.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: McDonald's 'McCharge,' iPods to Get Cameras?

The Daily Engadget: McDonald's 'McCharge,' iPods to Get Cameras? originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 11:03:00 EST. Maine Students Get MacBooks
CNet reports that the state of Maine is continuing its plan to provide laptops to kids by purchasing MacBooks for all public school students in the seventh through 12th grades. Talk about lucky; it's got to be easier learning to type on those sleek MacBooks than on the ancient IBMs we had. Flickr users are now able to share their images on the popular microblogging site with an in-browser tool or with a mobile phone using a new, "2twitter" e-mail address.
Clear Selling-Off Sensitive Data
You've probably seen those short lines at airport security terminals for Clear pass holders. On June 22nd, the company (which had promised to whisk traveler-members through airports for a fee) suddenly went belly-up, gleefully taking those $199 subscription payments until the 11th hour. Well, the shadiness keeps on coming. The company is trying to sell off sensitive customer data to get back all that money it spent on nice uniforms for its check-in staff (and on hiring defense contractor Lockheed Martin to integrate its service into airports). To qualify for membership, travelers had to submit detailed personal info (iris scans, Social Security numbers, and everything in between). Clear told members via e-mail that it values its members so much that it's selling them out to another travel membership company, violating its own privacy agreement in the process. Yeah, this will work out well. [From: Wired]

The Pirate Bay Goes Legit
The Pirate Bay has been bought out by European Internet café company Global Gaming Factory and will be adopting a pay model in the near future. When faced with the legal wrath of the entertainment industry, the popular torrent-sharing site once adopted a devil-may-care attitude and brushed off lawsuits like they were nothing. Not anymore -- it seems that the pirates are selling out. No word on what the pay model will be, but this reeks of Napster 2.0.
Shaq's Twitter Hoops Challenge Answered
Newly minted Cleveland Cavalier center Shaquille O'Neal recently issued an open call to his Twitter followers to track down Bruce Manley -- a YouTube basketball phenom -- so the big man can challenge Manley in a $1,000 game of H-O-R-S-E. According to The Hoop Doctors, Manley saw Shaq's tweet and has excepted his challenge. The game will go down sometime in July. The site is rolling out a YouTube-like video-streaming site with no restrictions on copyrighted material. Dubbed 'The Video Bay,' the test version of the new site has already been opened to some users, although there's no set date for a launch of the finished, public version. It seems that Pirate Bay likes to live in hot water; the four founders of the site were recently sentenced to jail time for copyright violations, and this new venture proves they're not backing down. Jimmy Fallon Bests Tiger Woods
We never thought it was possible, but Jimmy Fallon has emerged victorious from his round of virtual golf with megachampion Tiger Woods. The match took place in New York City's Times Square, and the witty talk-show host bested the champion golfer at his own game (the Wii version of 'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10'). New York isn't treating Tiger too well: Just last week, he failed to defend his U.S. Open title at Bethpage Black out on Long Island. Now, a Swedish appellate court has denied a retrial, despite Pirate Bay's claim that the judge in the case was biased since he belongs to a number of Swedish copyright groups.
Shaq Traded, Notified on Twitter
The Twitterverse is weird. NBA star Shaquille O'Neal was traded to the Cleveland Caveliers last night, but he didn't find out from his agent or from the Cavs' management. Nope, Shaq allegedly first heard about his new home in Cleveland via a tweet from a fan who somehow got the news before the big man. Check out TechCrunch for the full details on this bizarre story. Who will prevail, the guy with his name on the show or the guy with his name on the game? It's Jimmy Fallon versus Tiger Woods in 'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10' tonight; we're picking Tiger to win by a couple hundred shots. When 24-year-old Graham Hunt of Essex, England first played 'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008' on the Nintendo Wii, he got hooked on golf. After mastering the game in his living room, Hunt decided that he wanted to take his Wii-mote skills to the real golf course. There was just one problem. Since a neurological disorder struck him three years ago, he's been paralyzed from the waist down.

After a few failed practice swings from his wheelchair, Hunt took to the Web and discovered the Paragolfer. This $16,300, German-built machine tilts forward to allow its rider to make normal golf swings. And it's all-terrain -- which means no free drops from sand traps. Mr. Hunt bought one, and hit the links.
Continue reading Mecha Golf Machine Hits the Links, Helps Disabled

Mecha Golf Machine Hits the Links, Helps Disabled originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:41:00 EST.
Rapidshare Loses File Sharing Suit, Fined $34 Million
First it was Pirate Bay, now it's Rapidshare. Mashable is reporting that a German court has ordered the file-hosting site to pay $34 million to German performance rights group Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte (GEMA). Like the Pirate Bay case, the judgment is dubious since Rapidshare merely hosts files; it doesn't discriminate the types of files it hosts or what users are doing with them. If you follow the German court's logic (which claims that Rapidshare makes illegal file-sharing easy), then copyright owners should be suing Google for making content available through its Web search engine. Expect to see this judgment, and Pirate Bay's, appealed in the European courts. [From: Mashable]

ExxonMobil's Electric Car Unveiling Next Week
We know it sounds strange, but oil giant ExxonMobil will be unveiling its first electric car, the Maya 300, next week. Developed and built by Electrovaya, the $25,000 Maya 300 charges from a standard wall outlet and gets up to 60 miles with each 8- to 10-hour charge. The car is part of a vehicle-sharing program called AltCar, which will allow consumers to rent the car by the hour. If you find yourself in Maryland in the next few months, swing by the Maryland Science Center, plunk down a couple bucks, and cruise around Baltimore in the most ironic vehicle ever built.
Early this month, a huge group of dancers wearing Hammer Pants stormed a trendy store in Los Angeles and grooved their way to viral video stardom. In one flashmob, MC Hammer was back -- in a big way (although in our eyes, he never left). The '90s rapper and dancer now has his own TV show ('Hammertime,' Sundays at 10 PM EST on A&E) and is well on the way to Internet mogul-status, thanks to his dance video site Dancejam.com. We were fortunate enough to have a little Hammertime of our own recently when the MC stopped by our studio to talk a little tech.

A true gadget lover, Hammer somehow managed to sneak a second iPhone into the interview (despite the best efforts of our hardcore sound guy to confiscate all interference-causing cell phones before hitting the 'record button'). Check out the video above, where the man himself riffs about Twitter, his absolutely favorite gadget, and the democratic power of the realtime Web as witnessed by the unrest in Iran -- that's right, Hammer's deep like that.
Continue reading MC Hammer Talks iPhones, Twitter, and Web-Induced Unrest in Iran

MC Hammer Talks iPhones, Twitter, and Web-Induced Unrest in Iran originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 12:22:00 EST.
Apple's Steve Jobs Now Working Through E-mail
Apple's head honcho Steve Jobs has been on medical leave since January. Fortunately, the Cupertino-based company did not nosedive into the ground without its master's glorious leadership. Still, the news that Jobs is now back working at Apple, albeit via e-mail, is a welcome tonic for Apple fans and devotees. We're hoping it's also good news for that long-rumored Apple tablet; maybe with Jobs back, it will finally see the light of day. [From: USA Today]

Video Game Industry Projected to Hit $90 Billion
Apparently, the video game industry is the 21st-century version of oil. You might be inclined to believe us after checking out the latest report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., which predicts that the video game software industry (just the games, not consoles and accessories) will reach more than $90 billion in the next six years. For a little comparison, consider this. In 2007, the video game industry took in a little less than $10 billion. It makes us space geeks bummed when NASA has to cancel shuttle launches, especially at $450,000,000 a pop, but caution is a good thing when you're wrangling 7-million pounds of thrust in order to blast seven people -- and several billions of dollars worth of engineering -- hundreds of miles into the sky. Technicians canceled last week's second attempted launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavor after detecting a hydrogen leak near the external fuel tank. In this case, the malfunction was detected hours before launch, but it got us thinking about aborted shuttle launches. What would've happened if the leak was detected seconds before, instead of hours?

As it turns out, there have actually been four significant (and spine-chilling) aborts throughout NASA's space shuttle history. Three of them occurred with the countdown timer at less than T-minus ten seconds, and one occurred nearly 400 seconds after a launch. Strap in, because we've got video of all of them.
Continue reading Four Nerve-Racking Space Shuttle Launch Aborts

Four Nerve-Racking Space Shuttle Launch Aborts originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 13:35:00 EST.
Iranian Cyber Army Powered by Twitter
The New York Times reports that Twitter is being used by Iranian protesters to perpetrate Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks on Iranian government and political Web sites. Twitter has been instrumental in Iran's escalating revolt over election results, but this new tactic is decidedly aggressive, enlisting users to participate in a sort of cyber-war against the incumbent government. The idea of a worldwide, civilian cyber-army, controlled only by its level of indignation, is startling and more than a bit scary. [From: NY Times]

iPhone Sales Surprisingly High
Apple sold more than one million units of its new iPhone 3G S over the weekend, according to a company press release. The announcement comes after Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated a much more conservative 750,000 units. This is a new iPhone we're talking about here; we all know the thing's prone to fly off the shelves, no matter what stats and predictions say. World's First Sonic Laser Created, Goes to '11'
It's been quite a week for the field of acoustics. We've already seen a sonic black hole, and according to CNET, researchers in England and the Ukraine have built the world's first "saser." Yep, a laser made out of sound. Where normal lasers emit photons, the team's saser uses high-frequency sound waves. How high? The waves have a wavelength of only a few nanometers, and a frequency in the tetrahertz range. (That's high-pitched enough to make Minnie Riperton sound like Barry White.) We wonder what would happen if you blasted a sonic black hole with a saser. A sonic Big Bang, perhaps?
Amazon CEO Explains Why Kindle Is So Pricey
Jeff Bezos recently appeared onstage at Wired's Disruptive by Design conference, and writer Steven Levy asked the Amazon CEO about why exactly the Kindle is so expensive. Jeff's answer: the Amazon crew didn't want to follow a cell-phone pricing model. Sure, the Kindle DX could cost $100, but then Amazon would have to charge monthly subscription fees upwards of $50, and that just didn't sit too well with the chief. 'Weird Al' Yankovic Hits Us With 'Craigslist'
What's the best way to follow up the overwhelming amount of press Craigslist received from the whole murder/prostitution scandal? How about a new 'Weird Al' Yankovic video? Okay, fine; Al is claiming he wrote his Doors-inspired ode to the online classifieds site before the Craigslist killer story broke, so we can't call him out for trying to capitalize on all the negative press. Still, there's no excuse for those leather pants, no matter how hilariously perfect the song is. More importantly, this means that the service outage will hit Iran in the middle of the night, when Twitter usage is often at its lowest.
Tales From the Great Facebook Land Grab of '09
Come here, young whippersnappers, and set a spell. Let us tell you of a time when the powers that ruled one of the largest tracts of Internet land up and gave away millions of free Web domains -- domains that would go on to be some of the most valuable in the world. Yessir, we're talking about the Great Facebook Land Grab of 2009. Some frontiersman types took the opportunity to grab high-profile user names that didn't rightfully belong to them. The aftermath -- what with the Facebook law returning those purloined URLs to the good townsfolk -- is as entertaining as watching a blind cat climb a pigeon pole. Yeehaw! [From: Buzzfeed]

The Web Welcomes Hunch: Another New (And Fun) Search Engine
We're officially coining Spring 2009 the Spring of the Search Engine. Microsoft recently launched its Bing search site, and a handful of newcomers are launching more novel (and welcome) approaches. First was Wolfram|Alpha, with its advanced-mathematics-inspired "answer engine," and now we have Hunch. The brainchild of Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, Hunch asks you 42 questions in order to determine what you might like on the Internet. If you're still intrigued, you can create a profile that will allow the site to get smarter each time you use it. Give it a try yourself at hunch.com.
Kaguya Probe Crashes Into the Moon
Japan's Kaguya lunar probe (pictured) gave astronomers one last show as it took its final bow yesterday, slamming into the moon's surface at 4,000 mph and exploding in a fireball that could be seen from Earth. The scheduled (and spectacular) impact was a fitting end for Kaguya, which provided the first up-close videos of the moon in stunning HD, and posted them on YouTube, no less. [From: Scientific American]

'Internet Explorer' Forced From Euro-Release of Windows 7
Thanks to European anti-trust rulings, Microsoft's newest operating system Windows 7 will not include 'Internet Explorer' when released across the pond. Independent and third-party browser makers have been fighting this battle for over a decade, so consider this a win for the little guy (and Firefox). We're glad to see that Europe is keeping things competitive, but does this mean that Apple's upcoming Snow Leopard release of OS X will be missing the Safari browser?
Controversial French File-Sharing Law Struck Down!
In a huge win for online rights, the controversial "three strikes" file-sharing law in France has been struck down by the country's constitutional council. The law had proposed that illegal file sharers be kicked off the Internet after three convictions of online piracy, but the high court deemed "free access" (meaning unrestricted access) to the Internet is a human right. Expect Web rights activists the world over to take up this judgment as a victory cry. It's a new dawn for the Internet. Seriously. [From: The Guardian]

NASA Teaming Up With Europe for Mission to Mars?
We were happy to hear from FOX News that NASA may be reaching out to Europe for a joint mission to Mars. This is exactly the kind of cooperation that results in a worldwide Space Federation that will enable interstellar explorers to band together under one common flag and boldly go places. Of course, neither the U.S. nor Europe has the money to pay for the planned mission, but we're not letting a minor setback like that rain on our parade.

It may surprise you that beneath our gentle, gadget-loving exterior, there lies a closeted obsession with speed. Sure, we tend to talk about Twitter and have been known to spend hours debating the best instant-messaging client -- or the best sci-fi villain (it's so obviously IG-88) -- but we turn our heads just like the next person when a Ferrari F430 rolls by.

In honor of our innate love of all things fast, we've gathered up a list of the fastest things on (or nearly on) Earth. You'll find no cheetahs or peregrine falcons here, just the most crazy-quick contraptions humans have ever strapped themselves into. With that, let's punch it....
Continue reading World's Fastest Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (and Other Stuff)

Filed under: Car Tech, Editor's Picks

World's Fastest Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (and Other Stuff) originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 13:02:00 EST.
'The Sims 3' Is EA's Best-Ever Release
Game developer Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that the recent release of 'The Sims 3' (pictured above) is the company's most successful release ever. In the game's first week, EA sold more than 1.4 million copies. What's more, the iPhone version of the game jumped to the top of Apple's app store in less than two days.
We recently had a chance to take our cameras and check out the new Brammo Enertia electric motorcycle, only the second one to hit the market and sure to please most Earth-loving urban hipsters. Our man Tim Stevens took the high-tech wunderbike to the streets of lower Manhattan for a little envy-inducing, 13.7-horsepower jaunt to your local Starbucks. For $11,995, you can terrorize your burg at a latté-foaming 50mph and look infinitely more hardcore than those tricks on a Vespa. It's the perfect complement to your faux-leather, vegan Heck's Angels jacket.

The bike is can be pre-ordered at the Enertia site (and will be available in early July at West Coast Best Buy stores, too). Check out Engadget for Tim's full review.
Filed under: Car Tech, Switched Video, Reviews, Father's Day

Hands On Review: Brammo Enertia Electric Motorcycle (Video) originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 13:27:00 EST.
YouTube Streams More Than a BIllion Videos a Day
There's no question that YouTube is the streaming-video king, but various tracking companies have pegged the actual number of streams per month anywhere between five and seven billion. Now, TechCrunch's rumorist extraordinaire Michael Arrington is saying that he's been told -- straight from Google -- that YouTube streams more than one billion videos per day. Incredible, considering that ComScore estimates that the population of the Internet is about 1.5-billion people. Boy, do we ever love that Keyboard Cat. [From: TechCrunch]

Huge Hack Wipes Out 100K Web Sites
A U.K.-based Web hosting company was recently the victim of a massive hacking attack that erased the data of around 100,000 sites. This large-scale exploit is thought to have used an SQL injection to gain access to the servers, and then it eliminated the data. Sad thing is, the owners of these sites will never be able to regain their information. As of yet, there's no info as to who the attackers might be.
